I've made it through a very stressful busy time at work in one piece. To reward myself, I'm not working today. Before I head off to some mid-morning pampering, I want to share with you a few pics from a recent party out at "the farm" or the the vineyard where Tim works.

I don't really know why they call it "the farm" instead of "the vineyard"... working at a vineyard sounds much more sexy. Maybe it's because everyone out there has beautiful and fun-loving wives or girlfriends, so they don't need to romanticize it. (see what I did there) Or maybe calling it the farm is it's own form of romanticization... that is not a word, sorry, but hopefully you get what I mean. (I should warn you that I forgot my camera that night, so I had to make do with my iphone.)
Anyway, on the farm there is this great old tobacco barn. It looks like it could fall over at any minute. This set the scene for the joint birthday barbecue andMoonrunner concert. Tim and hipster Gary, one of the winemakers, both have August birthdays...a sous chef at the winery's restaurant plays in a band called Moonrunner that is always looking for gigs, and the rest of us wanted to send summer out in style. Thus the perfect storm of motivation for a farm party.

This is the tobacco barn at about 10 p.m. just as burgers went on the grill. It was a beautiful late August night so everyone else in the company had been working all day and evening, requiring dinner be served late.

While everyone ate, Jack ran around like a mad man.. I wish I had pictures of him watching the band, it was one of those moments when I wonder if he's a human trapped in a dogs body.

By about midnight MoonRunner started playing. The stage was an old flat-bed trailer and the stage lights were truck lights until the battery died. From there they used old back up shop lights. It was so much fun. The next few pictures are really dark, but hopefully you can see the moon shining on the band.

At about 1am a thick fog rolled in...and Autumn came with it. After that night, the indian heat of Summer was something we'd survived and could be looked forward to for next year. What seemes like very next day, the work of Harvest began and sweaters and scarves came out of storage. Hopefully I can get Tim to take me on a "pick" and we can show you a Missouri wine harvest.

Now, Kansas, that is another story.. Anyway, I think it's interesting to learn how each one approaches his or her work. While the details may be different, I think there is always something to be applied to my own creative work or personal development.

I'm introducing a new "series" or "segment" here on Sarah Drags Tim...Each week (hopefully) I'll interview an artist or creative professional living and working in the Midwest. If you are interested in being featured, feel free to email me or tell me about your work in the comment section (No Jokers)...

We'll start this experiment with my good friend and the designer of this blog...William Marchant. You may also recognize his work from this recent post. He's a great illustrator and graphic designer and he and his fiance are truly some of my favorite peeps. Billy, as I know him, has built a profitable one-man graphic design business in a short amount of time. Because of it's length and my crazy schedule this week, our interview will come in two parts... Ok, here we go, Part 1.

Sarah: Did you always know you wanted to do something creative for your career?

William Marchant: I pretty much always knew that I wanted to stay in a creative field. Ever since I was a little kid I was making things, drawing, and tinkering around on the computer. So when I got older, it was a natural progression to move into graphic design and illustration.

In college I went for my Psychology degree in order to keep my options open. But I also thought that gaining more understanding of human perception and how people react to things would help my art.

While working on that degree, I got a part-time job as a graphic designer for a communications company, which sort of directed me into my current career path. I not only enjoyed creating graphics and websites, but I was good at it and got better with every new project I did. Working there was a great learning experience. I not only developed my skills in graphic and web design, but learned what it took to run a small business...which would come to be very useful when I later ventured out on my own.

S: In my work, I've noticed a lot of people don't think that being an artist is a real job, have you ever met anyone like that? If so, does it affect you and how do you react.

WM: Oh yea, I run across that all the time. Even after five-plus years of doing this, I think that some family members and friends perceive me just sitting around all day on the couch watching TV; which is definitely not the case. There's an attitude that an "occupation" has a black and white definition: "You go somewhere for eight hours and get a paycheck bimonthly; if you don't have those two things, you are unemployed." I don't blame people for holding that opinion, although it gets on my nerves sometimes.

The other thing is that most people don't realize that art is everywhere. For instance, a simple lunch probably contains several artists' work. Someone probably spent weeks designing the soda can you hold, another designer created the packaging for your bag of chips, and another designed the logo on your napkin. People don't think about these things...not that they should, that's the nature of our business. But what they might also not know is that the label on that soda can was done by someone exactly like me, at a home studio in front of a computer screen. Now if that artist didn't have a "real job" as you claim, you probably wouldn't have bought that soda if it just had a simple white label with "Soda" written in black Times New Roman font.

The same goes for fine artists. Office buildings, for example, would be a lot less attractive places if it were not for the five oil paintings hanging in their lobbies. As you might be able to conclude, I wish that people were able to recognize these facts more often.

My reaction to people who hint that I don't have a "real job," is just to talk about what I do. Once I start talking about recent projects, they are shocked at my actual workload. It's funny because you can see their attitude change as they start asking more questions. Then I get the silent, understanding nod saying, "Hmm, I guess you really are making this work."

S: It seems like a bulk of your work is through "Looks Great" your graphic design business, and is very commercial. But you also are an artist and are working on other creative projects. Is that a hard thing to balance? How do you stay motivated?

WM: Most of the work I am getting right now is in the graphic design category. A lot of logos, websites, business cards, t-shirts, graphical mock-ups or renderings for marketing campaigns (which I unfortunately cannot display on my website due to legal issues with the brand names they are for). This is all stuff that pays the bills.

What really gets me going is illustration. I concentrate on illustration opposed to "fine artwork" because I aim to reach a broader audience than just gallery-goers. I truly appreciate the art scene and contribute works to galleries at least a few times a year. But I would greatly prefer to have my work distributed in forms such as magazines, which are viewed by a mainstream audience. I went through a change of focus a few years ago when I realized that I have something to say with my pictures, and I want to say it to everyone; not just art collectors. I don't mean that as a negative attitude towards art collectors, I just feel that within the art world, it is more important to make art simply for the sake of making art...the goal being to out do artists of the past. In the illustration world, the goal is to get across a message. That's what I love, telling a story with a picture in an interesting way. In fine art, there is a message as well, but it seems to always be extremely discrete. I have always thought that if you have something to say, just say it.

Balancing illustration, design, and also my comics is really not a problem for me. It all kind of flows together. I think I've gotten very good at jumping from one thing to another and back very quickly. You just have to learn how to change gears. It is kind of irritating when you are sketching something and then have to jump onto Photoshop and crank out a graphic of some sort. But I just take a deep breath and do it. Then, I go back to the sketch when I'm done.

Motivation comes in different forms. I don't like to lend myself to criticism, so in most projects, my motivation is to impress the client. That's the name and the promise of my website, Looks Great, "my work isn't done until you can say 'looks great!'" It's a little corny, but I do mean that. I get jobs mostly from referrals, so I can't allow a project to be sub-par for fear that it wouldn't lead to another project.

Other motivation, for projects that I do on the side which I won't necessarily get paid for, comes in waves. I get really inspired sometimes and draw up a storm. I get this itch to get ideas out of my head and onto a page (or computer screen). Other times, I get into "slumps" where I feel like drawing something, but don't have any fresh ideas. During those times I tend to move over to the graphic design and website side of things...there's always something to do.

S: Some of my favorite work by you (Crap for the Crapper, RockScratch Posters) all has a very distinctive look, how did you develop your style?

WM: Simple answer: By playing and making mistakes. I am largely self-taught, so I really just figure out styles that I like and then try to make them better. My elementary school art teacher Mrs. Pigeone always said that there were no mistakes in art. I've never forgotten that.

I've been drawing cartoon characters like the ones in CftC since I was a kid. I couldn't say where that style comes from...I guess its an amalgam of different comic strips, comic books, and cartoons that I liked growing up. My style/technique has just developed into what it is because of drawing all the time during school...I used to do some of my best work in the boring classes!

For the scratchboard stuff you see on RockScratch, that started as an exercise in my Illustration course at Mizzou. Our instructor challenged us to try scratchboard because it wasn't that well known of a medium. I didn't have the patience to use it as intended, with fine strokes and cross-hatching...so I started using it my own way. And people liked it so I kept doing it! My goal with that medium became simplicity; getting across the figures, objects, and scenes as simple as possible. I try to explore what makes an object come across as that object. To clarify that a bit, you can draw an apple with a thousand pencil marks...or just three simple marks in the right places. That's what I've always tried to do when working with the scratchboard knife.

Thanks Billy! We'll have more coming up next week.. stay tuned! PS: you can buy the Rock Scratch Posters here.

Girls and guys are different on this subject, so this is something that I hadn't thought of before... But my friend, William Marchant (and "Sarah Drags Tim" graphic designer) has the market cornered. He's started producing on-line content for just this purpose. Crap for the Crapper is a weekly installment that is designed to be just long enough to entertain you on your morning "break." (I just can't type it, sorry)

If you also spend time on your phone while doing your business, there are several stories to choose from. My favorite option, Hammer'd, is pulled directly from our college experience. It has a Tucker Max quality to it, but it's actually a true story. And it is written by the one and only Tim..my Tim. Check it out!

I'm sure he loves that I've shared the details of his morning routine on the internet, but he'll get over it. Hopefully... Hi Honey, I love you!

P.S: Still not sure the point of this blog...but starting to think that is ok.

See, its really difficult to post irregularly on a blog that is only two months old. I just can't keep up (that is sarcasm, just in case you weren't sure)

Actually, the truth is that I didn't mean to be gone this long. It's a busy time of year for Tim with grape harvest and because the guys pick at night, we are on opposite schedules most days. I've been feeling more like curling up on the couch to take advantage of the short amount of time that we are awake at the same time, and less like writing. Add to that a dash of lazy and the next thing you know, it's been three weeks since I've posted here.

There hasn't been much going on lately.. but I'll quickly bring you up to speed. Since we last spoke, I learned that Jack is afraid of hot air balloons (or maybe he just noticed the sky in general, I'm not sure)

But, I'm just not quite ready to let go of summer...

Here are some of my favorite things living online, and a few ways to hold onto sun-kissed days..

Have you heard of Spotify? I'm obsessed...It's like a magical version of itunes where you already own the music.

This is the time of year when my wardrobe gets a little snoozie, so I'm using SoWellDressed for inspiration in new mixes for old items. I borrowed stole the Aug. 16 look for the barn party Saturday night.. ps: featured looks are coed and vary in age, sort of rare in the fashion blog realm

I'm listening to this Amos Lee song over and over in my car soaking up as much sun as I can... without getting into an accident.

I'm watching some of the archive videos on this site...there is some inspiring business advice if that is the sort of thing that turns you on. I was surprised to see David is from St.Louis, good ol'Missouri boy, listening to him talk, it seems obvious, he has a very "St. Louis" way about him.

Tim's not a fan of tomatoes so while he's away picking grapes this week, I really want to try this... yum!

Hopefully you find something to bring a little delight to the start of your week.

Image borrowed from the Saint Louis Art Museum...go there, spend money. (One of the three paintings we saw last weekend..they measure 42 inches long when displayed together as Monet intended.)

Those of you that know me, (Tim's mom and my mom are the only people reading this..and they do) you know that I can be a little bit of a procrastinator. The fact that my "new habits" reform lasted two days is good evidence that I'm not the most disciplined person you'll meet. So, it fits perfectly that I would wait for the very last showing on the very last day of an exhibit I've been dying to see all summer. And I would make Tim go, too.

First, it's worth noting that last Saturday was the culmination of lots of work. We hosted our annual fundraiser for my "big-kid" job. As usual I made Tim help.. we (along with 20 or so other helpers) schlepped wine, beer, tables and all manor of party gear from 8am to about 11 that night. So, I had the brilliant idea that on Sunday, to celebrate our accomplishment, we would drive the two hours to Kansas City and hit the Nelson-Atkins Museum for the last day of the Monet Water Lilies exhibit.

Sunday morning we woke up and managed to make it in the car...that is me driving. Thank you Starbucks drive-thru, you made the trip possible. In Kansas City we met my parents for brunch at Grand St. Cafe. It was really good, you should go there next time you are hungry and in KC on a Sunday.

Don't we look tired? It's because we are. Amazingly we made it to the museum on time for the noon showing. Not surprisingly it was packed, apparently we aren't the only art lovers with a propensity for procrastination. Either way the art was beautiful. I don't have any pictures because they didn't allow them in the gallery, and I'm a rule follower.

I will say, I thought the exhibit was well done. Of course the paintings are beautiful and the scale is awe inspiring. But for me the best part was to think about all the work that it took to get them there. It's fascinating to think that the three panels haven't been together in 30 years...longer than I've been alive. I have to wonder what Monet would think if could see all the fuss made over his artwork over a hundred years later.

There is still a chance to see them live and in person this fall at the St. Louis Art Museum starting in October and after that in Cleveland..although I'm not sure when.

Tim was good sport, but he was ready to get to phase two of the day...baseball. It was Royals vs. Tigers and that means you can spend as long in the Hall of Fame as you want. It's not packed and you don't have to worry about much happening on the field. So, for $9 we hit up Kaufmann Stadium.

It’s likely that anyone interested in this book is already aware of and has an affinity for Norton, both as grape and a wine. This was certainly true in my case…sharing my life with a Missouri grape-grower, it would be more concerning if I didn’t know about the Norton. I began reading this book hoping to learn about the history of the grape and why the wine seems to live in relative obscurity.

In that regard it met my expectations, and answered all my questions. But, the story is more interesting and complex than I’d imagined. And there is another Norton that I didn’t expect to come to know, Dr. Daniel Norton. It was fascinating to see the circumstances that lead to the creation of Norton’s Virginia Seedling. Kliman’s style seemed to take me back in time and left me with a better understanding of the influence viticulture had on the early development of this country.

The same can be said for the history of Missouri. Having lived here my whole life, I was amazed at how little I knew about our wine history. Like Kliman, I’m struck by the lack of interest among most Missourians in the history of the state and the influence winemaking had here, not to mention that most wineries make no reference to this history.

The multiple narratives, some historic, others contemporary, make all the facts and dates interesting and relatable. Ultimately, I’m really glad Tim’s mom gave him this book (and I stole it to read first). Now, every time I have Norton, I feel a connection to the history of the grape, this country and the earth (as cheesy as it sounds). I have a new appreciation for the difficulty and complexity of the Norton; its heaviness and earthy quality makes sense to me because I grew up here, it seems to reflect the weather. And It’s not unlike the people you meet around here. I’ve never experienced that when tasting a wine, although I’ve pretended to.

So, I guess it’s obvious, I highly recommend it for wine lovers and Missourian alike…

Tim and I moved in together a little over a year ago. For our first place, we very prudently decided to live in a house that was WAY too big, with much too high a rent, for such a young and broke couple. When we first moved into said house, we needed more furniture. Tim's Dad was our resource. He's got an eye for cool stuff and bargain hunter...he's in the biz. Somewhere along the way I talked Tim and his Dad into giving me this really old, falling apart, singer sewing machine table.

For a year it sat in our house in this condition...molting, what I'm sure is lead paint, onto our floor.

About a month ago, Tim and I moved into an apartment much more appropriate for our budget and stage in life. As a result we had to get rid of a bunch of stuff. To Tim's disappointment, I couldn't let go of the old sewing machine table. We needed an entry way table, a thing Apartment Therapy calls a "landing strip" but Tim won't let me say, because he's a perv... Moving on, I had an idea to "restore" the sewing table.

So, I present to you the inaugural (and possibly only) Sarah Drags Tim "Before and After" (The half-dog you see is Jack...he barked at squirrels and feral cats while I worked)

After a couple-three hours of sanding the table looked better.. but I was a mess:
After a good hand-washing, and few coats of spray paint, and another good hand-washing... I give you: After!

Now we are real grown-ups with a place to put mail, keys, hats, sunnies...and store Jack's many toys. The table top is another find I stole from Tim's Dad... (Thanks Andy!)

Check it out...I'm so proud.

Tim has managed to use this space well and no longer loses his phone and/or keys. I am not as easily trained. I'm still asking Tim to call my phone every night becuase I've managed to loose it in 1,000 sq. ft.

I've been thinking a lot about habit building lately. Now that I've sorted through my insecurities related to writing this blog...I've got to get in the habit of posting here on a regular basis. This is proving harder than I thought.

FYI: If you are interested in reading a blog by someone who's well disciplined and has developed a lifetime of healthy habits, this is not the place for you. Try Zen Habits... is a good place to start. I aspire to be more like Leo.

Unfortunately, my reality involves a lot more sleeping-in and junk food than Leo's. But, last week I was watching this Marie Forleo video and she said that studies show it takes 66 days to build a habit. I don't know if that is true, and honestly I don't care.

That little statement gave me the idea to really focus on my intention for my life for the next 66 days (starting today, until the first week of October). I'll report back to you here, each day. If all goes well, I may have better habits by Halloween. Just in time to fall back into old routines for New Year's Resolutions.

My first effort in good-habit building is to read more...my goal is "a book a week." I have a bookshelf full of books I haven't read one word of. My goal is to slowly tackle my "to read" list...

The first book on the list is:

The Wild Vine: A Forgotten Grape and the Untold Story of American Wine by Todd Kilman

It was a gift for Tim from his Mom and Dad last Christmas. I've started the book, so it's my way easing into this ambitious "book a week" project. I'll be back next Monday with a short review of the book and info on what I'll read next week. You are welcome to read with me, or maybe start your own project.

This isn't my only new habit, but I'll introduce you to them slowly over the next week. Stay tuned...

I haven't posted here in over a week...I've wanted to, I have some good ideas and funny stories to share. But for some reason, I just kept procrastinating and making excuses for not doing it.

But then a few days ago, while procrastinating, I watched Brenè Brown's TED talk. It's fascinating and inspiring...you should watch it. I wanted to learn more, so I've been checking out posts and archives on her blog. A recent post really hit a chord with me... Click Here, go read it, come back and I'll get to my point :)

Seriously, go read it.

You came back, Yay! Ok, my point is...It's really scary to put yourself out there, on the internet, for all your friends and family to read (not to mention the people you've never met, or the mean girls from high school...who knows what they're saying about you)

As soon as I hit 'Publish' I feel this wave of insecurity and anxiety. So for me, vulnerability is...working on this blog, and it feels...like avoidance and fear. But the truth is, I care a lot about what I put here. But no else spends as much time with it...there isn't anyone out there judging every key stroke. And even if there is, I'm have a lot of fun sharing my word with you (all three of you). That is all that really matters.

So, I'm re-committing to this silly thing that is blogging, I'll never leave you alone for that long again. Hopefully you'll come back every now and then and see what's new.

Ok, therapy session over...unless of course you want to comment and tell me about times you've been afraid to put yourself 'out there'.

PS: If the post I linked to helps you..consider Brene Brown's new book The Gift of Imperfection. It's on my "to read" list.
