I love underdogs.  I love scrappy young upstarts who buck the system and manage to come out on top.   So, when I see Torchlight scoring an 86 over at Metacritic and getting positive front page coverage at Penny Arcade…well, it’s just a Irish jig fest all around.

Looking for a little Diablo style lovin’, but can’t stand the idea of waiting around until 2023 or whenever Blizzard gets Diablo 3 out to us?

Well, here’s a little tasty sidedish that will fill that need for loot whoring and 3/4 overhead hack-and-slashin’ that you just can’t get enough of.  The designers that brought you Diablo 1 and 2 and Fate for the PC have splintered off and created their own game studio, Runic Games, and bring to you the version of Diablo that they wanted to make: Torchlight.

This game was one of the first games I saw and wrote about in PAX (article here) as being a great bargain (retail for $19.99, releases 27 OCT).  While it has no multiplayer element to it right now, it will release with the full game editor to create their own extensive modding community, and promises that in 18 months, their next major release will be the MMORPG version of the game.

Fun fact: the person in charge of their marketing is named Wonder, who actually recognized the Sarcastic Gamer name; two of the kids she used to babysit listened to the original Red show and apparently enjoyed tormenting her by quoting from the podcasts!

The Internet is afire with talk of Batman: Arkham Asylum. And for good reason: It’s an awesome game. One of the best of 2009 thus far, in my eyes. Guinness World Records actually dubbed it the “Most Critically Acclaimed Superhero Game Ever.” Seems kind of strange to me, seeing how reviews are subjective, but who am I to poke the beast? Rumor is, if you question the group, it manifests as a dragon and gives you a vasectomy. Now, I might drive five over the speed limit, but I prefer to keep my cobra venomous. I might want kids at some point in the future. Not to experience the joys of parenthood, but to have free labor to reenact episodes of Salute Your Shorts.

In lieu of a written review, Shanghai Six and I sat down to chat about the game, covering boss fights, the setting, Detective Mode, and some other things that would make this sentence way too long if I included them. We did not, however, discuss the Jonas Brothers, rainbows or totem poles. We figured you wouldn’t mind though.  (Audio after the jump)

Find out why the Community ‘Casts are such a big deal and why they made the list after the jump!

Sarcastic Gamer has always been an active community, full of talented, funny and yes, sarcastic gamers who come together to laugh, rant, cheer and generally have fun with everything involved with our favorite activity: gaming. The majority of the SG staff were plucked from the forums and we all (the SG staff) do our very best to make sure the SG community gets the props (and content) that they deserve.

The rules are simple: Shows cannot be longer than 20 minutes, they must be family friendly (no quoting George Carlin on air), cast members must be registered members of the SGC and be in good standing. That’s it. The shows received their own SGCP feed and lots of help diving into the exciting world of video game podcasting.

We knew it would appeal to a lot of people, and that (seeing as how the SGC is full of talented, funny people) the shows would be great, but what we didn’t know, was just how many people would want to make their own podcast, or how popular they would become. Quite frankly, Sarcastic Gamer just would not be the same without them now.

Here’s a quick rundown of SG’s community podcasts and their respective hosts. Oh, and YES, the SG staff DOES listen to the shows, we just can’t comment on them all or listen to them all as soon we’d like sometimes.

Resonator: The Podcast that popped the community cherry, the show is hosted by 8Bit Bass, DogsDieInHotCars and Snaps. It also resonates with the community, go figure.

Younglings: Apparntly anyone between 13 and 17 years of age is a youngling. Young they may be, but Tobitron, Gir15 and Professor Chaos give us something special (who are we to call THEM immature?) every episode.

Livecast: Happy madness hosted by DarkWonders, Animathias and DeathByWaffle.

Griefcast: Featuring the insanity that is Kiljoy and the memorable voice of DolmenRage.

Casual Core: Hosted by Zinc136 and Demonoid, they keep the show so casual I think they forget their recording sometimes!
