It’s almost time for the 13th Annual Jog-A-Thon fundraiser on Thursday, May 24th. This is a high energy and fun event at which our students, staff and parent volunteers all have a great time. We will need lots of volunteers to help count laps that afternoon. If you are interested in cheering on our kids you can email Angela Hyde at seekthehydes@comcast.net to sign up.

Bike To School Day

Sanislo Elementary and the Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation reminds you that Friday, May 18th is Bike to School Day! For more information check out Cascade’s website at http://www.cbcef.org/bts/index.html. There will be donuts waiting for kids the ride their bike to Sanislo on Friday.

Teacher Appreciation Week

Recognize Your Favorite Teacher(s)

Recognizing the remarkable impact that teachers have on students every day, Kidd Valley and Ivar’s are teaming up for the ninth annual Teacher of the Year contest. All students 14 years or younger are invited to nominate their favorite teacher(s) by filling out an entry form at any Ivar’s or Kidd Valley location throughout the Puget Sound (excluding stadium locations), completing the Ivar’s online form or Kidd Valley online form by May 20, 2012.

Winners will be announced mid-June. The two teachers chosen as Ivar’s and Kidd Valley’s 2012 Teacher of the Year will receive a $500 gift certificate for classroom supplies at the store of their choice. Also, the student who nominates the winning teachers will be rewarded with an Ivar’s chowder party – and a visit by Ivar’s famous Dancing Clam – or Kidd Valley burger party for their entire class (with school permission)!

2e Parent Support Group

For parents/guardians who have kids with disabilities (learning, mental, emotional, medical) and who are also in SPS advanced learning programs (ALO, Spectrum, APP).

The next meeting is scheduled for: Monday, May 217:00pm at Lincoln High School Library in Wallingford

No topic, no speakers, just a chance to get together and talk about issues, successes, failures, and to help each other. As crunch time for the end of the school year approaches, it would also be good to talk about what we can do over the summer to help support our kids. If there is anything specific you want to talk about, or would like to be added to the email list, please email Stephanie Bower at stbower@comcast.net.

Books for Summer Reading!
Monday morning I learned that The Seattle Public Library Foundation has found a way to send up to 2000 in books our way in time for summer reading! Wow! We’ll save some for our library, some for classroom collections….and many, many for Sanislo students to take home! They’ll first be made available at our May 31st Family Literacy night, then again with the last week of school.

Scholastic Book Fair Is 3 Weeks Away
The last week of May we will be holding another Scholastic Book Fair, and the library is looking for parents to help staff the sale. We will set up mid-day on Tuesday May 29th and open for business from 3:30-4:15pm on Tuesday-Friday, and 8:30-9:30am on Monday-Friday, in addition to being open for the evening Family Literacy event. If you (or a talented teenage sibling) can spare an hour or two to help, please contact Mr. Seasholes in the library. The sale brings books and income to the library to keep Sanislo readers growing!

As National Poetry comes to a close, I want to repeat the invitation to students and families to submit poems for our Sanislo Chinook 2012 Poetry Anthology. Take a moment to pen a family poem and send it in, by email if you like clseasholes@seattleschools.org before May 15th.

Year-End Student Readings

Writers in the Schools (WITS) features readings from more than 50 students from the 26 sites in the 2011-12 WITS program including Sanislo Elementary. Hosted at the Seattle Public Library – May 22nd at 6pm and May 23rd at 6pm. Free and open to the public.

Captain Sanislo’s Benefit Bash

The Annual Fund party was a smashing success! It was an evening of laughter, dancing, eating, playing, silliness and generosity – all the attributes of a great community. We raised nearly $6,924 for the annual fund in one night! Hurrah!

Thank you to all the hard-working folks that put this together – with especially loud shout outs to Julie Robinson-Jasper, Ivan Miller, Matt Knannlein, Lisa Keith and Laura Probst.

Cinco de Mayo

Come on out for our third annual Cinco de Mayo celebration at Sanislo. We’ll be celebrating this special day onThursday, May 3rd from 5 till 7 pm at Sanislo. This year we’ll have performances, both singing and dancing, by students, staff and families. This is always a very fun evening full of socializing, eating and making music that celebrates our cultural connections with Mexico.

This year we’re asking families to bring a favorite dish for a potluck. So bring something yummy in a dish with your name on it (it’s easier to get dishes back if they’re labeled).

If you can volunteer for decorating, set up, serving food or clean up, please call Gail at206-252-8380 and let us know. There will also be a sign up sheet at school in the hall.

Fundraising Call for HELP

The PTA would like to let all of you know how much we appreciate the parents of Sanislo for your tireless efforts in helping raise money. Even with the huge success of the Annual Fund party, we still have a long way to go to hit our fundraising goal. If we cannot raise the remaining funds, some of our great Sanislo programs will not happen next year.
Please do what you can- every contribution is valuable and very much needed. We are also interested in any creative ideas you might have, so please pass them on at the next PTA meeting or directly to Elisabeth Silver at esilver@ecchorizon.com.
