Now that the wedding ceremony of Shoaib Malik and Sania Mirza is over there are lessons to learn for the nation, including our media which has covered every moment, glimpse and sentiment. In order to give a different flavour to the audience TV channels did not refrain from showing their bed, cushions, bathroom and even bed-sheets!
It was embarrassing when Shoaib, in an interview to Express News criticised the media for interfering in his personal life to an extent that “he became the bodyguard of his wife” and added that the media “has made money out of his wedding” which is a “personal event”. Regardless of whether the couple is compatible or not, there is definite incompatibility between Sania Mirza’s perception of Pakistan and the perception of the press about the marriage.
Although her body language was harsh towards the people and the press, our media gave her unprecedented coverage. The media called her the ‘daughter-in-law of Pakistan’ as a goodwill gesture, which she seemed to have completely rejected. We have yet to see a glimpse of joy on her face. She looks disturbed, confused and annoyed. Maybe she is afraid of extremist Hindu elements in India who consider this nation to be too soft on terrorists. After all, it is a common perception in India that Pakistanis and its establishment support atrocities like the Mumbai attacks and give refuge to alleged terrorists like Hafiz Saeed.
Mirza’s visit to Pakistan seems to be a visit to an unfriendly state rather than to her friendly in-laws. Both the bride and groom failed to acknowledge the passion of the Pakistanis who welcomed them with open arms. Mirza expressed her displeasure at the way people welcomed her and the way they interfered with their private life. The only thing she praised was the food. This is a huge loss for Pakistan. We have lost a national hero. Shoaib Malik will be moving to Dubai. Dubai does have a higher standard of living and, unlike Pakistan, does not have any alleged involvement of sponsoring terrorism.
But is he going to remain a national hero if he lives outside the nation? People by and large are saying that the marriage is a milestone for South Asia’s peace in that it will enhance confidence between the two countries. Had peace been achieved through unpredictable relations like marriages, the region would have been stabilised ages ago, after the marriage of cricketer Mohsin Khan and actress Reena Roy. A serious approach of the Pakistani media is required to analyse something as sensitive as regional peace and national pride. The media needs to fix their professional limitations to defend the integrity of the national press.
As suggested by the couple, we should not interfere by throwing emotional welcomes. We should stop calling Sania Mirza the ‘daughter in-law of Pakistan. Pakistan’s honour is above marriages of all kinds — be they inter-state or inter-celebrity.

The news of Sania's marriage with the former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik made the media speculate if it would open a new chapter in Indo-Pak ties. However, Sania said that her marriage has nothing to do with Indo-Pak politics. She added that she is happy as it's dream of every girl to find a suitable groom.

Later she broke her engagement with childhood friend Sohrab Mirza. Shoaib was also linked to Bollywood actress Sayali Bhagat and was even accused of marrying another Hyderabad girl Ayesha Siddiqui in 2002 over phone, though he claimed that he was merely engaged to her.

Sania and Shoaib announced earlier that the nikaah would take place on April 15 but they tied the knot yesterday (April 12) at a private ceremony attended by their close relatives and friends, taking everyone, including the journalists, unawares. The guests at the wedding offered zuhar namaz after the nikaah.

The Mehndi ceremony is taking place today followed by Sangeet tomorrow (April 14). The wedding reception will be held on April 15 in Hyderabad.

The wedding was supposed to take place on April 9 but it was postponed by 3 days after the Qazi refused to perform the nikaah without Shoaib’s passport, which was seized by the police following an FIR filed by his first wife Ayesha Siddiqui. Earlier, media reports said that the 'walima' hosted by the Pakistani cricketer to celebrate his marriage with the Indian tennis stars was marred by unruly guests who wanted to take photos with the newly weds.

However, the latest reports say that it was not unruly guests but Gilani Jr who was the reason behind the ruckus in the function in Lahore that forced to the cross-border couple to leave the function earlier than the scheduled to time.

Geo News reported that the chaos started when the PM's son punched an unknown person who was trying to approach him for a photo op.

The news channel has a video clip, which shows Gilani’s son pushing the unidentified man leading to further commotion at the party.

Malik hosted the 'walima', which is the party held by the groom after the wedding, on Apr 27 in in Lahore's Pearl Continental Hotel.

Several high-profile guests such as Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, federal Population Welfare Minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan and federal sports minister Aijaz Jakhrani as well as cricketers Wasim Bari and Aamir Sohail attended the party.

It was not only the Lahore function that was disrupted. The reception in Malik's home town Sialkot was also marred by similar scenes as scores of uninvited guests and security management upset the couple.

Sania Mirza’s wedding to Shoaib Mallik was the biggest story on every news channel just about a month ago. While few people think of tying the knot at 23, Mirza surprised the whole country with her decision. “I never really thought about it. I used to say that I would get married early, at around 24 or 25. I’m close to that age right now. I’ve always wanted to marry early, because I want to have children at a young age. I never thought about the age or month. It just happened,” she says proudly.
Currently, the tennis ace and her hubby have been living in her Hyderabad home. Marriage doesn’t seem to have changed her life, but living with her husband has brought them even closer. “Life’s the same as it was before. Nothing has changed, except that we are living together. We don’t feel like we are married, though we’re really happy that we live together,” she adds.
So far, very little was known or written about the couple. They’ve known each other for the past six years. In fact, newspapers would often link her to stars from Telugu actor Navdeep Pallapolu to Shahid Kapur. Mirza reveals, “I first met Shoaib a long time ago, maybe 2004 or 2005, but I’m not even sure. Someone introduced us. We happened to meet again at Mohali after a long time. Finally, we started talking when we met in Hobart, Australia earlier this year. After that, we kept chatting regularly.”
How did the topic of marriage come up after months of chatting on the phone?
We ask Sania who popped the question and she responded: “Who do you think? Honestly, no one proposed to anyone. We just started talking about marriage. It wasn’t like he went down on his knees or anything. We just went with our instincts and it felt right at that point,” she confides.

Do you plan to become a Pakistani citizen?Not at all, I’m an Indian and will always keep my Indian citizenship. I have already said that quite a few times.

What has that got to do with our wedding though? It’s completely besides the point.

How does it feel to be the first celebrity Indo-Pakistan couple?
Being an Indo-Pakistan couple is great, but that’s not what you think of when you are getting married. It doesn’t matter at all. We wanted to get married and be together as two human beings would. We didn’t consider which country he was from, or which country I was from.

What was the reason behind selecting a country like Dubai as your residence post-marriage?Well, it’s easy. Shoaib used to spend a lot of time in Dubai. A lot of their home series have been played there over the last year. It’s also very close to both India and Pakistan in terms of distance and is a convenient place to stay.
There was a lot of political hostility in India after your marriage became public.
Did you ever have second thoughts?We never had any second thoughts about marrying each other. Like I mentioned before, we are two individuals getting married, not two countries. It didn’t matter if he was from Pakistan or Timbuktu. I was marrying someone who I wanted to be with.

Do you think the rightwing backlash in India against your wedding was only because of your religion?
Honestly, I don’t know.
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has said that it won’t allow you to play here?
They also took it back. Obviously, the media didn’t highlight that. I’m from this country and I will keep playing for it.
Your Lahore reception was in the news. What went wrong?
Nothing went wrong. As usual, it was blown out of proportion by the media. In Lahore, the deadline was 10 pm and we left by 9.40 pm. Yes, it was a celebrity wedding and people were excited about it. So everybody started coming on stage. But we left because the security advised us to leave the place about 10-15 minutes early. No one was angry and no one had an argument as everyone is claiming.

Have you and Shoaib watched an India-Pakistan match together?
No, because India and Pakistan haven’t played together since 2007.

Do you watch Bollywood films?
Yes, we do watch a lot of Bollywood films.

Have you been offered roles in Bollywood films so far?
Yes, I have been offered many roles. And I’m not interested. That’s not something I want to do.

Do you have friends in the industry?Yes, I have a lot of friends in Bollywood. I meet them often because we have a common friend circle.
When Reena Roy quit Bollywood at the height of her fame in 1983 to marry Pakistan cricketer Mohsin Khan, no one said anything about it. Why do you think your marriage was targeted?I don’t know. As journalists, you guys should tell me why you made such a big deal out of it. If you didn’t do that in 1983, you shouldn’t have now.

Will you play in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi later in the year?
But you still haven’t answered my question.I can’t answer for everyone. Okay, yes, I will play the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. I have said that time and again. I have already started practicing. My wrist feels good and hopefully, by the end of the year, we can try and win some medals for the country. I’m also looking forward to the Olympics in 2012.

What’s cooking between Wasim Akram and Sushmita Sen?

There has been speculation about Pakistan cricket legend Wasim Akram and actress Sushmita Sen ever since they hosted a reality show together on television around two years ago.

At that time Akram’s marriage to Huma was going strong. But after her untimely demise in October last year, the rumours of a romance between them kept getting stronger, especially in the last couple of months.
On Monday night, Wasim and Sushmita arrived together at a suburban nightspot and spent the evening in each other’s company, the first time they’ve made a public statement about their togetherness. Judging by the PDA (public display of affection) they indulged in, the relationship seems official now.
An eye witness said, “Akram and Sushmita walked in hand in hand at around 11.30 on Monday night. They booked the bed-by-the-sea table and were seen relaxing. They seemed very comfortable in each other’s company. Later, a couple of Sushmita’s female friends also joined them. While Akram was acting coy, Sushmita seemed to be in pretty a playful mood and was loud enough to let the world know that she’s very happy with the new man in her life. Both of them stayed together till around 1.45 when the restaurant shut down.”
Incidentally, a couple of Bollywood celebrities including Shekhar Suman (who was with a friend) and Aseem Merchant were also present when Wasim and Sushmita made their entry. We called up Aseem Merchant but he refused to comment about the incident.
But a source said, “The friendship between Wasim and Sushmita started when they were judging Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena, a reality show. They have stayed in touch after that. At that point, Akram was married and Sushmita was dating Mudassar Aziz, the director of Dulha Mil Gaya. But they gradually got closer to each other after Wasim’s wife Huma passed away.
Since then, they have been spotted together at the odd social function, including a party at Shah Rukh Khan’s house (Wasim is the bowling coach of SRK’s cricket team, Kolkata Knight Riders) and then at model Candice Pinto’s party. But this is the first time they’ve publicly dated and it does indicate that they are a couple now.”

Is there a new Indo-Pak celeb love story on the cards? Rumours linking actress Sushmita Sen and former cricketer Wasim Akram have been flying around for a while now. Apparently, the two first met when they were hosts of a reality TV show some years ago. At the time, Wasim was happily married to Huma (who passed away last year).

It's only recently that Sushmita and Wasim have been spotted together in public. First they were seen at model Candice Pinto's birthday party, were they seemd to be having a lot of fun in each other's company. Wasim even put his face in a cut-out with a buffed body, to laughs from Sush.

Now, the couple have been seen together again. A few days ago, the two entered a popular club in Mumbai, and laughed and talked together until the place shut down at night. Mid-way through the evening, a few of Sushmita's friends joined the couple.

Former Pakistani cricketer finds her 'incredible'

Guess who's making former Pakistan cricket captain and swing king Wasim Akram sway to her tunes nowadays? Bollywood actress and former beauty queen Sushmita Sen.

Akram, who is currently co-judging an Indian reality TV show "Ek Khiladi Ek Hasina" with Sushmita, is totally gaga over the actress.

"I think she is an incredible person, very helpful, extremely professional and, yes, she has really made me comfortable on the show," Akram told IANS in an interview.

Akram first interacted with Sushmita in Dubai in 2006.

"I met her about two years ago in Dubai. We did a telethon for Imran Khan's cancer hospital together. That was two days in a row and almost three hours live on TV. So I got to interact with her. We managed to raise quite a bit of money," he said.

Sushmita was also one of the reasons why he agreed to be on the judging panel of this show.

"So far the game is really exciting and fun. It's something very different and that's why I agreed to the show and, plus, I was told that Sushmita would be there; so I agreed."

"Ek Khiladi Ek Hasina" airs on Colors and pits six pairs of a cricketer and a TV actress each to display their dancing skills. The cricketers on the show include S. Sreesanth, Harbhajan Singh, Vinod Kambli, Irfan Pathan, Dinesh Kartik and Nikhil Mehra.

In one of the recent episodes, Akram has been seen reciting shayari (Urdu couplets) to flatter the actress, but he has not shaken a leg with her so far. Any plans?

"Maybe. In fact, they have tried to make me dance, but I really can't handle that sort of pressure. Playing the world cup final twice was okay, but not this," he says.

Akram is also entirely dependent on Sushmita to judge the dancing capabilities of the contestants, as he "can't make out the head or tail of dancing".

"I wanted to see how the cricketers behave on the stage. I'm not judging the technicalities of their dance. For that Sushmita is there. I have no clue about dancing, what would I comment. I'm not looking at their steps at all. For me, their passion is important," he said.

He added: "We are not looking for a dance icon who would go into Bollywood and dance. The idea is to have cricketers dancing and see how they do on the stage. The girls, all six of them, are very talented and excellent. But, for the boys, it's a new thing."

So what is his criterion for judging? "For me it's like one day cricket - perform on the day, if you play well, you'll win."

Akram feels that though such a show will be a hit in Pakistan, not many cricketers there will agree to take part in it.

"It will be a big hit there no doubt, but where will the Pakistani cricketers dance there? I don't think the Pakistani cricketers will dance. First let them play well at least," he said and laughed.

A lot of actors in India and Pakistan are looking to make a mark in Bollywood, but Akram feels otherwise.

"I do enjoy acting and watching movies. But acting is a proper profession; you have to learn for it. I've seen cricketers who have done films. But after one or two films, they are not seen any more and I don't want to be one of them.

"I am happy to leave acting in Bollywood to Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Amitabh Bacchan - all these great actors," said Akram.

The Pakistan ex-cricket captain is spending more time in the city in his capacity as the bowling coach for Shah Rukh Khan’s IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders. He first met the actress in 2006 in Dubai for a charity event and they stayed in touch. Their camaraderie and chemistry was visible on a show that they judged together. But nothing happened at the time as he was still married, and the actress was involved with her Dulha Mil Gaya director Mudassar Aziz.

Sania Mirza to play tennis for another 3-4 years

After her controversial marriage to Pakistan cricket star, Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza has revealed that she plans to retain her maiden name.

"No matter what happens I am always going to be Sania Mirza. May be later I'll add his name," she said in an interview with People magazine.

23-year-old tennis star, who was accompanied by her husband, also said that she plans to only play for another three to four years.

To a question on how the newly-weds are planning to deal with the fact that they might be away from each other most of the time, Shoiab said, "We are going to be together for a lifetime so it won't be very difficult to stay away from each other for a few weeks or months."

Following this, Sania added, "Anyway, it's temporary. I'll probably play for another three to four years."

Sania also revealed that Shoaib wants to live in Palm Jumeirah and that she has no complaints about the place.

As to the honeymoon, Sania prefers Maldives, while Shoaib wants to go to Europe.

The cross-border couple not only gave credit to each other's disposition for making the much-contested and debated marriage possible, but also hailed Sania's parents for supporting them.

Sania-Shoaib couple has left for India after their walima reception in Lahore Tuesday which ended short of a fiasco as it was over-crowded with uninvited guests and unruly crowd, forcing Shoania to cut short their presence and leave from the party.
It was the second time, Shoania (Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik) were forced to leave their wedding reception early. The ‘unruly’ guests began forcing the newly-wed cross-border couple to pose of photographs, published reports have said.
While leaving for India, the Indo-Pak sports couple thanked Pearl Continental hotel’s management for “best arrangements” they had made for them.Shoaib Malik said Sania Mirza’s family was happy about their stay in Pakistan. Sania Mirza’s father and other family members termed their stay in Pakistan memorable.
Earlier reports said Shoaib Malik’s mother-in-law, Nasima Mirza, was adamant on selling coverage rights of the reception at Sialkot, as well as the walima in Lahore and other functions, ARY News reported on its website.
After Shoania arrived at the Pearl Continental hotel in Lahore on Friday, Malik reportedly threatened to vacate the place if the hotel management allowed any media personnel on the floor where Sania Mirza and he were staying.
Published reports have said that Sania and Shoaib, who got married earlier this month, wanted to cash in on their popularity in Pakistan and reportedly demanded Rs30-50 million from media groups for exclusive rights to their walima (marriage banquet)reception in Sialkot and Lahore.
Mirza and Malik had decided not to interact with Pakistani journalists till they sold the reception rights to the highest bidder, reported ARY News TV channel on its website on Tuesday.

Sources revealed that the ceremony ended before the scheduled time after some guests began behaving in an unruly manner.

However, the sources were of the opinion that the reception in Lahore was better organised thanthe Sunday, Apr 25 ceremony organised in Malik's hometown, Sialkot.

The provincial metropolis finally got the chance to be a part of the cross-border celebrations as the Walima of Shoaib Malik and Sania Mirza was held at a local hotel on Tuesday in the presence of Lahore’s elite amid strict security.

The Pakistani groom, donning a black suit, had a million dollar smile on his face while the Indian tennis ace seemed to be adapting quite well since landing in Pakistan. Sportsmen, politicians, showbiz personalities, businessmen and other influential people made up the guest list at the event at the Pearl Continental Hotel. Thousands of roses were used for decorating the Crystal Hall, arguably making it one of the grandest wedding receptions ever witnessed by the city. The glamorous evening passed off without any unpleasant incident and the families of the newlyweds seemed satisfied with the Walima arrangements.

However, the couple seemed ‘annoyed’ at the least by the overcrowding at their reception.

In complete observance of government policy, the guests were treated only to a one-dish menu and the event ended on the scheduled time of 10pm.

Hundreds of policemen were deployed in and around the hotel while plainclothes policemen had also been deputed at the function, which hosted around 1,000 guests. Traffic wardens were specially stationed at The Mall to maintain the smooth flow of traffic, although they were still unable to prevent a temporary jam at around 9pm.

Notable guests at the Walima included Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, Federal Minister for Population Welfare Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, the prime minister’s son Qadir Gillani and a number of people from the world of showbiz.

The couple and their relatives left the hall soon after the mishap.

Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik’s planned reception at a hotel to celebrate his wedding to Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has run into a trouble in view of an official ban on serving more than one dish at marriage functions.
Shoaib has made arrangements for hosting a ‘walima’ (reception) for 500 people at the Pearl Continental Hotel on April 22 but official regulations have ensured that the cricketer cannot offer a variety of delicious dishes to his guests.
The cricketer has asked the hotel’s management to prepare a chicken ’salan’ (dish with gravy) with rice, roti and nan. Besides, a separate vegetarian dish will be prepared for Shoaib’s guests from India. ‘Gulab jamuns’ and ‘ras malai’ will be served as dessert.
According to Indian Media Reports, “We have a booking (by Shoaib) for 500 guests on April 22,” Pearl Continental’s public relations manager Alia Tariq was quoted as saying here on Wednesday.
She said the hotel would have to implement the Punjab government’s order to serve only one dish at wedding and ‘walima’ ceremonies.
“Though Shoaib and Sania’s marriage is of VVIP nature, we will have to implement the government’s order unless there is some other direction from the authorities,” Tariq said.
“We will also provide one night’s stay to the couple as it is part of our walima package. Of course we will decorate their room well and give them a rosy reception,” she said.
The PML-N-led government of Punjab province introduced the one-dish rule for marriage functions as part of a slew of austerity measures.
