Shell Museum Hosting Founder of PURRE to address: “WATER QUALITY –Cleaning up our own Backyard”, Sanibel FL

On Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at 2:00 p.m., Mike Valiquette, founder of People United to Restore our Rivers and Estuaries (PURRE), will present a talk entitled, “Water Quality - Cleaning up our Own backyard.”

Florida residents’ lifestyles and its water are inseparably linked. Yet storm water runoff full of chemicals from agricultural operations and fertilized landscapes is allowed to drain untreated into local water. Overflow from sewage and septic systems fouls local water. Dangerous algae outbreaks plague Florida’s beaches, lakes, rivers, and estuaries, killing wildlife and closing swimming areas.

According to Valiquette, “The Lee County basin is being assaulted by sewer outlets dumping beyond allowable levels and by storm water runoff.”

Believing that only educated citizens can make a difference, through presentations and media releases, PURRE is sharing with the citizens of southwest Florida the current state of local water quality. Their efforts are devoted to keeping these issues in the forefront in order to foster change related to current policies that negatively impact rivers, bays, and estuaries – the lifeblood of Florida’s beauty, quality of life, and economy.

Royal Shell, Car Show, PURRE

If you love your car, or love to look at cars, we have a day planned for you! Saturday, March 20 marks the 2nd Annual Tahitian Gardens Car Show on Sanibel. This island style event is open to all types of vehicles and this year benefits PURRE (People United to Restore our Rivers and Estuaries). The Royal Shell Companies (www.royalshell.com, www.royalshellsales.com) and Performance Plus are working to make this a very special day.

This show brings in cars from on and off the island.

The much awaited film,  Alice in Wonderland, will have its first show today at 3:30pm. The other times are 6:00pm and 8:30pm. Watching the earthquake coverage of Haiti, Sanibel resident and physical therapist Rachel Tritaik, like many, was deeply concerned.  Without adequate therapy and equipment, the thousands of earthquake survivors with amputations will face immeasurable challenges if they are unable to walk. “Close friends of mine, a prosthetist and a fellow physical therapist, will be travelling to Haiti this spring to volunteer with the organization Healing Hands for Haiti. After providing physical therapy services to many amputees in my career, I know how important appropriate walking aids are to being independent, so I’ve decided to organize a donation drive for mobility devices” says Rachel.  “Healing Hands for Haiti has provided rehabilitation services and educational programs in Haiti for 10 years.  They operated the only physical rehabilitation clinic in the country, and the clinic was 80% destroyed during the earthquake.”

Local Therapist Organizes Equipment Donation Drive for Haiti

Physicians for Peace is a partner organization that collects medical supplies for distribution to Haiti.  Rachel will be shipping the donated items to Physicians for Peace with help from Gene Routh, of Pak-n-Ship of Sanibel.  Donations of crutches, walkers, canes, wheelchairs, braces, prosthetics, wheelchairs and transfer boards are needed.  Items should be brought to the new Island Therapy Center, located at 2242 Periwinkle Way in the Sanibel Square, from 9:00am to 4:00 pm Monday to Friday, until April 16^th.

The clinic’s Grand Opening will be held March 10^th from 5:30 to 7:00 pm, and Rachel hopes to collect additional equipment and tax-deductible donations for Healing Hands for Haiti at that time too.  Non-perishable food items will also be accepted for the FISH food pantry.
