After six months of intentional silence from my health blog, I’ve been wrestling with a question that extends far beyond the A Gutsy Girl brand: How did we go from total connection to almost none?

The Great Disconnect

Remember when digital spaces felt genuinely social?

When blogs were messy, honest chronicles of real life rather than perfectly optimized content machines?

When you’d discover someone’s corner of the internet and feel like you were reading their diary—in the best possible way?

That authenticity didn’t just disappear. We traded it away.

The Algorithm Trap

Somewhere along the way, we stopped writing for humans and started writing for robots.

Google’s daily rule changes, social media’s virality demands, and the relentless pursuit of SEO optimization transformed authentic voices into content factories.

The mental gymnastics became exhausting: crafting headlines for search engines instead of human curiosity, timing posts for maximum algorithmic reach rather than when we actually had something meaningful to say.

The result? Marketing that feels like marketing.

Content that serves algorithms instead of audiences.

Connection replaced by conversion metrics.

What This Means for Modern Marketing

This shift has fundamentally changed how we build brands and engage customers:

We’ve optimized for discovery at the expense of depth.

Be visible is priority #1. And then, create something worth remembering.

We’ve prioritized frequency over quality.

The pressure to feed the content beast leaves little time for genuine value creation.

We’ve forgotten that people buy from people.

Behind every click is a human being seeking connection, understanding, or solutions to real problems.

The Path Back to Connection

My hope (and belief) is the brands that will thrive aren’t the ones that master the latest algorithm update—they’re the ones that remember why they started communicating in the first place.

This means:

Writing for your actual audience, not search engines

Sharing genuine insights, not just trending topics

Building relationships that transcend platform changes

Creating value that stands independent of viral moments

A Different Approach

What if we stopped chasing algorithmic approval and started optimizing for human connection instead?

What if we measured success not just in reach and engagement, but in genuine impact and authentic relationships?

What if we returned to the fundamental question: What brings value, and how can we share that meaningfully?

The tools have changed, but the core of effective marketing remains the same: real people connecting with other real people over shared challenges, solutions, and stories.

Maybe it’s time to remember that the best algorithm has always been authenticity.

This piece was inspired by my recent return to blogging after a six-month hiatus. You can read the full story on A Gutsy Girl about stepping back from the performance of content creation to rediscover genuine connection.

The dietary supplement industry is booming—but how big is the supplement industry, really?

As someone who has spent over a decade immersed in this world, I wanted to dig deeper into the numbers, growth factors, and why this space continues to capture my attention.

After years of running A Gutsy Girl, I recently shared that I’m stepping into a new chapter—seeking to bring my skills, experience, and passion to a team making an impact in CPG, health tech, or the supplement industry.

While I love CPG and health tech, I have a keen eye for supplements and a passion for the industry to accompany it.

Through A Gutsy Girl, I’ve tested and used hundreds of supplements—and even launched a private-label line, Gutbyo[me], which gave me firsthand insight into what it takes to bring a product to market.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about why I’m so interested in supplements; what intrigues me about the industry.

Why Supplements Captivate Me

Personal Experience: Supplements played a crucial role in my own health transformation journey

Educational Foundation: My training through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, complemented by years of independent research, provided me with specialized knowledge

Ingredient Fascination: I find genuine excitement in researching novel ingredients and their efficacy (as evidenced in content like my deep dive on Immunolin)

Business Complexity: The supplement industry represents a fascinating intersection of rigorous science, creative branding, and accessible education

With all of that being said, I dug more into the industry, how big it truly is, and how brands can stand out above the others.

How Big is the Supplement Industry

The numbers tell a compelling story about this industry’s trajectory:

As of March 3, 2025, Precendence Research stated that,

The global dietary supplements market size accounted for USD 203.42 billion in 2025 and is forecasted to hit around USD 402.20 billion by 2034, representing a CAGR of 7.87% from 2025 to 2034.

This number has drastically increased, according to Grand View Research, who states that,

The United States nutritional supplements market size was valued at USD 112.6 billion in 2024 and is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 4.9% from 2025 to 2030.

To put this into perspective, albeit dating myself for a moment, when I first started researching and using supplements in 2008, it was an estimated $4.8 billion industry.

In just this (relatively) short timespan, the dietary supplement industry has exploded.

Market Growth Drivers

The supplement industry’s expansion is fueled by twelve key factors:

Aging population

Convenience of online shopping

Rising awareness of gut health, the gut microbiome, and overall microbiome

Emphasis on preventative healthcare and controlling health outcomes

Consumer demand for natural alternatives to long-term prescription drugs and medications

Weight loss (namely after the market’s growth rates skyrocketed from GLP-1’s)

Growing demand for closing the nutritional deficiencies gaps

Sports nutrition supplements, and the fitness sector in general

Personalization accompanied by tech integration (along with increased medical and practitioner integration)

Mental health and stress support

Dietary supplement products for women’s health-specific conditions

Lingering impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, namely the immune system (‘Health is Wealth’ becoming a core value for many.)

Sources: HERE and HERE

Standing Out in the Rising Demand of Supplements

According to the FDA,

The dietary supplement market has as many as 100,000 different products available to consumers. Approximately 75% of Americans take a dietary supplement.

With so many products, and an estimated 4,000 brands selling supplements, how can new and upcoming brands succeed?

Here are 6 things to consider:

1]. Design Excellence and User Experience

We’ve seen it time and again with all product-based industries, but those with the best design and user experience tend to see steady growth.

I witnessed this evolution with:

Poppi

Angie’s Kettle Corn > Angie’s BOOMCHICKAPOP

Nutiva

Elmhurst 1925

Olipop

HUM Nutrition

Yes, the product has to work. And there has to be proven science behind it, along with educational resources to back it up.

But at the end of the day, a key factor in trial is how the product looks on the shelf and/or what the user experience is like via the website.

The most successful brands invest equally in product development and consumer touchpoint design.

2] Personalization

Consumers are no longer interested in a one-size fits all when they have been educated to understand that their genetic makeup and circumstances are not one size.

Companies like Viome are offering gut microbiome kits which then lead to supplement suggestions based on one’s unique gut microbiome.

NBX Wellness delivers practitioners the information they need to deliver precise supplement recommendations based on each patient’s genetic makeup.

And many offer customized online quizzes to help determine the appropriate supplement use.

3] “Clean” Ingredients + Labels

In recent years, consumers have become much more privy to reading labels and deciphering any dietary ingredient contained on it.

Some of the top terms they are cautiously watching for include:

Fillers

Additives

Artificial sweeteners

Allergens

“Free” from (gluten, dairy, corn, soy, sugar, etc.)

There has also been a significant increase in questions regarding:

Any clinical trials and research reports information

Good manufacturing practices

Quality assurance

Heavy metals testing

Transparency around research, sourcing, and efficacy is critical — especially since the FDA does NOT have the authority to approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness, or to approve their labeling, before the supplements are sold to the public. (source)

4] Highly Educational Marketing

Since user experience is important, and many consumers are now seeking information via the brand’s website, educational marketing is key.

Translating complex science into accessible understanding represents one of the industry’s greatest communication challenges—and opportunities.

From a personal standpoint, I think this might be my absolute favorite piece of the supplement industry.

Science is challenging for most to understand, and one of my greatest strengths is taking complex information then transforming it into digestible bits-and-pieces. I’ve done this for over 15 years now.

This can be done through blog posts, comprehensive video libraries, social media (like Instagram carousels), other visual explainer content, podcasts, webinars, and quizzes.

The science has to be simplified so the average consumer understands what they are taking and why.

5] Authentic Storytelling

A good story, whether it’s about the founder, ingredients, company mission, etc., is crucial.

Vitamin C and Vitamin D are about as commonplace as they come.

But (while I don’t personally use it), the way Emergen-C introduced the vitamin proved very successful. The company started in 1978, was acquired by Pfizer in 2012, entered the joint venture with GSK in 2019, and is now owned by Haleon (since 2022).

And how about SEED and how they have elevated probiotics with their impeccable storytelling?

Or Thorne with their story of unwavering quality commitment?

Finally, Nordic Naturals has spent quite a bit of time, energy, and sources on their mission.

No matter what the focus, the story is important.

6] Omnichannel Presence

The supplements gaining the largest market share are typically those with omnichannel presence.

They are doing all of or a combination of the following:

Direct-to-consumer platforms

Retail sales (health food stores and many are even at convenience stores these days)

Practitioner recommendations and partnerships

Online influencer collaborations, affiliate programs, and other like-minded brand collaborations

Content-driven SEO strategies

Email marketing

Mobile apps (customer retention and subscription boosts)

Print campaigns; traditional media

Amazon

Tradeshows and events

Niche Down; The Future Demands Clarity

While many supplement companies target specific niches, what’s most crucial is clarity in brand identity and product purpose:

What is the brand/supplement trying to convey?

Which specific supplement is solving which specific problem?

Who is the brand/product targeting, and what language will they relate to the most? (i.e. pregnant women and Olympic athletes are not likely to be the same)

Where are the most likely to find the supplement?

At what point of their shopping experience are they ready to purchase?

My Value Proposition

The supplement industry is no longer just about capsules and powders—it’s where science, storytelling, design, and personalized wellness intersect.

For me, it’s not just a professional interest—it’s personal.

My extensive experience spans the consumer perspective, content creation, brand development, and product research + insight.

I bring a unique combination of industry knowledge, scientific understanding, and communication expertise that enables me to:

Translate complex scientific concepts into compelling consumer messaging

Identify emerging market opportunities based on consumer needs

Develop distinctive brand positioning in crowded categories

Create educational content that drives engagement and loyalty

From my own healing journey to years of brand-building through A Gutsy Girl, I’ve seen what works, what doesn’t, and what consumers are really asking for.

Reflection and moving forward are two of my greatest strengths.

On this final day of 2024, my sole intention is to be fully present with both, together, in this moment.

Reflection

I’ve seen the highlight reels from hundreds of people during this past month.

I was not one of them.

Instead, I brought a different perspective. Though it’s definitely not my usual positive, it seemed to resonate (currently with over 2,000 people).

I did not make the progress, from a professional standpoint, that I had hoped.

Instead of the life-giving and meaningful impact I’m constantly striving for, I had far more days that left me with….this is not where I’m supposed to be.

It would be easy to stay here, in the doldrums of reflection, but it’s not for me.

Instead, through reflection, I have been able to see all the light that is starting to shine through.

And I believe, whole-heartedly, that this is where the real lessons are.

This is how we grow. And this is how we move forward after deep reflection.

By the way, I practiced deep reflection in 2024 via the following methods:

Journaling

Family time in Roatan, Honduras (April)

Walking the lake (summer months)

Ayurveda course through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (began in October – still going through it)

Quiet time at Ten Thousand Waves Spa in Santa Fe, New Mexico (November)

Moving Forward

Here are 21 things I know for sure after spending time in the deep reflection:

I no longer subscribe to hustle culture—less is more.

Exhaustion is real; my body reminds me daily (cortisol and DHEA don’t produce themselves anymore).

No amount of money is worth the toll of chronic stress.

Space equals freedom, and I value it deeply.

True authenticity matters, but algorithms don’t care—both truths coexist.

Exploration fuels my growth and joy.

Time with my children is irreplaceable; moments missed can’t be regained.

If I don’t love the process, I can’t achieve the outcome.

Though I’m Type A, I now choose calm over chaos.

I didn’t come this far to only come this far.

Anything—including people—can be toxic.

True needs often differ from perceived wants; clarity is key.

If someone’s opinion on a topic doesn’t matter to me, neither does their opinion of me.

Reflection is essential for growth; but dwelling on the past is a recipe for disaster.

Thoughts can be catalysts for action or anchors for fear; choose wisely.

There is only one way out…and that is through.

I will never have today back; how am I making it count?

Consistency always trumps intensity.

Progress is never linear, and that’s where growth happens.

Silence isn’t empty—it’s full of answers.

Letting go of what no longer serves me makes space for what truly does.

2025: Professional

Sell Thyme on Main

Maintain A Gutsy Girl

2025: Personal

Explore

Begin (and finish?) writing my book

Bible in a Year

Dedicate time to embracing and navigating each child’s unique challenges.

Document a year of inspiring thoughts and quotes.

Read at least 12 books on Audible.

Finish my 50 before 50 list.

Take 2 solo trips (✓ btw – these have already been booked and planned!)

New Year’s Eve 2024

After all the reflecting and knowing exactly what I want for 2025, going out for New Year’s Eve didn’t seem to align.

Tonight, I’ll create a list inspired by these reflections—things that no longer serve me. I’ll acknowledge them with gratitude for the role they played in my journey, shaping who I am today, for better or worse.

Then, I’ll release them by tossing them into the fire, letting them go with a final farewell.

Happy New Year to you!

One of the hardest, but also most rewarding, things I’ve done in my professional career is navigating an online business.

An Experiment

I did a little experiment.

For about an entire week, all I focused on was how I was spending my time.

Actually, it reminded me a lot of the process I teach with my gut healing journal – meticulously tracking in all the right ways to identify more about what causes the drain.

I wrote down my daily activities – tasks I had to complete for the business and projects I was working on.

Then, I wrote how long it took me to complete each of them, and finally I wrote out how those tasks made me feel.

Finally, after the week was over, I wrote more on the impact the week made.

What were the things that both delighted me and moved the needle for the business?

Here’s what I found:

I waste a lot of time.

From my list, seemingly 100 new ‘to do’ items were created.

I spend a lot of time on the podcast.

The needle was moving, but not necessarily due to any of the first three.

These realizations lead to many things, but maybe more so than anything else, they lead to action and decisions for pivoting A Gutsy Girl.

Navigating an Online Business

Since the very first days of owning A Gutsy Girl the comments from friends, family members, and acquaintances have always run rampant around the idea that…

all I do all day is “play” on the Internet.

I’m not calling any one person out, and I’m not even saying this has been a daily occurrence, but I can’t count the number of times variations of those simple words have been shared with me.

And, as an online creator and owner of an online business for over a decade now, I can tell you with full conviction that any way those words are spun are simply flawed.

I can also say that navigating an online business has been, by far, the hardest “job” I’ve ever done.

By 2026

While I love what I have created with and for A Gutsy Girl, I will also now announce that this shift has been a long time coming.

By 2026, I have the intentions of selling A Gutsy Girl.

Putting this out into the universe and online makes it feel all too real, but it also has me confident for how and where I’m spending my work hours on the business.

In 2024

Most years, I start focusing on the subsequent year for all business activity sometime mid-December.

But not this year.

This year, because I’m navigating an online business through change, it has already begun.

There are 5 main areas for A Gutsy Girl that we are going to bring to a whole new level.

And these 5 areas were determined by carefully reviewing both numbers and the impact on women with IBS and/or IBD who have provided positive feedback.

A Gutsy Girl . com – the website, namely catering even more (specifically) to women in their 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s who are stuck with bloating and gaining unwanted weight because of it

The supplement line at guthealingsupplements.com

The 21-Day Quick Gut Detox (our main digital course)

The gut healing journal

My signature book, A Gutsy Girl’s Bible: a 21-day approach to healing the gut

Online Business: the lonely road

When I worked in Corporate America, it never felt lonely because there was always a co-worker to bounce ideas (successes and complaints!) off of.

On any given day, I could look sideways and see at least 5 other people who were in my (seemingly) exact same shoes.

But out here, growing an online business and creating something from nothing (literally did this when I launched the brand in 2012) is oftentimes isolating and lonely.

And this is why I chose to write this all out here, on my personal website vs. the business website.

It serves a twofold purpose:

A great place to establish accountability

An invitation for other online entrepreneurs to get this same sense of “community”

I’m looking forward to even more growth, sharing the journey, and ultimately selling A Gutsy Girl.

Because, you know….as an online entrepreneur it’s about so much more than merely “playing all day on the Internet.”

Just me —

Sarah Kay Hoffman
