The trip took a dramatic turn on Feb. 4 when all three members of the family crashed head-first into a boulder, leaving the mother dead and the 4-year-old daughter in the intensive care unit.

The family had gone sledding in the area of Mount Baldy to celebrate their daughter’s birthday in the snow.

The mother, identified by her loved ones as Lisa Mao, “took the brunt of the impact while trying her best to shield her husband and daughter” and died shortly after the impact, the family said in a GoFundMe.

“Pretty much right away, I was told that my wife was dead,” said Dahveed Kolodny-Nagy, of Alhambra, as he recalled the events of that day. “I was told my daughter is in critical [condition] and it sounded like she most likely won’t survive. And I was beside myself with grief.”

He said their toddler, Nova, suffered head and internal injuries, a broken arm and was in a medically induced coma for weeks. He said her brain was “damaged in four different places.”

Kolodny-Nagy said he was able to call for help after the crash and get his wife and daughter airlifted to a hospital.

“There was bruises all over [Nova], and there was no way I could call it quits,” the father said.

After weeks in pain and loss, the family is turning grief into hope, strength and gratitude as they count their blessings while continuing to fight on.

“I had to be strong, and I had to fight,” Kolodny-Nagy said. “My daughter, she’s so strong and she’s such a fighter just like her mom, so I had to be there for my daughter.”

The girl is still recovering from her injuries but is now in stable condition after multiple surgeries and spending weeks in the hospital. Kolodny-Nagy said he’s hoping his daughter makes a full recovery.

“As a father, I am always looking for big dramatic moments. My daughter’s first word. Her first steps. Nova’s improvements are so gradual that even watching them with a microscope I am bound to miss something,” Kolodny-Nagy wrote last month about his daughter’s progress. “But that doesn’t make them any less significant.”

While the 34-year-old mother and wife is no longer with the family, her presence is still felt by all those who knew her.

“This is the first Mother’s Day that I don’t have my wife, and Nova’s mom, on my side,” Kolodny-Nagy told KTLA. “My message to you guys watching this is, be grateful for the blessings in your life. None of us know how long we have each other, so take advantage of that time.”

The family has raised more than $74,000 as of Monday morning on a GoFundMe account. They say the donations have been going to Nova’s hospital expenses and that some will go toward Lisa Mao’s funeral, which is set for June 25.

The crash was reported at 8:17 p.m. Sunday at 1900 Hotel Circle North in Mission Valley West, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.

The 19-year-old man driving a westbound 2015 Dodge Dart apparently did not see the skateboarder who was in the same westbound lane and struck him, Heims said.

The victim suffered a fracture to the right leg and major trauma considered life-threatening, the officer said.

Police said the incident was reported at about 8 p.m. at a Houston home, according to KHOU.

The tiger, which was wearing a collar, was seen in a neighborhood front yard before someone came out of the house and took it inside, reported KHOU.

In one video posted to social media, a man later identified as an off-duty sheriff’s deputy is seen outside holding a gun while shouting at the person taking the tiger inside, reported KHOU.

The deputy said he pointed his weapon at the cat, not people, to protect the neighborhood, according to KHOU.

Social media was buzzing over the incident. One person tweeted, “The heck! Why is there a tiger?!”

Witnesses said the tiger was later put in an SUV and driven away.

“Right after they brought it back inside they loaded it into an SUV and barreled out of their driveway over the lawn and fled from the police,” tweeted someone identified as “a Dan of action.”

Police did not immediately announce any charges or release further information about Sunday’s tiger incident, KHOU reported.

Now Crocs says it’s doing it again as a way to say thank you to those who battled on the front lines of COVID-19.

In March 2020, Crocs launched its new program, “A Free Pair for Healthcare,” offering free Crocs to doctors, nurses and other health care staff members. Crocs reports sales have soared within the last year.

Just a few months ago, rapper Post Malone partnered with Crocs and Musicians on Call to donate thousands of pairs of shoes to caregivers and staff in 70 U.S. hospitals.

In an image shared by Chinese state media Xinhua on Chinese social media site Weibo, a person can be seen clinging to the rail of the bridge, surrounded by missing and damaged glass platform panels.

The bridge is located in the Piyan Mountain Cultural Tourism Scenic Area outside the city of Longjing. According to a statement posted on the Weibo account of local authorities, the incident took place at 12:45 p.m. on Friday, when was hit by record-high winds of up to 150 kilometers per hour.

Officials say rescue teams were called in to assist the stranded tourist, who was able to evacuate the bridge at 1:20 p.m.

“The staff of the scenic area rushed to the scene as soon as possible, brought emergency equipment and successfully transferred the trapped person to a safe area,” said the statement.

“There were no casualties. After being kept in the hospital for observation, the trapped person was in stable emotional and physical condition and has been discharged from the hospital.”

The entire Piyan Mountain Scenic Area has since been closed and officials have ordered a comprehensive safety inspection of all attractions in the area, including the bridge.

Netizens question safety of glass bridges

China is famed for its record-breaking glass bridges, which are popular tourist attractions. These include a new 526-meter-long structure in Qingyuan, Guangdong, which holds the Guinness World Record for longest glass-bottom bridge.

But the incident in Jilin province has some netizens in China expressing alarm.

“Things I worried about have happened — [I will] never risk trying dangerous things in the future,” said one user on the Weibo social media site.

According to a report by Xinhua, some local governments have already put additional safety guidelines in place.

For instance, north China’s Hebei Province — home to a 488-meter-long bridge in the Hongyagu Scenic Area — released new technical standards in 2018 for glass bridges and scenic area walkways, providing specific guidelines for materials, location, design and construction.

“For example, glass bridges should not be built in areas with high seismic activity and must be closed during bad weather and natural disasters, and the number of pedestrians on such bridges and walkways will be limited to no more than three per square meter,” says the report.

The sirens came Monday, shortly after the Hamas militant group in Gaza had set a deadline for Israel to remove its security forces from the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Abu Obeida, spokesman for Hamas’ military wing, said the rocket attack was a response to what he called Israeli “crimes and aggression” in Jerusalem. “This is a message the enemy has to understand well,” he said.

He threatened more attacks if Israel again invades the Al-Aqsa compound or carries out evictions of Palestinian families in a neighborhood of east Jerusalem.

All capacity restrictions in Nashville put in place amid the pandemic will be lifted in mid-May with the city’s indoor mask mandate remaining in effect, according to Metro health officials. The total number of confirmed and probable cases grew by 93 in the past 72 hours. There have been a total of 908 deaths in Davidson County.

A reported 96,611 individuals have recovered from the virus. Of the confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Davidson County, 1,087 are “active.”

The age range of patients is from one month old to 107 years old, 46,875 of which are men, 50,981 are women and the gender of 750 patients is unknown.

The health department reported available hospital beds in Nashville are at 17% and available ICU beds are at 15%.

Officers said they responded after 8:30 a.m. to reports of a shooting along I-24 westbound at Harding Place.

While police have not released any additional information, a spokesperson for the Nashville Fire Department said a person has been found deceased at the location.

No additional information was immediately released.
