Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandria gave birth to a colt. The baby's daddy is two time Horse of the Year Curlin. That's three Horse of the Year titles in the family! So this little colt has a lot to live up to, especially being born the same year as the foal to be born out Zenyatta, another Horse of the Year title holder.

Interview With Paul Attard

When did you become a trainer?

I obtained my trainer's license in the fall of 2002

Who was the first horse you trained in your own stable?

2) The first horse that I raced once I got my license was a 2 year old named Penthouse Prince. And he won his and my first start.

Do you have any horses that you think will make the Queen’s plate next year or ones to watch out for in the near future?

3) There are a couple of 2 year olds that I think will be ok next year.

It's too early for me to tell if they are Queen's Plate material.

You are going to Palm Meadows for the winter this year how many horses will you be taking down and is there a set goal or race that you are focusing for the horses and is it down in the US or back in Canada?

4) I am taking 15 horses to Palm Meadows this winter.

I will have some 2 year olds that didn't quite make the races this year in hopes of developing them for next year. I will also have a couple of older horses to race at Gulfstream.

Who has been the best horse you have trained so far?

5) I have been lucky to have trained several good horses. I guess right now Anne's Beauty would have to be on that list. She has won 3 stakes for us so far, with one of them being graded. Niigon's Touch is a very talented filly that won a stake and just missed in the Bison City. Vany's Forum was the first horse I claimed. He wasn't a stakes horse but he had a huge heart. He won alot of races for me and he was very fun to train.

Is there any goal that you have?

6) I think every trainer at Woodbine wants to win the Queen's Plate. That's a huge race to win. In 2001 when I was an assistant with my father, we won the Atto Mile. That was a great race to win, so I'd love to win that myself. I guess my main goal is to have a good, consistent career.

The talk around is that you’re the new and upcoming big trainer at Woodbine how does that make you feel?

7) I guess there has been some extra attention towards me this year. I think that's what happens when you have quality stock. I have been fortunate enough to have several allowance horses and a few stake horses this year. I'm taking it all in stride. This is a very humbling game and you can't get too high on yourself or you'll hit the ground very fast. I can only hope that next year is as good.

What is a normal day at the track like for your stable?

8) I have to start by saying that I have a great crew. I get to the barn in the morning and most of the guys are already there. They know they're jobs so that makes it easier on me. We all get together well and know how to have fun but the horses always come first.

What do you think about the Poly Track at Woodbine?

9) The polytrack is a relatively new concept in North America. It has only been in for a few years and I think that we all are still learning quite allot about it.

If there were something that you would change about Woodbine What would it be?

10) I think that Woodbine is a world-class facility that has the best purses in North America. The first year I started training, I was offered job training

in New York. I was told that in New York I could make it big. I responded to that person by say "Woodbine is my home and there is nowhere else I would rather train." I said that nine years ago and I still mean every word of it. There are many great tracks in the States that I would love to race at but Woodbine will always be home.
