I attended the University of California at Santa Cruz and graduated before the campus was ten years old. There was no Department of Photography, and things were still a bit flexible, so I invented a major and graduated with a B.A. in Photography as an 'Independent Major'. As part of the process I had a little show his month, 52 years ago...
I still use the same camera since we were both manufactured in the same year.

Field of view is a foot or a bit less? The flower-stalk was ± vertical, but it makes a better photo rotated. Definitely a Lotus, in whatever bin the taxonomists have currently settled on. Yellow-orange lotus is customarily common-named Deerweed, at least in Arizona. Comments welcome, especially if someone local knows an actual ID!

In 1973 I was 20, and a student at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Wanting to do something productive, I asked Rita Bottoms, the Head of Special Collections for a Project. The University had been founded in 1965, and Rita thought photographs of the "Movers and Shakers" who were still active participants in the college, would be of value, and gave me a list to contact.
George Hitchcock was an American actor, poet, playwright, teacher, labor activist, publisher and painter, and created "Kayak" poetry magazine in 1964.
I photographed him at his home in the mountains of Santa Cruz and he told me that he had met Edward Weston once, and remembered how much energy and enthusiasm Weston had when he was making a photograph.
This photograph was made with Agfa ISS film, ASA 21, and a Rolleiflex camera with a 3.5 Xenar lens. I still use the same camera.
My wife and I are Staying Home due to the Covid-19 Virus, and last week I found a box of 50 rolls of processed film from 1971-1974, that I had mis-placed during our last move 10 years ago. This image was on one of the rolls, and as we are quarantined, I am re-scanning and remembering events, and friends from 45 years ago.

I met Tom in the 1970's when I was a student at UCSC. He had been a Wobbly and began playing the saw as a lumberjack. It is strange to know someone who has a life sized bronze statue of himself, placed on the main street of town.

Cool detail on a beach house in Pleasure Point, on E. Cliff Drive. I think the artisan had a cuttlefish eye in mind. On our morning walk, before the wind came up (much).
