setsubun event in London

Setsubun is the day before beginning of the spring on the ancient calendar in Japan. It means "division of season" but this is usually refers to the Spring.
This Setsubun was influenced from China in 8th Century.

So, this Setsubun has long history in Japanese culture, but depending on the different region, the way of celebrating is different from each other.
However, every region has same custom which is we thrown roasted soy beans either out the door or at a member of the family wearing an Oni(demon) mask, and we say "Demons out, Luck in!"
Then after that, we eat roasted soybeans as one for each year of one's life.

When I was a kid, I love eating roasted soy beans on Setsubun. Even though, I should have eaten same number of beans as my age, I ate so much more than my actual age, and I felt I am being so cheeky.

When we were little, we always make Oni masks at the nursery or school. And the Setsubun day actually comes, it could turn hell nightmare for youngers.

The teacher dressed as Demons, which is usually red, blue, yellow or green demon costumes with massive spiky stone pestle (it not real stone. Obviously), and big shoes, loud voice, walking stumpy in the room and just so big and loud! So most of the kids were run to the teacher and cry or at least hide from the demons. But only brave boys and some girls would thrown the beans towards those Demons and try to war off. I was one of the brave one as well as hiding behind teacher. I still remember the demons were so loud and tall, my knee were shaking so much.

Also at home, we do thrown beans.
My mum were shouting so loudly while throwing the beans and I felt embarrassing.. After you finish the beans throwing, you'll have to pick up all beans from the floor. Sometimes you will find remaining beans 6 months later though.. haha.

節分と言えば、日本では子供も大人も楽しめる季節のイベントですね。
節分とは、そもそも春の始まりをお祝いする季節のイベントです。中国から8世紀頃に日本へと伝わったとされる、とても長い歴史のある行事なのです。
その長い年月をかけ、日本全国へ広まったのですが、地域により独特の違いが有るとてもユニークな行事とも言えるのではないでしょうか。

今でも小学校や保育園、幼稚園ではお祝いすると思いますが、私が子供の頃も保育園では鬼のお面を作ったりして楽しみました。
しかし、いざ節分の日に先生が扮装した鬼が表れると、ある子供は泣きじゃくりながら先生の陰に隠れたり、ある子は泣かなくてもやっぱり怖くて先生の近くで座り込んでいたり、またはとても勇敢な男の子や女の子達は、豆を思いっきり投げつけて鬼退治をしてくれたりと、それはそれはにぎやかだった事を今でも覚えています。
私はと言うと、鬼に豆を投げつけた事も有り、また先生の近くで隠れていた事も有り、な感じでした。鬼が大きくて、うるさくて、怖くて膝がいつまでもガクガクしていた事は今でも覚えています。

また、家で豆まきをする際、母の、「鬼は外ー!　福は内ー!」のかけ声が余りにも大きくて、ちょっと恥ずかしいなんて思った時期も有りました。。

さてさて、私の節分のお話はここまでで、この節分をロンドンでもちょっと意識してみたいなと思い、テングサケのオリバーと、私がホストを勤めさせて頂きます、日本酒とお食事のイベントが、SohoにあるShackfuyuで開催されます。

It was my first sake seminar held at Sozai Cooking School.

Sozai Cooking School provides varieties of event, such as Kazari maki, Ramen Sushi .. eand so much more.
I have my own traning ideas, but to find venue is always the difficult one. So I have got introduced by somebody who I know to this wonderful venue.
Since they have good experience organising a lots of event, I was so relaxed to prepare. (which is not always happen to me..)

さてさて、今回のSozai Cooking Schoolで開催された日本酒のイベントは、私にとってはSozai Cooking School で初めて担当させて頂いたイベントでした。セミナーやイベント、そしてトレーニングのアイディア等は、もう次から次へと湧き出て来る程あるのですが、何が難しいかと言うと、場所の確保。
そこで、知人を通してこちらのvenueをご紹介頂いたのです。
そもそも、Sozai Cooking Schoolでは数々のイベントを主催しており、もう、イベントをオーガナイズする事に掛けては、皆さんプロ。
そのお陰もあって、私はとてもリラックスしてイベントに望む事が出来ました。

I have explained about basic knowledge of sake, such as ingredients, making process, classifications and special about sake.
Even though I didn't use my slide presentation, I manage to show few pictures of sake making, and talked so much about sake. The samples we have chose, it was really unique products.

The selection of sake is quite simple.
I thought many of guests doesn't know much about Umeshu, so I wanted to share the health benefit of drinking Umeshu, and how to drink them.

今回のイベントでは、日本酒の基礎知識、日本酒を造る為に必要な材料、製法、カテゴリー、そして日本酒って凄いというポイントも幾つかご案内しました。
当日、スライドを使えずにセミナーを進めたのですが、それでも何枚かは写真を見て頂けたり、それよりも、かなり色々とお話しする事が出来たので、良かったなと思っています。

そして、今回試飲用に選んだのがこちらの商品。。

今回は、初回と言う事もあり、日本酒のセレクションを出来るだけシンプルにしました。
そして、梅酒も今回はご紹介したいと思い、これも一番ベーシックな物を用意。梅酒は健康効果に優れていて、とても色々な飲み方が楽しめる事をお話ししたいと思ったので、今回は梅酒もセレクションに入れました。

We have tried all sake with beautifully prepared small dishes, such as Extra matured cheddar cheese, Duck+Orange pate, Pan fried scallops, Yakitori, Edamame, Onigiri..
And in the end of the session, guests purchased some sake to take home, so I think it was really good event.

今回日本酒と一緒に試飲をしたのは、とても奇麗に準備してくださったおつまみの数々。
エクストラマチュアーのチェダーチーズ、鴨とオレンジのパテ、シンプルで、美味しかったホタテ焼き、焼き鳥、枝豆…
そして最後にはイベントで使用したお酒の購入も可能だったので、皆さん、気に入ったお酒をご購入されてお帰りになりました。予定していた一時間を過ぎてしまいましたが、とても内容の濃いイベントだったのではと思います。

I love reading about Japanese history. If possible, I would love to study Japanese history and get Ph.D.

So, learning Japanese history is one of my passion as well as sake. There are so much fascinating stories and I wanted to organise a sake event to share some of my knowledge, about sake and history.

My mysterious themed sake event was held at Yashin Ocean House on 9th September, the day of Choyo no Sekku (Chrysanthemum festival).
Used to be 9th September was really important day, however the custom of this celebration has collapsed in Meiji Era.

私は日本史が大好きです。
もし可能なら、今からでも日本史を勉強して博士号(があるなら)をとりたいとも本気で思っています。

歴史を読んだり勉強したりする事は、私にとって日本酒と天秤にかけてもどちも勝る事が無い程、同等に興味にある事なのです。
そこで、私の知識を少し、日本酒の会と合致させたイベントをやりたいと思い、9月9日の重陽の節句に、日本酒の会を主催しました。

この、9月9日はその昔はとっても大事な節句の一つだったのですが、残念な事に明治時代辺りからその文化はだんだんと姿を消して行く事になってしまいました。

この、ちょっと聞き慣れないミステリアスなイベントにご協力頂いたのは、Yashin Ocean Houseさんでした。

Luckily I have worked in Japanese restaurant when I was worked in Park Hyatt Tokyo, and learned so much about Japanese culture, traditional Japanese cuisine, and sake. So, I had really good ideas and knowledge of this celebration.

Yashin Ocean House had prepare wonderful tasting menu for the special event.

幸運な事に、過去Park Hyatt Tokyoに勤務していた際、日本料理のレストランで日本文化、日本食、器とそして日本酒を学ぶ事が出来たので、今回イベントを主催するにあたっては、はっきりとしたアイディアとプランがありました。

Yashin Ocean Houseの皆さんのご協力のお陰もあり、本当に素晴らしいお料理の数々をご用意頂きました。

Starter was so simple yet, every single bite has got jucy umami... We tried this dish with

コースの始めに頂いたのは、八寸でした。
シンプルではありますが、旨味がジュワッと詰まっていて、一口一口本当に美味しく頂きました。
このお料理と一緒に頂いたのは、真澄七號純米大吟醸。

Then, we had this gorgeously presented sashimi. The steam were scented of yuzu citrus... it was really pretty and smells amazing.
The sake we tried with sashimi was...

そして、こちらはとってもゴージャスな盛りつけのお刺身です。
ホワーンと広がるこのスチームには、ゆずの香りがついていて、優しいゆずの香りで癒されました。
この、お刺身の盛り合わせと一緒に頂いたのが出羽桜純米吟醸です。
色々な工夫がされていて、本当に美味しく頂きました。

This is the simmered pumpkin with sweet corn sauce. It was very unique texture but taste of the Autumn. The sake was

そして炊き合わせ、のお料理がカボチャの含め煮。トウモロコシのとろんとした餡がかかっていました。
とてもユニークな食感でしたが、秋を感じさせるお料理でした。
一緒に頂いたお酒は、白壁蔵、キモト純米。

そして焼き物のフォアグラと優しい風味の梅ソース。
こちらは、 Mon Mumeと言うちょっとユニークな梅酒と一緒に頂きました。

In the end, we had selections of Sushi, with homemade gari.

そして最後に頂いたのは、お鮨と自家製のガリ。やっぱりお鮨はおいしかったです。
こちらは、秋田県のあらたま特別純米のお酒と一緒に頂きました。

Then finished with fresh icecream with Japanese green tea.

そして〆はさっぱりしたアイスクリームと、緑茶でとてもホッとした瞬間でした。

It was just wonderful, fun and tasty night.
All about was Choyo no Sekku and seasonal dishes. Every dishes were so sophisticated and elegant... I loved the whole experience at Yashin Ocean House.
The restaurant became quite busy in the evening, but Raku san the Manger of the Ocean House and Chef Yasushi san, and all staffs has provided wonderful service and dishes. Truly great experience.

I can not wait to return to the restaurant again.

今回は勉強と言うよりは、日本文化に触れると言う感じではありましたが、限られた時間の中で満足いく会になったと思っています。
お料理もとても美味しかったし、楽しく、あっという間に時が過ぎてしまいました。
今回は全てが重陽の節句について、そして季節感を全面に出して頂いたお料理でした。一品一品がとてもエレガントで、私にとっても素敵な経験になりました。
レストランがとても忙しくなってしまい、きっと私達のイベントのお料理を準備するのにも大変だったとは思うのですが、そこは流石、マネージャーの楽さんやシェフのヤスシさんの率いるチームのお陰で何事も無く、楽しく過ごす事が出来ました。

また、Yashin Ocean Houseでお食事を頂く事が、もう待ちきれない程です。

今回のイベント開催にあたり、Yashin Ocean Houseの皆様、World Sake Importsさん、そして Tazaki Foodsさんには特にご協力頂きました事、ここに改めて御礼申し上げます。

In this event, we are celebrating Japanese ancient autmn event called "Choyo no Sekku", colaborating with Yashin Ocean House Restaurant in South Kensington.
Choyo no Sekku is very historical and sophisticated seasonal event, became popular in Heian era(794-). We would like to bring back the tradition and elegance to our sake event.

sake event vol 17: "a midsummer night's dream", report

Hello hello.
It's been raining for all day today. We haven't seen this much rain for a little while, in London. I can not believe how temperature drops from 30° in few days ago and today..18° . I was wearing summer dress yesterday and now, I want to have a hot chocolate and big thick winter socks...

Anyway, I would like to share a lovely sake evening at Medlar restaurant in last month. (sorry.. i know its little late..)

Medlar restaurant is stands on King's Road, owned by two talented people Joe and David. They used to work great top restaurant in UK then they've opened Medlar in 2011 (←on my birthday!!). Since then, they've been satisfying many taste buds.

So, I've been introduced by Elyse from Japan Gourmet to this lovely restaurant. I used to live not too far from there but I've never been there before our first meeting.
As soon as I entered the private dining room, the wall size SW map will welcomed me. I just loved the atmosphere. Middle of the busy Kings road (a bit off from the busiest area but still) yet, so quiet and calm.
So we've decided to have a sake event with Medlar restaurant.

It was a big challenge for me and Elyse to match with Japanese sake and dishes in Medlar. As "French food with global influence" concept dishes, variety of flavour and textures were just out of my imagination.

But we've came up to match with four types of sake with four course tasting menu.

今日は一日中雨でしたね。こんなに一日中ずーっと雨が降り続けたのも久しぶりではないでしょうか。
寒暖の差がここまで激しいのも、体調管理が大変ですよね。つい先日は30°近い猛暑だったのに、今日はもう18°。昨日サマードレスを着ていた私は、今日はセーターに、ホットチョコレート、そして冬用の分厚い靴下、と行きたいところでした。

それはそうと、大分遅くなりましたが、先月主催したMedlar restaurantでの第17回日本酒の会のレポートです。

Medlar restaurantは、チェルシーの中心を通る、キングスロードにあります。それぞれミシュランスターを保持するトップレストランで腕を磨いたJoeとDavidは、2011年にMedlar restaurantをオープンしました。(しかも私の誕生日に!　え?どうでも良い。。?)

このレストランを紹介してくれたのは、日本酒ディストリビューターJapan Gourmet　のElyseでした。以前、この近辺からそれほど遠く無い所に住んでいたにも拘らず、このレストランには足を運んだ事がありませんでした。個室に通してもらうと、壁一面に広がる郵便番号“SW”の地図が出迎えてくれました。雰囲気は外の喧噪とは打って変わって、とても静かで、穏やかな雰囲気。直ぐに、気に入ってしまいました。
そんな経緯で、ここで日本酒の会を主催する事に決めました。

Medlar restaurantは、"French food with global influence"というのが料理のスタイルなだけに、本当に私達にとっても大きな挑戦でした。味は勿論、香り、食感、全てが私の予想を遥かに超えていました。

しかし、試飲と試食を繰り返し、4コースのメニューに合う４種類の商品を厳選。

First course

Gazpacho with scallop tartare, fresh almonds and cherry
with Ikekame Turtle Blue, Ginjo

ガスパチョとホタテのタルタル、アーモンドとサクランボ

そして日本酒は、池亀吟醸

I must say, this was the real "wow factor". Absolutely sensational beautiful marriage with gazpacho, cherry and scallops.. Nothing falling off, it was perfect matching.

言わせて頂くと、これはかなりのヒットでした。ガスパチョって、トマトだけではなく、パン、タマネギ、その他夏野菜が入ったさっぱりだけれど日本酒と合わせるにはかなり高度な料理でしたが、もう、全てが完璧でした。

参加者の方々も、もう既にびっくりのご様子。

Second course

Salad of confit quail legs, iberico ham, sairass ricotta, baby green peaches and pea flowers

with Nanbu bijin Ume Rose, no sugar added plum sake

ウズラのコンフィサラダ、イベリコハム、sairassリコッタチーズ、ベイビーピーチとエンドウの花

そして日本酒は、南部美人糖類無添加梅酒

The dry and very elegant Ume rose and gentle sweetness of this dish was complement each other SO well.

甘過ぎない、かなりエレガントな南部美人の梅酒と、ほのかな甘さの広がる料理との相性は、抜群でした。

Third course

Roast skate with palourde clams, girolles, baba artichokes, fennel puree and sea aster

with with Katsuyama "En", Tokubetsu Junmai

エイのロースト、あさり、アンズ茸、フェンネルのピューレとアスター

一緒に頂いた日本酒は、勝山“縁” 特別純米

This dish has a lot of sea flavour. But the aromatic modern Junmai, Ktsuyama "En" was just blends very very well.

この料理は、もう全てが海の香り。それでも、香り高いモダンな勝山の純米ともとても良い相性でした。

Fourth course

English strawberries with Prosecco jelly, mint and lime granita, strawberry sorbet and meringues

with Ninki Ichi Sparkling, Junmai Ginjo

国産イチゴとプロセッコのゼリー寄せ、ミントとライムのグラニテ、イチゴシャーベットとメレンゲ

そして最後の日本酒は、人気一のスパークリング純米吟醸でした

It was fresh, light, elegant and so summery... Both sake and dessert had same concept and it didn't go wrong. They were made for each other!

夏らしいさっぱりエレガントなデザートでした。人気一のスパークリングと、このデザートが、正に同じコンセプト(?)と思う程でした。

赤い糸で結ばれた感じ。。(キャ−!)

We had wonderful evening at Medlar, served by super happy and passionate staffs.

It was definitely "a midsummer nights' dream", and one of the best sake matching of all.

Million thanks to Medlar's staffs, David, Joe, Amy and super talented(another one?! I know, there is so many talented people works at there..) Clemen the Head sommelier also helped me so much.

And off course Elyse, who worked with me by side to make this event wonderful.

Thanks to all and I hope we can do another sake tasting challenge together!

そんなこんなで、本当に美味しくて素敵な夜を過ごしました。正に、真夏の夜の夢。スタッフの方々も皆さん超ハッピーで、明るく情熱的な方々ばかり。

今まで経験した日本酒と料理のテイスティングの中でも、かなり良い満足のいくマッチングでした。

Sake event vol 16, report

It was sunny monday, I've arranged a sake event vol 16.

I was really happy to held this time's sake event at the new Vietnamese restaurant in Soho, called the House of Ho. As soon as you enter the room, the whiff of the sweet spices would cover you. It is encoraging my appetite...

So, the theme of the sake event today, is "water".
Do you know what % of the water is pure(unsalt) in the world? And what kind of water are they?
So I've talked about the diffferent types of water, benefit of hardwater and soft water, if you make sake with those different water, what would happen to sake? etc.

We had 6 samples to taste, which provided by Tazaki Foods, World Sake Import and JFC.

2. Wakatake Onigoroshi Junmai Ginjo
3. Koshi no Kanbai "Muku" Junmai Ginjo
4. Kamoizumi Shusen Junmai Ginjo

快晴のロンドン。一昨日の月曜日に第16回日本酒の会を主催しました。

今回お世話になったのは、SOHOにある、ヴェトナム料理のthe House of Ho。
店内に入るや否や、温かいスパイスの香りで、全身がほっと包まれる感覚。食欲をかき立てます。

今回のテーマは水について。
世界の何%が純水(塩水でない)?、純水ってどんな水?等の言う質問から始まり、水にも種類が有ると言う事、硬水と軟水それぞれがもたらす恩恵って?
また、この水で日本酒を仕込んだらどうなるの?と言う事を簡単にですがお話しました。

そして今回、サンプルに選んだ日本酒は。

Also we had two water samples to blind taste.
Those water are very well known brands and easy to find in the any stores...
So Sample A and sample B, which water content more mineral to the other?? to this question, most of the guests guessed correct. Sample A was Fiji water from Volcanic Fiji Island and Sample B was Evian from France, Evian content more minerals than Fiji, so Evian is harder water to Fiji.
When I've announced the brand names, some of the guests were really surpprised with the answer.

2種類の水のサンプルも有り、これはブラインドテイスティングをしました。
この2種類のサンプルは、何処でも購入可能なミネラルウォーターです。AとB、どちらが硬水でしょうかと言う質問でしたが、これは殆どの人が正解しました。
サンプルAはフィジー島のFiji、そしてサンプルBはフランスのエヴィアンでした。比べて飲んでみると、違いは明らか。エヴィアンの方が多くのミネラルを含有する、硬水です。

Depending on the enviroment, water hardness are massively different.

So offcourse, water is really crucial for sake making.
Sake made with hard water, they usualy have feminin caracter, and sake brewed with hard water tend to become musculine style. Off course, it could change depending on the rice, yeast, diet in the region etc.

After taste 6 sample sake, we've started to dig in to the lovely dishes.
They were all fresh, a lot of vegetable and full of flavour... It was really good with sake, especially Kamoizumi Shusen!!

地域によって、硬度を含む水の質は様々です。
その水によって、仕込まれた日本酒の個性が変わるのは言う間でもありません。というのも約80%の日本酒の材料は水だからです。硬水で仕込まれた日本酒は、比較的どっしり硬い、いわば男らしい酒に、そして軟水で仕込まれた日本酒は、優しい女性らしい酒になります。
ただ、これも造りや材料、そしてその地域の特色等も背景に入れると、一概に仕込み水のみで、必ずこんな特徴になるとは言い切れないのが難しい所ですが。

６種類の日本酒を試飲した後は、目の前に広がる美味しいお料理に皆、舌鼓をうちました。ヴェトナム料理ってやっぱりお野菜が豊富でバラエティーに富んだスパイスが、本当に美味しく、日本酒ともぴったりでした。
特に、広島の賀茂泉　朱泉とはとても良く合ました。

Have you ever heard about BODAIMOTO??

When I've discovered this, I found it is fascinated.

Moto is a yeast starter to be able to ferment sake.

Well, this BODAI MOTO is a very old method of making sake and the history is back to the Nara era (710-794).

In this era, many monks in the temple were brewing sake as they have exemption to pay any tax. Off course temples after temples started to brewing sake (I would!) and it's became very large number of temples involved sake making.

The temple called SEIRYAKU JI were stands next to BODAI IZUMI(fountain in Japanese) in Nara prefecture. This Seiryaku Ji use the natural spring water from Bodai Izumi, we believes this is the origin of the name of BODAI MOTO.

Then many monks started to using same method as Seiryaku Ji, so probably you can guess, this is the beginning of Moto brewing.

Bodai Moto also known as Mizu Moto (water moto), basically add some steamed rice and uncooked rice into water then wait for lactic acid and natural yeast to grow in the water. The water became sour (acid) after few days, so this used for brewing sake.

The uncooked rice will be taken out and steamed, transfer to the main tank to brew with Koji and other materials.

Isn't it amazing?? how the monks find out this brewing method in such a old time. The equipment were not advanced yet and I'm sure so many times they failed to brew, as the Moto caught bacteria.

Actually this process were disappeared from the industry once but in 1999 Bodai moto were reintroduced.

菩提酛(ぼだいもと)って聞いた事ありますか？

私が初めて菩提酛を耳にした時は、本当に感動しました。

そもそも酛と言うのは、優良酵母を培養させ、後に水、米、麹蒸し米と混ぜ、そしてもろみとして発酵させる酒造りには欠かせないものです。

この菩提酛の歴史はとても古く、実は奈良時代(710−794)まで遡ります。

この時代、世間で酒造りを担っていたのはお寺のお坊さん方。お酒を造る事で、免税を許可されたため、次第に何処のお寺も日本酒を仕込む様になりました。(私も、賛同します!)　そして、多くのお寺で日本酒造りが行われていたそうです。

奈良県にある、正暦寺と言うお寺のそばには菩提泉と言う泉があります。この正歴寺では、昔この泉の水を使って日本酒を醸していた事から、菩提酛の名前の由来がこの泉であるのでは、と言う見解が最も有力な様です。

菩提酛は、別名水酛とも呼ばれる事があります。

これは、火を通していない生のお米と、蒸したお米を水の中に入れ、天然の乳酸菌と酵母がその水に住み着くまで待つ、と言う製法です。何日か経つとこの水が酸っぱくなり、乳酸菌が上手く繁殖した事になります。そしてこの水を使って日本酒を醸したのです。

この酛を作る時に使用した生のお米はこの後蒸して、日本酒を造る際に使用されます。

その昔、酒造に使用する機器が今日の様に、そろっていなかった当時お寺のお坊さん方がこのような製法で日本酒を造る事を導入したなんて、こんな話を聞いているだけで、とても驚きではありませんか?　なんだかロマンさえ感じます。。

恐らく、大気中の悪い細菌が繁殖したり、時には失敗も何度もあったかもしれません。

この製法は、一時期業界から姿を消したそうです。しかし、1999年にまた呼び起こされ、そして現在でも菩提酛の日本酒を醸していらっしゃる蔵元さんは何件かあります。

Hi!
Hugo and I, we've arrived in Tokyo!

It was Hugo's first longest flight(12hrs), and Thomas was not flying with us... I was very worried about everything. But actually so many people helped me, understood us.
I've been reserched "how to survive in long flight with your toddlers" on internet for a quite while, and I was so prepared of worst of the worst. But just couple of times Hugo was cry really loud but it didn't last long. Phew!!

So this is the tools I took for this long flight...
Kindle fire with down loaded a lot of kids programs (but it was not charged... my hart pounded.)

His usual book that I read before he goes to bed everynight

One of my friend recomended to wrap a lot of toys and sweets, then when the kids behave well for 30 min, 1hr whatever that is, you can give one wrap of the treat to the kids as a reward. I thought this is great idea, but Hugo is too young for that so I didn't try in this time.

We both slept for 3 hrs during the 12hrs flight. But somehow, I felt it was faster than I ever thought.
We are suffering jet lag. Waking up in the middle of the night then nodding our heads in the middle of the day, but so far we are enjoying!
Japan is facing rare massive cold wave that go through on top of the Japan once in several years. So it is cold in here. But I am so exciting to discover the town after 2 years stay apart.

やっと日本に帰ってきました。
息子と二人、先日成田に到着しました。

ヒュウゴにとって12時間の長距離フライトは初めて、そして私はトーマスの居ない飛行は初めての経験。もう何もかもが心配でした。
が、皆さん本当に親切にしてくださって、色々な方に助けられて帰って来れました。
出発前から、もう長距離フライトの事を考えただけで心配で心配で、インターネットで"幼児との長距離フライトをサバイバルするには"をリサーチをしていたので、最悪の最悪な状況は大分覚悟していました。
でも、ヒュウゴが大泣きしたのは2回位、それも以外と直に泣き止んだので最悪は免れました。ホっ!!

色々な方の経験談をもとに、今回のフライトで私が持ち込んだ物。
Kindle fire(子供用の番組をダウンロードして、しっかり準備して行ったのも関わらず、まさかの充電切れ!!心臓が止まるかと思いました…)

友人がおもちゃやお菓子を一つ一つラッピングして、30分や1時間、いい子に出来たらご褒美に一つ子供にあげる、と言う案を提案してくれましたが、ヒュウゴにはまだちょっと早いかなと思ったので今回は断念。でも、凄く良い考えですよね!

私もヒュウゴも機内で寝たのは3時間程。
それでも想像以上にあっという間のフライトでした。
今は2人そろってジェットラグ。夜中にぱちりと目が冴え、日中は頭がこっくりこっくりする程の睡魔。それでも、久しぶりの日本、楽しんでいます。
日本は今、数年に一度の大寒波が日本海側や東北を中心に深刻になっています。
私も、ロンドンの方が寒いと思っていただけに、正直びっくりする程の寒さ。でも、2年ぶりの日本、楽しみまーす!!

This is the news for sake lovers.
I'll be organising sake event vol 14., as following schedule.
The theme will be the "sake and beef".

The sun is out, sky is crystal blue... this is the time of the year to enjoy BBQ!!
It won't be BBQ and sake tasting, but I'll introduce some interesting selections of sake that goes well with beef. (no fish and vegetarian menus are available... sorry.)

Happy New Year everyone!!

Do you have any resolution? I don't have any resolution for couple of years. But I want to enjoy more in this year. Enjoy everything! My son, life in London, my friends, cook and work.

My New Year's Eve were very quiet.

As Thomas was working and Hugo was sleeping (he is whistling while sleeps! so funny.), so I ate Toshikoshi soba before the mid night and watched fireworks on TV.

Toshikoshi soba is buckwheat noodle that eaten on the new year's eve in Japan. Buckwheat noodle is break easily, so it means break this year's (going to be past in next day) calamity or misfortune.

When I was watching fireworks, I really miss Japanese new year's ceremony.

Japanese New Year's eve/ New Year's day are so spiritual and purifying compare to western New Year's event.

There is no fire works, no go out and get drunk like here in London.

My parents are not Buddhist, but every year they took me to Shrine in the evening of New Year's eve, then have a cup of hot Amazake (types of sweetened sake without alcohol) and listen to Buddhist sutra and pray.

Next morning, go to another Shrine and bring all last year's amulet and charms from home to burn them. And again pray for new year's health and happiness.

When we return to home, eat New Year's dishes called Osechi. Then read greeting cards that arrived from friends and family on the day. Every single ingredient Osechi has meaning and recipe are usually passed from mother's. (unfortunately little by little those tradition are disappearing today)

Off course the sales starts in many stores. Usually new year's day is biggest shopping rush and most of the stores are open.

But my usual new year's are very simple, quiet, happy and warm. Since I started to work in the restaurant at 16, I have not spend one new year's together with my parents...

Year in Review 2013 from Oh Happy Day

皆さん、新年あけましておめでとうございます。
新年の抱負は決まっていますか?
私はかれこれ数年、抱負は決めない方針で来ています。今年も同じですが、今年は昨年よりも、もっと楽しみたいです。
息子も、ロンドンの生活も、友人達やお料理、そしてもちろん仕事もです。

私の新年はとっても静かでした。
トーマスは仕事だったのと、ヒュウゴはぐっすり眠っていたので、一人で年越しそばを食べ、テレビで花火を見ました。
やっぱりこの花火は凄いですね。隅田川の花火も凄いと自信を持っていましたが、こちらのはもうドカドカ、どんちゃん騒ぎです。日本のは、ドッカーン☆で、おー!(拍手)って言う感じですけど、こちらはだいぶ派手です。
でも、やっぱりこの花火を見ると、ロンドンサイコー!って思うのは私だけでしょうか…。

そんな新年でしたが、今年は日本の大晦日/お正月が恋しくてたまりませんでした。
私の両親は無信教ですが、大晦日は毎年神社にお参りに行き、お坊さんのお経を聞きます。そして翌日はお札を持ってまた別の神社に出向き、お参りをして新しいお札を持って家路に着きます。大晦日は子供の私が唯一遅くに起きていられる特別な日で、それだけで本当にわくわくしたのを思い出します。
家に着き、おせちを食べて届いた年賀状を読み、とにかくゆっくりするのが私の実家式。こちらのように、花火でどんちゃん騒ぎ、飲みに行ってどんちゃん騒ぎ、帰りの電車で(大晦日のみ、電車は24時間運行しています)グデグデに酔っぱらって家に帰り、後は寝て過ごす、みたいなのは日本では見た事無いなぁ。

1日から出勤だった私は、朝の電車に乗り込んでくる酔っぱらった若者達に相当迷惑しましたが。

あのしっとりした日本のお正月、飲食業に勤めるようになった16歳の時以来、家族と一緒に過ごした経験の無い私。さすがに日本の正月が恋しくなって来た。
来年は頑張って帰ろうかな。

It's been a while since I updated my blog.

Well, my return to work was fine.

However, in same week Hugo got bad tonsillitis. We've experienced his first fever, no appetite, coughing, blocked nose, vomit ...etc etc... It was so hard to see this such a little person suffering pain and fever.

Then week later, I've got his virus.

I was so ill for nearly 2 weeks. Temperature never go down and terrible cough like everybody has in this winter... It is so difficult to recover from flue when you have kids. I really thought so.

Then when I recovered, Hugo got another tonsillitis just before Christmas... ;-(

What intense 4 weeks I've been through.

But all ok now.

Now I truly think, all moms in the world they are my heroes. Seriously, mom is the strongest person on the earth.

I've looked back my 2013's posts on this blog.

It was definitely not easy year. I've suffer a lot, mentally and physically. But I've got most wonderful gift ever in my life. I'm very very blessed to have my little Hugo with me.

He will be 9 months old within 3 days.

He's crawling now and fourth tooth is nearly coming out. He is very happy, always giggling, smiling, loves eating and relaxed baby. I'm so in love with him.

Well, I'd like to thank to all my friends, colleagues and everybody who is following my blog.

Without your support, I really can not imagine how I could have been through this year.

Really really, from bottom of my heart, Thank you so much.

ご無沙汰しております。

職場復帰してから、すっかりパソコンから遠のいてしまいました。

無事に仕事にも慣れ(思い出し?)、お陰様で順調です。

しかし、復帰の時期に合わせ、ヒュウゴが扁桃腺炎に。

私達にとって初めての高熱、食欲不振、咳、鼻づまり、嘔吐等々を経験しました。こんなに小さい身体で、ウイルスと必死に戦っている姿は、本当にかわいそうでなりませんでした。

一週間後、良くなって来たと安心していたら今度は私がヒュウゴからウイルスをもらってしまい、2週間程ズルズルと熱とひどい咳とで苦しみました。子供が居ると、風邪を治すのにもこんなに大変なのかと、痛感。

私が良くなって来たら、今度はまたヒュウゴがクリスマス前に扁桃腺炎をぶり返し、もう何がなんだか、慌ただしい４週間でした。

心底思うのは、世界中のお母さん達は私にとってヒーローです。本当にお母さんって、一番強い人間だと思うからです。

さて、今日2013年のブログのポストを読み返してみました。

今年は、本当に大変な一年だった。精神的にも肉体的にもとことんやられた年でした。

でも、私にとっては掛け替えの無い一番大切なプレゼントを授かった貴重な一年でした。

ヒュウゴが元気に産まれて来てくれて、本当に良かった。

あと3日で彼も9ヶ月になります。

ズリ這いを始め、4本目の歯もそろそろ生えてくる頃です。ヒュウゴは本当にいつもご機嫌、ニコニコ、良く笑い、良く食べ、そしておとなしいです。

一緒に居るだけで、いつも笑わせてもらっているのは私の方です。

この場を借りて、今まで支えてくれた友人、同僚、そして私の気まぐれなブログを読んでくださっている皆さん、本当にありがとうございました。

皆さんの支えのお陰で，一年なんとか無事に乗り越える事が出来ました。

本当に本当に、心の底から皆さんありがとう。

来年は、より素敵な年になりますように。

健康で、素晴らしい新年となります様、お祈り申し上げます。

first day going back to work after my maternity leave

It was my first day return to work, after taking care of my baby Hugo everyday non stop for 8 months.

When Hugo's nanny has arrived at home, Hugo was playing by himself on his bed. So Thomas went to his room and pick him up. Hugo was smiling as always and even nanny picked him up, Hugo seemed very happy.

So, we are relieved that we can go to work without worry.

Well, I was not worrying so much about leaving him to his nanny, but first day, my new chapter, new challenge... I was so overwhelmed.

After Hugo is looking at his new friend/nanny for about 10 minutes, all of sudden he's started to cry. He doesn't cry like that usually. It sounds like proper baby cry in a cartoon or something.

My heart melted.

But glad Thomas was next me and I manage to hold my tears... ;-( couple of minutes later, he stop crying by distracted with his toys.

So I went to work. I was so nerves and my heart were pounding fast.

I was like a little girl, first day coming to school.

I've felt so strange to come to work. Taking a tube without my belly, walking so fast like other people, I can walk down or up to stairs without catch my breath.

I felt like its been very very long time, but I felt like it was just last month I was here with my big baby belly.

I had enormous welcome by all boss, staffs and colleagues and actually I was really emotional. I was happy that I have a place to come back and people are happy to see me and work with me.

During my maternity leave, I really suffer physically and mentally.

I realized how lucky person I am today.

I am working in one of the best restaurant in London with those amazing people.

I'm home, happy to be back.

なんだか緊張しましたが、今日は私の職場復帰初日でした。
今まで約8ヶ月間、息子といつも一緒で、ピーと泣けば、あ、あれね、グズグズすれば、あ、これね、と、そんな毎日でした。

今朝、ナニーさんが到着した時ヒュウゴはベットで一人で何やらゴソゴソ遊んでいました。私が離乳食の準備やら、身支度やらをしている間、ちょっと遅めの出勤時間にしてくれたトーマスが、ナニーさんに色々説明してくれていました。
そしてベットからトーマスに抱っこされてやって来たヒュウゴは、いつも通りご機嫌。ナニーさんが代わりに抱っこしてくれても、ずーっとニコニコ。

それを見た私達、すっかり安心しました。心配している訳ではないけれど、やはり私もトーマスも二人とも居ない中で、ちゃんとご飯食べられるかな。ちょっと昨日の夜からゲホゲホしてたけど、大丈夫かな。そして私の仕事の事、子供を持ちながら職場復帰する事、そんな事がわんさと頭の中をぐ〜るぐ〜る巡り巡っていました。

そして10分ぐらい皆でヒュウゴを囲んで遊び、彼は相変わらずニコニコ、そしてナニーさんの顔をじーっと見る事数分、いきなり"ふぇぇーん"と泣き出したからびっくり。
本当に、赤ちゃんみたいな泣き方で(赤ちゃんなんですけど…)、いつもはあんな風に泣かないので私もトーマスも本当にびっくりしました。
大粒の涙をぽろぽろ流しながら、この"ふぇーん"が続く事約数分、最後はおもちゃでごまかし、泣き止みました(汗)
一瞬私も泣きそうになったけど、トーマスが横に居たお陰で、乗り越えられました。ほんと、危なかったぁー。

そして私は仕事へ。
なんだか初めての学校に登校する子供の気分。
出勤途中ももの凄ーく不思議な気分。電車に乗る時も、優先席を気にしたり、いろんな人にスンマセンって言いながら座ったりせず、階段の上がり下りも息が切れなし、そして乗り換えの時、早く歩けるー!!私。

会社に着くと、上司や、同僚からは盛大な歓迎。
なんだか涙が出る程嬉しかったです。
私の戻ってくる場所はここにずっとあって、そして皆私に会えた事、そして一緒にまた仕事ができる事をこんなに喜んでくれるなんて、本当に感無量でした。

産休中、体力的にも、そして精神的にも相当な壁にぶつかった私。
ロンドンでも最も有名なレストランのうちの一件で、こんなに素敵な人と仕事ができる事、自分がどれだけラッキーな人間か、今日皆から教えてもらいました。

皆、ありがとう。
そして、ただいま。

I love any (i think..) kind of dogs. I love cat too but if I have to pick one, I'd say dog.

今年も、あっという間に冬の到来です。

冬と言えば、ホットチョコレート。

個人的には、普段チョコレートをあまり食べない私ですが、大きめのマグに注がれた、熱々のホットチョコレートを、暖炉の前でふぅふぅしながら飲むのは大好きです。

そして、こちらは数々のホットチョコレートのレシピ。

I'm sorry, I've been always talking about babies recently...

As you may know I've been looking for a high chair for a while. (if not, please visit →here) Few weeks of back and forth, read through so many reviews on different websites, couple of painkiller for my headache, I finally bought high chair for Hugo.

Well, to start with, it was not easy to pick.

I've choose 3 candidate chairs, then Thomas picked "the one".

And finalist is......

Baby Bjorn!!

Some of you'd think "ahh!! off course!" or some of you would think "whyyyy???!!!"

It was little over budget but I'm extremely happy after seeing Hugo having meal on that chair. He seems sit comfortably and what I love this product is so easy to clean. One of the candidate were filled with nice cushion everywhere and looks super comfortable (almost looks like a pram..), but I'm so glad that I didn't get that one. The amount of the mess he makes, especially when he's fighting sleep, table, his clothes, face, hair, floor... there is bits and pieces everywhere...

If you are planning to buy a high chair for your baby or gland child, I can recommend this product with confident.

Obviously every babies are different, and I've read few reviews that didn't work well with this product and their baby. So worth look around and if you can try them in the store, that's the best way... I think.

なんだかここのところ、ずっと赤ちゃんネタで、申し訳ないです。

ご存知の方も居るとは思いますが、もう結構長い事、ヒュウゴのハイチェアーを探しています。(ご存じない方はこちら)

何週間ものリサーチと、あっちのサイト、こっちのサイトを行ったり来たり、ありとあらゆるレビューを読み尽くし、途中、何度か頭痛薬のお世話にもなりましたが、晴れて購入する事が出来ましたー!!

ええと、結果からいくと、もの凄く大変で決められなかったので、とりあえず3つ候補を挙げ、そこからトーマスがこれ、と言う物を決めました。(←いつもこんな感じです…)

そして、見事購入に至った商品は……

Baby Bjornです!!!

もしかしたら皆さんの中には、あー!やっぱりー、間違いナイワヨー!!!とか、エー!!!、何でー?!?!と思う方もいらっしゃるかも知れないですね。

実は予算オーバーだったのですが、実際息子がこの椅子に座って離乳食を食べている姿を見て、本当にこれに決めてヨカッタ−と思いました。

かなり座り心地も良いようで、それに私は何が一番良かったって、掃除のしやすさ。

候補に挙がったハイチェアーの一つは、いかにもクッションがふかふかしてて、とっっても座り心地が良さそうな物も有りました。(なんだか乳母車みたいな構えでしたが)

でも、これにしないでほんとに良かったと思ったのは、食事の後の散らかり様。

普段はそんなにひどくないのですが、特に眠い時は目をこすったり、もう本人も必死なのが伝わってくるのですが、そんな時は床も、テーブルも、頭も、顔も服もあちこちに何かしらついていたり落ちていたり。

もし、お子さんやお孫さん用にハイチェアーの購入を決めかねている方、私個人の意見としては、この椅子はお勧めです。

でも、やっぱり赤ちゃんはそれぞれ違うので、いろいろご覧になって、決めるのが一番かも知れませんね。私はこの商品に大満足ですが、色々レビューを読んでいると、何人かは気に入らなかったと言う声も有りました。

私はとりあえず一安心ですが、現在リサーチ中の方、頑張ってくださーい!!

When I was pregnant, I always sang this song.

Because I'm getting older?, or because I'm became a mom?, or because I had plenty time to think of many things during my maternity leave..??

I don't know...

Recently I always think of my home town and my childhood memories.

When I sing this to Hugo, he's always falling asleep peacefully.

I really want to him to enjoy childhood, then hopefully sometimes he can think of it when he's grow up.

妊娠している時から、なんとなーく歌っていた歌です。
歳をとったせいか、私も親になったからか、それとも産休で色々考える時間が出来たからか、最近頻繁に実家や幼少の頃を思い出します。
この歌を歌うと、いつもうとうとするヒュウゴ。

将来、ヒュウゴが、”忘れがたい”と思える幼少時期を過ごして欲しいと思うのは、いつも歌っている、この歌のせいでしょうか。
