"Saoirse Ronan cringes when she remembers the "vampy" look she went for while promoting The Lovely Bones.

The pretty 16-year-old actress has enjoyed immense success in Hollywood so far, having given outstanding performances in films such as Atonement, The Lovely Bones and Peter Weir’s latest movie The Way Back.

Saoirse loves fashion, although she regrets going for a seductive look during the promotion of The Lovely Bones in 2009. The Irish actress played lead character Susie Salmon in the film, and went for an extremely glamorous image for the movie’s premiere, displaying her slender figure in a slinky mini-dress.

“I did vamp it up there for a while, didn’t I?” she laughed.

The star now opts for a more natural, fresh-faced look, but at the time she couldn’t get enough of black kohl eyeliner. The teenager now looks back and regrets being so over-zealous with her application.

“I was going through a stage where I liked eye-liner and it became a bit ridiculous!” she told British newspaper The Times.

Co-star Ed Harris said: "She's really present, I felt really grounded with her".

Saoirse Ronan Cast As Leading Lady In 'Effie,' But Is The Role Too Adult?

In Hollywood, everything comes in threes. More often than not, that's referring to celebrity deaths and trilogies, but today it's about Saoirse Ronan, who is getting her third title role in just one year. First it was "Hanna," which cast Ronan as a 14-year-old Eastern European cold-blooded killing machine. Then it was opposite Alexis Bledel in "Violet and Daisy," which follows two teenage hitgirls named (duh!) Violet and Daisy who get sucked into some serious trouble.

To complete the hat trick, Production Weekly has announced via tweet that Ronan will be starring in the Emma Thompson- and Greg Wise-scripted flick "Effie," which would cast Ronan as -- you guessed it -- the title character Effie Gray. The film will follow Gray's disastrous marriage to John Ruskin, a Victorian art critic and poet, and focus largely on their sexual relationship (or lack thereof) and a love triangle that results from that. Sure, Ronan played a teenager who was raped (off camera) in "The Lovely Bones" and made some pretty big mistakes in "Atonement," but do we really need to point out that she's only 16?
She definitely isn't the first actress to push the age barrier in her roles in recent years. Dakota Fanning got plenty of flack for her rape scene in "Hounddog," and only this year Chloe Moretz was lambasted for killing dozens of bad guys and using the C-word in "Kick-Ass." And there have been way more examples over the years.

But two roles as a ruthless killer and now one that focuses on a Victorian marriage and sexual behaviors seems a bit excessive. Thompson told the Telegraph about the script: "I think you need to go into the past to examine sexual mores to get clues about our behavior now... The so-called sexual revolution was probably inevitable, but with many revolutions mistakes are made." The film will portray Gray's character in a positive light, but for the record Gray was 17 years old when she married Ruskin -- though, to be fair, she and Ruskin didn't once have sex during their nine years of marriage.

Ronan is a great actress and I'm not trying to argue that she shouldn't be cast in serious roles. Her performances over the past three years have continued to show off her great ability. It just seems a bit inappropriate that she should be cast in four such adult roles before she is legally an adult. At least there don't seem to be any doubts about casting her as a leading lady, which I'd say bodes well for the rest of her career.

Two years ago, Emma Thompson and husband Greg Wise announced that they had penned a script about Victorian art critic, social thinker and poet John Ruskin, who had a strange and ultimately disastrous marriage to a woman named Effie Gray. The marriage was never consummated (she claimed impotency; he, ahem, demonstrated his virility in court) and after it was annulled she married his protege and bore many children. Due to his stature in Victorian society and beyond, the love triangle became a memorable historical footnote, and thus the subject of the script, Effie.

The film had Carey Mulligan attached as recently as this past summer, with Emma Thompson and Greg Wise both slated for roles. Now there’s a report that puts the title role in the lap of Saoirse Ronan, instead.

Production Weekly said via tweet today,

Saoirse Ronan to play the title role in the Emma Thompson script “Effie” Orlando Bloom, Greg Wise, Imelda Staunton and Thompson co-star.

Last year Greg Wise was linked to the role of John Ruskin and Emma Thompson to the role of Effie’s confidante Lady Eastlake. I’d expect Orlando Bloom to be John Everett Millais, the painter Effie married after her first marriage was annulled.

When announcing the film Emma Thompson said the film would be a lens through which modern morality could be examined. She told the Telegraph,

I think you need to go into the past to examine sexual mores to get clues about our behaviour now…The so-called sexual revolution was probably inevitable, but with many revolutions mistakes are made.

Emma Thompson said this year that the wedding night of Effie and Ruskin will play a part (“We will show that night at the start, but it doesn’t play itself out until the very end.”) while Greg Wise said that Effie’s own letters are a large part of the film’s historical basis in fact, inasmuch as ‘fact’ can be determined.

We have tried to stick to what Effie wrote about the incident… but you never really know if Ruskin had set her up for it in some way. She had to go to the ecclesiastical court to get a divorce, so if nothing else you have to admire the strength of character of this girl."

"Oscar nominated Irish actress, Saoirse Ronan will depart for New York on Thursday, September 16th to prepare for her role in ‘Violet and Daisy’, a new feature film from ‘Precious’ scribe and director, Geoffrey Fletcher. The film, which starts shooting on September 27th will see Saoirse play the role of Daisy alongside James Gandolfini (The Sopranos), Danny Trejo (Machete) and Alexis Bledel (Sin City).

The film, written and directed by Geoffrey Fletcher, centres around Alexis Bledel’s Violet and Saoirse’s Daisy, two teenage assassins who are hired to kill a target. However said target turns out to be something neither girl expects.

The Magic Violet/Greenestreet Films’ feature is being produced Geoffrey Fletcher and Bonnie Timmermann (casting director Dangerous Minds, Black Hawk Down), with shooting to start on September 27th in and around New York. The executive producer on board is John Penotti (In the Bedroom) and Steve Kempf is the film’s co-producer.

SHE is a top Hollywood star but likes nothing more than spending time with her family and dog Sassy in her rural home.

Saoirse Ronan plays a teenage assassin in her upcoming movie 'Hanna' -- but she looked just like any other teenager last night as she arrived at a ceremony in Carlow town.

The 16-year-old, from Ardattin, Co Carlow, was presenting awards to deserving young people.

Saoirse, who was joined by her parents, Monica and Paul, arrived early at the town's new contemporary arts centre and theatre, Visual.

The actress, who was dressed casually in an 'I love New York' vest, black T-shirt, a light pink blazer and flat shoes, presented the Carlow Youth Awards.

Saoirse was particularly interested in the Guns 'n' Roses gig which angered fans at the O2 on Wednesday night and chatted about the concert outside Visual.

She also said she had just watched a screening of 'Hanna' -- her new spy thriller.

Saoirse plays a young girl who has been trained by her father to kill. She said she "really enjoyed" it and did two hours in the gym and two hours of martial arts in the run-up to the film.

"I wouldn't call it an action movie," she said.

"It's a movie that has a lot of action in it. It goes quite deep as to where Hanna comes from and what she's all about.

"To me, it doesn't seem like your typical action film or action hero.

"She's a particularly interesting character," added Saoirse.

The movie also stars Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett."

The Lovely Bones just opened in Singapore, so it makes sense that Irish star Saoirse Ronan is on the cover of that country’s Seventeen (March 2010).

Saoirse (pronounced Seer-sha), who is 15, is so pretty and fresh faced. Here are some excerpts from the interview:

On friends and fame: Most of them are pretty cool about it. I think my real friends are anyway. And they treat me in exactly the same way as they always have.

On her early reservations about doing the movie: I hadn’t read the book at that point, and when I heard what it was about, I talked about it with my mum and dad, and we questioned whether I should do it at all because it seemed so heavy.

On what changed her mind: Well, they sent over a few scenes for me to do, and my Dad put me on tape and sent it back. Then I read the script, and it was just incredible. It’s awful what happens to Susie - absolutely terrible - but the script, like the book, is beautiful and funny and actually it’s full of hope too. At the end you just can’t help but feel like you’ve been changed in some way.

On filming in New Zealand with director Peter Jackson: It’s the most beautiful country, and the people are so laid back and so welcoming. I loved it there and I felt right at home.

Keep watching this girl - I think she’s going to be the next Emma Watson.

After her celebrated performance in Atonement, 13-year-old Saoirse Ronan returns to play a murdered teen in Peter Jackson's the lovely bones

WHEN Peter Jackson (the Academy Award-winning director and producer of The Lord of the Rings trilogy) approached Saoirse Ronan and offered her the coveted role of Susie Salmon in The Lovely Bones, the young actress admits that her first instinct was to turn it down.

It’s easy to understand why. It is, after all, a challenging part for any young performer, even one as undeniably talented as Saoirse – an Oscar nominee for her remarkable performance in Atonement and a teenager who already boasts a CV that would be the envy of actors twice her age.

Based on Alice Sebold’s highly-acclaimed, best-selling novel, The Lovely Bones is an extraordinary, moving story of a murdered girl who watches over her family – and keeps track of the man who killed her – even from “heaven”.

Now 15, Saoirse was just 13 when filming started. What made her change her mind? “Well, they sent over a few scenes for me to do and my Dad put me on tape and sent it back and then I read the script and it was just incredible.

“It’s awful what happens to Susie – absolutely terrible but the script, like the book, is beautiful and funny and actually it’s full of hope, too. At the end, you just can’t help but feel like you’ve been changed in some way.

“I spoke to Peter and then I went over to meet him and he reassured me. He said: ‘Listen, we don’t want this to be a gory movie, we don’t want to shock people, we want to tell the story in the best possible way’. And that’s what they did. And I’m so glad I did it. It was an amazing experience.”

Although the story is set in the United States, most of Saoirse’s scenes were filmed in Jackson’s studio in Wellington, New Zealand, where he created the ‘heaven’ part of the film.

The Lovely Bones was one of the most eagerly-anticipated films of 2009 and Saoirse joined a stellar cast assembled by Jackson to bring his vision of the book to the big screen.

Rachel Weisz and Mark Wahlberg play Abigail and Jack Salmon, Susie’s devastated parents; Susan Sarandon plays Grandma Lynn who tries to hold together the shattered family; while Stanley Tucci (who was nominated in the Oscars for best supporting actor) plays George Harvey, the neighbour who lures Susie into a secret hideaway and then rapes and murders her as she is on her way home.

After Susie is murdered, she watches as the tragedy sends out shockwaves that affect the lives of her family and friends.

For Jackson, bringing Sebold’s magical, poignant story to the screen represented the kind of visual challenge that he clearly relishes.

For Saoirse, it meant that most of her ‘heaven’ sequences were acted out in front of a blue screen so that Jackson, a special effects master, could add on the appropriate imagery later.

“After Susie is murdered she is kind of in this ‘in-between place’ – in between heaven and earth. I think that’s where the magic happens, where Peter really gets to work.”

Some of the scenes required Saoirse to tackle high-wire work – a process that was equal parts enjoyable and physically tough.But among the most difficult scenes were, unsurprisingly, the sequence when her killer attacks Susie.

“For the most part, I can leave things behind at the end of the day,” she says. “But because this was such a deep subject, it was a little different. I think it’s natural because sometimes you would come home and think about it because you are living it every day on the set.

“I would think about all the young girls who have suffered this tragedy and those who have been murdered. There are these monsters out there and they are getting away with it and their families are put through misery. And sometimes I would get really upset because I was so close to Susie and I had connected with her, as you would with a character that you are playing.”

At the end of each day’s filming, Tucci did his best to make sure that the youngster was reassured. “You absolutely hate his character. And I hate him. I watched the scenes and I forgot it was the lovely, kind, generous Stanley who is playing him.”

Saoirse didn’t read Sebold’s book until earlier this year after she had finished filming. “I just felt that at the time I was too young to read it,” she explains. “And it was the same with Atonement. In fact, I still haven’t read that but I will.

“I loved the book The Lovely Bones. I thought it was incredible and to tell the story through this dead girl’s eyes is so powerful.” Saoirse has not yet met author Sebold but would dearly love to.

She has now worked with some of the biggest stars in Hollywood – including Keira Knightley (Atonement), Catherine Zeta-Jones (Death Defying Acts), Bill Murray (City of Ember) and Colin Farrell on Peter Weir’s The Way Back, which is due for release this year.

“I never get star-struck. I don’t get tongue-tied or forget my name or anything. But sometimes, I’ve these lovely moments where I just know how lucky I am.”

Saoirse Ronan starts shooting her new film

Shooting begins this week on Irish actress Saoirse Ronan's new film, the adventure thriller 'Hanna'.

'Hanna' tells the story of a teenage girl who has been trained as an assassin by her ex agent father (Eric Bana).

On a mission, and pursued by another agent (Cate Blanchett), the girl must confront the life which has been chosen for her.

Saoirse Ronan and 'Hanna's director, Joe Wright, previously worked together on 'Atonement'.

James Schamus, the CEO of Focus Features, the company making the film, said in a statement: "We're so pleased to reunite with Saoirse and Joe for 'Hanna' - Focus' biggest production yet.

"With Saoirse taking on such a demanding role opposite Cate and Eric, this movie will be not only breathlessly exciting but also emotionally affecting."

Saoirse Ronan can currently be seen in 'The Lovely Bones'.

Rachel McAdams is in talks to star in horror movie 'We Have Always Lived in the Castle'.

The 31-year-old actress is set to play the lead in the film, which is based on the 1962 novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson.

The book tells the tale of the Blackwood family, an eccentric group who live an isolated life following the death of family members from poisoning.

Also rumoured to be starring in the film is Oscar-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan, however, a director is not yet on board.

Rachel has previously played the lead in a horror movie, portraying Lisa Reisert in 2005's 'Red Eye'.

Last year was a breakthrough one for Rachel, who had starring roles in 'State of Play', 'The Time Traveler's Wife' and 'Sherlock Holmes'.

This year she stars in comedy movie 'Morning Glory' alongside Harrison Ford and Patrick Wilson, while in 2011 she is rumoured to be taking a role in Woody Allen's next project with Marion Cotillard and Owen Wilson.
