Plants for Topiary

What is Topiary?
Topiary is an ancient art of clipping bushes and trees into decorative shapes. Plants can also be trained to climb up a frame resulting in symmetrical, neat shapes or animals.

What Plants Are Best For Topiary?
Privet is used in garden hedges.

Yew is a slow-growing evergreen. It can grow over 10 feet high and looks spectacular when trimmed into spirals with a hedge trimmer.
Box is ideal for small topiary.
Shrubby honeysuckle is a fast growing hedge.
Juniper is a hardy plant with dense leaves.
Bay trees can be trained into twisty stems and a neat clipped bush.

How Does Topiary Take Shape?
You will need a wire frame in the shape of your choice and a suitable pot. Place the frame in soil and plant something like box to start with as it is easy to maintain. The wire frames cna be simple like a circle or complicated like a dolphin. As the plant grows up the frame gently tease it in the right direction and clip only when the leaves are outgrowing the frame. Don't over do it!

Children's Gardening Calendar

January
Jobs: Ask the children what plants they would like to grow for the coming season, show them pictures in plant catalogues and photos of the previous year's harvest to help them decide. Think about shady spots and the sunniest spots in the garden and try to plant according to those areas. You could even draw a plan for the garden, older children may like to use an online garden planner.
Sow: Strawberries and Sweet Pea - in the greenhouse
Make: Make plant labels. Make paper seed pots. Get the potting area ready. Make bird feeders.

February
Spring bulbs may be showing. This is a good time to explain about roots and shoots and how a bulb grows. Also the difference between seeds and bulbs.
Jobs:Mulch the garden, children will love using a wheelbarrow to move mulch around and dig in the garden.
Sow: Marigolds, Pansy, Cosmos
Make: Paint flower pots. Put up nesting boxes.

March
Jobs:Prepare vegetable patches ready for sowing seeds and planting seedlings.
Sow: tomatoes, sweet peppers, cucumbers, celery, aubergine and salads planted in a greenhouse. Plant onion bulbs in trenches. Sunflowers and beans. Sow into the ground: cornflowers, nasturtiums, radishes, carrots, peas and lettuces.
Make: Make bird scarers.

April
Jobs: Dig up early potatoes.
Sow: Tomatoes and pumpkins
Make: sweet pea wigwams is a fun activity.

May
Jobs:The plants should be doing well, keep watering but not over watered. Water after 4pm and with a watering rose.
Thin any plants that are overcrowded.
Weed as necessary.
Transfer tomatoes and pumpkins out into the ground.
Plant out bedding plants such as violas, small areas can be transformed quickly.
Sow: Radish and spinach.
Clear an area for your butterfly pavilion and send off for your caterpillars and live butterfly garden.

June/July
Jobs: Preserve memories of the garden by drawing pictures of it, taking photographs and pressing flowers. Dehead plants that are dying to prolong their life, store any 'free seeds' in a paper bag. Vegetables may be ready to harvest late June.Train the sweet peas up their wigwam.
Make: Daisy chains.

August
Jobs: Pick fruit, store vegetables for autumn. Continue deheading and weeding. Plan next years garden. Store seeds.
Pick tomatoes and courgette regularly to enourage growth.
Make: A hedgehog hibernation box.

September
Jpbs: Cut off any unripe tomatoes and put on the windowsill. Start to clear the garden and prepare for winter.
Make: Make leaf mould for compost.
Sow: winter lettuce
Plant: spring bulbs such as crocus, daffodils and tulips.

October/November
Harvest: pumpkins
Make: Make pumpkin soup or pie. Pumpkin carvings
Sow: microgreens on a windowsill for indoor veg.
Jobs: Store and put away clean tools for next year.
Clean out nesting boxes.

December
Make: crafts with pressed flowers
Sow: indoor plants on windowsills, terrarium kits are good as they are fun for growing indoors.
Make: christmas decorations, collect holly, ivy, moss and fir cones for making wreaths and tree decorations.

How To Make A Winter Display Container

I had seen this planter in a garden centre and wanted to create something similar, so I picked up a 33cm lightweight pot from The Range for £1.99. It's going to be undercover so I didn't mind it not being terracotta. I thought it would be a nice for G to come home from school to and maybe make some plant markers to go with it.

1. Make sure the pot has holes in the bottom. Put some broken tiles, in the base to help with drainage. I used the polystyrene packet that the plants came in. Good recycling too.

2. Work out what you going to plant and where it is going to go. I tried the dwarf conifers in the large pots first but they looked a little silly so planted them up in the medium pots. I also planted pansies around the edge, about 6-8 per pot.

Just need to brighten up the top of this area more, maybe some wall art? And what can go in the large pot, I was thinking of a nice dark red phormium.

Garden Jobs for December

December jobs for the garden are mostly about the birds. I love it when a Robin arrives in the garden and happily munches away on the food we have left out. Last year there were a few pigeons that came along and ate most of it before giving anyone else a chance, so I took inspiration from for a few good ideas for bird feeders.

How about making this incredibly easy and attractive feeder from homeschoolblogger, using a pomelo, peanut butter and cranberries!

Just scoop out the inside,

Make the filling with 1 pound of lard and 2 cups of peanut butter melted in a large pot, then stir in 4 cups of bird seed and 2 cups of chunky cornmeal and let it cool.

Start threading the pomelo with string and pop on the cranberries.

When you have finished tie it up the top and fill with the peanut butter filling.

Icy pond? Grab youself a pond heater or alternatively leave a football in the pond to prevent ice forming around it.

When you are all cosy in your living room, hopefully beside the fire, take a rest and enjoy flicking through seed catalogues and order your letttuce and cabbages if you haven't already. Make sure you have a nice homemade hot chocolate with homemade marshmallows! This is a dream!

Rockley Park, By the beach and a lovely sunset!

I was lucky enough to be down at Rockley Park recently for a long weekend. It's a caravan park which has daily entertainment for guests and a rather lovely spa. The last time I went was about 15 years ago ( I only live 10 minutes away!) before the refurbishment and now it's all posh! What do you think of our digs then?

Down at the boatyard, there are many different sailing activities you can enjoy throughout the summer.

Not quite a sunbathing beach, but could for beachcombing and foraging (so I've been told).

This is actually better than my kitchen at home. I've always wanted an island.

Okay so the pic is a bit dark but you get the idea, it's cosy but it has the oh so important sea view.

I love this, just me and a glass of wine, relaxing on the decking. Happy days!!! I did go in the spa briefly, I couldn't afford it but I had a good smell around and once I felt relaxed I went on my way.

Coastal Christmas: Glitter Seashells and Boat Tree Decorations

Christmas is a time to showcase creativity and what better than to decorate the christmas tree. Living by the sea conjours up a coastal theme and I think it's incredible. I'm loving Martha Stewarts classic glitter seashell tree.

These are sooo cute and apparently easy to make.

If you are super organised you will have Martha Stewart's range of coastal glitters, if not then decide on a couple of colours and try to variate shades of that colour.

1. Brush white PVA glue across one end of a scallop shell.
2. Use a spoon to sprinkle with glitter, starting with a shade at one end of your color range.
3. Gently shake off excess, and continue applying glue and glitter in sections (no drying time is required) until the final color in your range is applied to the opposite end of shell.
4. Let dry.
5. Turn shell over; glitter reverse side with 1 solid color.

To hang: With a Dremel drill and a 1/16-inch bit, drill a hole at one end of shell. Insert a loop of metallic cord into hole; knot inside shell. (For spiral shells, just hot-glue loop inside shell.) Slip pearl bead over loop; secure with a dot of craft glue.

Seashell Tree Topper

Top a seaside-inspired Christmas tree with a large, glittering shell for a magnificent effect.

Tools and Materials
Dremel drill and 1/16-inch bit
1 large shell, such as a 5-inch Japanese baking-dish scallop shell, seashellcity.com
White craft glue
Glitter, by Martha Stewart Crafts, available at Michaels stores
Pearl Bead, lavalierenyc.com
10-inch length of 26-gauge brass wire

How-To

With the drill, make 2 holes at one end of the shell. Brush concave side with white craft glue, sprinkle with glitter, and let dry. Glitter other side; let dry. Slip pearl bead onto a 10-inch length of 26-gauge brass wire. With the shell's concave side up, insert ends of thread through drilled holes so bead is flush against concave side of shell; twist wire at back to hold bead in place. Use the wire ends to attach the shell to the tree.

Sea Urchin Jellyfish Ornament

Dust shells with glitter to create a seashore-inspired tree.
These spangled sea urchins morph into jellyfish with tinsel tentacles.

Sea Urchin "Jellyfish" How-To
1. Add stripes or dots to a sea urchin shell: Working in sections, use a glue pen to create stripes or dots, and sprinkle with glitter; gently tap to remove excess, and let dry.
2. For the jellyfish "tentacles," use tinsel to form a 3- to 4-inch tassel: Cut strands of tinsel to length and tie the ends together with a 12-inch length of metallic cord, creating a hanging loop.
3. Insert loop through center hole in shell so tassel hangs beneath the shell. Slip 1 pearl bead over loop, and secure with a dot of glue.

Glittered Sailboat Ornament

Tools and Materials

Sailboats (seafaring.com)
Glitter (Martha Stewart Crafts, from Michaels)
White craft glue
Acrylic paint that matches glitter (we used yellow paint for gold glitter, gray paint for silver)
Brush for applying glitter

How-To

Select glitter color for coating sailboat. Tint white craft glue with a small amount of acrylic paint that matches glitter. Working in sections, brush sails and body of sailboat with tinted glue, and coat with glitter. Gently tap to remove excess, and let dry completely.
