Good morning, and welcome to the Weekend Roundup. I'm busy downloading all of Amazon.com's free Christmas MP3s and figuring out the few things left on my Christmas shopping list.

This weekend, I'm attending a friend's Christmas Threw-Up Party, an annual girl-fest with too much food, wine and lots of cheer (plus a fun gift exchange). It's become a highlight of the season we all look forward to. Can't wait! Aside from that - it's the final gift purchases, Christmas cards and, of course, housecleaning. Ah, the glamorous life.

Tons going on in the area as we approach the holidays. Fear not - it's all listed below:

Tonight, catch Nicole Atkins and Black Sea at the Strand-Capitol in York.
Thursday is Salsa Night at Level 2, starting tonight, with free lessons from 7-9 p.m.
Mitrani of Harrisburg is hosting an open house tonight from 5-9 p.m. - Get some shopping down.
Zia's has one of its fab wine tasting events tonight.
Friday, stop into Legends between 5-7 p.m. to get a signed copy of the H.A.R.D. girls' calendar!
Hot Wing Jones are at HMAC Friday night.
Joanna Kirby heats up Suba tomorrow night.
Flinchy's has City Groove Band.
Grab the kids and head to The Shoppes at Susquehanna Fri and Sat for their Holiday Festival.
Celebrate Sinatra's birthday at Rillo's on Saturday night with his favorite dish, sausage and peppers, plus special "Frank" wine flights.
Saturday is the 12th Annual Toys for Tots event at Overtime Sports Bar (formerly Shakey's in Hershey).
It's Harrisburg History Day at Midtown Scholar on Saturday from 2-5 p.m.
Herbie's 4th Annual Xmas Extravaganza is at ABC's Abbey Bar Saturday evening.
Don't miss the live reindeer and Mrs. Santa at Fort Hunter on Saturday.
Root for UFC's BJ Penn at Arooga's Saturday night at 10 p.m. Or root for the other guy. Whatever. No cover - a billion TVs. $5 Mad Elf pints.

Open for Christmas

Wondering what bars and restaurants are open on Christmas Eve and Day in the greater Harrisburg area? Well, you've come to the right place.

As in recent years, you'll find there are a variety of options for eating and drinking on both nights.

Below is a round-up of some local taverns and eateries that are planning to have some holiday hours this year, and I'll continue to update as I know more. If you know of any additions, please e-mail me or add them in the comments. Happy Holidays!

The Cellar will be accepting reservations all day on Christmas Eve from 11 a.m. until 8:30 p.m.; Closed Christmas Day.
All Downtown After Dark properties - both Hardware Bars, Bourbon Street Saloon, Sam Bucca's, Sawyer's, Reflex and Egypt - are CLOSED on Christmas Eve. All open at 8 p.m. on Christmas Day.
ABC closes at 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve; closed Christmas Day.
Fenicci's in Hershey is open all day Christmas Eve, 11 a.m. to midnight; Bar opens Christmas Day at 4 p.m. with limited menu.
Molly Brannigans is closing at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve through Christmas Day. They are, however, serving breakfast to the homeless from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Christmas Eve morning. Stop by and volunteer to help.
All 3 Arooga's locations will close Christmas Eve at 6 p.m. (but the food service stops at 5 p.m.). They re-open on Christmas Day at 5 p.m. Food will be available until midnight; all well drinks are $4 and domestic drafts are $2 from 10 p.m. to midnight.
The Brick Haus always has the longest availability over the holiday. They're open 4:30 p.m. until 2 a.m. Christmas Eve (they may even open earlier) and from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Christmas Day.
At Flinchy's, the kitchen closes at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve, but the bar is open all night! Closed Christmas Day.
Raspberries at the Hilton Harrisburg is serving a holiday brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Adults are $30; seniors are $27; children 5-11 are $16. Call for reservations: 233-6784.
Dragonfly is closed Christmas Eve; Latin night events on Christmas night.
Taj Palace in downtown Harrisburg is open full hours both days - 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Garrason's Tavern hosts its 7th Annual Christmas Eve Party from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.; They reopen Christmas Day at 9 p.m. with $2 Miller Lite bottles and $5 bomb shots.
Hollywood Casino has the Luv Gods - no cover charge - starting at 8 p.m. on the Roof (the bar, not the real roof) on Christmas Day.

Good morning, and welcome to December! I am nominating 2009 for the fastest year ever.

Happy Turkey Day! I wish you all a safe, happy and well-fed holiday. I'll be daytripping to family in Pittsburgh, then back in town to relax, Christmas shop and check out the new club, Reflex (neé Eclipse).

If you're skipping the hassle and drama of cooking - or just looking for some supplemental dishes (made by someone else), read Sue Gleiter's article on where to go.

For those of you who aren't going home - or who would just rather go out for the big meal, be sure to check out local hotels for special Thanksgiving buffets. It's Beaujolais Day! Don't miss tasting events at the Hilton, local liquor stores, Hollywood Casino, Flinchy's and more. And be sure to read my column tomorrow for more Beaujolais-related events that go through the weekend. It's a wine-extravaganza.

Tonight, in fact, I'll be hitting up Flinchy's for its special Beaujolais Day menu - then tomorrow, anything goes (but probably a movie at home ...). Saturday, the fiance and I will finally start some pre-wedding preparations as we meet with our first potential reception venue. By night, we'll dine at the relatively new Final Cut Steakhouse at HCPN - can't wait. Sunday, we'll travel to meet friends for a day of football watching and eating.

This Friday, run - do not walk - to HMAC for The Brothers' Bash: A Night of Troegs Beer and Troegs Music. This can't-miss event features Pale Ale, Mad Elf and Dreamweaver Wheat on tap, plus a firkin of Hopback Amber Ale on the bar.
All music provided by bands featuring Troegs employees - Eli Charleston, Colebrook Road, Up Pops the Devil -- plus Starsan, the all-star supergroup built for a Battle of the Bands beer festival held at Stoudt's the last two years, features 10 Troegs employees. Starsan won Stoudt's Battle of the Bands both years!

I don't know what it is, but I've been swamped lately. This entire week included nary a social event (okay, I'm still going to watch Grey's tonight at my girlfriend's house), but instead has been wrought with responsibility and duty. I'm not complaining - but I am looking forward to spending the weekend on the couch with the dog. I may even treat myself to a movie - if you have a recommendation, leave it in the comments.
Around town, things are a bit more active. Here's the rundown:

Rillo's has a wine tasting dinner tonight - ahh, life's greatest things: pasta and vino.

I think it's safe to say that ABC always has the best-named bands. This Friday it's Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad.

More classical tastes can be found (or developed) at HMAC Friday night. Concertante hosts a "How to Listen" networking event with Harrisburg Regional Chamber and CREDC, leading up to their Saturday performance at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center.

Heading to the Bears game Friday? It's "Capital BlueCross Water Bottle Night" and "Hatfield Dollar Dog Night." I can't think of a better promo.

My favorite local party band, The Impact Band, is at Champions Friday night.

Christmas in Hershey kicks off Friday, as well. Activities/sights include Santa and his reindeer (real reindeer), Christmas Candy Lane, Hershey's Sweet Lights, National Christmas Tree Walk at Hershey Gardens and so much more.

On Saturday, start your Christmas shopping early by supporting local artists and getting your loved ones a truly unique gift. Visit the 3rd annual oddONES Holiday BIZARRE at the Historic Harrisburg Association building from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Hershey Story's latest exhibit, "Living the Vision" opens Saturday.

Saturday night, catch this one downstairs (Spy Club) at Dragonfly: Matt Ryan (Digital Elvis) and Chris Moody (Dead 50's) Unplugged.

Arooga's 15 and 39 both have the UFC Fight Night Doubleheader. No cover charge.

Sunday night is Wii Game Night at Stallions.

Sunday through Monday Chili's in Mechanicsburg is donating 10% of all receipts to Riley's Toys Foundation.

Tuesday - catch Jason Ricci & New Blood at the Maennerchor for Tuesday Bluesday. This show is fully open to the public - it's gonna rock.

Brr - and into the chilly holiday season we go! This weekend, I'm helping out at the MMA Pennsylvania Fighting Championships fight and then attending the wedding of one of my favorite people on Saturday. Sunday, it's freelance work and relaxing and hopefully some QT with the fiance before he departs for a week in the Ohio wilderness.
Still plenty to do this weekend and beyond as we gear up for the holidays. Here's the word:

Tonight, like every Thursday, is French Quarter Night at Confit French Bistro.

Glenda's Benefit Drag Show keeps things interesting at Stallions tonight.

Grinnin' Grizzly - the November brew - is on tap at ABC, making mouths happy. Their Rebel Yell Rye I.P.A. is also out at all locations.

Starting tonight and running through the next 3 weekends - Theatre Harrisburg presents Annie.

HYP hosts its First Friday Happy Hour at Susquehanna Art Museum tomorrow. $5 cover - a small price to pay for art + networking.

Hollis Brown with opener, Jump The Gun, rocks the house that is HMAC.

I REALLY want to get to my first IMAX movie this year. I'll ask the fiance to take me to see Disney's A Christmas Carol, which opens in 3-D at Whitaker Center's IMAX screen Friday.

Echoburn is hosting a reunion show at the Grotto Pub Friday night.

Richard III opens at Gamut Theatre Friday and runs through Nov. 21.

The lovely Joanna Kirby is performing from 5-8 p.m. tomorrow night for the half-off happy hour at 2wenty-Thre3, the bar the Crown Plaza hotel.

Saturday morning, pair up again with HYP for their Forster Street Clean-up, starting at 10.

The Junior League hosts their annual Harrisburg Bargain Box Rummage Sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Saturday night, the Humane Society kicks off its annual Fur Ball.

Scott's Grille - now closed

It is with a heavy heart that I write to confirm that Scott's Grille - true to various rumors, tweets and updates this weekend - has shut its doors for good.
My friends and I enjoyed Scott's for years - as had much of the Harrisburg area - for dinner, happy hour and late night dancing. I have fond memories of chef's tables, countless happy hours, Friday raw bar, Pepka, DJ Ray Rossi, DJ Scottie, Halloween parties, Strawberry-basil martinis - I could go on.
Instead, please enjoy a slideshow of some photos from my personal collection of Scott's Grille throughout the years. Scot G of MODE, no doubt has the most comprehensive photography collection from the years of Scott's - hopefully he'll be able to share those as well.

Brothers Tom and Rick Scott have opened Scott's Bar & Grille in the Pennsylvania Rural Electric Building, 212 Locust St., originally the site of Lombardo's at Locust Court.

Both have worked extensively in the restaurant industry and have run several kitchens for Host International, Marriott and Gilbert/Robertson (the latter of Houilhan's and Darryl's fame) but this is their venture together and their first restaurant.

Food is "American cafe" style with Italian flair; dinner entrees of pasta, seafood, chicken and meat range from $7.25 to $13.95 while lunch entrees are priced from $4.95 to $6.75. Appetizers, soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, desserts and beverages available at both meals.

Lunch is served 11: 30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; dinner from 4 to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. Saturday hours are 4 to 10 p.m. Happy hour with complementary food is 5 to 7 p.m. The lower dining room seats 100 at banquettes and tables; the upper dining room seats 50 to 60, and the bar seats 60.

Banquets, breakfast parties, business meetings, luncheons and group affairs can be accommodated. Telephone is 234-7599.

Holiday volunteer opportunity

The Salvation Army of Harrisburg is seeking volunteers for its annual Christmas Kettle Campaign.
Volunteers are needed to stand at the organization's iconic red kettles outside of 33 locations around the Harrisburg area to raise money for needy families this holiday season.
If you have time to give this season, e-mail or call (717-233-6755) the Salvation Army. Grab a few friends and ring a bell for charity. Churches, businesses, clubs, organizations and scouting troops are encouraged to schedule a group of volunteers for a day or more.

Another busy weekend is ahead of me - and I'm not even hitting any of the many Halloween Happenings this weekend. I've got the final of this season's bachelorette parties - we're choosing to dine at Garrason's and then hit up Hollywood Casino. I also have a book signing at The Hershey Lodge Saturday morning - stop out and say hello and pick up a copy of my Hershey travel guide - it'll make a great Christmas gift for the chocolate lover on your list.

Tonight stop into Houlihans for a chance to win tickets to the performance of the Wizard of Oz at Hershey Theatre, which starts its run on Tuesday.

Pink Party at Level 2 Oct. 21

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and you can do your part simply by visiting Level 2 for the PINK PARTY this Wednesday, Oct. 21. Doors open at 4 p.m.; event starts at 7 p.m.
Enjoy complimentary hors d'oeuvres from 7-9 p.m. and a complimentary glass of Nuvo. Cruise Control performs from 7-10 p.m. A silent auction will be held throughout the night.
Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in advance or at the door. Proceeds from ticket sales and the silent auction all go to benefit Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

... The Better Late than Never Edition.
With snow potentially in the forecast for this weekend, I'm planning to stick close to home. Unfortunately, my plans - which included the first night of Hersheypark in the Dark - were canceled due to inclement weather. I'm bunkering down to catch up on Tivo and maybe do some shopping tomorrow. However, don't let the weather deter you. Let's get right down to it.

It's not too late tonight to head to ABC for Puffer Fish, Red Sea Radio and The Sketties. NO COVER.
