DENVER, Colorado – Installation of a 29 kilowatt solar energy system has begun at SarahCare at DTC which will enable the Adult Day Care Center to generate enough electricity to meet its own energy needs. According to all sources available, this will make SarahCare at DTC the first Adult Day Care Center in the country to operate solely on solar energy.

Caregiver Resolutions

Being a family caregiver is a tough job.  Especially during the holidays when we are expected to not only care for our aging loved one who may have dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, but also to care for the rest of the family.  There is extra shopping, cleaning, cooking and entertaining to do throughout the season.  Caregivers rarely get a chance to look at their own needs.  For January though, we want all family caregivers to slow down and take a deep breath and think about their own needs for a change.   This month Sarahcare adult day care will be offering a support series called RESOLUTIONS FOR FAMILY CAREGIVERS.  In this series we will focus on providing simple and realistic encouragement to caregivers to help them find the support they need to avoid caregiver burnout and better manage their own needs.  Tune in each week in January as we provide you with the best solutions to help you have a very Happy New Year.

Dr. Steven Zarit and colleagues at Penn State University are conducting a new research study, called The Daily Stress and Health Study (DaSH). The DaSH study team are interested in the challenges that family caregivers experience on a daily basis and how programs such as Adult Day Services (ADS) may help with these challenges.  The study is being funded by the National Institute on Aging.

The use of adult day services has been documented to have many benefits for family members caring for an older adult with memory loss.  Programming provided at an adult day center can also help the person with dementia, as well.  Benefits for both include, reducing problematic behavior problems and improving mood.

Diabetes and Seniors Educational Series

From October 25^th to November 30^th we will be writing on the issue of living with and managing Diabetes in the senior years. This will coincide in part with the American Diabetes Association November Awareness Month, but we are kicking off a bit earlier to help caregivers prepare for Halloween.

At SarahCare® we see the struggle with this far too common disease every day in our adult day care centers, both for our family caregivers and their aging loved ones.  Statistics show the prevalence of Type II Diabetes is rising and often happens with a host of other chronic illnesses, especially as we grow older.  This can be particularly challenging for family caregivers, who desperately need detailed advice for specific problems.  How do you manage the diet of a loved one who has both Dementia and Diabetes?  What kind of exercise program is possible for a diabetic when they have limited mobility? We will be discussing these issues and more on our caregiver support blog and Facebook Fan Page.  Please share with us what works and what doesn’t in your family.

It’s not just families. Health care professionals are increasingly concerned about the prevention and management of  the disease. With health care costs spiraling because of chronic illness ($3 out of every $4 dollars is spent on treating and managing them), everyone is looking for a better way. We will be discussing adult day services as a way to better manage elderly diabetes and reduce its occurrence in family caregivers by providing respite.  Tune into our professional ly focused senior chronic care blog for more information.
