There is nothing a mother elephant will not do for her infant, but even she cannot protect it from bullets. Africa elephant population and range have drastically shrunk in large parts due to poaching.

Sarova Hotels, Resorts and Game Lodges, through our Corporate Social Responsibility arm, Sarova Cares Initiative, has joined hands with Elephant Neighbors’ Center (ENC) to create awareness on the value of our wildlife and specifically to raise a voice against poaching.

To this end, Sarova is a key sponsor to the “IVORY BELONGS TO THE ELEPHANT” CAMPAIGN WALK” which was flagged off from Sekenani gate of Maasai Mara on 2^nd May 2013 and will cover a distance of 900 km, from Maasai Mara through Nakuru- Nanyuki- Meru and Nairobi. The walk is a follow up on IVORY BELONGS TO ELEPHANT CAMPAIGN and the COP 16 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meeting held in Thailand on 3- 14 March 2013.

Mr. Jim Nyamu “The Elephant Man”, ENC co-founder with 15 years’ experience of studying elephant in Kenya and Africa, is leading the walk.

The walk - a global appeal to people who care about elephants and conservation - seeks to raise funds to establish and support Community-based Elephant Monitoring Programs (CEMP) in collaboration with the local communities.

Through the Sarova Cares Initiative, Sarova continues to participate in community uplifting projects in the areas of health, education and environmental conservation. We are all aware that we owe it to future generations to conserve our proud legacy and we continue to be appalled at the continued decimation of the continent’s rhino and elephant populations.

This previous Saturday, Sarova Hotels Executive Club hosted an elaborate cook-out for her members at the plush gardens of Sarova Panafric Hotel. Ladies from diverse corporate sectors converged and were taken through the steps of making continental dishes with a main focus on diverse meat cuts. Sarova Panafric Executive Chef- Avraj Marwa demonstrated to the ladies the various steps in making Tandoori Chicken, Pork Spare Ribs, and beef stir fry, various salad options as well as tiramisu for dessert.

Sarova Hotels has been recognized severally for famed culinary offerings as recent as the just concluded Chefs Delight Awards 2013. Knowing the importance of serving good food and sharing the skills with our patrons, Sarova Hotels creates platforms to engage the society and impact knowledge.

Our performance demonstrated that we have set the stage as a premier brand in the hospitality industry.

Kitchens of Sarova lived up to the reputation of offering a premier outside –catered- for experience, having been selected as the official catering unit at the grand State House Luncheon hosted as part of inauguration ceremony for the 4^th President of the Republic of Kenya. There were 3500 invited guests including 11 visiting Heads of State, government delegations from across the world and the creme of public and corporate sectors in Nairobi. All the invited guests were treated to a specially crafted 5 course menu by Sarova Stanley Food and Beverage team. Sarova Stanley, Nairobi’s oldest luxury hotel, has solely catered at presidential banquets for over 5 years.

Sarova Panafric Signs a Sponsorship Deal with Kenya Rugby Union

Sarova Panafric has today signed up a sponsorship deal with Kenya Rugby Football Union ( KRFU), towards the hosting of this year’s Safaricom 7s Rugby tournament to be held 21^st – 23^rd September. The sponsorship worth Kshs 1.5 Million will go towards hospitality at the event as well as accommodation of various teams.

Sarova Panafric has partnered with KRFU over the years in hosting of various rugby events especially the 7s.

Commenting on the partnership, Sarova Panafric’s General Manager, Mr. Anthony Ngunga observed that “There is a natural interdependence between sports and the hospitality industry and as a result Sarova Panafric has gone beyond to exemplify this by supporting local sports and athletes. The integral role of sports in this country’s economic development cannot be over emphasized and it is our hope that various key players in the hospitality industry will get involved in supporting the local sports arena.” He further stated that Sarova Panafric’s sponsorship to Safaricom 7’s is “an opportunity to celebrate the contribution of our sportsmen to our country, as well as to show appreciation to the veterans that crown our country through exciting and meaningful kick-off events.”

Previously known as Safari Sevens, the now Safaricom Sevens, named after the key sponsor Safaricom Limited, is a rugby tourney held in Kenya annually. Founded in 1996, the tourney is run by the Kenya Rugby Union. This three day rugby festival has grown to be Africa’s premier rugby sevens tournament drawing crowds of over 20, 000 people from various regions in Africa and also attracting a variety of international rugby teams, players & coaches.

A Different Face of Northern Kenya

North Eastern province is one of the administrative provinces in Kenya outside of Nairobi. The provincial capital is the town of Garissa. The region is and has historically been primarily inhabited by ethnic Somalis and the Sukuye Oromos.

The first image that pops in our mind when we think of Northern Kenya is an arid, desert like region that is accustomed to droughts, hunger and frequent cattle rustling. There has been a paradigm shift in our expectations with the unveiling of a land that is rich in culture and unique tourism attraction sites.

Northern Kenya is generally classified as ASALS (Arid and Semi Arid Lands) and is home to chalbi desert in Marsabit- a tourist attraction site similar to the Arabian deserts in Dubai and the Middle East. On the other hand, the region hosts a large number of white ranches, animal conservancies, and eco-lodges with their significance and contribution to the community and the environment being quite contentious. They include the Lewa conservancy and safari lodge, Lol-daiga Ltd, Ol-pejeta, Segera Mission, Borana Farm, Ol- jogi Ltd, Lentile lodge, Tasia lodge, Il-Ngwesi lodge (famous now for Prince William’s proposal to his wife Kate Middleton) among many others. It is however prudent to note that the development of eco-tourism in the region has had a lot of positive contribution to the people and the region. There is a lot to fascinate about, ranging from the Kenyatta House Museum, Riftvalley plateaus, Loiyangalani desert museum, Neolithic and late Stone Age sites with fortifications and burial mounds, the singing wells, to the Koobi Fora.

The people of Northern Kenya who include the Maasai, Samburu, Turkana, Rendile, Pokot, Somali, Gabbra, Borana, and Yiaku are nationally and internationally recognized for their beautiful and diverse culture, which they have managed to preserve against the forces of western influence and modernization. This is a great cultural attraction.

Last but definitely not least, Turkana is the region where Kenya’s fist oil was discovered! This makes the region very lucrative for investors and will ultimately give a face lift to a land whose glory has in a long time been marginalized due to its recurrent issues.

So next time you are wondering which part of Kenya you haven’t been to; think of Northern Kenya- a gem that hasn’t been fully exploited.

It indeed is a great moment and day for Sarova Hotels, Resorts & Game Lodges, yet again; Sarova Hotels has held the mantle and flew Kenya’s flag high at the inaugural second East African CSR Awards 2012. We were crowned the winner in the category of “Best Work Place Practice” with our entry “Sarova Health Care Programme”. Our entry highlighted the objective of this project to provide employees of Sarova Hotels with a comprehensive health care programme that promotes the health and wellbeing of our workforce. Our health care programme is aimed at changing the method to employee’s health from a reactive approach to a holistic and proactive approach so as to reduce the prevalence of illness in the organization.

This prestigious VIP awards ceremony, which took place at the HYATT Kilimanjaro Hotel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, once again gave formal recognition of outstanding and world-class CSR initiatives by East African companies. The awards showcased an East African private sector that has succeeded economically, whilst safeguarding environmental and social values. The ceremony was opened by the Honourable Nimrod Mkono M.P., Chairman of Bank M, followed by a speech from Patrick Obath, Director of the EABC and a member of the esteemed judging panel.

As the awards have grown in status over the years, they have come to represent the excellent social and economic progress being demonstrated by East African corporates. The high-level audience included notaries such as the Zambian High Commissioner to Tanzania H.E. Judith Kapijimpanga, H.E Ambassador Filiberto Ceriani Sebregondi from the European Union and senior executives of shortlisted companies including Coca-Cola, Vodacom Tanzania, British American Tobacco, Tullow Oil and Unilever Tea Kenya.

Sarova Hotels has been wining this esteemed award for three consecutive years and this year saw an increase in recognition for its undeterred efforts towards energy conservation across all its properties.

On receiving the awards, Sarova Hotels Managing Director Mr. J.S Vohra said, “These awards confirm our Hotel’s commitment to the highest standards required in the practice of sustainable energy conservation”.

From the pastry table, we bring christmas love to the people.......

Sarova Whitesands Ozone kids club presented a 10 kg cake to the Children for Children Christmas Carols Concert that was held at butterfly pavillion on 11th December 2011. The concert brought together Mombasa local children's homes and orphanages .The theme of event was to encourage our kids to share and give back to the society, and to give the children an opportunity to mingle, share gifts while they out of the homes.

Over the past years, Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa has been buying trees for Christmas, but in an endeavor to support the Green Reforestation, and to avoid cutting down of trees the Regional General Manager , Sarova Hotels; Coast region Mr. Mohammed Hersi , came up with the a great Idea of planting trees that will live on even after Christmas. As seen in the picture are Sarova Whitesands associates planting the Chrismas trees in readiness of the festive season.

Last Friday October 7, 2011, Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa in conjunction with I & M Bank and APDK- Port Reitz Center hosted an elaborate fundraising dinner to help children born with disabilities. The event was a success that saw them raise a total of Ksh. 1,740,099. Sarova Hotels, Resorts & Game Lodges Chairman Mr. G.S Vohra graced the event as the guest of honour.

Life is so busy and most times we spend so much time tending to the needs of others and pampering others that we sometimes neglect to pamper ourselves.

Here are 5 easy and fun ways to pamper yourself and nurture your mind, body and spirit:

1 - Wake up before the others in the house do and flip through a magazine or simply sip on a hot cup of coffee or tea and enjoy a few uninterrupted moments before the day fully begins.

2 - Weather permitting, take a nice walk and just enjoy your surroundings. Take note of all the beauty that is surrounding you.

3 - Take short breaks during your day whether you are a stay at home mom, work at home mom or work outside of the home, try doing something for yourself periodically throughout the day. You can close your eyes and daydream, browse through the paper or simply have a short friendly chat with a friend.

4 - Treat yourself to a manicure, pedicure or even a new hairstyle. We often are so used to treating others that we forget to treat ourselves and forget to let others pamper us.

5 - Take a nice long warm bubble bath. Fill your mind and senses with a nice fragrance and just soak for as long as you can.

It is truly amazing at how pampering yourself will rejuvenate you!

Prof. Wangari Maathai’s Legacy lives on

I don't really know why I care so much. I just have something inside me that tells me that there is a problem, and I have got to do something about it. I think that is what I would call the God in me.

All of us have a God in us, and that God is the spirit that unites all life, everything that is on this planet. It must be this voice that is telling me to do something, and I am sure it's the same voice that is speaking to everybody on this planet - at least everybody who seems to be concerned about the fate of the world, the fate of this planet.

Reading this quote awakens the passion of the late Prof. Wangari Maathai. She spoke for the trees and the environment. Her selfless passion to conserve the environment is one that has inspired the sustainability practice and motto globally and her professed love for nature is a journey Sarova Hotels, Resorts & Game Lodges is honored to be a part of.

On 1^st of January 2005 Prof Maathai visited Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa and planted a tree at the Resort's frontage lush lawns.

There has been global outcry on the need to conserve the environment and promote sustainable business practice. Sarova Hotels, Resorts & Game Lodges have made it a custom to engage guests in tree planting and environmental conservation activities.

The late Prof. Wangari Maathai Signs the guest book at Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa, looking on is the Resort's Regional General Manager, Mr. Mohammed Hersi and the Resorts Management staff.

Globally, many have emulated and followed in the footsteps of the late Prof. Wangari Maathai all focused on conserving the environment. In March 2010, Sarova Hotels, Resorts & Game Lodges also launched the Green Tsavo Reforestation project in an effort to conserve the environment. Sarova Hotels, Resorts & Game Lodges together with Friends of Tsavo and Futouris Group mobilized the community and partners to kickstart a pilot project that was aimed at planting 1 Million trees and this was a dream to see Tsavo become green for the benefit of the eco-system.

In December, 2010, the festive season theme at Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa was “Celebrating the legends of the Ages” and notably the late Prof. Wangari Maathai was amongst the twelve legends celebrated. Her day dubbed “SEEDLINGS FOR CHRISTMAS” was marked by tree planting activities that saw guests plant trees along the Mombasa- Malindi highway and children were also sensitized on the need to embrace and conserve the environment. Sarova Hotels had crowned her a legend; a beacon of hope for environmental sustainability. See below picture.

The Center Piece; an authentic 13 meters pyramid incorporating the faces of the various Legends who were celebrated in the 2009 Festive Season theme dubbed" Christmas- Legends of the Ages. From the top we have the Late Michael Jackson, The three wise men, Cleopatra, Beethoven and the Late Prof. Wangari Maathai.

The late Prof. Wangari Maathai might not be here with us today, but her legacy and drive to see Kenya and the universe at large conserve the environment is one that will live with us forever. As Sarova Hotels, Resorts & Game Lodges, we shall endeavor to carry on the late Prof. Wangari Maathai’s Vision in all areas that we operate.
