An interview with children's book author and illustrator, Sannel Larson

What started your interest in writing Children’s books?

I loved to read as a child. I remember the joy and excitement I felt each time I opened the cover of a new book, knowing a world of imagination and new friends would take over my mind until the last page was read. At a certain age I realized that stories and illustrations did not just happen but were actually written and illustrated by real people, that’s when the dream of being one of those people started. By the time I could write, I used to write stories of my own. However, due to circumstances, called life, my childhood dream came true very late in life.

How did you come up with the title?

The titles to my books always seems to come easily to me. Well at least they have so far.

Having had both playful kittens and puppies in the house, I know what kind of trouble their mischievous acts can lead them to. How many times have I not myself shouted;

"Bad, bad kitten or bad, bad puppy

now look at what you have done!

Such a mess you have made

just to play and to have fun!"

So the title for my book about Melvin, a very naughty and mischievous kitten, came quite naturally.

How do you come up with ideas for your characters?

I never plan my stories or my characters. They kind of take shape on my drawing pad or as soon as I start to write. My imagination has always worked better if nothing is planned. I don’t say this is the right way but it works for me.

What books have most influenced your life?

Stories that we read in childhood stay with us forever. Elsa Beskow’s and Astrid Lindgren’s fairy tales with their wonderful illustrations have in some way shaped my life with their imaginative work. I loved to read their stories as a child and I could sit for hours looking at the whimsical and enchanting drawings. I truly believe those two Swedish authors triggered my big imagination and the love I have myself to illustrate and write for children.

"The Wonderful Adventures of Nils" by Selma Lagerlöf is a wonderful, funny and imaginative story.

I read this classic as a very young girl and fell in love with it. This fairy tale teaches us the important lessons about protecting the earth and living creatures.

Later in life I read "A Piece of Cake" by Cupcake Brown. It may not be the most well written book, but the story of Cupcake Brown is truly fantastic and inspiring. It’s an amazing story that teaches us all that we can do better with our lives if we set our mind and heart to it. Truly a motivational read!

Not long ago a dear friend of mine gave me "Tales of a Wounded Healer" by Mariah Fenton Gladys. It’s an inspirational read by a remarkable woman, sharing powerful insights into healing and wholeness.

What are your current projects?

Currently, I’m doing the illustrations for my next children’s book. The story is about angels and will once again be narrated in silly rhyme and rhythm with lots of whimsical drawings to look at. It will be a fun book to read out loud to the little ones. Reading poetry aloud to a child is such an enriching experience and also a very important way of connecting with them. By simply reading poetry to children we help them to understand phonemic awareness that is crucial for the child to avoid later learning problems and make reading and writing easier for them.

I am also working on my second poetry book. Just like my first poetry book, "Scent of a Haiga" I’ll combine my poetry with my love for photography.

What was the hardest part of writing?

Those first few words. Once I get those down, the rest just seems to fall into place.

Distractions are also a big issue. Distractions are always getting in the way of my writing.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Read and write as much as you can, and write about what you love and know well.

My Very Best Friend!

It's been a few days now

since I kissed him goodbye.

My friend took off without me

through the snow-flurried sky.

He were too tired and too old

to leave without some assistance,

so God sent him a pair of wings

'cause to heaven is quite a distance.

Through the snow flurries he flew

higher and further he went away

while my teardrops was falling

as I wanted my best friend to stay.

My friend was not an ordinary friend

No, he was quite special and unique.

Sure, he had a nose, four paws and tail

with the most kind and gentle streak.

While friends have come and gone

he were constantly by my side

never questioning, never judging,

his own interests he always set aside.

He truly was a special friend

the kind you can not replace.

His selfless acts of kindness

made my world a better place.

From now on I must carry on

without my dearest, best friend.

I must dry my endless tears

and my broken heart mend.

One day we'll be together again,

as best friends ought to be.

On the lush meadows in heaven

he'll be waiting patiently for me.

But until that day comes

he'll be with me wherever I go.

For as long as there is a memory,

he'll live on in my heart, I know.

In memory of my beloved friend Max.

He's been my constant companion

since the day I rescued him, thirteen years ago.

He was my light, my life, my love, my everything!

My only hope and wish is that he'll wait at heavens gate for me when the day comes,

because I would give anything to look once more into the loving eyes of my Max.

At the moment I'm in the midst of reading “Selected Poems” by the Swedish poet and the winner of the Nobel Prize, Tomas Tranströmer. I have wanted to read this poet's work for so long, but never had the chance until now.This is one of those books I know, I'll never be finished reading. Not because it's no good, but because this book is endless reading. Page after page provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a fascinating poet. There is so much to discover within the poems of this Swedish writer, and I need to read his works over and over again, to be able to soak up everything he has to offer.Tranströmer takes you through so many emotions just with a few chosen words.There are few writers/poets who have that gift. This book will always hold a special place in my heart, as well as a special place on my nightstand.

Tomas Gösta Tranströmer (Known to the world as author, Tomas Tranströmer) is a Swedish leading and most influential contemporary poet, psychologist and translator. Born 15 April 1931, in Stockholm. Tranströmer is very well known in his homeland Sweden, and is acclaimed as one of the most important Scandinavian writers since the Second World War. His books sell thousands of copies in Sweden. Besides being a brilliant writer, he also has a successful career as a respected psychologist behind him. Tranströmer is also known as a skilled literary translator, entomologist, and classical pianist.

Tomas Tranströmer is recently known for being awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Literature. He has now become the eight Swedish winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. However, he is no stranger to awards. He has already collected the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, the Bonnier Award for Poetry, the Golden Wreath of the Struga Poetry Evenings, the Petrarch-Preis in Germany, Swedish Academy’s Nordic Prize, the Oevralids Prize, and the Swedish Award from International Poetry Forum. In 2007, Tomas Tranströmer received a special Lifetime Recognition Award given by the trustees of the Griffin Trust for Excellence in Poetry, which also awards the annual Griffin Poetry Prize.

Early life
Tranströmer was born to Gösta and Helmy Tranströmer. The father was a journalist and the mother a schoolteacher. At the age of three, the parents divorced and left the young boy with a strong void of a father figure in his life. As a student he received his secondary education at the Södra Latin School in Stockholm, where his interest for poetry started.

Tranströmer spent much of his childhood summers on Runmarö Island, a small Island in the Stockholm archipelago. Those summers and that landscape became the birth for his nostalgic and the aesthetic tradition of Swedish nature poems, Östersjöar (1974 ) Baltics (1975) and his memoir Minnena ser mig (1993 ) (The memories see me).

Tomas Tranströmer artistic talents showed early on in his life. As a child he started to play piano and beside the poetry it became another passion of his. Besides selected poems published in journals, his literary debut took place at the early age of 23. In 1954 this talented young man published his first collection of poems. 17 dikter (17 poems.) It has been considered one of the most acclaimed literary debuts of that decade.

The young man continued his education at Stockholm's University, graduating as a psychologist, with additional studies in literature, religion and history. After he graduated, he started to work in 1957, at the Institution for Psychometric at Stockholm University. In 1960, he was employed as a psychologist at the Roxtuna center for juvenile offenders. He worked there for six years while he continued to write poetry.

In 1958, he married Monica Blach, and has raised two daughters. In 1965, Tranströmer moved with his family to Västerås, one of the oldest cities in Sweden, located on the shore of Lake Mälaren where he spent the rest of his working life.

Tomas Tranströmer's Poetry

This poet's work is distinguished by a sense of mystery and unseen, underlying the routine of everyday life. He explores the connections between the visible and the invisible, the realms of the conscious and subconscious. A quality which often gives his poems a religious dimension. He has therefore been labeled as a Christian poet. Much of Tranströmer's poetry captures the world from a greater height along with the atmospheric beauty of the long harsh Swedish winters and the Swedish seasons along with its nature.

Tranströmer's most notable works are Klanger och spår (Windows and Stones) and Den stora gåtan (The Great Enigma.)

His poetry has been translated into over 60 languages and critics have held his poetry in high regard for its accessibility in the translations.

His longtime friendship with the American poet and author Robert Bly has made a big impact in the Swedish poet's life. The two poet's works are often read in conjunction. The American poet has also translated and edited some of Tranströmer's work. It was Robert Bly who first introducing his friend's work to the United States in 1960, and their of more 25 years of correspondence has been published in the book 'Air Mail.'

In 1990, a year after the publication of his tenth book of poems, he suffered a debilitating stroke that paralyzed the right side of his body and affected his speech. Despite this, he hasn't let his paralysis stop him. In 1996, he published his collection, Sorgegondolen (Grief Gondola). The poet continues to write, producing over five new works since his stroke, including his memoirs. After his stroke he has remarkably trained himself to play the piano with his left hand. Tranströmer has developed into a proficient pianist and often performs one handed piano concerts in Sweden and throughout Europe.

Book Review:

Melvin. . . Bad, bad kitten! by Sannel Larson is an absolutely delightful book about the antics of Melvin the cat. The book is adorable and will remind you of the antics of the pets you have at home. You will start looking them in a different light after reading this amusing book. All pets have an identity of their own and Melvin has his. The author has written it in a very silly manner with some rhyming verses that will appeal to small children. Melvin is a naughty kitten that makes children laugh with his behavior.

It's a beautiful book of verses which the author has penned, keeping in mind the youthful audience. Children love to read anything silly and light and the author has written just that with Melvin, the cat, as the main character of the book. The illustrations are really cute. I found the illustration with the strawberry nose hilarious. The illustrator has also created something that is so appealing to a child.

The author's love for children is evident in the book. It is one of the cutest cat stories/verses I have read in recent times. It is so difficult to say what I liked most about the book. Everything is so appealing and cuddly. Kids are also introduced to rhyming verses in a very subtle way, getting them into reading verses and trying to write or recite small rhyming poems. Absolutely delightful and a treat for young readers.

Mediterranean Cooking - Means Healthy Eating

Greece will always be my "second home" in my heart. Greece was the place I enjoyed cooking more than usual. I guess the lovely surroundings and the gorgeous weather has something to do with it, but the main reason probably is the abundance of fresh local vegetables. The Greeks feel the need to share what nature has provided, and it's so charming to have my next door neighbors bringing me vegetables and fruit from their gardens, like tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, watermelons or whatever that's in season.

As a vegetarian, I find the Greek cuisine to be extremely satisfying, since fresh vegetables, olive oil and herbs are the basics in most of the dishes. However, meat can be added to many of the dishes, or they all can be excellent side dishes to those who prefers a piece of meat, chicken or fish to go with their meal.

Eggplants (aubergines) are popular in Greek cooking and very versatile. I believe, I could write a Greek cookbook alone, about this immensely useful and tasteful vegetable.

I'll share with you one of my favorite Greek eggplant dishes. This dish has all the classic Greek tastes; eggplant, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, olive oil and oregano. During the extremely hot season, I usually cooked the meal in the morning, to be eaten cold for lunch or dinner. It's more tasteful that way. However, it can be enjoyed as a hot meal as well.

Greek Stew of Eggplant and Potatoes ( Melitzanes sti Katsarola)

Prep Time: 25 minutes

Cook Time: 35-40 minutes
Yield: serves 4

Ingredients:

1 pound of eggplants, peel half the skin away from the eggplants in long strips, so that they look stripy. Cut in egg-sized chunks

2 pounds of potatoes, peeled, cut in large chunks

2 medium red onions, (finely diced)

2 cloves garlic (finely chopped)

1 green bell pepper (diced)

2 Carrots (diced)

1 bunch of fresh parsley, (chopped)

2 cups of pulped stewed tomatoes (or 1 can tinned tomatoes, pureed)

6 tbsp of olive oil

1 1/4 cups of water

1/2 teaspoon of salt

1/2 teaspoon of black pepper

1 teaspoon of oregano

Crumbled Feta cheese. Can be replaced with Graviera.

Directions:

Heat 6 tbsp of oil in a deep stew pot.

Saute the onions until tender.

Add the, garlic, bell peppers, carrots, eggplants, parsley, potatoes, pulped tomatoes, olive oil, salt , pepper and oregano

Mix until well combined.

Saute for 1-2 minutes.

Add the water.

Bring to a boil.

Lower the heat. Cover.

Let it cook over medium heat for 30-35 minutes or until the potatoes are done and most of the juices are absorbed.

Take the pot off from the heat.

Sprinkle the feta cheese or Graviera cheese on top, and let it melt.

Serve it hot or cold with olives and a slice of feta cheese.

A Beautiful Collection of Poetry

Crete - An Island of Wondrous and Unspoiled Beauty

The Greek island of Crete, is a place with unbelievable natural beauty and old charm. A place that I consider unique. Crete is a place blessed by a people friendly climate of long hot summers and short mild winters. This island combines the clean, turquoise sea with rough mountains, lush vineyards, olive groves and citrus orchards.

Almyrida Beach

There is a small and picturesque mountain village named Plaka, which I have fond memories of. This charming village with the traditional stone-built houses and spectacular view, is just so lovely. At the break of dawn the neighbor's rooster wakes every one up, followed by the distant bleat of the goats and dogs barking. As the cool morning turned warmer the cicada sounds grew louder and louder.

The uneven and narrow roads are winding in-between the stone-built homes there cats and a salamander or two may cross your path. The life here is very simple with no stress. Here people say hello with a smile, and may even invite you to sit down for a leisurely talk over a glass of Raki, (a strong distilled spirit containing approximately 37 per cent alcohol per volume and is produced from the must-residue of the wine-press.)

The Cretan locals are famous for its hospitality and generosity, so do not be surprised if they welcome you to join them for food and wine, or bring you vegetables and fruits from their garden.

The cafe is a wonderful place to hang out and meet our friends. We can always be ascertained of a warm welcome and excellent coffee served by Em.

Michael Friedman's, Emerald Wells Cafe, spoke to me from the very first page. I immediately connected with the likable characters like Emmy, Earl, Harold, Carl, Rose and Dale the Sheriff who lives in the wonderful small town, Emerald Wells, just off the crossroads and Highway 27, Texas.

The author lets us into the lives of the folks in Emerald Wells, in an era, simpler and kinder, when people actually had time to care and talk to their neighbors. Emerald Wells Cafe is a home away from home to the folks who lives in the town, and each chapter will bring you humor, drama, dilemmas, adventure, romance, a dash of poetry and yes, nostalgia. It did not take many pages before I felt close to the characters, and truly fell in love with the little town and its inhabitants.

The book is extraordinarily good and I'm amazed how fast I read this book. But the author's writing is so captivating and engaging that I did not want to stop turning the pages. I kept saying to myself, just one more page. . .

Emerald Wells Cafe is an absolutely delightful book and I am so glad I read it. Michael Friedman is an amazing writer, and this well-written and highly recommendable story left me smiling. I truly loved it! If you haven't read Emerald Wells Cafe I suggest you give it a try. It's more than worth it!

The other day I went to an art exhibition in the small seaside town of Stenungsund, Sweden, there many artists had a chance to display their creativity. I enjoyed strolling through the exhibition, admiring the craftsmanship of so many fine artists. However, I admit, it was the young artist, Ronja Risberg and her artistry who caught my attention. Ronja Risberg has big talent with little things like this miniature artwork. Her dexterity and inventiveness in her fine details, using ink and watercolor, brought much joy to the eye and the mind. I truly hope to see more of this aspiring young artist and her work in the near future.

A week ago, I wrote about Elsa Beskow, a Swedish children's book author and illustrator. Once again, I'll write about another great author of children's books. Perhaps one of the most famous children's book authors in the world. I'm talking about the Swedish author, Astrid Lindgren.

The books we read as children do leave a strong impression that will last a lifetime. I loved to read as a child and my reading habit began very early. At first I was only able to look at the wonderful illustrations in the books. However, when I was able to read on my own, a whole new treasure trove, rich in imagination opened up to me. I remember escaping in between the covers of the book and become one of the characters. I let the imaginative world take over my mind until the last chapter was read.

The very funny "Karlson On the Roof"

One of my favorite children's book authors was, and still is, Astrid Lindgren. This Swedish writer is without a doubt one of the most eminent children's authors in the world. However, growing up in Sweden, I never thought of her as famous, just a fun, cool lady with great imagination and the mother of Pippi Longstocking, Emil of Lönneberga, Karlsson on the roof, Seacrow Island, the Bill Bergson series, the children of the noisy village, the brothers Lionheart and many many more.

Astrid Anna Emilia Ericsson, known to the world as author Astrid Lindgren was born November 14th 1907, and grew up in her family's farm in the small town of Vimmerby in the south of Sweden.
Astrid Lindgren's own happy childhood playing in the farm, horseback riding through green forests in summer and swimming in the lakes under the midnight-sun, skated on frozen ponds and lakes in winter and went cray fishing in the fall, would present her later with the inspiration for all her wonderful stories.

At the age of 16, she began training as a journalist. Two years later she moved to Stockholm after she became pregnant while unmarried. There she worked as a secretary. Her son Lars was born on December 4 1926. Eventually, at the age of 24 she married the father, Sture Lindgren and in 1934, they had a daughter, Karin.

This red-haired girl has done wonders for equality between the sexes, encouraged young girls to believe in themselves and have fun.

Pippi Longstocking
In 1944, she published her first book. It was a story for teen-age girls called "Britt-Mari Opens Her Heart". However, it was the year after when she published through a small editing house, the story of the popular character Pippi Longstocking that she achieved great success and apparently saved the editors from bankruptcy. Her editors Rabén & Sjögren are today the leading publishing house for children in Sweden.

This red-haired and freckled girl became an instant hit among children, but parents was concerned and shocked at first by the disobedient and headstrong Pippi, who revolted against society and gladly mocked charity ladies and institutions like the police. This determined, red-haired girl called Pippi Långstrump “Pippi Longstocking” has done wonders for equality between the sexes, encouraged young girls to believe in themselves and have fun. Pippi Longstocking has been translated into more than 70 languages and published in more than 100 countries.

Astrid Lindgren is and always will be a part of our Swedish culture

Astrid Lindgren produced about 80 books altogether and has sold more than 145 million copies worldwide and is the world's 18th most translated author. Many of her stories have been made into films and television and taken into theater, like Karlsson-on-the-Roof.
She was awarded many Swedish and international prizes for her books, among them the Hans Christian Andersen medal in 1958, which is considered the ultimate accolade for an author of children's books. After her death in 2002, the Government of Sweden established the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) in her honor. The ALMA is the world's most valuable children and youth literature award.
Astrid Lindgren fought for children's rights and animal welfare. In 1998, she induced an animal rights bill into law. The same year the Astrid Lindgren's Children's Hospital opened and is one of the biggest children hospitals in northern Europe.
In 1952, her husband Sture Lindgren died at the age of 53, of internal hemorrhage. Astrid Lindgren never remarried. Her son Lars “ Lasse” Lindgren died in 1986. The son once said about his mother; She wasn't the kind of mother who would sit quiet on a park-bench, watching her children play. She wanted to play herself and I suspect she found it as much fun as I did.
In 1987, she wrote her last piece, a short mystery story.
A theme park, displaying several of the settings from her books, opened in 1989 in her hometown, and attracts over 300,000 visitors yearly.

Stories that we read in childhood stay with us forever and Elsa Beskow's fairy tales with its wonderful illustrations has in some way shaped my life with her imaginative work. I loved to read her fairy tales as a child and I could sit for hours watching her whimsical and enchanting drawings. I truly believe she triggered my big imagination and the love I have myself to illustrate and write for children.

Elsa Beskow was a Swedish author and illustrator, known for her beloved children's stories and picture books. She truly was a remarkably talented person, full of vim and vigor, and was referred to as the Beatrix Potter of Scandinavia. She was known for her masterly attention to detail, as her stories often contained teensy-weensy heroes.

Elsa Beskow combined reality with fairy tales. She made water lilies, chanterelle's and even the smallest blueberry all came to life in her richly colored and detailed work. As much as I admire today's digital art, I can't but help to adore the detailed “old school art” of illustrations that's so typical of Elsa Beskow. For you who may not heard, or may not know so much about this Swedish author, here I have put together some interesting facts about this intriguing woman and her life.

Elsa Beskow's Early Years

Elsa Beskow was born as Elsa Maartman in Stockholm, Sweden on February 11, 1874. Her father, Bernt Maartman, had a Norwegian background while her mother, Augusta Fahlstedt was Swedish. Elsa had four younger sisters and one older brother. Elsa Beskow showed very early her ability to make up fairy tale stories. Even before she was able to speak properly, she started to tell stories to her brother who helped her out with words and the plots. At an early age she showed her talent and her love for drawing as well, and she loved to draw images of nature such as flowers, trees and berries.

Elsa Beskow was brought up in a liberal home and she was taught to stand up for her beliefs. Many of her beliefs and values was expressed in her children's picture books. She vouched for freedom of speech for everyone in her book “The flower festival” written 1914. Some say that Mrs Chestnut, in her loose-fitting dress, is portrayed as pregnant - a daring and bold thing to do at a time when the middle classes were of the opinion that pregnant women should be kept behind closed doors and out of sight.

When Elsa was 15 years old her father died of pneumonia, leaving his wife Augusta and six children alone and the family's economic affairs in ruin. Augusta and the children moved in with Augusta's unmarried sisters and brother, who at the time were already living together. Elsa Beskow's years living with her aunt and uncle inspired her “Aunt-series” of books: Aunt Green, Aunt Brown and Aunt Lavender (1918) Aunt Brown's Birthday ( 1925 ) Peter and Lotta's Adventure ( 1929 ) Uncle Blue's New Boat ( 1942 ) and Peter and Lotta's Christmas ( 1947 ).

Elsa Beskow's aunts and uncle had different views when it came to parenting and education, and they started a school where the method of teaching was through games and enjoyment and with focus on understanding what they studied, instead of the strict school system at the time. Elsa was inspired by these views and the story of Doctor Clever Clogs, was created where she criticized the Swedish school system.

The Tale of the Little, Little Old Woman

In 1892, at the age of eighteen, Elsa Beskow continued her studies at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm, learning what she loved the most - drawing. Her drawings and writings was first published in 1894, in the very popular children's magazine, Jultomten (Father Christmas ) Her debut book, The Tale of the Little, Little Old Woman was released in 1897. In 1894, she started to work as a drawing-master at the Whitlockska Sam school in Stockholm and worked there until 1897.

It was at the University she met Nathaniel Beskow, (1865 – 1953), when she was a model for Nathaniel's paintings. They married in 1897. Nathaniel Beskow however, changed his course and returned to his interrupted theology studies and eventually became a doctor of theology. He also served as a school headmaster, writer, preacher, pacifist and social activist. He published collections of sermons and made significant contributions as a hymn writer.

Between the years 1899 – 1914, Elsa and Nathaniel Beskow had six sons. Elsa Beskow supported her growing family with her writing. She portrayed her life as “ Every year another book and every other year another boy”. Art, literature and music was very important in the Beskow's home and so was the cause of Swedish women's movement that was growing in strength at the time in Sweden. Both Elsa Beskow and her husband supported and was involved with the campaign for women's suffrage. Nathaniel Beskow was often engaged in leading discussions and became a noticeable negotiator.

Elsa Beskow's breakthrough came in 1901, with “Peter in Blueberry Land”. This was her first book to be translated. From then on, her picture books became immensely popular and have been translated into fifteen languages.They include; Arabic, Danish, Dutch, English, Faroese, Finnish, French, German, Icelandic, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Russian and Spanish.

She used her children and the nature as her inspiration. Her sons became model's for her child characters in her books and she created one picture book for each of her sons. The Beskow family lived in an old wooden mansion in the outskirt of Stockholm, surrounded with a huge,wild garden. Elsa Beskow would often sit in her garden to draw and let the wonderful flowers, plants and insects be her inspiration. She combined reality with fairy tales. Animals, children, berries, flowers, elves and goblins all came to life in her colorful and detailed illustrations.

Beskow's Sons

In 1922, Elsa and Nathaniel's youngest son, at the age of seven, died in a tragic accident whilst he was skating.

Their son Gunnar Beskow (1901 – 1991 ) was an acclaimed geologist, author, poet and cultural personality. He did groundbreaking work in Sweden for today’s stance on environmental and green issues. He was also chairman in The Swedish Authors Association 1948-1950.

Bo Viktor Beskow (1906 – 1989 ) studied at The Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm, Paris and in Rome.Versatile in his artistry; fresco-painting, mural-painting, stained-glass windows in churches around Sweden, and portraits painting, as well as murals at the UN headquarters in New York.

On June 30, 1953, Elsa Beskow died of cancer at the age of 79. Four months later on October 8, her husband, Nathaniel Beskow died.

Beatrix Potter of Scandinavia

Elsa Beskow's style inspired many artists and she was thought of as Beatrix Potter of Scandinavia. Unfortunately, she fell victim to criticism, mainly about the gender roles within her stories, as well as being considered as too old-fashioned. However, she dominated Swedish children's picture books for over 50 years and was awarded in 1952, the Nils Holgerson Plaque for her collection. In 1958, the Elsa Beskow Plaque was founded by the Swedish Library Association.

Elsa Beskow wrote and illustrated over forty books in her lifetime. She also illustrated songbooks and ABC books for Swedish schools. Her final book, The Red Bus and the Green Car” was published in 1952, the year before her passing. Elsa Beskow's picture books have been known and cherished for over a century. They are true classics and are steadily reprinted, as well as Elsa Beskow's wonderful calendars, with seasonal artwork from her books.

Hello everyone!

Some of you already know, but for all of you who does not know, I would like to tell you my exciting news. I'm in the process of publishing my very first children's book. Yes, my dream of being a published children's book author is almost fulfilled.

Unfortunately, I have been so involved in this that everything else have gotten neglected. My blogs, facebook, twitter, commenting, sharing, visiting, replying, friends, family, life, eating and everything in between. So I'm truly sorry for not being in touch as much as I should have, and some of you may have felt neglected. Please know it was never my intention. As soon as "Melvin, bad, bad kitten" will be published, I am then in desperate need of a few days of vacation, because this book publishing thing has drained all the energy out of me. However, afterwords I hope everything will settle down and you'll hear and see me around as usual.

How to Add Fiber and Moisture Into Your Pound Cake

One day my lovely niece invited me to her home for coffee. She had just baked a pound cake, and the wonderful smell met me as soon as I walked in through the door. Well, if the smell was wonderful, then the taste was simply heavenly. My oh my. . . So moist and delicious! I got rather surprised when she told me that this cake's main ingredient was shredded zucchini. What a pleasant surprise, knowing that by eating this pound cake, I was eating healthy too! Well, unless you eat half of the cake in one sitting, which I did, I simply could not resist.

Now I will share this recipe with the rest of you. I hope you'll enjoy this cake as much as I did.

Zucchini and Nut Cake

Recipe For Zucchini and Nut Cake

Ingredients:

3 large eggs
1 cup sugar
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for pan
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 cup (8 ounces) unsalted butter
2 1/4 cups of raw shredded zucchini
1 cup of shelled, unsalted and roasted pistachio nuts or almonds, coarsely chopped.
Confectioners' sugar (optional)

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Generously butter a 10-inch bundt or loaf pan. Sprinkle with flour, tapping out excess. Whisk together flour, salt, baking powder, vanilla and cinnamon in a medium bowl.
Melt butter in a saucepan, let cool.
Coarsely grate zucchini on the large holes of a box grater. Squeeze out as much liquid as possible.
Spread the pistachios or almonds in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet; toast until lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a plate to cool. Coarsely chop the nuts.
Using an electric mixer, beat egg and sugar on medium-high speed until pale and fluffy. Add flour mixture, and beat until just combined. Add the melted butter. Use a flexible spatula to fold in the zucchini and nuts. Spoon batter into prepared loaf pan.
Bake until loaf is golden brown and a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean, about 1 hour. Let cool on a wire rack 10 minutes before unfolding onto rack to cool completely. If you like you can sift confectioners' sugar over cake before serving.

By adding zucchini to your pound cake recipe, you will not only add plenty of fiber and vitamins, but also give the cake moisture. Zucchini is plain in its flavor and low in calories, and will make a great substitution in cakes. Since this vegetable is plain in flavor, it can be added to any flavored cake such as lemon, chocolate or coconut pound cake. To use zucchini in a pound cake recipe, coarsely grate the zucchini on the large holes of a box grater. Squeeze out as much liquid as possible, and then simply add 1 cup of squeezed, shredded zucchini to the recipe.

The one thing that makes fibromyalgia so hard to live with is the fact that you do not look sick. Fibromyalgia is also called the invisible disease, so even the people closest to you have a hard time to understand your situation. Someone who's suffering from fibromyalgia, try their best to give an appearance that nothing is wrong with them. They take extra care to look their best and when they meet people, they sound and look very cheerful, hiding the pain and exhaustion they really feel. However, masquerading as a normal person day after day is exhausting, so we often try to avoid socializing all together. This behavior usually after some time becomes a quality of life, where you get more and more isolated from family, friends, and finally the world.

Except for the physical torment, there is also the emotional pain of misunderstanding and/or lack of knowledge from family and friends. If someone in your family, a friend, co-worker or neighbor have fibromyalgia, you'll help them tremendously by taking the time to learn about this chronic, debilitating and invisible disease. It will help them not to feel so alone.

So for all of you who thinks fibro is just about pain, I just want to say, it is so much more. During the National day of Fibromyalgia Awareness Day, I hope that non-sufferers will take the opportunity to learn and understand better what it means to live with fibromyalgia, and how it affects our everyday lives. Only then you'll understand, there are painful tears behind that smile.

Healthy and Delicious Greek Pie

Healthy Greek Pie!

In between the phyllo of this Greek spinach and cheese pie, there is a scrumptious and mouthwatering filling of spinach, feta cheese, dill, some mint and olive oil, sprinkled with a healthy blend of vitamins, flavonoids and phytonutrients.

The Greek grandmothers make this pie with homemade dough, but I find that to be too time consuming for someone like me. So I make this with ready-made phyllo dough, which makes it so much easier and quicker.

SPINACH AND CHEESE PIE- Σπανακοτυρόπιτα (Greek)

Preheat oven to 175 degrees C (350 degrees F). Lightly oil a 30x40 cm. (12x15 inch) square baking pan.

Ingredients:

One pack of very thin filo pastry 450g. (1lbs)
Fresh spinach 1 Kg. (2 lbs) 1 Kg. (2 lbs) frozen, thawed.
1 large onion, finely diced
2 bunches green leeks, diced
One bunch of fresh dill, chopped (substitute 3 tbsp. dried.)
Fresh Mint, chopped 4 tbsp
Feta Cheese, crumbled 250 g (½ lb)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. The feta cheese is salted, so be careful not to add too much salt.
Olive oil 60 ml ( 1/4cup)
Olive oil for the pastry and pan 60ml (1/4 cup)
2eggs, lightly beaten
Oregano, 1 tbsp. Dried
Sesame, 3 tbsp.

Preparation:

Wash and simmer the fresh spinach for a few minutes. Drain and squeeze out excess water very well. If using frozen spinach, thaw completely and squeeze out excess water.
Heat oil in a deep saute pan. Saute the onions and green onions until tender. Add the spinach, dill, mint, oregano, salt and pepper. Mix until well combined. Saute for 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat. Add the slightly beaten eggs and the crumbled feta cheese. Mix lightly.
Using a pastry brush, lightly grease with a little olive oil the bottom and sides of the pan.
Unwrap the Phyllo.
Carefully remove the Phyllo roll from the plastic sleeve. Using a scissor or a sharp knife, cut the sheets in half to make two stacks of sheets. To prevent drying, cover one stacks with wax paper and a damp paper towel, while working with the other.

Prepare the pie:

Layer half the stack of phyllo on the bottom of the pan making sure to brush each sheet with olive oil. Add the spinach mixture in an even layer.

Continue to cover the spinach with the other layer of the phyllo, making sure to brush each sheet with olive oil.
Brush the top layer of phyllo with olive oil and score carefully the pie into squares. Sprinkle the sesame on top.

Bake in a preheated 175 degrees C, 350 degrees F oven until the pie turns a deep golden brown. Approximately 35-45 minutes of cooking time.

Serve it hot or cold as an appetizer or finger food. Or serve the pie as a meal with a salad. I always keep trays of uncooked pie in the freezer as a handy and quick appetizer, or side dish for guests. It freezes very well and heats beautifully.

Gripping and Deeply Profound

I like this author's causal, yet profound writing style very much. It is written with a fondness for the writing life. I think that the overall message from the author is that poetry is a form of freedom where boundaries are broken, and all the restrictions are removed.

Through Ms. Jami Pereira's words, she opens up a new door to poetry. This may frustrate over-methodical readers, and may not be suited for someone whose only interest is to analyze the aesthetic correctness in the poem. However, by doing that, they will miss the unique concreteness this author has to offer.

Reading this author's poetry, you'll soon understand, this is highly personal work. Within its 216 pages you'll find thought-provoking material that can only come from experience. Her words moved me many times to tears, as I became acquainted with such things as: abuse, cruelty, suffering, pain, hardship, sickness, but above all, hope and faith.

Beautiful eyes of mahogany,

muscles exploding in massive harmony.

Tall and handsome he stood. You would never guessed it,

but he was no good. Though we stood in matrimony.

Little did I know, his hatred would soon grow.

I had him on a pedestal. He did "no wrong."

What a fool I was.

He sang the same, tired song.

A decade passed, I grew too weary.

Time had taken its toll. My eyes, no longer teary.

A devoted slave, I had been.

He slapped my face, pulled out my hair.

Broke my ribs, in despair.

cracked my shin, shoved a twelve-inch blade beneath my chin.

Sirens, voices, I could hear them all.

"Blood is gushing from this woman, who is there to call?" Next of kin.

fourteen counts of assault and battery.

They finally took him away.

Eight years he vested for such a sin.

Unsuccessful attempts for my death,

he took everything from me.

But . . .he would never take my breath!

and she is now too weak and sick to continue with her writing.

I have worked in the petrochemical industry for 25 years. I have written poetry off and on all of my life, since my teens. However, this is my first attempt at writing books and I still have a lot to learn. I have two wonderful, grown children. I live with two Yorkshire terriers and a cat.

The thing I have noticed about most Bio's are, that they are boring. Someones professional history is boring. A lot of people don't care about someones education and how many awards they have won, unless they are writing a medical book or references. As far as my Bio, I choose to make it plain, simple and down to earth, because that is who I am. I do have a formal education, but it doesn't define who I am or what I have become nor does it define what is important to me. It doesn't define my morality, integrity, honesty, values, or my spirituality and those are the things that are important to me, and a part of whom I have become throughout my life.

My interests: Anything outdoors, and ever so often...having the opportunity to lay on the couch and watch a movie or take a nap. I enjoy simplicity. I also love writing, and planting in my yard or vegetable and flower garden(s). About my completed projects: Poetic Impressions on your heart, mind & soul vol.1, and Poetic Impressions on your heart, mind & soul, book 2. My very first poetry books. I love them, they are my heart made of personal thoughts and reflections. I believe they are relate-able, simple, and written in plain English, so that they are easily understood. I hope that you will enjoy them.

I am also working on a novella, that I hope will turn into a series, focusing on young adults or the adult that enjoys an adventurous and good, clean, fun read. The title of my novella is...The adventures of Karlie Mayfield.

My accomplishments: Hmm. . . though they may be few, and none of which may be related to my career, they are a reflection of who I am and whom I have become and I think the personal accomplishments are far more important than the ones focused on how much of the "spotlight" I have absorbed. For myself, I would have to say that being one of about 1200 women in the petrochemical industry as a Nationally certified professional craftswoman is a great accomplishment, not many women could have or would have tolerated or succeeded as I have, in this profession. When I started in the mid 80's there were approximately 400 craftswomen in the United States.

I believe those things that mean the most to you as a human being, are the accomplishments that truly define you personally. I do not believe that personal wealth or education has anything to do with that. Morality, integrity, personal growth, development, and spirituality have far more meaning to me.

Living with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - Am I cured?

Yesterday morning I woke up and felt absolutely great. Now don't get me wrong, it's not like I did not feel any pain. The pain was there, but just on the surface. I almost felt like I used to do, years ago, before I was struck with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. My mind was clear and I felt rested, something I have not felt in years. I was so happy, I was floating on air. I felt like such a burden had been lifted from my shoulders. I started to have these thoughts whirling around in my head; Am I cured? Perhaps this nightmare, I'm living night and day was now miraculous over?

Right after my morning coffee, I started do things, I had not done for so long. I baked bread, (no, I did not use a bread maker), I cleaned those hard to reach places, that's otherwise just too tiring to do by myself, I took a long walk with my dog, and I was actually running a few meters, just to remember how it felt like. I came back in, started to draw my illustrations, with no pain in my hands. I made a really nice dinner, because it was fun to cook again. I did all this in one day without laying down to rest in between. I felt like I had run into an old, dear friend, who I had not seen for years, and who had been dearly missed. Oh god, how good it felt to feel like the old me again.

Around two o'clock last night, I woke up, realizing the old Sannel was suddenly gone again, and I was back to my living nightmare. I can't help to wonder; what on earth did I do that actually made me feel like my old self yesterday? I wish I knew, because then I would do it again in a heartbeat.

One year ago today, on April 17th, 2012, I was urgently hospitalized for severe depression. Years of pain and exhaustion, going from one doctor to another, who did not believe me, or having me try out medication for about anything and everything, that in the end made me feel like a test-lab rat, finally made me lose all my will to go on living. By not eating, I figured my heart would not take it in the end, and then my everyday excruciating pain and exhaustion would end.

If it had not been for my husband at the time, and my best girlfriend, I do not think, I would be sitting here today. Because of their action, by taking me to the hospital where I was put under close surveillance and regularly fed, until I was strong enough - in my mind and body – I was then able to bounce back and
continue living my life again.

Being hit with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome has completely changed my life. From being a very active woman all my life, being in charge of myself, confident, self motivated and fun, I now feel useless, dependent and boring. I get really frustrated because I still feel like the old me but my body can't keep up. I get really tired and feel nobody really understands what a struggle it is to keep going. Life is not too much fun any more.

Not a second, a minute a day goes by, that I am not in pain. However, I have found ways to cope with most of the pain. But living in a permanent fog where I can't even think straight is affecting me and life in general. I am so tired all the time that I can't do much and I have stopped socializing more or less, due to widespread pain.

Looking back over the year, I'll admit, it has not been easy. I still suffer with excruciating pain and debilitating fatigue every single day and night. I still feel the depression creep up, and I have to fight it off through prayer, and my love for writing keeps my mind on track.

What has changed during this past year? Well, I'm not ready to give up. I love everything life has to offer. I was blessed with a life, and I'm so grateful waking up every morning to a new day. Yes, I admit, I really want the old me back, but until then, I will not give up on life that's so very precious.
