There’s something extra special about photographing a family when you’ve known their mama since kindergarten.

We photographed their session in the Livermore hills on one of those beautiful fall evenings when everything turns warm and golden. The open fields, oak trees, rustic fencing, and rolling hills made the perfect backdrop for their family photos and gave us so much variety in a short amount of time.

One of my favorite things about fall family sessions is mixing the classic family portraits with the less posed moments in between. We made sure to get plenty of the whole family together, but also took time for individual portraits, photos of just mom and dad, and a few more relaxed images exploring the hills. Those are often the photographs that give a gallery its personality.

And the styling for this session worked so well with the location. Their neutral colors, denim, boots, and subtle western touches complemented the golden landscape without competing with it, a great example of how coordinating colors and textures can bring a fall family gallery together without everyone needing to match.

I loved getting to photograph this family and preserve this season of their lives, especially for a friend I’ve known since we were little ourselves.

Fall family sessions don’t always come with golden sunshine and this Pleasanton mini session is proof that they don’t need to.

We had a cloudy afternoon for this family’s fall photos, but the soft, even light ended up being beautiful. The muted sky paired perfectly with the warm fall colors, and we still created bright, gorgeous images with that soft look I love.

And the sisters completely stole the show.

Their little personalities, sweet hugs, and playful moments together made some of my favorite images from the entire session. I always make time for photos of the kids on their own during a family session, and sibling photos are especially fun because they capture a relationship that changes so quickly as they grow.

Of course, we made sure to get plenty of photographs of the whole family together too. Fall mini sessions may be short, but there is still time for a mix of classic family portraits along with the more relaxed, candid moments in between.

One of the things I love most about photographing families outdoors in Pleasanton is that every session feels a little different. Sunshine, clouds, golden hills or fall greenery, each brings something beautiful to the photographs.

If you’re considering fall family photos but see clouds in the forecast, don’t worry. Sometimes those soft, overcast days turn out to be some of the prettiest ones.

What to Wear for Fall Family Photos

This family also did such a beautiful job with their wardrobe. Rather than matching, they chose coordinating shades of cream, camel, denim, and warm golden yellow. The mix of colors and textures worked perfectly with the natural fall tones of the Pleasanton hills.

When choosing outfits for family photos, I always recommend starting with a soft, complementary color palette and then adding different textures and subtle patterns. The goal is for everyone to look like they belong together without wearing the same thing.

For this fall mini session, we photographed in the Livermore hills overlooking Lake Del Valle. This is one of my favorite areas for family portraits—the rolling golden hills, open landscape and warm evening light create such a beautiful California backdrop without taking the focus away from the people in the photographs.

These two have such a sweet connection, and I love the mix of playful moments and quiet snuggles we captured together. Sessions like this are such a good reminder that family portraits don’t have to feel overly posed. Some of my favorite images happen in the little moments in between.

We photographed this session on the top of a parking garage in downtown Livermore just before sunset—and the light could not have been better. It’s one of my favorite examples of how an unexpected location can turn into the perfect backdrop. The soft evening light, neutral surroundings and simple architecture gave us a clean, editorial look that kept all of the focus on her.

What made this session even more special was the family’s choice to wear traditional Filipino attire. I loved photographing the beautiful details of their clothing against the muted colors of the Livermore hills. It was such a meaningful way to celebrate their heritage while creating family portraits that still felt relaxed, natural and completely true to them.

The combination of the fog, rolling hills and traditional clothing made this session unlike any other. It’s a perfect example of why I love photographing families outdoors in the Bay Area, even when the weather doesn’t go exactly as planned, sometimes it gives us something even better.

We started along the water at Lake Del Valle, where the spring landscape and soft evening light created such a beautiful backdrop. I photograph in this area often, but this was one of the first times I really explored the lake itself for senior portraits. The combination of the water, surrounding hills and sunset light gave us so much variety in one location.

From there, we headed into the hills above Lake Del Valle. In the fall, these hills turn the golden tones Livermore is known for, but spring brings an entirely different look with fresh green hills and wild grasses. I love that the same location can feel completely different depending on the season.

Lake Del Valle continues to be one of my favorite Livermore locations for senior portraits, especially for seniors who want a natural California setting with plenty of variety. From the lake to the rolling hills above it, there are so many beautiful options within one session.

I had actually discovered this Walnut Creek location while scouting for fall mini sessions. On that first visit, I remember noticing smoke beginning to appear in the distance, having no idea yet just how devastating the fire in Paradise would become.

When the day of this family’s session arrived, the skies had cleared enough that we decided to move forward. The smoke began creeping back in shortly before we started, giving the hills a soft, hazy look that was completely different from the golden California light I usually photograph here.

Despite everything happening around us, this family showed up ready to have fun together, and we captured their entire session in about 15 minutes. I love how relaxed and connected these images feel — and they remain such a memorable part of that fall season.
