Mac OS X 10.6.2 Update

Apple has released the second major update for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. The 10.6.2 update fixes a guest account bug that deletes guest user directories.

The update includes the following:

General operating system fixes provided for:

# an issue that caused data to be deleted when using a guest account
# an issue that might cause your system to logout unexpectedly
# Spotlight search results not showing Exchange contacts
# the reliability of menu extras
# an issue in Dictionary when using Hebrew as the primary language
# shutter-click sound effect when taking a screenshot
# an issue with the four-finger swipe gesture
# an issue adding images to contacts in Address Book
# an issue in Front Row that could cause sluggish or slow frame rates while watching videos
# creation of mobile accounts for Active Directory users
# reliability and duration of VPN connections
# general reliability improvements for iWork, iLife, Aperture, Final Cut Studio, MobileMe, and iDisk
# overall improvements to VoiceOver performance
# this update addresses video playback and performance issues for iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009) and iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) computers that may occur in some situations while AirPort is turned on

Fonts fixes provided for:

* an issue with font spacing
* an issue in which some Fonts are missing
* font duplication issues
* an issue with some PostScript Type 1 fonts not working properly

Graphics fixes provided for:

* an issue when connecting monitors to DVI and Mini DisplayPort adapters
* an issue in which the brightness setting may not be remembered on restart
* addresses functionality with specific display models
* general reliability and performance improvements when using some applications

Mail fixes provided for:

* a situation in which Mail’s unread count may not update properly as messages are read on another computer
* an issue in which deleted RSS feeds may return
* an issue in which Mail cannot preview or Quick Look attachments when composing a new message
* an issue that can cause Address Book and/or Mail to stop responding when opened
* an issue in which email messages received from an Exchange Server are not formatted correctly
* an issue in which Mail reports “Account exceeded bandwidth limits” for some Gmail accounts

MobileMe fixes provided for:

* performance when accessing files from iDisk via the Finder and syncing iDisk files
* an issue in which syncing iDisk files does not proceed beyond “checking items”
* reliability and performance when syncing contacts, calendars, and bookmarks with MobileMe (syncing with iTunes and iSync are also improved)
* an issue that prevents some users from logging into MobileMe via the MobileMe System Preference pane

Network file systems fixes provided for:

* compatibility with third-party AFP servers
* file synchronization for portable home directories

Printing and faxing fixes provided for:

* automatic printer updates improvements
* Print dialog allowing you to enter and send to more than one fax recipient

Safari fixes provided for:

* a graphics distortion issue in Safari Top Sites
* Safari plug-in reliability

Mac OS X 10.6.2 also includes Security Update 2009-006. The update is 157.7MB/499MB depending on system and is available from the Apple Software Update utility or can be downloaded directly from here.

Urgent Update for Apple TV

Apple has sent an email to Apple TV users advising them to immediately update the device to Apple TV software 3.0.1. The previous version, Apple TV 3.0 had a bug that causes content to disappear temporarily.

This is a copy of Apple’s email:

Dear Customer,
If you’ve installed the Apple TV 3.0 software update, you should immediately update to version 3.0.1. This prevents content from temporarily disappearing until it is resynced.

To update your Apple TV software:

1. Reboot your Apple TV (unplug the power cord and plug it back in)
2. Select Settings > General from the main menu
3. Select Update Software
4. Select Download and Install

Note: Your Apple TV will conduct a restart, which is followed by the Apple logo and a status bar.

iPhone 3GS bundles for Mobily Raqi VIP customers only

The Apple iPhone 3GS is now officially available in Saudi Arabia and sold by Mobily. The iPhone 3GS is unlocked and available with 3 postpaid bundles (99, 299 and 399) and one prepaid bundle for each of the 3 models (iPhone 3G 8GB, iPhone 3GS 16GB and iPhone 3GS 32GB).

However the iPhone 3GS 299 and 399 bundles are only available for exclusive VIP (Mobily Raqi) members. The same thing happened with the iPhone 3G, only the 99 bundle was available for “regular customers”.

To be eligible for a 399 iPhone 3GS bundle you need to be a postpaid member for at least 10 months and a minimum monthly bill of 800SR. Etisalat and du in UAE do not have a similar restriction on iPhone 3G and 3GS bundles.

This is the bundle list from Mobily’s website. The page does not mention Raqi/VIP restrictions and the * at end where it says “conditions and terms apply” does not refer to anything because none of the bundles in that list have a * near it’s name. We have taken a screen shot just in case Mobily tries to change it. Bander (@Saudilawyer) is seriously considering suing Mobily for false advertising. The table also doesn’t clarify that the iPhone 8GB is an iPhone 3G.

We hope to see Mobily being more clean on who is eligible for their bundles. Please share your experience in the comments.

iPhone 3GS in Saudi Arabia on November 7th

Mobily has sent an SMS message to everyone who ordered an iPhone 3GS using their website. The SMS message confirmed that the iPhone 3GS will be released tomorrow November 7th 2009.

The SMS message said: “Mobily would like to let you know that the iPhone 3GS will be available starting tomorrow morning at all main Mobily branches and to take advantage of your pre-order please visit one of the following branches…”.

Mobily iPhone 3GS release date and price

Mobily should finally be releasing the iPhone 3GS in Saudi Arabia on Saturday November 7th 2009. We were told this information late Wednesday at 3 a.m but the web host had problems with our server and the site was down for the whole day.

Apparently the iPhone 3GS will be sold initially to the people who ordered the phone using the Mobily iPhone 3GS order form (which was taken down for a few days).

We notice that Mobily did not provide an option for MMS messages.

As we said before the iPhone from Mobily is officially unlocked as confirmed by Apple, Inc in this support document. No matter what Mobily says, the iPhone 3GS is unlocked (unless that document is out of date, in that case CITC will probably do something about it).

Updates: iTunes 9.0.2 and Apple TV 3.0

Apple has released iTunes 9.0.2. This update includes support for Apple TV software version 3.0 which was released on the same day. It also includes an option for dark background in iTunes Grid View and better accessibility support.

iTunes 9.0.2 is available from the Apple Software Update Utility or Apple’s site. The update will also disable Palm Pre syncing as expected.

Apple also updated the Apple TV software to version 3.0.

Apple TV 3.0 changes the interface as well as adding support for iTunes LP, iTunes Extras, Genius Mixes and Internet radio.

Mobily is now taking orders for the iPhone 3GS

Update: Mobily has fixed their iPhone page to correctly display iPhone 3GS. “The wait is over, and the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet is now available to pre-order exclusively from Mobily. Book your iPhone 3GS now to ensure being the first to recieve it on launch day.”

Mobily’s iPhone page got updated today, now it doesn’t even mention the iPhone 3GS but instead it adds a form for ordering the iPhone.

The website now includes the following: “Now officially in Saudi Arabia. Be the first to get it from Mobily, the only official provider with full support from Apple”. This is the same form used back in February when the iPhone 3G was released. I guess Mobily was lazy.

Mobily & Apple to launch iPhone 3GS in Saudi Arabia

Update: Mobily is now taking orders for the iPhone 3GS on their website.

Mobily announced that they will be bring the iPhone 3GS to Saudi Arabia. Mobily made that announcement in an extremely short and vague press release that can be found on Zawya.

The press release stated that Apple and Mobily has “reached an agreement”, did it take them all these months just to reach an agreement? While in UAE, Mobily’s partner Etisalat will release the iPhone 3GS this Tuesday. The press released also mentioned that the iPhone 3GS will be “be available to qualifying customers” what defines qualifying customers? Finally it asks to visit this page for more info, however no info can be found on that page.

UAE’s Etisalat to launch iPhone 3GS 27th of October

UAE’s Etisalat has finally announced that they will release the iPhone 3GS in the country on October 27, 2009. On Etisalat’s site you will find the prices for the iPhone 3GS:

32 GB iPhone 3GS AED 2,799 – 16GB iPhone 3GS AED 2,399 – 8GB iPhone 3G AED 1,999.

Mobily has yet to announce anything regarding the iPhone 3GS release. Most likely it will be on the same date: 27th of October. Mainly because the iPhone 3G was released in Saudi Arabia and UAE on the same day (22nd of February 2009).

Three new “get a mac” ads aimed at Windows 7

Apple has released 3 new “Get a Mac” ads on the same day as the release of Microsoft Windows 7. Windows 7 should fix many issues that happened with Microsoft’s previous operating system, Windows Vista. The first ad “Broken Promises” shows PC promising that this OS will be better than the previous one and flashes back to previous Windows generations until Windows 2. “Tetter Tottering” and “PC News” shows Windows users switching to a Mac instead of Windows 7.
