Why #ExtremeCouponing is Not Reality for West Michigan or Beyond

This is a subject that comes up at almost every one of my coupon classes......

Let's just get the idea of "Reality TV" out in the open, shall we? From "Real" Housewives, to Teen Mom and even competition shows, "Reality" is hardly real.

Reality is a documentary. Reality is not conversation topics fed to the people in the show via text while filming, 14 hours of tape crunched into 15 minutes of shopping agony, staged competitions for signing/dancing/cooking or even a talk show that puts two or more ex-girlfriends in the same room with the one baby-daddy at the same time. Reality is what someone else in the same situation could reasonably expect to see as a result of the situation. Everything else is a staged circumstance with real people. Period.

So, let's look at Extreme Couponing specifically.

Sorry folks, it's not real. Though some of the deals are real, there are many more that use fake coupons and are all but impossible to replicate for the rest of us. Even the first episode of the third season has already been picked apart for fraud.

And many of those stores bend the rules for the camera crews. What are the chances of you walking into your local Kmart store (who is now a sponsor of the show) and getting to make 23 separate transactions to avoid the five double coupon limit they restrict you to with your rewards card? Not to mention Kmart's past history of issues with their rewards and doubling program. In previous seasons, we've seen stores by pass computer systems and allow double coupons for the show when they don't ever double otherwise.

OH MY GAWD! *eyeroll* - Really? A coupon trip valued at over $1000 and having to pay not even $1.00 (after questionable coupons/practices) is "Life or death". COME ON. "I think I'm going to be sick" "I'm so nervous" and "I REFUSE to pay a penny" are not only over dramatized but ridiculous as well as unrealistic. I'll believe it when I see the lady pass out. Not to mention many of these people admit to buying coupons and use rewards money/points/coupons that they have earned from actually spending money prior to the taping of the show. $43+ dollars in Shop Your Way Rewards do not just magically appear on your card. However, none of that is figured in the final total. That would be reality.

Let's talk about the ~~hoarding~~ stockpiling. Things have expiration dates, and though some of those dates are suggestions, things still go bad. And removing your dining room table to make room for your stockpile? I don't know these people, but that seems like a basic breakdown in priorities to me. I have a stockpile. I also strongly suggest a reasonable stockpile (2-3 months worth in most cases, to last until the next sale comes around) and having some stockpile organization in place.

In the end, what is reality for saving?

Doing what's right for you, within the rules/law. "It doesn't really hurt anyone" is not an excuse. It hurts everyone. From the cashier you talk into taking the coupon on the wrong item who might get in trouble, to the store that doesn't get reimbursed, to the next person in line who gets scrutinized when doing everything right because someone before them pulled a fast one on the store, to the companies that start refusing to put out coupons because of a few bad shoppers. It hurts someone, and it could be you.

Knowing your store policies. And following them, even when they change or when they vary from store to store.

Getting creative and back to basics. Creative meal organization and menu planning from the ad go a long way towards big savings. Cooking in bulk, freezing food and trying new ways to stretch your food supply will all add up over time.

My hope is that those that receive public assistance treat it as a privilege. It is my hope that it is used as it is intended and as a means to aid to getting you and/or your family back to a place where you no longer need it.

With that in mind, I want to help you get to that point faster by providing links, basic guidelines and tips for making it work to your advantage. Knowing and following the guidelines set by the state helps ensure that you keep your benefits for as long as you are eligible and need them.

The Double Up Food Bucks Program starts again on 6/1/12!

This is oh so simple to do. If you receive SNAP/Bridge Card assistance from the State of Michigan, you simply visit a participating farmer's market (there are MANY of them through the state) starting 6/1/12 and do this:

First, visit the Bridge Card booth/tent at the market.
Tell them how much you want to spend, up to $20 from your Bridge Card. They will then take that amount off your card and give you the amount PLUS DOUBLE in tokens to use at the farmer's market on fresh, Michigan grown produce! (ie: if you have $15 taken from your card, they will give you $30 in tokens)
Visit the booth/tent you want to shop for your produce at. Make your selection.
Pay with the tokens.

What to know:

The program officially says produce. However, the site itself also links to articles that say baked goods and meats that are available at the market are eligible. I have not confirmed that and would love to hear from you if you know.

How do you make it stretch?

Shop wisely. Prices can vary from booth to booth at a farmer's market, so make a trip around to check prices and quality before making your purchase.

Buy items that you know you will use before they go bad. All the bonus produce in the world won't do you any good if you don't use it.

Use sites like: Supercook, Recipe Matcher and Cooks to find recipes that use the produce you pick up at the market!

One beautiful afternoon, not so long ago, when my kiddos were at school.....

My son got nice and sporty shorts. My hubby got shorts and socks.

(Sorry about the sideways picture.) My daughter scored the most items and has already worn everything at least once. And I was able to find a new *favorite* top, plus a couple other items. I really do love that purple tank. It was only $8 and is thin. I can layer regular tank under it and not get too hot!

Is Your Coupon Fake?

This is a subject I touch on often in my coupon classes and has great points for you to keep in mind when looking for printable coupons.

A little background.

Fake printable coupons have been around a long time. They really don't take a lot to produce them. I won't go into the details, but someone with the knowledge of how computers read bar codes, a good computer program and upload capabilities can make one.

Why do people make fake printable coupons?

Many reasons. Sometimes it's someone who just wants to see if they can do it. Sometimes it's someone who can't afford the thing they want. Sometimes it's someone who is mad at a company that wants to rip them off.

How can you tell if it's a fake?

First off, if a printable coupon comes to you via email, from a friend, in PDF format and is high value or for a free product, assume IT'S FAKE. Companies just simply don't issue high value and free item coupons that way (yes, they may have once, 5+ years ago, but they know better now and there's technology to help them). There's no limit to how many you can print with a PDF and that just doesn't figure well for the company no matter how you look at it.

A coupon is also, most likely, fake if it's a printable PDF that is NOT hosted on the company website and especially if it's not linked on the company website. Though, occasionally, these are okay. However, I doubt they will be high value and they won't be for free items. You will find them to be $.50/1 for a $5.00 item.

A great resource that you can check before printing/using a coupon that could be fake is this list from the Coupon Information Corporation.

So are PDF's always fake?

No. Always consider these things:

Is your coupon from a legitimate site? (Coupons.com, Coupon Network, Redplum.com, SmartSource.com, the manufacturer website and many others that are totally legit have been around for a long time and often referenced by many other sites/sources. ALSO, sites like mine do have the ability to embed coupons from these companies. I, like many others, are approved affiliates that are given special code to do this. We only get to offer the coupons that are on those sites, we can not create our own additions.) - Then you are okay.
Is the printable coupon for a free item? With the rise in fraud over the last few years, companies have pretty much stopped issuing printables for free items. And if a company does do it, good luck redeeming it as most stores will not accept them anyway.
Did it come via email from a friend? Chances are, it's a fake if it's a PDF coupon. Now, if it's a forward of an email from a company that directs you out of your email to the manufacturer site to print the PDF or trusted coupon printing website where you have to install coupon printing software, you should be good.

Why do "fakes" show up on trusted sites?

Well, they don't really. It's a horrible trend that we've been seeing. Here are some examples of things that have happened recently that cause confusion:

A company issues a coupon on their website. Deal seekers find a way to use the legitimate coupon to get something for free. Company is upset, claims the coupon is a fake. Not pretty, but the truth.
A company issues a high value coupon through a trusted site (like Coupons.com). Because of prior issues with coupon fraud, a retailer/cashier assumes it's a fake even if they can't verify if it's a fake. They are simply protecting themselves.
People sell groups of fake coupons on ebay and other online sites. Yup. That's why YOU need to do your research before ordering and using these coupons. And they are not only PDF printed versions. Sometimes, they are high quality fakes printed to look like a real coupon.

It doesn't make it right in any case, but these are things you should be aware of if you are using coupons. And as much as it stinks to miss a good deal with a legitimate coupon that's been unfairly labeled, it's best to walk away and go on to the next deal and follow up later.

What to do if you find a fake.

DO NOT USE IT. Don't try to justify the use in any way. Do not share it.

Report it. To the friend that sent it to you, to the CIC and to the manufacturer if you can.

I hope this will be a fun series for us all. I've been thinking about it for a long time and finally just decided to ask if I could use the great list another blogger put together. She said YES!

The idea is simple, write a feedback letter to the companies listed. Tell them what you like (or didn't) or what your would like to see in a product and see what their response is. Many times they will send coupons in exchange for your note. Not all companies do and it's up to you to decide what to write and if you want to directly ask for coupons.
