Interior: Calming Naturals

Beautiful neutrals and naturals, rough around the edges.

Though pristine, new surfaces and freshly painted walls may always be appreciated, perhaps the most comforting on the senses are surfaces that show life… surfaces that tell a story of the original maker of the piece and those who enjoy it, not only now, but yesterday, today and tomorrow. Like the well walked upon wood floor in the first image, or the drippy, unevenly toned dishes in the second… the mismatched, accumulated vintage chairs in the dining room, or the speckled counter top in the kitchen…

And then, of course, there is that beautiful space in the last—where nothing is too perfect and calls for many visits and afternoon tea within the confines of stone, wrapped around the room like a favorite blanket you can always count on; a place to relax and unwind in. All in all, perhaps the feeling of comfort is thanks the many layers of neutrals, the bits of natural sprinkled here and there, or the fact that everything is just a little bit rough around the edges…

A beautiful location house in the UK.

I believe that I have always admired architecture of the world. What is standard to building a home in one country, is never done in another… what are strict guidelines for designing staircases in one country are not even considered important in another country. The differences are quite interesting. And, having grown up in a family that is involved in the building and renovation of homes and commercial buildings, I have always been fascinated by the many details and guidelines that go into both creating and preserving structures…

And one amazing feature that instant caught my attention within this home are the organic wooden beams within the kitchen area. Completely exposed and left as natural as can be, and in perfect contrast are the pristine white cabinetry that offers main storage areas. What strikes you most about this location home?

Pedro García: Spring/Summer 2012.

Having never bought Spanish shoes before, this week, I ventured to a new-to-me shop within my favorite area of the city, filled with only Spanish designed and made shoes. Espadrilles, sky high heels with tassels, the most elegant athletic shoes in cream, simple leather sandals with just enough detail, perfect for the Summer weekends. There were too many beautiful styles. And so, my shopping partner and I left with a few bags of beautiful shoes… I, with a new pair of buttery suede wedges, and she, athletic shoes, comfortable and sandals and gorgeous heels. And at that point I knew it—I have completely fallen for Spanish shoes…

Collaboration: Reed Krakoff x Garance Doré

A journey of handbags.

I believe Reed Krakoff's beautiful handbags have been calling my name since I first laid eyes on them a short while back. Since, I have yet to forget the impeccable design and construction. Not only are they beautifully crafted but I also enjoy how limited the branding is—in fact, I am not sure where the branding lies on or within the bag, and I love that. I am instantly sold, which brings me to this: "A unique visual and sonic collaboration between Reed Krakoff and Garance Doré... for this project she took shots of her favorite boxer bag against the backdrops of London, Paris, Milan, Marrakech and other locations near and far"…

Exhibit at Toronto’s Contact Photography Festival and NordArt 2012 in Germany.

Perhaps it is in all gladness of warmer weather returning, in combination with recent talk and appreciation of the water, but I could stare at local talent, Melissa Mercier's photography all day. Her work is just astounding—enjoy a look above and below (no pun intended).

"Irrational Fear of Confined Spaces" is a study of claustrophobia in particular by local talent, photographer Melissa Mercier. Though not diagnosed with claustrophobia, she imagines the feeling of being trapped to be the worst, and states: "I'm so attracted to spaciousness, that I actually chose the space itself to be the subject of these photographs." At first glance some of the works look as though they were captured underwater, but in fact they were taken from above, allowing the submerged and protruding elements of the natural setting work with the lake's surface, as if to breathe or suffocate whether above or below. The airy nature of this beautiful body of work is in fact her remedy to the feeling of being cornered, and is wonderfully executed.

02 Beipiatti's, handmade ceramics: This Italian company creates durable, functional works of art, for living, crafted from earthenware, hand painted and glazed with non-toxic glazes. Library: A Favorite Book

Lost in a great book.

“There are books so alive that you’re always afraid that while you weren’t reading, the book has gone and changed, has shifted like a river; while you went on living, it went on living too.” —Marina Tsvetaeva

Do you ever get so lost in a book, and no matter how many times you may read it, it stays with you? It may take you far, far away, through tunnels and up stone pathways, along rivers and windings roads. It may take you centuries back, to moments and sights that one can only live within words and leading…

And perhaps most fascinating of all it to read a book, and then three, five, ten years later read it again. By reading it yet again, one may glean an entirely new lesson, or see something that was not seen years ago. It is amazing how that works… the beauty of being a part of a story. Is there a book in which you would like to read again? Perhaps for the connection within your own life, or perhaps purely for its storyline?

One of my favorites to read again and again is The Blue Castle by Lucy Maud Montgomery. I believe I first read it in my early teens, but since, it is one that I go back to from time to time—one that I can never forget. One that has left a wonderful, lasting impression.

Escape: Walled Gardens

Surrounded by garden and sunlight.

I am often fascinated by the way in which those who have apartments, townhomes, and lofts create beautiful garden living. Considering that there are so many possibilities for plants to be grown indoors, it is nice to be able to take advantage of both indoor spaces and out, with trailing or potted plants, and planters outside windows and on quaint decks. And beautiful hidden outdoors spaces such as this just call for enjoyment—breakfast in robes and slippers, an afternoon nap on a Summer day, a dinner party with friends, with the doors wide open. Such a fresh and lively spot, and so nice to come home to, and completely private from the world…

Style: In A Feminine Light

Pretty ensembles for ladylike looks.

There are some pieces in my closet that will always remain there, I believe. No matter how I may age, no matter how my style may alter a little, they will always be there. Maybe it is due to sentimental value—the memories attached with the pieces that hang there that come to mind each time I open the doors—or maybe it is because they are far too pretty they are impossible to give away.

It always comes down to the prettiest pieces—feminine dresses usually. And the very last picture within this post reminded me of a particular favorite dress that was a graduation gift, worn only once, but its memory will last forever… do you have some treasured pieces like these that you cannot part with?

Shop: Chanel

Chanel's bright and lovely seasonal shop, Côte d'Azur.

Near the end of April, located at La Mistralée Hotel, a beautiful 19th century manor house located just a couple of minutes from The Fox and the Old Port of Saint-Tropez, lies an elegant and bright seasonal boutique, known as the Chanel Ephemeral boutique. This is, in fact, the second Summer that Chanel has opened this lovely spot, open for visitors to pop in for a shop from April until October…

The look and feel of this boutique is decidedly contemporary, yet very luxurious and fresh, with notes of what we recognize and know as Chanel seen on the exterior especially, complete with a pretty garden and swimming pool, as you see. During this temporary boutique, Chanel features a collection entitled: "Paris-Bombay", the Spring/Summer 2012 collection, with the addition of their beautiful accessories as well. The collection is shown both indoors and out, with a wonderful juxtaposition of opulence and bold modernity. Quite fabulous, don't you agree? Are you a fan of temporary boutiques, such as this one?

Welcome, May

An open, new month before us.

This morning, I awoke a little earlier than usual mornings, meaning specifically, that my alarm did not wake me up or the sound of coffee, coffee, coffee. It was the soft sunshing making its way through my windows that did! This is certainly a far more lovely way to awake up and start the day… and so, we welcome May! And with May, we are glad to see an open schedule and days to be had, flowers in bloom, and greenery filling in, refreshed and vibrant…

And how fun it is to see several cotton-tailed bunnies, each and every day now, come to explore the yard, nibble here and there, running to and fro, through the courtyard, up the back, down the sides—it is so cute. These little sweet things remind us of the renewal of life, and the beautiful story that unfolds as the seasons turn. We must remember to catch glimpses of nature and life, for with busy schedules, we can often be swept up in the to-do's and miss the beautiful nature around us in the to-see's. This is something I am very guilty of. I believe it was yesterday, when I saw driving along, my mind filled with the inevitable to-do's, then spotting a mother goose, with her darling baby gosling on the side of the road, that made me pause for a second and just stop and smile; smile because of life; smile because of love and care and growth; smile because in all of this, it is Spring…

A trip to Hermès, for an inside look.

I was most fascinated when I came across Shini's (of Park & Cube) pictures from her recent trip to the Hermès Atelier Sacs —with a look at some of the work, behind the scenes, where the magic happens within the production department. Following her fascination, she has snapped some wonderful photographs that take us through phases of the process of production, and were some might argue, is the heart of the company: the skills and dedication to the finest of craftsmanship; craftsmanship that Hermès is so well known for…

Additionally interesting: in celebration of their 175th year and the brand’s unique relationship with leather, Hermès plans to host a public exhibition—starting May 8th to the 27th, (at 6 Burlington Gardens) in which some of the artisans will be showcase the creation of some of the bags. Wouldn't that be amazing to see?

01 Apartment F: Located in Bordeaux, this beautiful interior project was recently completed by architect Antonio Rico. The first space certainly creates quite an impression—one of grandeur, lightness and spaciousness. And as one moves through the home, we see a combination of minimalism and modernity with ornate details. Of all of the spaces, I believe the kitchen is quite unusual and beautiful, don't you agree?

From the architect himself, some wonderful details about the project:

"The design and rehabilitation of this interior has been a big and beautifull challenge. This takes place on the 1rst and 2nd floor of an XVIII century historical building in Bordeaux. All moldings, decorative wood pannels, floors, the main cristal lustre, etc are original and have been restaured very carefully. The decorations of the main living room have been designed by the french architect Victor Louis in arround 1760... My intervention has been total: structures, technic, restaurations, stairs, kitchen, bathrooms and decoration.. respecting the essential dialogue between historic and contemporary architecture, offering the must and highest level in this 200m² appartement."

A wonderful collection brought to life by Colombians Andrea Vargas Dieppa and Elisa Restrepo. Completely androgynous, yet elegant and sophisticated, the collection was originally inspired by a classic gentleman's style, and as they say: "The shoe is the quintessential grown up sneaker: beautiful and simple enough for the chic and fashion-minded, yet comfortable and durable enough for their contemporary urban lifestyle. This week's discoveries and links, starting with:

01 Lolita Jaca, St.Bart's: Their Spring/Summer 2012 collection is full of feminine details and cheerful prints, evoking a sense of worldly travel and adventure. In fact, The Orient and the Art Deco movement were the main inspirations for the collection. The Kimono remains the emblematic piece of the collection (as we see mid-way down) but the other pieces are arguably just as desirable and lovely.

02 Fidrio, Netherlands: Beautiful glassware, both large and small, has always been on my personal list of must-haves within a home—particularly rare and handmade glassware. I recently came across some pieces by Fidrio while purchasing flowers from my favorite local flower shop, and couldn't forget their designs. Here, we see just a sampling of their collection. The glass pieces are traditionally blown into a mould made of wood, resulting in thick, quality pieces of glass that will last a lifetime.

These gorgeous, limited edition, leather bound book clutches and bags offer a beautiful sense of a story well read… its pages and corners turned, many a times, bringing joy and tears to the reader—an escape from the everyday world, and into the world of the storyteller.

Stories of imagination, with titles such as "Moon" and "Fairy" and "Flowers", can hold your daily necessities and come alongside you, as quite a handy accessory.
