Will Tariffs Affect Your Shopping This Season?

Tariffs have been a hot topic for the last few months now. When first imposed by President Trump, the market has been fluctuating, and now the holiday season is upon us, with more tariff wars on the horizon.

This article from the NC University shares a sit-down with the Rob Handfield, Bank of America Distinguished Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management at NC State.

The Abstract: Could you briefly explain how you think about supply chains and trade policy when it comes to holiday shopping?

Handfield: The announcements made by President Trump on “Liberation Day” in April 2025 created chaos in the global trade environment. The U.S. imposed tariffs on 156 countries, including Mexico, Canada, and China, America’s largest trading partners. The tariffs are causing problems for American farmers, who are being told by China and Europe that reciprocal tariffs will negatively impact them as well, which has threatened the U.S. export of soybeans. Prices of U.S. soybeans have tanked during a record crop, as demand for our soybeans goes to other markets in South America. Strategic products like ships, steel and agricultural products will also feel the brunt of the effect of these tariffs.

Essentially, the tariffs act as a new tax on consumers. Even if some countries will be able to absorb some of these tariff impacts, an inflation of 10% in tariffs on $3 trillion of imports will cause massive damage.

Many companies front-loaded and stockpiled inventory before the Christmas season, which is a peak sales time for much of the retail sector. However, consumers have already felt price increases on everything from computers and automobiles to appliances and food.

You have to have customers; in order to be successful! So, what must a business owner do, to get customers?

Running a business requires first, having a plan. Next, you must put your plan into action. If you've planned your business and you've decided that retail is your niche, you're going to need ... products.

Now, there are many ways you could obtain products for your business. But let's start with the basics.

First, will your business be an online business, a traditional brick and mortar business, or both? This is called your business model.

You will need several things. Now, these things will depend on which business model you have chosen. Let's start with the online business. You will need the following, at minimum:

An online business presence; a website or blog.
Financing
Office Supplies
Home or Office Space where you will run your business.
Products to sell

One of the best sources for your retail business and supplies for your business is Alibaba. You will need to decide what kind of products you want to sell. Will your store be, a clothing store? Or an electronic store? Or how about a beauty store? Maybe you want to post general merchandise?

It's really up to you? What is your niche? What is your passion?

At Alibaba, you have several choices of wholesale products that you can buy for your store. If you have an online business, you will need to allocate a location to house your products. At home or storage? Maybe a garage or a well-secured shed.

Finding Wholesale Products from Alibaba

There are an array of products to choose from and are all at wholesale prices. You can find items for your store, add them to your cart, place your order and have it directly shipped to you. *Note: Some items will require you to make inquires to suppliers. You will see the link on the product page.

Your information and payments are safe & easy. There are also many unique products from over 200 countries & regions. This is very important, as many people are looking for these types of products. This will also make your store stand out from all the main stream big-box superstores.

Suggestion: Make sure you have a budget. Believe me, it's real easy to get caught up on the low-costs and deals.

Now that we've talked about online business setups, lets talk about your traditional brick and mortar business models. Remember, every business has a niche. Depending on your niche, you will need to decide what your brick and mortar business model will be like.

Freelancers, photographers and even retailers can benefit from a home-based business model. Setting up a home-based business will entail a few things, *which varies in your state/city. You will need one or more of the following:

Approval from Zoning Office To Operate a Home Business
Business License
Home Office Space-Designated To Operate Your Home Business
Your Home Office Tools-Internet Access, Computer, Desk/Table Camera, Cell Phone, etc
Ecommerce or Service-Related Website
Designated Home-Office Space to Store Any Equipment or Products Used in Your Home Business

Minimal Out-Of-Pocket Upfront Costs

Traditional Brick and Mortar Stores:

This model requires more out-of-pocket upfront costs. You will need points 1-4 and will have more space do designate for your products and services. But, you will have to pay rent for the building of your business, and property taxes, lights, phone and utilities, in addition to your personal bills you already pay for at home. This is a major consideration when establishing a home business.

Then, there's also security. With a home business model, you can watch over your products while being home. But, a traditional brick and mortar requires 24 hour surveillance; both while store is open and closed. You also may need to hire extra personnel to man the grounds while the store is closed, to protect yourself from theft or property destruction.

Brick and mortar stores require more capital and maintenance, but will bring you more traffic and sales potentially; with proper promotion and advertising. (See my biz tip post-Why Adverstise? https://www.sarahssupercenter.biz/2025/02/business-tip-why-advertise.html.

So, you now see the two models. It's simply up to you what you are able and are willing to put into your business.

But, there's one more model I'd like to mention. This model requires absolutely no inventory, minimal costs; i.e. Internet access, a computer, usually your own website and minimal advertising costs.

*Add in costs for your business license and zoning expenses.

It's called Dropshipping!

What is Dropshipping, you ask? Using Google Search, here's the definition:

Dropshipping is a retail fulfillment method where you sell products online without holding any inventory yourself; instead, when a customer places an order, you forward it to a third-party supplier who then ships the product directly to the customer.

No Inventory Required:

As a dropshipping retailer, you don't need to store or manage any products in a physical location.

Order Fulfillment by Supplier:

When a customer buys something from your online store, you forward the order details (including the customer's shipping address) to your dropshipping supplier.

Supplier Ships Directly:

The supplier then prepares the order and ships it directly to the customer, often using their own packaging or branding.

Focus on Marketing and Sales:

You focus on marketing your online store, attracting customers, and managing the sales process, while the supplier handles the logistics and shipping.

Low Startup Costs:

Dropshipping can be a relatively low-cost way to start an online business, as you don't need to invest in large amounts of inventory.

Profit Margin:

Your profit comes from the difference between the price you sell the product for and the price you pay your supplier.

Example

You have an online store selling phone cases. A customer buys a case from you. You then forward the order to your dropshipping supplier, who ships the case directly to the customer.

So, this platform can be the easiest, but there can be some potential problems too. Some of them are as followed:

Product Inspection Capabilities- You will be unable to check the product for cleanliness, product correctness, or damage. The only recourse is to provide after care.
Customer Service-You can maintain control of your customer service, but the shipper will usually set terms for product returns and shipping times. You will need to adjust your terms to theirs.

Once a year, we hear this term. We all look for a small business to support on #ShopSmallSaturday.

But do you know that shopping small can bring benefits to the economy every day? Let's see a few ways:

Shopping small can benefit the economy in several ways. It can:

Stimulate local economies by cycling money back into the community. Small businesses are made up of groups of people who are neighbors. By buying small, we support our neighbors, which build strong economic growth in our local neighborhoods, and builds long-lasting, flourishing relationships even. These small businesses also give back to the communities.
Reduces the carbon footprint due to less transportation. What is carbon foot printing? A formal definition of carbon footprint is as follows: "A measure of the total amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) emissions of a defined population, system or activity, considering all relevant sources, sinks and storage within the spatial and temporal boundary of the population, system or activity of interest.

Today, the local delivery lady dropped off a packet of deals from our local merchants. I had to run errands, and while waiting, I browsed through the ads.
I noticed some stores I'd never even heard of, until I saw their ads. It perked my interest, and even made me an avid customer, with some.

I also realized that there were some of my favorite stores that I had completely forgotten about, until I saw their ads.
Which brings me to the next point:

● Advertising is necessary for every business; whether you're just starting up, or you're a well-established business veteran; whether great or small.
Your goals may differ, but every business owner should agree that having an established business does no good, if people have no clue who and where you are. Advertising makes and keeps others aware of your business, and what you have to offer

●Frequent advertising grows your business and customer base. Be sure to create a marketing plan, for frequent advertising campaigning. Planning will help you get the maximum results out of your advertising and marketing efforts.

but, driving in the Winter Weather can really give you the blues. Not only is it uncomfortable, but, it can also be very hazardous. Snow Storms cause delays in travel, and terrible car problems.

Here are some tips to help you stay safe while driving:

Preparation-Always prepare your car for Winter Weather, before you set out to drive. You can prepare by performing certain vehicle checks, which I will discuss later down the line. You should also prepare daily, by checking your local Weather and Traffic reports, for road and weather conditions.
During Driving- Always stay alert and keep your eyes on the road. Pay attention to any changes in traffic, such as any detours, or road signs, giving you certain instructions.

Be sure to maintain a safe driving distance from the driver in front of you. Adjust your speed

to driving conditions, and make sure roads and signs are visible. If you need to use head lights,

high beams, windshield wipers, or fog lights, make sure they are in good working condition prior to you starting your journey.

Pay attention to your vehicle. Be aware of any strange sounds or noise coming from your

car. Be aware of steering and tire conditions. Does your vehicle seem to be off balance while

driving in Winter Weather conditions? Are tires wobbly, or maybe your vehicle is veering to one side or another?

Post Driving-You should check the condition of your vehicle, even after driving. Check for any damages to the vehicle that you may have not been aware of during your drive. When parking, be sure your parking brake is on, if you park on a hill top, to avoid your car sliding downhill.

Finally, here are some tips on keeping your car Winter Ready:

As stated earlier, it is important to prepare your vehicle for the driving conditions of Winter. First, you should check your owner's manual for instructions and recommendations on maintaining your vehcile. The manual gives you very important knowledge,from the manufacturer, that will aid you in maintaining your car properly;
Some of the most important general tasks of keeping your car Winter Ready are: making sure your tires are at the correct pressure. You may want to invest in some snow tires, if you live in areas that accumulate high volumes of snow.

You will also want to ensure that your engine oil levels are good. It is recommended that you check your engine oil levels every time you fuel up. *Tip: it's very important to ensure that you

neither have too little or too much oil in your engine. Doing either can cause damage to your

engine. Be sure to read the dipstick correctly. You should see oil either above the low or first

mark, or anywhere below the high or second mark, on your dipstick. (Again, be sure to check

your manuals for more details).

Another very important task is; make sure your brakes are in good working condition. It is

always important to do this, but, especially in adverse weather conditions.

You also want to make sure your heating and defrosting systems are working properly. You

should have these checked prior to Winter, so you and your car can stay warm and defrosted.

The key to getting through the Winter is: to be prepared, be aware, and be active, before, during and after driving.

Google has announced that it will be retiring it's Google Checkout for Merchants program.

Google Checkout Merchant

ATTENTION: On November 20, 2013, Google Checkout will no longer be supported. Sellers of digital goods on Google (Google Play, Chrome Web Store, Offers Marketplace and Google Wallet for digital goods) will automatically transition to Google Wallet and will not be impacted. Learn more.

Retiring Google Checkout Announcement

On November 20th, 2013, Google will shut down its Checkout product. Here’s how this may affect you:

Merchants selling digital goods may transition to Google Wallet for digital goods
Merchants selling through Google-hosted marketplaces (e.g. Google Play) will be unaffected
Merchants selling physical goods will need to switch to third-party alternatives (see below)

This decision was not made lightly—ultimately, we decided our focus is best concentrated on other areas of the payments space. As we begin to sunset this product, you can expect to see a number of changes through 2013:

Next, listed below are, specific deadlines in the transition phase; steps you need to take to process your final orders, receive your payouts. and remove any Google Checkout links/payments from your site, etc.

Most of us all can remember some time in our lives when we've heard the words, "pay attention". Maybe it was from a parent, a teacher, a driver's ed instructor, or just your inner voice shaking you up from your daydreaming, and bring you back to the real world. Nevertheless, whatever voices you heard, it was surely a beckoned calling; one that would help save you from costly mistakes.

Some things you can do:

Take your time: Whether you are writing an article, reading a book, reviewing your bookkeeping entries for the week, entering customer orders in your Customer Management Databases/Order Carts, or creating and going over a shopping list for the week, it is important to pay attention to detail. People seem to be so busy these days. It's important to slow down, and review the details of everything that you do.
Proofread: Especially when writing for others, or editing a report, it's important to proofread, in case you have made mistakes. You can then fix the errors before they get out of hand.
Stay organized: Keep your thoughts organized and focused on your tasks. Keep your desk and office free from clutter. (This helps with the focusing on tasks, and helps you pay attention more clearly)

These are just a few simple steps you can take to help you pay attention to detail. They will keep you from having to redo things, prove your competency, prove that you care about accuracy, and make yours, and others' lives easier
