So some peeps get a "reaction" to natural deodorants. Nothing like a pit rash to start your day off right :( Many reason why it is or could be happening. BUT DONT GIVE UP! Please read on and try below.The wellness mama did a most excellent post and couldn't of explained or typed it better myself.

Why Armpit Detox?

It occurred to me as I sat researching the sebaceous glands one night with a bentonite clay face mask on that perhaps my face mask was the answer to the armpit question as well.

After all, I’d used bentonite clay to detox my hair before (and use it in my shampoo now) and in natural detox baths and it worked incredibly well… perhaps it would speed up the adjustment period to natural deodorant as well.

Why detox your armpits at all? Why not just keep using regular deodorant and avoid the whole problem? Glad you asked…

Conventional deodorants and anti-perspirants contain a variety of chemicals and additives. It takes something un-natural to block the body’s natural ability to sweat, and the chemical list in some deodorants is impressive:

Aluminum– some evidence links aluminum to cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease
Phthalates– Endocrine disruptors often also found in plastic that can cause hormone imbalance and even infertility (especially in med)
Propylene glycol– common name: antifreeze. It is a hotly debated additive in personal care products but the Environmental Working Group reports that it carries a moderate risk of immunotoxicity and allergies.
Formaldehyde- a known carcinogen… guess it kills the germs though.
Parabens- Another hormone disruptor and parabens have been found in biopsied tissue with breast cancer
Antibacterial Substances- I talked about these before but they are endocrine disruptors and can negatively affect the immune system

Why is this a big deal? Ever gotten sick and had a lump in your neck or armpit? That is a lymph node and they are a major part of your immune system. Putting endocrine disruption chemicals directly on top of them is a great way to screw up your hormones and suppress immune function.

The skin is the body’s largest organ and what touches our skin can easily enter our bloodstream. With skyrocketing rates of breast cancer, it would seem prudent to avoid these chemicals until further research is done.

A great advantage to doing an armpit detox, besides that it helps speed up the natural deodorant adjustment period, is that it might help pull some of these chemicals out of the skin and tissue of the armpits. This can be especially helpful after years of conventional deodorant use.

Does it Work?

I tried it personally and had several friends who hadn’t yet made the switch to natural deodorant try it as well and then switch. Here are the results:

We all noticed less odor, even without wearing any deo afterward
Nobody who tried the detox noticed a rash when using the natural deodorant
All but one person said they noticed less sweat
Everyone said they would recommend it to a friend

Completely un-scientific trial but practically applicable and the results seem promising!

How to Detox Your Arm Pits

Don’t you love when something is so easy that it almost doesn’t need instructions?

You might already have the ingredients on hand. You’ll just need bentonite clay, apple cider vinegar and water.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon bentonite clay
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
1-2 teaspoons of water (to get right consistency)

Instructions

Mix all of the ingredients in a glass bowl (do not use metal!) with a wooden or non-metal spoon until about the consistency of sour cream.
Spread in an even layer over the armpits and allow to sit for 5-20 minutes. I suggest starting slowly and working up to a longer period of time once you see how your body adjust. If it hurts at all, remove immediately.
This may cause some redness as it will increase blood-flow to the area, but it will go away quickly.
Wash off in the shower or with a warm, wet washcloth.
Repeat daily or as needed until under-arm odor goes away and natural deodorant is non-irritating.

Notes

I’ve found that I don’t even need the baking soda in my natural deodorant after doing this.

Additional Things to Try

If you are still struggling with odor or have itching or lumps in your armpits, consider dry brushing, which is said to help improve lymph circulation.

Also, make sure to drink a lot of water any time you stimulate lymph flow (dry brushing, massage, detox, etc) to help flush the body and avoid getting dehydrated.

Why Activated Charcoal Is Hot

Sometimes, in order to get clean, you have to get a little dirty. This is a concept that humanity has known for thousands of years with our long history of mud baths.

But it’s not just about mud anymore. Most recently, the trendy new get-dirty-to-get-clean ingredient is activated charcoal, which has been making its way into skin- and hair-care products, says international brand expert Patrice N. Le Maire.

“In particular, young women – Millennials – have been appreciating the benefits of activated charcoal within the past year or two,” he says. “Now we’re starting to see the ingredient gain ground for women in their 30s, 40s and 50s, as well as men with an active lifestyle, who stand to benefit from a deep and thorough cleansing.”

Activated coal has even made its way into toothpaste. Le Maire, president of Eurochoc Swiss Imports, has most recently partnered with Europe’s Curaprox, (www.curaprox.com), which offers cutting-edge dental wellness products, one of which is called Black Is White. The toothpaste has co-opted activated coal and, as with other beautifying products, is starting to gain ground among the same demographics of the United States.

Le Maire explains why activated charcoal in toothpaste has been a beneficial selling point among Millennials and others.

• It’s natural in two important ways. The activated charcoal whitening toothpaste removes discoloration using activated carbon without abrading or bleaching. Black Is White, which can be used as any other toothpaste, has no SLS, no triclosan and no bleaching agents.

“Many younger folks enjoy the all-natural ingredient; we’ve raised a generation of people who do not like too much artificiality in their products,” he says. “And, they do not like to come off artificial, either. After about a week or two of use, the activated charcoal helps your teeth look a natural white – the color of baby’s teeth – and not the super-bright, artificial white offered by bleaching products, which can damage one’s enamel.”

• Activated charcoal in toothpaste is a novelty for the DIY generation. To a significant extent, Millennials have had a different upbringing from older generations, and they’re motivated by novel and natural systems of getting the job done.

“Many Millennials were brought up in a do-it-yourself mentality,” Le Maire says. “They were the first generation to be raised with access to the internet, a treasure trove of information that explains to people exactly how things work, enabling them to experiment with raw ingredients. Millennials, and many others who enjoy outside-the-box thinking, have learned to appreciate the raw elements of products they use.”

• You can keep your teeth-staining habits. A few decades ago, Americans weren’t the connoisseurs of coffee and wine they are today. The thought of paying more than a dollar or two for a coffee was unheard of.

“Being from France, I didn’t used to have the same kind of access to quality coffee, wine and other food when I’d come to America in the 1980s,” Le Maire says. “That has changed, as we have seen. But these treats come with a price – stained teeth. As many of us know in Europe, however, brushing with activated coal helps to keep your teeth a natural white.”

Two book reviews

SO I finally had some down time to get some serious reading in over Thanksgiving. Driving almost 10 hours one way to Tucson and back. Thank god I had some reading to do! I read "Hunger makes Me a Modern Girl" and attempted to read "Girl in a Band". Carrie Brownstien from my beloved Sleater Kinney killed it. She's funny, hipster, and interesting. All things you would expect from this Portlandia creator. Ms. Kim Gordon on the other hand! I hate to say anything bad about anyone... but in all honesty. She's the epitome of a self involved and self important Los Angeles artist. I found it annoying and boring. I didn't even finish it. I only got half way threw it because I was stuck in a car with no relief, just hoping it would get better. My man friend read both and loved both. Maybe it was my inner turmoil of PNW vs SoCal. Someone else please read it and let me know your thoughts!

Lipstick is very interesting thing don't ya think? Why don't we paint out noses red? Wearing lipstick dates back to the dawn of history. It is thought to aid in reproduction. Woman luring men dates back to 5000 years ago. It is thought to be started with the crushing of stones and fish scales. The Egyptians had some snafu's with the use of iodine. The kiss of death arose many disease's. (Can't blame a girl for tryin'.) Queen Elizabeth really solidified the trend of chalk white faces and blood red lips by the 16th century. She evolved the product using bees wax and plant based make up. Around World War II lipstick became more common for the every day gal to wear. (thank god) At a point in time make up was to be thought of as the devil's work and male trickery. So glad these shameful times are behind us. Viva la lipstick.

As a feminist I just love how lipstick represents so much for woman. Flappers wore dark red lips to show their independence. At the time of male-dominated professions, such as scientific research and engineer's. A woman by the name of Hazel Bishop in the 40's, who created the first kiss proof formula. She was an organic chemist in New Jersey and Brooklyn. For me personally it for sure puts a bounce in my step and also gives me a way to support myself.

Soft cat eye tutorial

Start with a clean eye lid. I always apply an eye primer to lessen eye creases. My favorite cheap one is Elf's shadow lock eyelid primer in sheer.

Swept the shade "thirteen" all over your lid. I used a flat fluffy brush.

Using that same flat fluffy brush sweep the shade "combust" just in the crease.

Take the shade "whisky"and draw a line mid eye to outer corner.

Now you look a little crazy. So get in there with a fluffy brush and windshield wipe back and forth until you are blended and smooth.

take the flat fluffy brush, place the color "high" just on the round center of your lid. Lights up your look ever so slightly.

Now taking your angled brush, get the color "whiskey" (You can use whatever color you like, but I prefer this dark brown vs. a black. tends to be softer.) line your upper and lower lash lines to your liking. Making the wing as big or as small as your comfort level. A tip not to draw the line but you place the brush and re-load shadow as you go. Give more of a clean defined line and lessons fall out.

for the lower lash line I like to smoke out and smudge the line using a short and stubby brush.

I like to finish this look with a strong brow, mascara, light pink blush, and a classic red lip.

These shoes come in an array of styles but I've tried the active walker aka my work out/running errand shoes. Normally a new athletic shoe I need to break in and always have blisters. Didn't happen with these! REJOICE! In the past when I've worn shoe insert's my body is sore the next day. These have arch support and I didn't feel the day after hang over. REJOICE! I've never heard of a shoe helping with bunion support, well now I have. REJOICE! I was a little nervous to wear a leopard shoe, but they are a muted leopard and go with most things. I've gotten so many compliments when wearing them. Tempted to try other styles!

Now that we are full swing into the fall season, our summer tans are noticeably dwindling to a nil. Everyone knows the harms and risks of tanning beds and – let’s be honest – no one is fooling anyone with that carrot-hued spray tan. Q: Tell me a little about yourself! Where are you from? What are your hobbies? Is wall art full time?

A: I'm originally from the UK, but have been living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn for almost six years now. I work in the fashion industry and have been working with the wonderful Betsey Johnson since I moved here as well as working on other projects. Making my wall hangings started out as a hobby - combining my favorite things, colors, textures and shapes to create something that can really change the mood of a room. Once I ran out of wall space in my own apartment I decided to sell them, so I set up and Etsy store so other people could enjoy them too.

Q: How did you get in the wall hanging business?

A: It was an Instagram rabbit hole that led me to discover some amazingly talented textile artists that had rejuvenated the Fiber Art movement and were creating some beautiful pieces that I was instantly drawn to. Being someone that just wants to create, I decided to take a class from Maryanne Moodie who happened to be teaching in Brooklyn. I was instantly obsessed!

Q: Do you have a personal favorite design?

A: They're like children; you have to love them all the same. But for me the bigger the better with lots and lots of texture!

Q: How do you come up with designs? Inspiration?

A: I take inspiration from Navajo designs, architecture, geometric shapes, or even just a beautiful color story from nature inspires me.

Q: Tell me about the yarns you use!

A: The yarns are all obtained from responsible sources and I try and use organic yarn as much as I can. I like the color and texture or hand dyed yarn – it has more character.

Q: Any special instructions on care?

A: It's good to give them a little gentle brush when you first hang them as they can get a bit crumpled in transit. Then occasionally pat them down once in a while to keep them clean.

Q: What is your favorite book to read?

A: I love reading autobiographies, especially from designers and musicians living the NY life in the 70's and 80s. Right now I'm reading Born to Run, it's so inspiring! It makes you believe anything is possible!

Q: Anything in particular you would like to add?

A: I take custom designs too! If you have a room that needs a splash of color or a wall to fill with something beautiful then please email me. The Four Agreements

I really wish I would've read this book in my early 20's BUT better late than never. My favorite agreement is take nothing personally. I know you hear that, but how they explain how nobody else honestly cares THAT much about you makes total sense. So true. Good lesson for me and my sensitive nature. It's a short read, so even if your not a "reader" you should give it a whirl.

Q: Tell me a little about yourself! Where are you from? What are your hobbies? Do you do work with and sell succulent’s full time?

I am originally from Dallas, Texas, but moved to Lake Forest when I was five – so I grew up in the OC. As far as hobbies, I love Pilates, vintage swap meets, baking and of course, flowers, gardening and succulents. I'm like a 50's housewife. I would LOVE to focus on succulent’s full time but right now it’s just a full time hobby!

Q: How did you get in the succulent business?

A: I didn't mean to start a business. I just started doing it for fun and because I have always loved plants. I spent about six months in Texas and I collected all these cool vintage pots and containers from antique shops and road-side flea markets. So when I got home my natural instinct was to plant things in them! My friends suggested I should sell them and started to offer to buy them. That’s when I started taking it more seriously.

Q: Do you have a favorite succulent?

A: favorite? No way. I love them all. It truly is like an addiction. I do look for different or unique ones that you don't see everywhere but each succulent is a favorite in its own right.

Q: How do you come up with arrangements? Inspiration?

A: I either start with a really cool succulent as a center piece and then I add to it to make a visually interesting arrangement. Or, I start with a really cool pot or planter and let it inspire my direction. If I am making arrangements for an event – that will have influence as well. For instance, I made some center piece succulent arrangements for a surf brands trade show booth. I wanted them to have a wavy, underwater, seaweed feel so I added some blue glass stones. It really did turn out beautiful! I think the inspiration comes from loving what you do; there is no real explanation for your passion.

Q: How did you come up with your label/brand/name?

A: Like I mentioned I spent about six months in the South visiting family in the winter time in the woods. I was surrounded by pine trees in an area of East Texas, which the locals call the "Pine Curtain." Honestly, I'm not the outdoor type; anyone that knows me can tell you I am not a camper and I definitely prefer Palms over Pines. It just came to me while I was driving through the country. I missed California. I immediately started the Instagram account (PalmsOverPines) not really knowing what I was going to use it for. At first just posting my little creative projects, furniture refurbs, cross stitches, flower arrangements, etc. Several months later, I realized its true purpose.

Q: Any special instructions or tricks people wouldn’t normally know?

A: There are two secrets to success: #1. Never reveal all that you know… Just kidding! The one question I get asked the most is, "how do I know when to water it?" Usually I say, "when the soil is dry," or about once a week. That's if the succulents are outside in good lighting. If these plants are inside, you can go a little longer because the soil isn't going to dry up as fast. But you have to just pay attention to each plant; you care for it individually like you would any other living organism.

Q: Who was your teenage idol?

A: I honestly don't remember having a teenage idol. Everything I did then (and still do) is/was influenced by music and fashion. I lived and died in high fashion magazines. I would get up super early on Saturday morning and watch a show called "Style, with Elsa Klensch," on BBC and try to steal ideas from top fashion designers and make my own tees and purses. I loved Blondie – her hair and style and careless attitude. I grew up in skateboarding culture and going to punk rock shows, which were huge sources of influence.

Q:Anything in particular you would like to add?

A: Simply that, if you love something you should pursue it, whether on a large or small scale. You have to have something to look forward to each day; if you work hard enough the rest will fall into place. It’s easy to become impatient and lose focus. It took me a long time to realize that. I now have a clear vision and a plan in place and a lot of good stuff is coming!

A: I am Diana Ishimizu, owner of Paradise Metal Art. I was born in Japan but raised in the US. I have lived in Long Beach for nine years. Aside from making jewelry, I also like to paint, go to shows, get tattooed and run. I work as a jeweler and custom fabricator full-time.

Q: How did you get in the jewelry business?

A: I have always been an artist, but I have been making jewelry since I was 14. I learned traditional techniques by Native Americans from Arizona. I decided to major in metal-smithing at El Camino College in Torrance, Ca. and I obtained my BFA from Cal State Long Beach in 3D Media-Metals. I started my business, Paradise Metal Art in the beginning of 2012. I started at Patchwork Festival in Long Beach at an $80 booth and the next year was in the Pool Trade Show/Magic in Las Vegas selling internationally.

Q: Do you have a favorite metal?

A: Silver is my metal of choice, but I also enjoy working with gold.

Q: How do you come up with pieces? What is your inspiration?

A: My inspiration for Paradise Metal Art is West Coast Native American symbolism. I am especially drawn to Zuni artists and in particular the artist, Effie. I enjoy researching iconography and symbolism and Native American culture and incorporating traditional aspects into my contemporary pieces.

Q: How did you come up with your label/brand/name?

A: It was Jorge Luis Borges that said, 'I have always imagined that paradise will be a kind of library.' My paradise has always been jewelry and fabrication.

Q: Any special instructions or tricks people wouldn’t normally know? Storage? Care? Cleaning?

A: A trick to keeping your silver jewelry clean is to wear it a lot. Normal wear keeps the piece from oxidizing as fast. Buying a 'sunshine' cloth at a local bead store will also help clean your pieces without scratching them.

Q: What do you dance to by yourself?

A: Everything! I like a wide variety of music and I have no problems dancing like Elaine to any song.

Pro Tip: Dressing Thrift Without Looking Like a Walking Thrift Store

I’m flattered by the response I’ve received since starting this blog. Thank you, dear readers. Several of you have provided me with suggestions for future posts many of which include advice for thrifting and style. These things come very natural to me (thank you Grandmother Frances) so I don’t typically think too hard about them. In asking me your questions though, I’ve been forced to pause and consider the internal processes I use when shopping for and putting together an outfit. As it turns out there are some basic rules I use for myself that you may also find helpful.

7 Tips for Thrifting Without Looking (or smelling) like a Thrift Store

1. Fit is key. Bodies are different shapes and sizes and that is a beautiful thing! I think most of us know by trying something on if it looks good and feels good. I personally steer clear of tops that are made for bustier ladies and keep a special eye out for high-waisted skirts that hug my hips just right. Your rules for fit could be much different from mine. If you find yourself unsure of an item fitting you well, bring a friend shopping, or just ask a stranger at the store (sometimes they are more honest). 2. Material should be in good shape. Check for fading and stretching. Nothing says, “Hey, I got this at a smelly old thrift store” more than a faded black shirt with a stretched out neckline! Also check for pilling (although there are ways to fix that).

3. Check for stains and holes. Arm pit stains in light-colored shirts are THE WORST (especially if they’re someone else’s pit stains) Often, holes can be fixed but be sure you’re committed to doing so before making the purchase.

4. Smell it. Seriously (especially if it’s vintage). Most of the time you can get the smell out but I’ve bought vintage items that after 10 washes still smell like grandma perfume and moth balls. If it smells heavily of these scents, consider leaving it on the rack.

5. Check that zippers and buttons are all intact. Again, you can often fix these things, but just be prepared to do the work. I once bought a sweater that had 3 missing buttons. I ended up adding 3 fun mismatched buttons to replace them and I get compliments on that jacket all the time.

6. Don’t pay attention to the price tag until AFTER you try it on. (If you shop at Goodwill they have a weekly tag color sale. Ignore this too.) This will encourage you to only try on items that fit the above criteria first rather than talking yourself into something only because it’s extra cheap. This is a Jedi-mind trick, really.

7. Face the truth. Sometimes certain things are just better to buy new. Underwear and socks are obvious. Plain t-shirts and other basics are good to purchase new too. Personally, I buy most of my jeans new, it’s just easier to find the right fit. A few months ago I was desperate to find the perfect little black cardigan. I searched at about 4 different thrift stores before deciding it was better to go to Nordstrom Rack and buy one for $20 (the Rack ALWAYS has cardigans in like 35 different colors!!). Time is money, as they say. And sometimes the ease of not having to hunt for the bargain just makes life easier.

Q: Tell me a little about yourself! Where are you from? What are your hobbies?

A: I am originally from Germany. I now live near Hood Canal in Washington State. My hobbies have always been centered on creation; whether it is drawing, sewing, or gardening.

Q: How did you get into sewing?

A: I got into sewing from my Oma Johanna and my Mom. I started with embroidering handkerchiefs when I was seven years old. Later, I moved on to sewing Barbie clothes, which also introduced me to my love for fashion. After high school I took a two year sewing course at Bates Technical, which was quite in-depth. At that time there were no real artistic schools in Washington. My dream was always to study fashion design in Paris. Ah well, maybe one day!

Q: How do you come up with designs? Inspiration?

A: I like to study all the stuff on the Internet and go with my gut as to what would be liked by my family members.

Q: Any special instructions or tricks people wouldn’t normally know?

A: I think most people don't realize the importance of the old fashioned basting technique. Also, when I sew something for someone, I always start out with the garment about 2 sizes too big and then take it in on the person for a custom fit.

Q: Who was your teenage idol?

A: . Oh how many there were. An oldie was Burt Lancaster. He was young in the 40’s! Paul McCartney for sure, but lesser known is Rick Springfield when he was starting out in ‘65 in England. I lived in Germany during this time and he was as popular as the Beatles back then, he came much later to the states.

Q: Anything in particular you would like to add?

I wish women would realize the impression they make on others by the clothes they wear. I am a child of the 60s and believe in freedom of expression, but I think you could get your point across better if you took the time to wear quality clothes. I do like the wonderful new fabrics available, especially hand painted silkscreen, but have as yet to make anything for anyone out of this fabric.

Q: Where are you from? What are your hobbies? Do you create your beauty products full time?

A: I’m from Fountain Valley and I’m 35, a mom and a wife. I enjoy thrifting with my teen daughter, Ruby, and cuddling up with my son Cruz to watch cartoons. I don’t care for any popular “TV” shows; I’d rather listen to music. I am a hair stylist and makeup artist first, and a natural beauty product developer second.

Q: How did you get in the pit business?

A: I actually was inspired to begin my natural product line by you! Your article for Pastorale Magazine about deodorant spoke to me. The options, and whether we want to be stinky or slather cancer all over our pits. After reading that, I was online reading everything I could about natural skincare, what folks were doing at home, and figuring out how I was going to incorporate that into my daily life.

Q: Do you have a personal favorite scent?

A: My favorite scent is Yazmine Sage. It’s an acquired scent but after making batch after batch of Lemony and Lavender, something different is pretty welcoming.

Q: How do you come up with scents? Inspiration?

A: I typically begin developing scents around the antimicrobial essential oils first, and then adding secondary scents for a more aesthetic aroma. Sometimes I get awesome suggestions from clients, which will inspire me to come up with something new and different.

Q: Tell me about the ingredients you use.

A: I use organic pure essential oils, as well as organic coconut oil; however, the cornstarch and arrowroot powder is not confirmed to be organic. I’ve found some great suppliers, most of which are in Oregon. My long-term goal is to connect with local growers and businesses to make my products in the future.

Q: Any special instructions?

A: I use my wooden spoon to scoop a ball about the size of a nickel and put one under each pit and put my arm down. By the time I’ve applied to both underarms and screwed the lid back on, my body temperature has melted it and it creates a much smoother consistency for spreading with your fingers. Also, should you have sensitive skin, applying Lemony on freshly shaved pits may cause a little burning from the natural citrus oils. It doesn’t happen to everyone, just be cautious if you’re prone to sensitivity.

Q: What is your favorite movie?

A: Any John Hughes film is a win (yeah, original, I know). Tank Girl is a cult classic for me as well as Rocky Horror.
