The Garmin Nuvifone G60 is a GPS device with mobile phone ability; basically it’s a satnav with a phone. One of the main advantages of this new device is you don’t need to download all the maps and it doubles as a hands-free car kit. Garmin and rival TomTom have other hands-free GPS units that let you do this by connecting your Bluetooth phone to the GPS device but none quite as swish as the G60.

With Wi-Fi capability and 5-meg camera the Nuvifone has a very nice geo-location feature that tags photos to let you know exactly where they were snapped. It also features an array of location based services (LBS) technology and a very useful “last position” attribute that navigates you back to a pre-determined point of origin such as you car after a big shopping fest. Other features include a 3.5-inch WVGA resistive touch screen, 3G connectivity, 2.5mm headphone jack and 2GB of expandable internal memory.

Initially rolled out last October in the USA the G60 is set to debut in the UK early 2010, watch this space as they’re predicted to fly off the shelves.

This month singer-song writer Bob Dylan talked about the possibility of becoming the next celebrity “Sat Nav” voice. During his BBC Radio 6 Music Sunday show on the theme of street maps, he publicized that he is in talks with a small number of car manufacturers about becoming the voice of their GPS system. He informed listeners of his progress so far: “I’m talking to a couple of car companies about the possibility of being the voice of their GPS system. I think it would be good if you are looking for directions and you heard my voice saying something like, ‘Left at the next street… No, right… You know what? Just go straight….

It looks like Bob Dylan may be joining a very eclectic bunch that have loaned their voices for Tomtom, Garmin, Navman and an expanding array of the voice-guided navigation systems. Downloadable voices include Kim Cattrall from Sex and the City, Fawlty Towers actor John Cleese’s Basil Fawlty, the unforgettable Victor Meldrew character from One Foot in the Grave and not forgetting Homer Simpson from the world’s favourite cartoon.

The Navman S30 V2 is the enhanced version of the popular V1, the salient difference is the addition of a 3D mapping interface. Instead of putting up mere icons to show points of interest, this model uses realistic 3D representations of landmarks to show exactly where you are; a great innovation for Navman Sat-Nav.

The S30 has a 3.5in touch screen TFT with a 320 x 240 resolution, which is clear and easy to read even in sunny conditions, despite its small size. The S30 is perfect device for those who want inclusive navigation at an affordable price, and includes 8-digit postcode search, places of interest, voice-guidance and comprehensive maps of GB and Ireland.
