For the Cambodian community dolphins are a frequent sight and since recently become a tourist attraction as well. Uluwatu is located on the rugged limestone Bukit Peninsula at the southern end of Bali. It is well known for its cliff top temple where macaques have the run of the place and for some of Bali’s most beautiful beaches famous for their white sand, azure clear warm seas and for awesome surfing.

Uluwatu beach is a top notch surfing destination famous for its excellent waves. Located at the bottom of a cliff this surfing spot is reached by climbing down steps built into a ravine. The beach is really a small sandy area with a cave and surfers have to paddle out to catch the waves. At high tide the sandy area is indiscernible from the rest of the sea. The surf is generally between 1 meter and 4 meters high but is known to go higher according to the weather. Four different types of waves attract surfers to the site. Temples a wave that manifests itself during high to mid tides, the Peak that comes up all the way to the cave during high tide, Racetrack a really hollow and fast barrel that manifests during low tide are some of the waves well known among the surfing community. However a wave known as Outside Corner is the most popular of all. This long fast wave only manifests itself when the sea churns out 8 meter high waves.

Padang Padang Beach north of Uluwatu’s famous temple is known for its long rolling surf and is a popular destination with swimmers, sunbathers and other beach enthusiasts. Approximately 100 meters long at low tide, the white sandy beach approached though a cave and a series of steps down the cliff slopes gently into clear, warm turquoise waters capturing the imagination of many visitors who find it delightful. A part of it is shaded by trees on the cliff and a part is an overhang gouged out by wave action. Although the sea is calm here for most of the year being protected by a reef, at low tide one can only enjoy the beach but not the sea due to the coral protruding from it. Several beach huts or ‘warungs’ are found on the edge of the beach. Visitors can catch beautiful sunsets from the beach itself or from the top of the cliffs, in little local cafes. The beach was made famous by the 2010 Hollywood movie Eat, Pray Love.

Suluban Beach on the other hand provides a secluded beach experience. Although it is connected to Uluwatu beach it is not overrun by the surfing crowd. This beach is also reached by coming down steps along a steep slope. It is accessible even when the tide is up and when the tide recedes it exposes large tracts of sea weed and rocks which is interesting to explore but is not suited to swimming.

Other beaches of note in close proximity to Uluwatu which visitors rave about are Balangan in Pecatu, a 200 meter sandy stretch known for its high rollers and Nyang Nyang known to produce 50 to 150 meter rides during all tides and Dreamland also a pristine stretch of sand popular with surfers and other beach users.
