Where: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, Western Development Museum, Saskatoon
Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: This exercise-based workshop focuses on beyond-the-basics proofreading skills. It offers participants the opportunity to examine excerpts from complex documents and learn how to fine-tune their proofreading eye to catch every error. With documents ranging from recipes to journal articles, participants will be challenged to use their judgement to weigh the pros and cons of making changes, querying authors, or making no changes at all.

Time will be spent discussing the process a proofreader must follow when part of a larger production team, and examples of process checklists from publishers and organizations will be provided.

This workshop will be helpful to anyone wishing to advance their proofreading skills, prepare for job advancement, or study for EAC’s upcoming Proofreading Certification test this fall. Participants should have some proofreading experience and be familiar with conventional mark-up. Course material will be supplied, but participants should bring a current dictionary, pencils and pens, a calculator, and a ruler or other measure that they now use on the job.
Event Description: Substantive editing focuses on “big picture” issues in any document. It considers how to assess the overall organization and content of the material, and then how to reorganize it to present a logical structure that best suits the intended audience. This process includes stylistic concerns to clarify meaning and improve overall flow.

Substantive Editing is a full-day workshop offering hands-on practice by examining various non-fiction content, from trade book excerpts to corporate brochures. Exercises to practise revising outlines, identifying both surplus and missing information, and working with visual material will be used. Emphasis will be placed on the author-editor relationship, and techniques for smoothing language while respecting the writer’s voice will be explored.

This workshop will be helpful to anyone wishing to expand their editorial skills or study for EAC’s Structural Certification test. All course materials will be supplied.

Clear, concise style is the backbone of strong writing. It’s also the product of lots of cold, hard revision. This one-day workshop presents a variety of stylistic techniques to help language do its job. We’ll look at how to create flow, eliminate sloppy shifts and inconsistencies, link ideas through parallelism and subordination, tighten sentence structure, and trim wordiness.
Event Description: Frances Peck, Chair of the Standards Committee, will speak on the topic (Re)Setting the Standards: Canadian English in the Global Electronic Age

It's natural for editors to be concerned about standards. But members of the Editors' Association of Canada (EAC) have been immersed in them for the past two and a half years. That's how long it's taken to revise EAC's professional standards for editors. Frances Peck, chair of the standards committee, will give an insider's view of the revision exercise and will reflect on some of the broader questions it raises: What's happening to the English language? Is the global electronic age pulling standards down? Are editors the last bastion of standards in a sea of language slackers?

Open to all members and friends.
