Sardinia continues to attract the rich and famous to its stunning beaches and glamorous resorts; in the last couple of weeks football couples Jamie and Louise Redknapp, and Peter Crouch and Abbey Clancy have been enjoying a holiday in Sardinia. But you don’t need to earn footballers’ wages to holiday on the Italian island this summer: Sardinian Places has some fantastic savings with a week in a 2 bedroom villa with pool for just £380 for arrivals this Sunday. A saving of £1678.

Specialist tour operator Sardinian Places has added another villa with private pool to its collection, giving holidaymakers even greater choice on the Italian island. Villa Haggea is a comfortable three bedroom villa in a sought-after hillside location near Capriccioli on the Costa Smeralda. The property is the sister property of another already featured by the operator which is one of the most popular in their Premium Collection.

Possibly the main attraction of Villa Haggea is the uninterrupted view of the coastline and across the dramatic wind-sculpted rocky peaks of the surrounding countryside which can be enjoyed from the balcony, the shaded terrace or the private infinity pool. The property can be rented from £2603 for seven nights on accommodation only basis and a choice of low cost flights are available.

The pound has increased in strength against the euro in the past couple of weeks and is now higher than at any point this year, meaning your money will go further when on holiday in Sardinia.

The pound was worth 1.1758 euros earlier today and when trading closed yesterday it was worth 1.1672. Recent negotiations with property owners also mean many holidays have been reduced in price – a two-bedroom apartment sleeping four now starts from £674 for a week, that’s just £168.50 per person.

VILLA MARIA
SARDINIA, ITALY
(Sleeps 10)

Newly available this year, Villa Maria is built into a rocky hillside on Sardinia's beautiful north-east Costa Smeralda. It's an area to avoid in stifling August, when the Italian glitterati descend en masse, so consider visiting in May or June, when the prices are far lower and the weather is usually blissful. The house divides neatly into two interconnecting but self-contained levels with separate kitchens and living areas, which works well for two families holidaying together. It's not an ideal choice for younger children, however, because of steep drops at the side of the pool area.

Plus point Next door to Villa Maria is another villa called Lu Triuzzu which can accommodate six people - a useful 'add-on' for extended families or larger groups.

Price £2,639 to £5,278

Mr Stanowski wins a short break for two to Paris after being selected from hundreds of holiday questionnaires returned by holidaymakers after their stay in Sardinia.

Mr Stanowski spent two weeks in a villa in Alghero in the North East of the island last August and is now looking forward to a short break to Paris with Sardinian Places’ sister company Great Escapes.

Alghero, Sardinia
Although located in Sardinia, Alghero's cobbled streets and medieval centre are strongly reminscent of old towns on the Italian mainland such as Sanremo and Sorrento. In the evening, avoid the crowds and head up onto the fortified walls of the town's bastion: it's a great place to watch the sun set over the dramatic sea cliffs of Capo Caccia. Afterwards, dip into the town's lively restaurant scene: Mabrouk (Via Santa Barbara), is a fantastic fish restaurant run by a brother and sister. The brother fishes during the night and the sister prepares the catch for the next day's supper. There's no menu; it all depends what the sea gives up each night. Or try Al Tuguri, which specialises in traditional Catalan dishes - worth visiting for the crème brulée alone.
For a day trip, one of the most spectacular sights around Alghero is the Grotta di Nettuno - stunning sea caves beneath a sheer cliff face. Boats go from Alghero's port and the return trip takes around two-and-a-half hours.
Stay: peacefully located between Piazza Ginnasio and the bastion of Cristoforo Columbo, the Apartment Storico oozes character and history. The apartment is on two floors with two double bedrooms, an elegant dining room and fully fitted kitchen. From £674 a week through Sardinian Places (0845 330 2050; sardinianplaces.co.uk).

The S’Ardia is an exhilarating horserace that takes place each year in the village of Sedilo in the Oristano province in Sardinia. Each year around 100 riders take part in this fast and frenzied race through the dusty streets to remember the battle of Milvio which took place between Constantine and the pagan Maxentius.

The race will take place on the evening of the 6th July and again the following morning in the area around the church of San Costantino and each year a crowd of around 30,000 come to watch the spectacle. To see photographs of last year’s event visit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/9929173@N04/sets/72157600760710395

The country hotel Mandra Edera in Abbasanta is an ideal place to stay and travel to nearby Sedilo for S’Ardia. Set in 30 hectares, Mandra Edera offers complete tranquillity and the chance to explore the area on horseback, jeep safari or on foot. The hotel is also renowned for its excellent organic home cooking, direct from the farm. A week at Mandra Edera during July costs £371 per person based on two sharing on bed and breakfast basis (flights extra).

Each year Sardinia hosts hundreds of festivals across the island which are both vital to its unique culture and spectacular events for visitors to witness. The Cavalcata Sarda in Sassari is one of the most important festivals bringing together people from all over Sardinia to celebrate their independent traditions. During this one-day event the town of Sassari in North West Sardinia comes alive with a colourful procession, traditional costumes, dancing, singing, poetry and horse riding displays.

The Cavalcata is fairly unique in Sardinia in that it does not have a religious connection – it is believed to date back to 1711 when the town took to their horses to honour the King of Spain. On 20th April 1899 King Umberto I of Italy and his wife Queen Margherita visited Sassari and hundreds of people on horseback took to the streets to commemorate the occasion. Now an annual event, this year the Cavalcata will take place on 23rd May 2009.

Sardinian Places has a number of villas, apartments, houses and hotels for rent in nearby Alghero and the surrounding area in North West Sardinia. The company can also arrange car hire to make it easier to explore the region and travel to Sassari.

Discover Central Sardinia - authentic island life and cuisine

Although Sardinian Places’ stronghold lies in the North, the specialist offers three hotels within the centre of the island, which it believes offers its clients an authentic taste of Sardinian life and its organic cuisine.

Mandra Edera - Abbasanta
Set in thirty hectares of its own grounds in Abbasanta - Mandra Edera - with just four rooms and eight suites - is a haven of tranquility and hospitality.
The restaurant of this country hotel offers home cooking using organic ingredients sourced directly from the farm. If inspired to want to improve their own culinary skills, Mandra Edera’s chef also runs cookery courses for their guests. To balance indulgence with activity, Mandra Edera, with a strong equine passion, offers horse-riding lessons, as well as riding excursions and trekking. Non-equestrian options include jeep trips, walking, or relaxing in the property’s pool, Jacuzzi or solarium. In the vicinity are two of the most important archeological sites on the island, the Loca Nuraghe and the Santa Cristina. In early July, the annual S’Ardia horse race in the nearby village of Sédilo is an event not to be missed.

4* Hotel Su Gologone - Oliena
Hotel Su Gologone stands surrounded by oak, olive and juniper trees below the towering limestone hills that range from Nuoro to the sea. The hotel is built in local style and whilst some rooms overlook the gardens, most have views over the forest-covered mountains. Su Gologone has an excellent restaurant, which attracts gastronomes from all over the island. The focus is on traditional Sardinian specialties, a sample dish on the menu being “porchettu” - pork roasted on juniper wood spits to add flavour. Also on offer is a variety of homemade pastas, breads and pastries, as well as a choice of wines, including the very good local Oliena wine.

4* Hotel Su Lithu - Bitti
Perched above the small town of Bitti and run by the Giovanetti family, Hotel Su Lithu emphasises the traditional way of life. The fifteen spacious rooms all enjoy views out over the valley or the surrounding park. The hotel’s restaurant offers fine cuisine using fresh-flavoured local produce coming directly from the family’s farm at Sa Preta Ruia, which guests are also able to visit. For those who wish to explore further afield, the hotel can also arrange excursions to nearby archaeological sites or other places of interest.

Similar options in the North, offered by Sardinian Places, include Agriturismo Tenuta Pilastru, a small, family-run country hotel immersed in the Galluran countryside, 5km from the market town of Arzachena and just a ten-minute drive away from the nearest beaches. Tenuta Pilastru is renowned for its authentic country cooking using local ingredients. The meat and wines come directly from the Agriturismo’s own production and the homemade pasta is prepared according to traditional recipes – a real culinary delight. Sardinian Places offers 7 nights accommodation-only at Agriturismo Tenuta Pilastru from £269 per person (price based on selected May departures and based on two sharing a room including breakfast).
Central Sardinia accommodation-only prices start from £299 per person – based on 7-nights at Hotel Su Lithu.

Renowned for having a strong sense of tradition and passion for their island, Sardinians host a wealth of festivals throughout the year. Sardinian Places is keen to highlight Cavalcata Sarda, one of the biggest and most high profile events, which begins near the start of the season on 24 May.

The Cavalcata Sarda in Sassari, near Alghero (North West Sardinia), is a day long event which brings together people from all over the island and, originally a grand show laid on for visiting royalty, provides a brilliant demonstration of Sardinian culture and history. The town comes alive with colourful decorations, parades, horse shows, poetry competitions, chants and traditional dances, and the magnificent costumes and jewellery worn reflect the handicrafts of the island. Many of the professional riders who participate go on to demonstrate equestrian races and stunts at a racetrack on the edge of the town.

Sardinian Places product manager, Amandine Blanchard comments:
“The Cavalcata Sarda is one of the most important festivals of the year, providing an excellent opportunity for spectators to experience the heart and soul of the real Sardinia.”

Sardinian Places offers a wide choice of property options in the North West. These include the two-bedroom Apartment Storico - Sardinian Places’ first property in Alghero’s old town. Exuding charm and character, the property is within easy walking distance from a long white-sand beach. Valid for arrivals on 23 May, Sardinian Places is offering 7-nights self-catering accommodation at Apartment Storico for £793 (resulting in a saving of £455 from brochure price). The price is for the property for the week. Flights & Car Hire can be quoted.

Sardinia’s new governor Ugo Cappellacci is to scap so called “luxury taxes” which were introduced in 2006 and apply to all yachts over 14 metres mooring on the island and all private aircraft touching down on Sardinia. The fees for yacht owners were as much as fifty times more than comparable charges in Greece, Corsica and Croatia.

Under the “luxury tax” system owners of yachts beween 14 metres and 16 metres in length must pay 1,000 euros for mooring at any of the island’s ports, even if just for a day. For yachts over 60 metres the charges rise to 15,000 euros.

Ugo Cappellacci announced his plans in a draft budget presented to trade unions on Tuesday.

Sardinian Places has added a new residence to its 2009 accommodation collection.

Le Antunne boasts an enviable location in the centre of Porto Cervo in Costa Smeralda.
The marina, as well as the bars, restaurants and high fashion boutiques housed on the famous “Piazzetta” are only a short stroll away, plus the nearest sandy beach at Piccolo Pevero is also within each reach (700m).

This new residence consists of thirteen mini-villas, each offering its guests privacy, whilst sharing a good-sized swimming pool.
There are both two and three bedroom villas available, both of which are characterized by spacious, open-plan living/dining areas, well-equipped kitchens, air-conditioning throughout (payable locally) and terraces offering views across the marina and ocean.
Each villa also has its own private garden with barbeque facilities.

Sardinian Places product manager Amandine Blanchard comments on the appeal of Le Antunne:

“We are delighted to add Le Antunne to our portfolio of accommodation. It’s a gem, as it has a very sought-after address, but it also enables the holidaymaker to get away from the hustle and bustle of Porto Cervo. Nestled amongst a very typical Sardinian landscape of olive trees, granite rocks and maquis, I believe it will very soon become one of our most popular properties.”

Sardinian Places offers 7-nights accommodation-only in Le Antunne from £1038 (price is based on selected travel dates in September 09 and represents a saving of £100). May prices start from £1395, again with a £100 discount. This is for a two-bedroom mini-villa and is the property price for the week. Flights and car hire can be quoted. A welcome hamper, linen, end of stay cleaning and the services of an English-speaking representative are included within the price.

Last week the Mediterranean island of Sardinia hosted the 27th Giro di Sardegna (Tour of Sardinia) a cycling event held over five stages. The overall winner was Italian Daniele Bennati who had overtaken the leader’s jersey at the end of the 147 kilometre fourth stage on Friday. He held off pressure during Saturday’s fifth round to finish ahead of Oscar Gatto and Alessandro Ballan.

The stage race attracted 15 teams of 8 riders who competed on the streets of Sardinia over eight days, ending in Cagliari in the south. The majority of participants were Italian but the event also attracted cyclists from Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Argentina, Denmark, Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Russia, Belarus, UK, Austria and Lithuania.

Bennati adds his name to the list of prestigious past-winners dating back to the first race in 1958. The last edition of the Giro di Sardegna was held in 1997 but this year’s success is already looking promising for a 2010 edition.

The island of La Maddalena, situated between Sardinia and Corsica, is to host the 35th G8 Summit this summer from 8th to 10th July. Italy took over the Presidency of the G8 at the start of 2009 and will also host a series of meetings in the run up to the Summit.

The Sardinian archipelago of La Maddalena is a stunning unspoilt area made up of sixty islands which is recognised as a national marine reserve. Except for La Maddalena, the village of Stagnali on the island of Caprera and a few houses on Santa Maria, the archipelago is on the whole uninhabited –sailors, snorkellers and divers are attracted by the unspoilt natural beauty of the region and holidaymakers can book day trips cruising the islands.

The island of Caprera is famous as the final resting place for Giuseppe Garibaldi who sought exile on the island in the 19th century. He is buried on the island and the cemetery, house and outhouses he built make up the Garibaldi Compendium, one of Italy’s most popular museums.

Sardinia’s coastline is one of the finest in the Mediterranean and offers character through contrast – dramatic limestone mountains drop to secluded coves in the east, the west is rich in powdery sand dunes and the north and south are abundant in golden beaches.

Sardinian Places offers specially selected ‘Family Collection’ properties and the beaches being exceptionally clean and gently shelving, add to the overall child-friendly ethos of this Italian island.

A good range of watersports is available on most of Sardinia’s coasts during the summer, including waterskiing and windsurfing. Porto Pollo, near Palau in the north is a favourite spot for surfers, as well as the place for kite-surfing. Sailing is another popular pursuit, particularly around Alghero, the Costa del Sud, the Costa Smeralda and the Maddalena archipelago. Sardinia is also one of the Mediterranean's best locations for diving.

Sardinian Places product manager, Amandine Blanchard, selects her three top beaches across the island:

Baia Chia (Chia)- described as one of the best beaches of the southern coast, Baia Chia takes the form of a perfect arc of sandy dunes, complete with a small lagoon, a Spanish tower, red cliffs and green hills. Sardinian Places offers the semi-detached house, Casa dei Fiori, which, complete with its own garden, is only a two-minute walk to this beach.

Spiaggia del Principe - This is an off the beaten track beach, (not signposted and accessed via a dirt track), hidden in the north east of the island between Porto Cervo and Capriccioli. Sheltered, with white sands and crystal clear waters, this beach is typical of the Costa Smeralda with its granite rock formations. Sardinian Places offers Lu Triuzzu - a new addition to their Premium Collection – a 15-minute drive to Spiaggia del Principe. This three-bedroom house was built around an existing rock, which now forms the centrepiece to this unique hideaway retreat.

Spiaggia le Bombarde – Offering the best of both worlds, this beach can be found in the northwest between Alghero and Capo Caccia. White sands, clear water and views across Alghero lie on the one side; a rugged coastline and Capo Caccia on the other - all backed by pine trees and favoured by the locals, with bar and restaurant facilities on site. Sardinian Places properties in the area include the three-bedroom Casa delle Palme, which occupies an elevated hillside position and is set in its own gardens, accommodating its private pool.

Sardinian Places offers 7-nights at Casa dei Fiori from £753 (property price for the week). Flights and car hire can be quoted, if not booked independently.

Sant’Efisio is one of the most important festivals on the island of Sardinia and is a truly remarkable sight to behold. It is held every year in Cagliari in the south of the island and celebrates Saint Efisio who is said to have been decapitated on the beach at Nora near Pula on the 15th January 303 A.D.

The main event of the four-day festival is a four-hour procession through the streets of Cagliari on 1st May which has taken place every year since 1656. Hundreds of people from all over the island travel to the city for this important event. Participants dressed in national costumes parade the streets on foot, horseback or on colourful oxen drawn floats accompanying the effigy of the saint.

Following the procession through the streets of Cagliari there is a two-day pilgrimage to Nora, 24 kilometres south of the city, for moving religious celebrations commemorating the place of Saint Efisio’s execution. The procession departs from Nora after Mass on the evening of 3rd May, stopping in Pula, Sarroch and other villages en route before arriving back into Cagliari on 4th May for a torch light procession to the church of Stampace.

Specialist operator Sardinian Places includes a number of Spa hotels within its 2009 brochure – ideal holiday choices for honeymooners or for those seeking a more relaxing and indulgent getaway.

Sample hotels include the 5* Hotel Capo d’Orso Thalasso & Spa, tucked away in the bay of Cala Capra, a completely unspoilt corner of North East Sardinia. The hotel is located on the waterfront within just a few hundred metres of two white sandy beaches and is only 4km away from the shops and restaurants of Palau. With a setting so closely connected to the sea, the ‘ocean’ is a key ethos of the hotel. Panoramic views stretch across the Arcipelago della Maddalena and facilities include a Thalasso & Spa Centre, two seawater swimming pools and solariums positioned directly on the ocean.

Sardinian Places also offers a complimentary Honeymoon & Anniversary package when clients book the Hotel Capo d’Orso Thalasso & Spa*. This package includes the following at no cost: entrance to the Thalasso & Spa Centre ‘L’Incantu’, with use of the Thalasso pools; use of the Turkish Bath and Relaxation Area; a boat excursion and three golf lessons. Seven nights at Hotel Capo d’Orso on a bed & breakfast basis starts at £399 per person. This price is based on two sharing a Classic Room and is valid for arrivals on 23 May 09. Flights & care hire can be quoted.

Also in the North East, the 4* Petra Segreta Resort & Spa is positioned high above the village of San Pantaleo and enjoys panoramic views across the Galluran countryside and the Costa Smeralda beyond. Set amongst seven hectares of land filled with granite rocks and olive and juniper trees, the hotel offers exclusive, luxury accommodation in the style of a modern stazzu (Sardinian farmhouse). Two natural wind-sculpted granite grottoes house the Health & Spa centre, which includes a Turkish bath, Roman sauna, Jacuzzi, and heated marble table for massages.

Additional Spa hotels featured by Sardinian Places include the 5* Hotel Villa Las Tronas in Alghero, North West Sardinia - possibly the most unique hotel to be found in Sardinia, as it stands on a natural peninsula. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, in many cases guests can actually swim in the ocean directly from their own terrace. Transformed to its current castle-like style in the 1920’s, Villa Las Tronas was the holiday home of the Kings of Italy until the 1940’s and then in 1959 was converted into a hotel.

Former 007 star Roger Moore remembers learning to jet-ski in Sardinia as one of his favourite moments in the role of James Bond. In an interview in the February edition of The Sunday Times Travel magazine he is asked whether it was all work whilst filming. He replies: “Quite the opposite. One of the best things I ever did was learn to ride a jet-bike in Sardinia for The Spy Who Loved Me. I had to be able to stay on without getting my suit wet, so I spent weeks just jet-skiing around the bay.”

Carnival (or Carneval) is celebrated all over Sardinia and is one of the biggest events of the year. In 2009 celebrations will take place between 19th February and Ash Wednesday on 25th February. Across the island masked and costumed figures parade through both small villages and bigger towns. Alghero in the North West of the island holds a procession every year with decorated floats whilst nearby Bosa, just 30 kilometres away, has a particularly interesting tradition involving white and black witches of pagan origin.

Other particularly interesting events during Carneval week include a medieval horse race in Santa Lussurgiu where riders try to snatch a chicken strung across a road; until recently a live chicken was used but today the experience is a little less shocking. Other highlights include the Ash Wednesday procession at Ovodda where visitors have to blacken their faces before they can enter the town and 800 Tamburos drummers parading the streets of Gavoi.

New Guide to Sardinian Grammar

The author of the Dictionary of Sardinian, Professor Mario Puddu has published a guide to the grammar of the Sardinian language, the first of its kind to attempt to deal with all variations of the language.

Although the official language of Sardinia is Italian, Sardo is widely spoken and varies greatly from region to region and even between neighbouring villages. The island’s turbulent past is evident in the language’s influences which include Latin, Arabic, Spanish and Catalan.

Professor Puddu has been researching the grammar for five years; at 656 pages it is a comprehensive guide covering phonetics, syntax and history. It is written in Sardinian and so for many the author’s previous work, the dictionary (Ditzionàriu de sa limba e de sa cultura sarda, Cagliari: Condaghes 2000) will be a vital tool. You can translate from/to Sardinian using the online version of the Dictionary at www.ditzionariu.org

A designated ‘Family Collection’ of properties is a new addition for 2009 for specialist travel company Sardinian Places.
By its very nature Sardinia is a low-stress family destination. Approximately just a two-hour flight from the UK, this Mediterranean island offers a comfortable climate and wealth of unspoilt and gently shelving beaches.

Family-friendly properties with that little bit extra have resulted in the tour operator compiling its own ‘Family Collection’, which is certain to please parents and children alike.
Well-appointed with a minimum of a swimming pool, television with DVD player and a microwave, the selected properties are also equipped with buckets and spades, beach umbrella and a cool box for picnics on the beach.

There are nine ‘Family Collection’ properties within the Sardinian Places’ portfolio.
These include the two-bedroom villa, Casa Querce in Pula, in the south of the island.
Casa Querce delights with the sheer size of its immaculately kept lawns and gardens, which include a private swimming pool, pond, rock pool and olive trees. Exuding space and all on one level, the ochre coloured house includes a well-equipped and sizeable kitchen, which opens out onto a large terrace area – perfect for soaking up the sun and for extended meal times.
The general atmosphere of Casa Querce is overwhelmingly rural, despite the lively town of Pula being only a couple of kilometres away. Less discovered than the North, this region’s real lures are its pristine and uncrowded beaches that punctuate most of the southern coastline.

Amandine Blanchard, Sardinian Places product manager comments:
“Time spent with the family has always been an integral part of Italian life and wherever you go in Sardinia, people will be more than happy to see you with children. There is also a wide range of activities on the island to keep children occupied when the family want a change of scene from the glorious beaches.”

A week at Casa Querce starts from £1,143. This price is for the property for the week and includes a welcome hamper. Sardinian Places predominantly operates bookings on an ‘accommodation-only’ basis because of the number of low-cost airlines offering a flight service to the island.
However, charter and scheduled flights, as well as car hire - which is strongly advised - can be quoted by the tour operator.
Foldable highchairs and travel cots (excluding cot linen) are provided free of charge in Sardinian Places self-catering properties. Baby and child car or booster seats (minimum age 6 months) can also be fitted into the hire cars (cost of £40 for clients of Sardinian Places).

The Family Collection category is highlighted online only.

Ryanair has announced two new bases in Sardinia in Alghero and Cagliari with routes commencing in March 2009. Eight domestic and eleven international routes are being created including Manchester and Edinburgh to Cagliari in the south of the island.

The addition of these low cost flights from the UK to Sardinia come shortly after Jet2.com announced a new service from Manchester to Olbia in the North-East of the Sardinia.

To celebrate the launch of its new Sardinian services, Ryanair is offering 1 million £5 (all inclusive) seats for travel in November, December and January on www.Ryanair.com until midnight Thursday 23rd October. The new services to Sardinia do not commence until March 2009 however.

Villas, apartments, houses, residences and hotels in Sardinia can be booked on an accommodation only basis through Sardinian Places to enable holidaymakers to take full advantage of the low cost airlines servicing the island.

Pope Benedict visited Sardinia in September and stopped off at the basilica of Our Lady of Bonaria in Cagliari to meet some of the centenarians of Sardinia. Residents of the Mediterranean island have amongst the highest rates of longevity in the world.

Amongst the 30 centenarians Pope Benedict met inside the basilica was Antonia Girau, a 106-year-old who greeted the 81-year-old with “I wish you will reach my age, Your Holiness”
Sardinia is known as “The Island of the Centenarians” and has one of the highest rates of people reaching the age of 100 in the world: a rate of about 1.5 people per 10,000 aged over 100 compared to 1 per 10,000 in most other parts of the developed world. The people’s genetic makeup and low-stress agrarian lifestyle are the likely explanations.

Pope Benedict said mass to 150,000 outside the basilica including the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. In contrast, during his visit the pope also addressed 60,000 of the island’s youth, urging them to consider traditional family values rather than the excesses of consumerism.

Sardinian Places releases its new 2009 brochure this week, the first ‘new season’ collection since the Sardinian specialist re-branded itself from Voyages Ilena (to tie in with Serenity Holidays acquisition of the company in Autumn 2007).

The tour operator’s highlights for 2009 include:

Accommodation choice – North East & North West stronghold

Sardinian Places specialises in the North East and North West of the island, offering both self-catering and hotel options. A smaller selection of properties is offered in Central Sardinia and in the South. There is a range of self-catering options, although the Sardinian Places trademark is the detached countryside villa with extensive secluded grounds and swimming pool, within easy drive of the coast and beaches. There are hotels to suit all tastes from the rustic farm hotel, to the more luxury hotel complete with thalasso and spa facilities.

New Property Additions

In total, 15 new self-catering properties have been added to the Sardinian Places’ portfolio. These include Apartment Storico in Alghero, North West Sardinia.

This is the tour operator’s first property in Alghero old town. Exuding charm and character, the two-bedroom apartment is within easy walking distance from a long white-sand beach.

New to the Premium Collection, Lu Triuzzu is an exceptional villa located in Santa Teresina, Costa Smeralda. The three-bedroom house was built by the owner himself around an existing rock, which now forms the centrepiece to this unique hideaway retreat.

Nine new hotels have also been added, including Mandra Edera in Abbasanta, Central Sardinia. Nestling in 30 hectares of Sardinian countryside, this hotel offers a perfect balance of relaxation (swimming pool, Jacuzzi, solarium) with activity (horse-riding, jeep excursions, trekking). Food lovers will not be disappointed, courtesy of the restaurant’s homegrown organic cuisine, as well as the Chef’s authentic cookery classes.

New Property Categorisations: Premium Collection and Family Collection

Sardinian Places continues to use criteria to categorise the level of comfort across its self-catering properties. However, there is a new pinnacle – The Premium Collection. Four properties within the North East of the island, with their spacious, secluded grounds and superior facilities, have been shortlisted for this accolade.

Sardinian Places has also added a Family Collection categorisation onto its website, whereby selected villas or residences not only have a swimming pool, DVD player and microwave, but also come complete with family-friendly extras, such as buckets and spades, beach umbrellas and picnic cool boxes.

Sardinia Touring Holidays & Corsica Twin-Centre Options

As the second largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia provides ample opportunity for exploration. Sardinian Places has marked within its brochure those hotels that are suitable for ‘Touring’ and is happy to discuss tailor made itineraries with its clients.

Corsica and Sardinia are only 11km apart across the Bonifacio Straits, and in collaboration with sister company, Corsican Places, Sardinian Places can book Corsica and Sardinia twin-centre holidays with ease and experience.

Sailing in Sardinia

New for 2009, Sardinian Places will offer sailing holidays around the island on board a Gulet imported from Bodrum. A professional skipper and crew can be on hand and there are options to undertake fishing, snorkeling and diving if desired. The boat can also be chartered by a private group, subject to numbers and experience.

Accommodation-only

Sardinian Places predominantly operates bookings on an ‘accommodation-only’ basis (over 90% of reservations) because of the number of low-cost airlines offering a flight service to the island.

However, charter and scheduled flights, as well as car hire - which is strongly advised - can be quoted by the tour operator.

Sardinian Places product manager, Amandine Blanchard comments:

“We look forward to a strong and successful new season. Sardinia really does have something for everyone and is rich in festivals, adding even more impetus to envelop yourself in the island’s fascinating culture and energy.”

Next season (09), a 7-night holiday with Sardinian Places starts from £269 per person.
This price is based on bed and breakfast accommodation at the character hotel, Agriturismo Tenuta Pilastru (price valid from 02 May – 05 June 09, based on two adults sharing a standard rm).

Sardinian Places is offering a number of Early Booking Offers, valid for 2009 holidays booked by 30 November 2008. These include free car hire upgrades and property discounts of up to £300 per week, valid for selected travel dates in May, June and September 09.

We've found Europe's most popular villas, booked months in advance - plus 20 stunning alternatives to book now

Hot property: Casa Querce, Pula, Southern Sardinia

"Casa Querce is one of the most popular villas in our collection of houses in the south of Sardinia - an area yet to be discovered by the masses, but boasting some of the best beaches on the island," says Amandine Blanchard, Voyages Ilena product manager. "Casa Querce is so sought-after because it offers a haven of tranquility. Set in its own lush spacious grounds with mountainous backdrop, parents can unwind in the hammock or on the sun terrace, whilst children play in the wooded gardens, by the pond or in the private pool. The bustling agricultural and tourist town of Pula with the sandy coastline of Santa Margherita and the Sulcis mountain range, is only 2km away." The villa sleeps four in two bedrooms and costs from £648 for one week

Bookable alternative: Casa Stefania, Pula, Southern Sardinia

"If holidaymakers wanted to stay in Pula and were disappointed Casa Querce was booked up, then we would have no hesitation in recommending Casa Stefania, says Blanchard. "Although Casa Stefania is a three bedroom house and not detached, it still offers a private garden and pool with splendid sea views and walking distance to the beach." The house sleeps six and costs from from £858 for one week.
