What to Expect from Jim Butcher’s The Cinder Spires: The Aeronaut’s Windlass

The Aeronaut's Windlass will be released September 29th, 2015.

I had the privilege of hearing Jim Butcher read seven chapters of his upcoming book The Aeronaut’s Windlass. If you don’t know him, Butcher is famous for his New York Times best selling book series The Dresden Files and his fantasy series The Codex Alera. The Aeronaut’s Windlass begins a new series called The Cinder Spires. This time, Butcher’s creating a steampunk world, and from what I heard, it’s going to be epic. So while you’re waiting for the book’s release this fall, here’s seven things to expect from the first seven chapters of The Aeronaut’s Windlass.

· Steampunk in the Clouds: Butcher himself calls this series a “Steam Opera”, and rightly so. The world is a deadly sphere, and mankind’s civilization is built above it in the clouds, on spires. These spires are the stages of the highflying adventure of the book, which combines romance and honor with saber fights and fantastic technology.

· Airship Warfare: The only way to travel from spire to spire is airship. So, of course, there are navies, pirates, and smugglers duking it out in the skies. We get one of these air fights rather early in the book, a gripping battle where two ships use cloud-cover to surprise one another in a fight where the first ship to hit the other wins.

· Fast Pace Reading: This book is a rush. Each chapter is from a different character’s perspective, usually from one of the three main characters, though occasionally chapters are from a side character’s point of view. What they all have in common, however, is the pacing. From action scenes to royal drama, it reads quickly, a page-turner that’s guaranteed to keep readers up way too late at night for that one more chapter.

· Crystalpunk: The steampunk comes alive in this series while portrayed in a unique way. Crystals run the ships and gear, though they are volatile in nature, and can backfire in catastrophic ways. From wrist-launchers to ship cannons, the crystals are used devastatingly, and are sure to be a key aspect of the series. Not much was mentioned about them, but they were nearly in every scene, so I’m sure it’ll become a plot point as the story goes on.

· Aristocratic Drama: The book begins with two of the main characters preparing to go to school at an academy for nobility. Tension mounts as old grudges from noble houses surface between students, and new grudges are also created. Not all are equal in the eyes of aristocracy, and Butcher lets superiority complexes bubble into verbal, and physical, schoolhouse brawls.

· Female Protagonists: What I enjoyed the most from the reading were the female protagonists. The Dresden Files is great, but there we get the story from one source: Harry Dresden. Here, however, two of the main characters are young women, both royal, though of very different backgrounds and mannerisms. They’re easily what I enjoyed most about the reading, and look forward to seeing what happens to them in the rest of the book series.

· Talking Cats: And yes, there are talking cats. The best part of the book is also the most discussed online. There are indeed sentient cats, and they. Are. Awesome. Butcher perfects cat-mindedness, and these cats are perfectly willing to share their curt remarks to the humans who displease them, regardless if said humans can understand them or not. One of the female protagonists is from a special noble house that speaks Cat, and it’s her cat companion that steals the show in every scene he’s in. He’s a great character, and I’m sure that soon after the book’s release there’ll be a lot of pictures of cats with his quotes written all over them.

So Skin Game (Book 15) is published and we know a bit of what to expect in Peace Talks (Book 16), what do we know about book 17? Or rather, what has Jim Butcher himself told us about book 17?

Note: At this time all the info/quotes I have below are from Jim's Q&A at DragonCon 2014, I will specify when I find information from other times.

Title: It's called Mirror Mirror.

"The next book after this one is called Mirror Mirror and there's just going to be eye patches and goatees and everything."

Premise: The Dresden Files universe in which one choice is different.

"Kind of the idea is I want to change one choice and make a universe that's different by one choice and see what happens and that will be a great deal of fun for me. Probably not for Dresden though, but you know he's no fun, he's such a wet blanket, he's always complaining."

Content: Evil Harry will Manifest
"Will evil Harry ever truly manifest? Well we'll get to see that yeah."

Molly in Mirror Mirror:
During the September 22nd (2015) Reddit Q&A Jim was asked about Molly - Answer highlighted.

Estimated Release Date: Jim does not typically give out an actual release date until his book has been completed, submitted, and he has a solid date from his publishers. If I hear anything solid or even a guess from Jim I will update here. The following is my guess as to when it will be released and why.

My "Guesstimated Release Date" (as of November 2014) for Mirror Mirror would be no sooner than 2018. That's four years out and I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but for those of you who are interested here is why I'm putting my guess so far out.

November 14th (2014) - Jim finished writing The Aeronaut's Windlass (Cinder Spires, Book 1). A post on his site said he would be taking some time to edit and polish the book before starting on Peace Talks (Dresden Files, Book 16). I'm guessing this process will take the remainder of 2014.

January 2015 - I would like to think that Jim could start working on Peace Talks early 2015. I have heard him remark on several occasions that each book takes about nine months of his life, so lets just assume he is able to start January and finish September. There seems to be about 6 months between his submission of the book to publishers and its release to the public. So we might see Peace Talks early 2016.

October 2015 - Assuming he is able to finish Peace Talks in September, I am assuming that he will write the next Cinder Spires book before continuing on to Mirror Mirror. So lets just think positive that Jim is able to start Cinder Spires book 2 in October 2015 and finish July 2016. This is very optimistic considering how long (both writing time and page numbers) book one took. Cinder Spires book 2 could theoretically release early 2017.

August 2016 - In this guess-world Jim can now begin writting Mirror Mirror. Add 9 months and you get May 2017. Add 6 months for turn around and you get November 2017. I'm thinking it's reasonable to assume there will be at least another two months in there somewhere putting Mirror Mirror's release in 2018.

Now I sincerely hope and that Jim has a long string of healthy, inspired writing years ahead of him where he can crank novels out like pancakes, but assuming life happens (which it tends to do), I'm guessing we'll see Mirror Mirror no sooner than 2018.

Here's what we know:

Title: Peace Talks

Release Date: July 14, 2020 !!!!!!!!

First/Opening Line: February 3rd, 2015 Jim released the first sentence of Peace Talks via Twitter for our speculation and torment.

Synopsis: While it's early to get a real synopsis, Jim has let the following information out over the past year and a half.

"A summit of the world's supernatural powers is being held to try to establish some sort of equilibrium and to get everything settled down in the wake of the vanishing of the red court. And I'm pretty sure everyone's going to sit down and have a nice cup of tea, there'll be a talk, and walk away holding hands." Question and Answer he did in Seattle on May 30th (2014)*

"Peace Talks is all about the various signitories of the Unseely accords are having a convocation in Chicago to try and work out a way to settle down all the discourd that's been happening due to the formor seizing power in the vacuum left behind by the Red Court. So I believe what's going to happen is they're all going to get together, they'll have a nice dinner, they'll hash things out, and then have a couple of beers and sing some songs and everything will be fine. Cause I, you know I want to surprise everybody, so everybody's just looking for it to explode and so on."

Book Begins: Three months after end of Skin Game and MAGGIE'S LIVING WITH HIM!
During his Q&A at Dragon Con (August 2014) Jim said,

"The next book will take place pretty much not too long after the end of this previous one. Normally, there's more or less a year in between them because there's more or less a year in between them and it's just simpler for me, but this one will be, I think there's only - only about three months have gone by. We'll start it in the middle of the next Summer where, you know, Harry is living with his daughter and trying to be a dad while all of this stuff goes down. On the other hand, Maggie does have this big dog and if you want to mess with Maggie you've got to get through the big dog."

The new Spirit of Intellect:

- Her name is Bonea and her nickname is Bonnie (Reddit Q&A September 22. 2015):

- Regarding her knowledge (B&N Q&A in Skokie October 1, 2015)

"The problem with Bonnie is not that she knows a lot, it's that she doesn't know how to apply anything. Like she can tell you all about green and how many nano-meters the wavelength of light that the color green is and so on but she doesn't understand that grass is green yet because she hasn't seen it."

Jim then game a spoiler warning for the first couple chapters. Skip the following quote if you don't want detailed spoilers.

"Harry comes home and Bonnie and Maggie are in the kitchen making pancakes because Bonnie's informed her that she knows 217 recipes for pancakes and the ingredients that they have make 17 of them possible. And so they're trying to make pancakes from this but they don't really know how to tell when it's time to flip the pancake over. You wait till it's golden brown. How do you know when it's golden and brown? It's on the pan. It looks white from here. Harry gets to walk in and Bonnie gets to turn around and say, "pancakes are inanimate!" very excitedly because she just figured out that they're inanimate objects. Bonnie's got a long way to go before she'll be anything but she's where Bob started."

Also at the October 1st Q&A Jim was asked if Harry was going to allow Bob any role in raising Bonnie. His response:

"No, Harry's going to have that Dad with shotgun talk with Bob, really is what it amounts to. But anyway you'll see more of that in the book. We start out early with Bonnie."

Regarding Murphy:

"This book is only set a couple of months after the end of the previous one. So, you know, Murphy is still undergoing surgeries and so on to get fixed because when you get, when you get hurt like that it takes a long time to get better. You know, when you're not some kind of superhuman I work for Queen Mab living punching bag." Jim Butcher on April 11, 2015 at Science Fiction Bokhandeln signing in Stockholm.

More Molly: During the Reddit Q&A Jim also remarked that we would see a little of how Molly was coping with being the Winter Lady in Skin Game, but we would get more in book 16.

Ebenezar/Thomas: November 2014, Jim did an interview on the Once and Future podcast where he was asked "Does Ebenezar know Thomas and Harry are siblings?"

Jim's answer: "Sort of. He's kind of in denial about it. We'll get to see some of that in the next book."

So that should be all kinds of fun. :-)

Ivy & Kincade: When asked when we will see more of Ivy and Kincade (Skokie B&N October 1, 2015) Jim responded, "We'll see more of them next book."

White Council & Awesome Fights:

"We'll get to see the White Council getting involved with things again. So we'll have them on stage. And I'm gonna get to do a bunch of fights I've been longing to write since I first started the series so that's gonna be fun." Jim Butcher (April 11, 2015) at SF Bokhandeln signing - Stockholm.

Georgia/More of the local Chicago Crew/and Property Damage: May 2014 during a Q&A at Wyrd Con 5 Jim was asked "What happened to Georgia, how come she seems to have disappeared?"

Jim's reply: "Georgia is baby crazy. Because she's, because, okay if you are a new parent or if you've ever been a parent, that first year, or two, or three you are baby crazy. You may not know it while you're there, but all your friends know. Because the child has-is driving you insain. Because the child has more endurance than you do. Tell me I'm wrong."

(The audience assured him that he wasn't)

"So really right now Georgia is very busy trying to keep up with her little girl and still working on her doctorate."

(Audience member asks if the little girl has a name)

"No, I haven't named her yet. We'll have to get into that. There's going to be, more of the local crew will be showing up in the next book. Cause everything's going to be happening in Chicago and there'll be lots of property damage."

Conclusion: We are looking at some supernaturally violent peace talks during which we will see more of Ebenezar, the local Chicago crew, Molly, Maggie (I'm assuming by extension Mouse) and Harry trying to be a dad. And apparently these "peace talks" will be accompanied by property damage.

Sounds like fun!

Well, the series has been optioned again! No, this doesn't mean anything for certain, but it is the first important step. Butcher addressed this at the Seattle Q&A as well. See quote below*.

"This is what I can say: The option is-has been sold again. It has been, has been, yeah I've leased it out again. It's to a major production company who's name I'm not at liberty to share with you, but who's movie probably 90% of the people in this room have seen this Summer already and hopefully, there will be something that comes of it. There has been interest expressed by at least one production company in actually picking it up. I don't know if anything will happen with it but it might. It's Hollywood so nothing's certain until the check is cleared. Just getting the check isn't good enough - it's got to clear. But, I mean hopefully, we'll see something. I think it would, really it would be best as a feature production series - Game of Throne style. I think that's how it would be best but certainly movies are also a possibility. I don't have anything concrete yet, when I do - I will be crowing about it."

George R.R. Martin has released the final cover for The World of Ice & Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and The Game of Thrones.

Length

Co-authored by Martin, Elio M. Garcia Jr. and Linda Antonsson, the compilation is marketed as having 336 pages. According to Martin, "We were supposed to provide 50,000 words of text, but... ah... I got carried away." Fifty thousand words translates to about 200 pages.

According to Amazon, The World of Ice & Fire will release October 28th and is already available for pre-order.

Atlantia by Ally Condie Cover and Release date!

Ally Condie (Matched trilogy) has a new stand alone novel coming out November 4th. The working title Rio has been changed to Atlantia and as the name suggests the story is about an underwater world.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I was not a huge fan of the Matched Trilogy.

The writing was very pretty, but I found the first two books very slow. The final book seemed to get all the action that was lacking in the other two, but wasn't enough to make me love the series. I would love to see her next book have a better balance of action to internal contemplation and definitely less quoting of poetry by men. At this point I don't know if those things are characteristic of the author's writing or just part of that particular world and/or characters.

Martin has teamed up with Elio Garcia and Linda Antonsson to write a companion novel to his Song of Ice and Fire series titled The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones. The book releases October 28th (already available for pre-order) and today George R.R. Martin released the above image with an excerpt. See blurb and excerpt below.

Upcoming Release & Movie: Talon by Julie Kagawa Book Cover, Blurb and Optioned for Film!

Julie Kagawa (author of The Iron Fey and Blood of Eden series) has a new series debuting this October (2014) and this one features dragons! First fairies, then vampires and now current day shape-shifter dragons, I give Julie major props for versatility.

MTV released the cover earlier today with some interesting input from the author.

I really like the deep colors of this cover, though the background reminds me of the Lorien Legacies series book covers for some reason.

Talon has been optioned for film by Universal Pictures! As with all books that are optioned this does not mean a movie will ever actually be made, but it is an excellent first step and leaves hope for the future. :)

According to the aforementioned MTV article, the book is being adapted for the screen by Jay Basu and the film will be produced by Chris Morgan (The Fast and the Furious).
