For an entreprenuer or an executive who is running a business succession planning should be a similar afair , specially for entrepreneur it is life changing matter to leave the organization they built from scratch , so continously they need to have succession planning in thier mind , what if I leave this company today - who will be the most suitable person to run it after me . In case of family managed businesses answer to this question is crystal clear , Children are going to take over one day and a great deal of effort is spent on grooming children on thier future role from education to th ecorrect experience and mentorship . For organizations which are professionally managed , succession planning and next line leadership is the buzz word of the day and it has been there from more than couple of decades but the success of such programs is always questionable . In very few such organization we will have a clear visibility as who will be running the show after the current leader. Consider example of GE where Jeff immelt had clear step wise vision placed for 3 prospective leaders out of which Jack welch came out as clear winner , some thing similar happened in ICICI recently where 3 strong candidates were mentored for the top post . Such succession plannings brought predictability in the business and hence no knee jerk reaction in the share market when a new leader is announced about whom stakeholders dont have any idea. However it may sound easy to say that one should always be in look out for his successor when he is in top job but thats the beauty of being in top job that you probably never want to leave it ... It is as hard as thinking about end of life ...

They can not keep working on same set of business processes because technology is injecting changes into processes every now and then and significant number of disruptive ones.

We need to constantly think about new way of working and abondon old ones. for example Even before there is need or question of cost advantage we need to evaluate cloud computing.
In fact in my opinion Abandoning itself may not be as beneficial as the process of thinking in this direction which will help you visulaize new and improved ways of doing things.

Management is keen on getting things back on track , they are looking for a super hero to save the project , they do a head hunting and bring a "Manager" who has proven his worth in the past ( well at least in his resume) , all eyes are set on him and he is feeling trapped under pressure cooker .
If I am that manager , what would I not do

1) Don't ask for too many new dash board / Reports : I may have a way in which I understand things , I may have learnt and built priorities in my previous projects to resolve such situations . So when I come to this land where existing reports , terms , KPIs are nothing but Greek and Latin to me . I may not understand the reports , I may not find the data which I am looking for and I immediate temptation is to walk in to the team leads , module leads and tell them to create some more dashboards , which I think is relevant and flash necessary information . Now imagine this is a team which is already slogging and I may have added to their frustration . More reports mean taking away a little more productive time from their schedule and filling little more dissatisfaction .

2) Don't jump into decision : Just after my arrival , I start making decisions , changing team structure , setting new target for people . Its not that I am doing it out of my random thought . I have good experience in such projects and some of these things have worked in past for me so I think it will work here too . A team hates manager who takes decision without getting
himself involved in the situation , all projects have different grounds and so different ground realities . My past experience can be perfectly the right thinkg to do but it will be much better to apply it after knowledge of environment and context , the biggest factor ignored most of the time is the ecosystem of team . I am desperate to get results but then it is not a war front .

3) Build consensus rather then imposing decisions : Before I enter into team , the team is already under leadership of some one else . Existing organizations may have ways to take decisions , it may be a good possibility that previous manager made decision on his own but if a new manager does it , that may slightly difficult for team . The best way is to have consensus driven decision making , If I have valuable inputs , I am sure team will understand provided I have supporting arguments to convince

What esle I can do for my loved pandva's ? Kunti's response to this question was very astonishing , she said oh lord I want that more problems should come to our lifebecause whenever we have been into trouble we have remembered you with utmost sincereity , we have called upon you for help and guidance and you have always appeared to show उस the path in troubled waters. If we are in trouble that would meen being constantly in toubh with you , thinkig of you and your belessed presenece.
Kunti is attitued towards problems and grievance in her life is not very common otherwise , that is because normally when challenged by difficulties of life we are toobusy in fighting with them to notice what kind of changes they are bringing to us , I am not saying these changes are always good but certainly there are lots of positives in such situations. Bad times are the real groomers of any individuals and some of the most admired people could do wonders because they faced bad times , some of the greatest innovations of human history are from the period of world war.

Specifically, the Business Analysis Professional elicits, analyzes, validates and documents business,
organizational and/or operational requirements. Solutions are not predetermined by the Business Analysis Professional, but are driven solely by the requirements of the business. Solutions often include a systems development component, but may also consist of process improvement or organizational change. “
This traditional definition for role of a BA is accurate for customized application developments where some needed to help customer understand his requirement , document it and explain to technical team for developing application. In current IT project landscape there are many ways to address a business problem and hence role of BA is changing with broader set of responsibilities

Package Implementation : Packages are off the shelf component which provide standard set of solution for a particular business function ( with minimum development effort) so in such projects the role of BA changes to Business process Analyst and even business process re-engineering. BA will perform "AS-IS" and "TO-BE" process analysis and then help technical consultants to customize wherever needed.
Support Projects : For support projects BA will handle level 2 and level 3 support for an application where his job would be to resolve functional queries posted by end users. He may also be involved with application developers for bug fixing and other maintenance related issues.
Reporting projects : One of core responsibility of BA is process large data and derive conclusion from it, reporting or data warehouse projects focus on this strength where a BA needs to provide reports as needed by business.

some one who can not see his teachers and uncles in pain would have seen dead bodies of his real brothers , was he so detached with the world that he could have still continued with his meditation .

I doubt if that would have been the case , instead we would have seen another Arjuna - the destroyer force , who would have again picked up his gandiv and hunted down Duryodhan and company in revenge. That's the reasons Krishna asked him to take a decision considering what his duty is (Karma Yoga ) .

Hence it seems to me that the best way of utilising your freedom is to choose what you consider is right , and stand by it with all might. You are free to choose what do you want but you are not free from choices as long as you are surviving in the society , choices have to made at every step . Let no one make those choices for you , people may help but can not take decision on your behalf because the only way to be happy is to know you have complete authority over choice , it is you who has chosen this path and it is you who will finish it .

The greatest management guru of current time Peter Drucker mentions

“Business exists to supply goods and services to customers, rather than to supply jobs to workers and managers, or even dividends to stockholders. Profit is not the explanation, cause, or rationale of business behavior and business decisions, but rather the test of their validity” – Peter Drucker

As per Drucker business identifies the need of the value creation for a particular segment of people and creates that value, if your business is making profit that just validates your creation of value for your customer. So there is something larger which is purpose of business , profit creation may not just be validity test ( as Drucker mentions ) but definitely be an integral part of it however there are other people like John Renesch who have put a very strong support for greater purpose of business

"Corporations are human-made organisms, associations of human beings. To see this association as having one solitary purpose and responsibility, to grow only in economic terms, is such an extreme view that implosions like what happened to Enron, WorldCom and other corporate collapses will become more and more commonplace." -- John Renesch

John has hit the profit creation part of business too hard, taking specific examples like Enron and Worldcom. Same sentiments are shared by James C Collins in his book “Built to last” mentioning that maximizing profit has not been the dominating force or primary objective of visionary companies, yes they seek profit but they are equally guided by core ideology – core values and sense of purpose beyond just making money. Even though we can never undermine the bottom lines for any business yet we have sufficient reason to believe that this can never be an ultimate goal of business. If we go back and find out reasons of starting of several organization we would come across passion for technology, innovation, identification of improvement and value creation, making things better and faster as some of the key reasons which may include something as personal as working for self of being once own master.

Anu Agha of Thermax sums it well "We survive by breathing but we can't say we live to breathe. Likewise, making money is very important for a business to survive, but money alone cannot be the reason for business to exist".
Whatever is the objective of business, profits can not be negated but why do we need profit? If a firm wants to sell some product why can not it provide just by covering its operational and capital expense without taking any extra profit, this much should be enough for sustaining any organization but will that be enough for growth as well? Can it enable value creation and innovation?

That was the case few years back , conmpanies were offering promotions and hikes without giving much consideration to qualification , age or relevant experience . The main reason was growing size of teams and hence some one had to be given management job to handle others .

2007 onwards Infosys and other companies had grown upto one lakh and now it was not possible to keep the same rate of promotion going on so they used a new policy of mandatory certification every year to slow down promotions , recently they added another policy initiative called iRACE ( Infosys roles and career) which is bound to prolong the time in which an average employee is promoted , it may also deepen the hierarchy from previous grade system ( A to E) to new number system ( 1 to 8 ) with addition of some more roles like "Project lead" or "technical leads" which were not there initially.

Even though this is a standard practice with international service and product organization companies like SAP, Google , IBM to promote people after they have spent sufficient time in team and organization , at times it takes a decade to become a project manager . But this was more because of flatter structure followed by these organizations .
The kind of initiative proposed by Infosys may not go down well with employees specially in a situation where for almost 2 years they have been working without incerements and pormotions, some of the rival firms have taken a upside appoach with declaring new increments and promotions to compensate .

I have divided the strategies followed by consumer manufactures into 4 parts

1) Customer Delight: With a focus on customer touch point and empowering customers for gaining better value and satisfaction from products and services. This will also contain strategy development for entire customer relation management practice.
2) Streamlining support processes: All the internal processes which provide support to customer service have been kept under support processes. With current economic environment and for better customer experience, it is extremely important to stream line support processes to gain maximum efficiency
3) Better Market coverage: Continuous product innovation also demands expansion of relevant services to the areas where products will be launched. Organizations are also determined to expand its service centers by various channels.
4) Common processes: These processes are common across all of the above three areas and used in all.

Customer Delight:
Organizations are continuously working for enhancing the customer experience in the areas of post sales support and services. One of the important outcomes being certification offered by Service and Support Professionals Association (SSPA) for providing superior technical support and services

Predictable service delivery: With the help of excellence in operation companies would be able to provide services which give predictability to client resulting minimum distortion in their daily life. This predictability ranges from assurance of data security to the timely delivery of products and parts.

Standard and global customer interaction processes: The Key factor for predictability in services will be developing standard process maps for global operations which will ensure similar customer experience world wide.

Customer Education: Organizations have been reaching out to customers and educating them to gain maximum value out of products. Some companies offer customer self repair processes to empower customers to fix their products at their own convenience. One leading organization recently launched Power To Change campaign that encourages personal computer users around the world to make behavioral changes in support of the environment.

Streamlining and Cost Optimization of support processes:
For Repair parts forecasts, pricing, product portfolio, introductions, rollovers, competitive response, and supply in an integrated way to enable risk management of business plans at a worldwide level.

Co creation of value with Outsourcing: Developing an operating model based on sourcing strategies which can provide quality product and services at optimum cost. This will require managing interface with international vendors and developing a process leadership in partners to bring them to the same level of efficiency where manufacturer functions.

Better Management of channel partners and service support centers: It remains a key goal for all global players to better manage these partners across the globe as they are face for end customer.

Developing and sustaining Eco friendly practices: Players have been working towards reducing the impact on environment from last 50 years now which include developing more eco friendly products as well as creating better recycling and product disposal Practices.

Market coverage:

At one side companies have to penetrate further for providing services to existing products on the other side it also keeps its focus towards developing service strategies for new products

More Service Options for existing products: Provide customer more convenience in terms of preferred location , mode of shopping/replacing/repairing products : Dial-A-<part>Cartridge service, which enables customers to order any part through a toll-free number as and when they have run out of supplies. The part can be delivered to the customer within hours of placing the order, at their door-step.

Developing service strategies for new products: Companies have to push themselves to become a leader in product innovation across the segments hence it becomes bed stone for success of any product to have a strong service network which can fulfill all requirements related to repair and parts replenishment for end customers.

One of the recent tool was to convince listeners that station plays maximum songs without too much interference of advertisements , Mirchi achived this by putting concept of back to back songs without any
break in between. This strategy forced other players like Radio one , Radio city followed the trend . Radio one went one step ahead and declared a war with committing 13 songs an hour which is maximum , it sounded next to impossible with average length of songs being 5 minutes , even if you play continuously for 60 minutes , one can listen only 12 of them but amazingly Radio one is very comfortable in playing 13 songs with its RJ's doing sufficient talking as well as
playing advertisements in between. The trick was to play smaller songs and avoid long once , stop the song much before its ending or cut some of the portion ( mostly music) . This went unnoticed and successfully because people listen to radio while conducting their routing activities so they never pay it full attention unless there is a favourite song being played.
Overall Radio one had beaten its competitors in their own game without compromising on anything and now it was One's turn to go offensive , A channel which was any way more versatile and played all kind of music including regular program for old songs as well as English ( It is the only one in Pune Playing English songs) ।

Radio one launched new plan of not repeating any song for entire day , with a library of lacs of songs this is cakewalk for any station but it is One which connected to the real purpose of Radio where listeners want to be surprised all the time , with new songs as well with old ones. Radio one could also identify the frustration which audience faced when stations kept playing a new number dozen times in a day.Its been close to a month and competitors are clue less on how to counter this move, the only option as of now seems to follow the leader..yet again :)

Ensuring that the product which customer has bought will provide him service only under one vendor and he will not be able to switch vendors. This way customers have to at times take decision to stick with one service provider and one of the classic example is mobile number portability .
In my 5 years of corporate career I have changed more then 5 places because of work , that means every time I have to change my mobile number or at times I if it was short duration like 2-3 months then I had to take a call to be on roaming and increase my phone bill . With mobile number portability my service provider who gave me first number is not holding my number in case I decide to change to new operator.
People talk about customer centric organisation , here I see a customer centric industry . Thanks to innovation in technology , regulations and of course willing ness of players now entire industry is thinking from customers point of view .
Another similar example will be one of the recent decision to enable customer accessing any DTH operator using same set top box , this will be called conditional access and will be executed by associating a small device with your Set top box.
It is definitely hard decision for service providers to let their customers go to some one else with such an ease but developing a seem less experience for customers will be beneficial for entire industry in terms of common standards and competitive environment . If one will loose customers then similar manner he will gain them from rival providers.
Overall entire industry will be very competitive with all service providers have to match the best offers given by competitors and The differentiation will be significant from each other to retain the customer base.

Define : Definition of your goal is very important , what exactly you want to do in life , why would you like to get into an MBA after all its a place where they would not let you sleep more than 3-4 hours in a day , it will cost you fortune , you would continously staring at your laptop screen and reading numerous reports in record deadlines, there will be cutthroat competition among your pears , you will be almost cut from your family and social life.

Why would one want so many trouble ? and if you have already made your mind then you better have a definition ofyour goal, may be not as ambitious as becoming CEO of MNC in next 20 years but definitely as basic as what do you like to do in general.

1) Peopls People : Are you the one in team who knows most of the people around, communication is an opportunity for you , when you speak people just can not drift their focus , you can get along with every one. In addition to these points lots of clue can be taken from the job you have been doing , have you coordinated many events in college , are you involved in interacting with customer regularly from you team , do you handle communication with internal stakeholders , do you think and work with creativity
If these are some of the things describing you and your work then you must consider Marketing as your choice of specialisation for MBA.

2) The Money man : you have a dmat account from before any of your friends even understood what is dmat, you love to understand money matters , you have done your graduation in finance related subjects , your client is financial instituion and you enjoy understanding thier business processes. If these characterstics describe you to some extent then look for finance as an option of specialisation.

3) Always operational : If you have background of handling things at various levels in shop floors , graduation in mechanical , production , automotive engineering etc and you like to get involved in activities which run an organisation then operations management is the field for you

4) Tech lover : Now a days there are lots of option for doing MBA in systems management and information management , It makes sense for some one who has already spent signifant time in technology oriented

Develop : In all the B school assesments they try to find out candidates who have been groomed well in almost all the facets of thier personality , One may think then what are these people going to do , isn't it their job to provide you direction and develop your skills in multiple dimension of personality but please understand it is easy to start from a point up to where some work has already been done rather than starting from a blank page.

As part of develop phase you would have to develop your skills and personality with respect to the career field you are interested in ( As we talked about in Define stage) so start taking more interest in the areas of your work which are directly aligned with your career definitions. In addition to this work a little on personal aspect as well , good communication skill , positive thinking , good people skill , keeping a calm and composed head are some of the things which you should try to achieve for a successful career in any field.

Decide : After defining your career objective and doing some ground work to develop skills in those direction now is the time to decide which institutes you should choose . The institutes should have good reputation in your choice of area . It is time to do a thorough research both primary as well as secondary and find out which all institutes you would like to target , please keep your mind open and do look at some of the global (but feasible ) options .

After taking this decision you can start applying for admissions in respective colleges.

Demonstrate & Differentiate : Even though steps so far may not be easy but the toughest part is to crack the exam and selection process , this will need a structured approach . Once you are through with the written test , group discussion and interviews need to be taken care and this is where your ground work in step 1 and 2 will help . For beating your competition you will have to stand out in crowd, you should have differentaition points and deep knowledge in the education and work you have done so far.

It may sound difficult to differentiate oneself from thousands of other candidates who have done the same graduation ,worked in the same areas that of yours and even have same hobbies and passion that of yours . That is the reason you will have to focus in a narrow scope which can play as your strenth .

The hidden benefit here is that a company can work on a model and customize it specifically to organisational need hence spending resource and money which is just fit for its need rather than simply following some path which may have worked for another organization not similar in size and culture.

Restricted use of Measurement and Analtics : Where large organization may have TB of data available with them in almost all fields for small companies the focus is always too much on running and growing business then collecting data . It is very difficult to clearly define the metrices which business will need to monitor closely . Even if data is available at times it is not very clear how to make sense out of it

Availability of Process blueprints: Process documentation and a central repository of processes is key to management of any activity but in most of the cases process knowledge remains as a concept with various subject matter experts and not codified explicitly , this is common even in sufficiently big organizations. Even if the work of process documentation is initiated , most of the employees take it a liability in addition to thier work and it becomes a part time assignment.

Its not a panacea : Organizations may work under misconception that once CMMi model is implemented it is going to address all the quality related issues
which is not true because quality related issues have much broader scope to be solved by just one model like CMMi , It can certainly be a part of
organizational quality program but one can not rely on CMMi to fix all issues in quality.

ISB, SP Jain Institute of Management and research are leading the pack with introduction of new program which can cost you more than 2.5 Million INR to get an MBA degree ( well to be specific some of these may be only diplomas or certificates if not approved by AICTE) . At one side ISB is starting PGPMAX which will be more of a part time MBA course for executives and will be taught at Hyderabaad campus with some sessions in Kellogs and Wharton on the other side SP Jain has already launched a course in collaboration with Schulich university Canada which will be divided between Mumbai and Toranto campus.

There is no doubt that some of the included expenses are stay in foreign campuses , food etc but the point to ponder is whether these courses will be wble to provide you the relevant return on investment. If we include other living expenses for around 2 years , it will come across 3 Million INR, It is enough amount to secure a middle class common man's pension for lifetime so what is the kind of ROI one is looking from this kind of investment , well I do understand intellectual development and ability to apply structured methods for solving strategic , operational issues etc would be some of the great take away from this course but at the end it all boils down to what can you do with such skills i.e How much you can earn or what is the kind of job you are offered.

If we even consider some of the normal not so expensive courses , they have failed to provide a good ROI to more than 50% of the participants . All the media hype about million dollar salary in pink news paper is focused on some top 5- 10% of the class participants , rest go back with a decent increment in their salaries and mostly almost in the similar area of work ( as even in campus placements organizations give due weight to the background of candidate). even though top 20 institutes take fees in the range of 4 to 10 lacs , and the salary of students coming out of program varies between 4 to 11 lac with average being somewhere 6.5 to 7.

two of the Three generic strategies which even watchman of these B school knows is cost leadership and differentiation

Cost Leadership : Salary , roles depend on various factors from business condition to industry need so why can't B school implement a more innovative model which they have been teaching for long time , They can take a fixed component of fees which covers cost of course material , infrastructure etc and a variable component of the fees which depends on what kind of benefit is materialized to the student after course , to be specific let it be a percentage of annual pay package received by student , isn't something similar today's IT organizations doing by charging a variable component depending on how much money IT saved / earned for their clients .

I think We all have something to learn from TATA's here , a 2000$ car and a 20$ water purifier , that is what Indian market demands value for every penny spent , specially in education which is very crucial for indian middle class .

Differentiation : There are very few institutes in India which have created a differentiation , I would consider NITIE (SCM), ICFAI(FIN), FMS(Service), IRMA(Rural), IIFT (IB), XLRI, SCMHRD (HR) , MICA (MarCom) as some of the leaders , rest all are more of "Me too" kind . They should start differentiating in a way which adds value to students and also makes sure that it is filling a wide gap in the industry

Your heart wants to follow it not knowing whether there is some benefit in it , whether there is a purpose to it , can it serve higher interest who cares?. Those who start walking are bound to meet with so many destinations , its upto them to choose whether to stop here , whether to walk continuously , should some one else be included , is there anything meaning full to this ... If you would have thought ofthese questions I bet you would have never started that kind of journey which Ms Shabnam Virmani in Kabeer Project.

Kabeer is a mystic poet of 15th century from Northern India , he did not have much knowledge of scriptures or any holy book but seems he had the ultimate experience of true self and purpose of human life , he wrote small verses which contain elixir of life from daily living to highest meditation and very aptly such knowledge can not come from reading , such knowledge can come only fromexperience . Map his words to the most ancient hindu scriptures and it will match word by word be it about description of the lordwithout any form or be it about rituals vs simple meditation. Yet he symbolizes what I may say the most secular figure of Indian history , no wonder India is a secular state , It is land of Kabeer after all. Ms Shabnam Virmani now director of Kabeer project in bangalore started her journey to collect different shades of Kabeer across India, the question is why across India , what do you mean by different Kabeer? well the fact is Kabeer died leaving his work unstructured and unconsolidated , later when people started collecting it they realised there are so many other verses written by local people and credited it to Kabeer ( huh and they say web 2.0 and user generated content is discovered in 20 century after internet) So there is a kabeer who wrote in awadhi and typical north indian but there is one who wrote in Rajasthani and then other in gujraati and also in punjaabi with urdu influence . There can be only one explanation that all these Kabeers are a core idea followed by local people to generate their own Kabeer the one which they understand better , the one which talks in their language and gives example for their lives.

Thats why Miss Virmani found it a passion to explore local folk song artist who sing Kabeer , she did not have any idea of what this project will turn into but today her journey has taken her from bangalore to Malwa, Ayodhya, Kanpur, Jaypur, Karanchi, Lahore and guess what to Stanford where there are research on Indian literature and Kabeer at its pivotal.

Kabeer project today has a set of 4 movies which are screened for free in annual events at Mumbai, Pune and bangalore followed by a gala event of marathon classical and folk singers across border , talking about love, spirituality and boundrylessness. It publishes literature and translation from Kabeers verses and has launched DVDs .People now give ideas to Ms Virmani that she should enhance the projec to promote secular image , to bring Kabeer to urban youth and what not but what she has already achieved was beyond imagination and transformative
for her self and people associated with her . It has repeated the attempt yet again and this time with all its might . In couple of recent adds where intel describes how its stars are different from common stars and in other where it talks about "our inventions are so big that you can not see them". In first impact it gave me feeling of some political parties which normally promote parties rather than promoting the work done by them but they do so because they have not done any work and they dont have any thing to talk about on the contrary this can never be case with intel which is so fast in product development that the time it releases its ad for one product till than you have other products on the shelf .

Than what prompts organisations to promote themselves rather than any specific product , one reason for sure is that they have moved beyond any competition and competitor in specific product segments which make them fearless knowing their products are picked up by customers anyway. but whats the objective of such ads In old time intels advertisements were criticised saying they don't provide any ( or enough) reason to buy the intel processor. These ads have been able to build a strong top of the mind recall and a better brand value for intel so much so that even people who do not know computers or whats a processor know intel exist at the same time it is difficult to name any other competitor in the same industry ( specially when intel captures 80% of the market share).
In case of companies like Intel the start of such campaign is the kind of product or services they are in, a processor may have been the most critical part of the PC but it was always hidden from the customer and that is where Intel changed the game with intel inside program plus it was very difficult to market or advertise the complexity and benefit of processor to a normal end user so it was easy to just ensure that the name Intel is known .
One more such attempt was recent ad of Tata with tag line "Desh ko hum chalate hai" for one moment I got confused that this is an advertisement of a political party specially its timing with elections but an organization like Tata which is servicing so many touch points of our daily lives can certainly claim that they run a major part of the country and the benefit will be in terms of much needed trust and goodwill.

Overall I feel such marketing happens in following cases
1) Surrogate marketing where product is tobacco, alcohol and can not be promoted directly2) Organizations which have too many products and services either in the same area (bank, LIC) or in diversified areas3) If the product is too complex to explain 4) Political parties or social organizations.

In GW when sender is editing /writing /musing in his email text editor , that is instantly visible WORD BY WORD , now imagine that , this is what is called real time messaging , messages at the speed of your thought ( though I would never like this much realtime ness so google has also given a check box to disable this ). Even more exciting is that attachments also appear realtime on the recipients wave window. The time sender drags and drops attachment , thumbnails will appear at receivers window much before he has downloaded entire lot.

Another cool function is to playback forwarded mails in the sequence in which they were originated and evolved, its so common to forward a mail chain to a new recipient and he has to go through entire chain from bottom to top but now he can just click on playback option and this chain will start appearing from scratch , pretty impressive I would say. This way it is much easier to add a person to the wave and again for people who would like to choose to send a private reply , they can do so privately in wave too. Google calls it a tree structured mailing/messaging where any branch of tree can be taken and expanded only to a limited group ( or to entire public).
This wave will without any doubt collaborate and consolidate all your communication channels. Very soon you will be using waves in your orkut accounts, blogging portals and anywhere else and yet be able to control and monitor all of them from your google wave (email ) editor. So what happens about editing, currently if you share something across so many comunication channels you edit it every where but in wave you just have to edit it once and it will be reflected everywhere . This collaboration is even possible for documents editing and production where same document can be edited (simultaneously!!)by multiple members ( it will include power point , spreadsheets and text based docs).
oh yes it also works on mobiles !

Undoubtedly it is the first and foremost collaborative tool of its kind and competitors of google (like yahoo, MSN and now their marriage..) will find themselves in a shocked state to counter it ,may be copying this formula from google would be easy and at time people do it well ( like facebook copied stuff from orkut and twitter and today is leading the social networking area) but we all know google has the ability to take a quantum leap every time..

Looking at a practicle example suppose every day when you come from office to home , you wife opens the door, takes your laptop from you , offers you a gilass of chilled water , this is standard operating procedure which is followed on your returning but what if one day to your surprise it did not happen , you came home and there was no one to open door, take your bag and make you comfortable , is this a problem ?
In ITIL terminology , this is a disruption from daily standard operating procedure hence it is not a problem , realisticaly if you think your wife may be caught up in some other work or she may be out to buy vegetables in grocery store near by , this was just one off incident , specially if you see that from the next day onward you are back on the same routine । But if next day also same incident is repeated and even after that you do not get the expected reception on your home coming than there are multiple occurances of the same incidents pointing to one common root cause and thats a problem for you so ITIL would take it into problem management process.

Now once you have realised that this is a problem , you would have to resolve it and for resolution you would need to do a root cause analysis , after putting some stress on your head and talking to your wife you realised that the root cause of this cold reception may be because she has been doing it from so long but you never care to talk to her about her day instead
you switch on TV and engross yourself on useless breaking news of 24X7 news channels. Now this problem ( having identified root cause) becomes a known error for you and it seems for solving it you would need request for change to change the standard operating procedure , now instead of turning to TV on your arrival you would rather have a small chat with your wife
and find out how was her day .

Even if this approach does not solve the problem than you have two alternative one is to do a functional escalation that is to escalate some one who is higher in authority and can handle the problem in this case it may be your father in law or mother in law who. Last year during tougher times he tried to remove around 1900 employees from the jet payroll , which sounded a right decision for the company as many of these people were on probation and they had completed their probation period post which it was Jet's call whether it want them to continue or not, given the special macroeconomic conditions there was no other option . Of course no one can deny the human side of the story but this risk has always been associated with private jobs and people today come prepared to face it any time .

Doing a job today does not make you feel as safe as it was 4 years back or much safer before 2000 bubble burst or safest before GE Neutron Jack era when lifetime jobs were guaranteed and companies like IBM was famous for committing to life time employment of its employees . Currently once more jet fired 2 pilots facing an unprecedented situation with almost entire pilot staff going on a synchronized leave. Organizations which are service intensive and have to face volume of customers on many touch point every day turn themselves into a tricky situation by such issues , some thing similar happened in 2006 when some staff of gourmet ( a food supplier to airlines) was fired resulting a strike which meant no food in flights irrespective of the fact that many of these flights were as long as 14 hours journey.

In such conditions company would not have any choice but give it up to the demands of the union. Even though there is no such instance observed in IT industry where in last two year thousands and thousands of people have left the job but there is definitely damages, when companies remove employees who are redundant or so called non performers , people who have been retained also feel the fear and start looking for the opportunities to leave the current company . It may result to a fast attrition rate once normal times return back which leaves companies into a situation where they have work but no resources and now they are bound to hire resources from market at higher costs.

Given this vicious cycle , it seems organizations just can't fire but still they do ....

One latest example is their rapidArc beam which targets tumor in a single continuous
rotation around the patient leading to the highest possible precision and control of the treatment ( Hence lesser chances of killing healthy tissues) . Whats motivating in this case is rather than putting forward a target of increasing bottom line , increased rate of product development, rapid go to market timing ( and what not) CEO hit on a point which can be related by almost every one in the company and also by supplier and customers of the company , a higher cause which is worth putting every bit of effort . Should it has been a normal sales and number oriented motivation , only top and middle management would have been running behind those numbers but now every one would be willing to contribute looking at the noble cause.

This should be a learning for many other in different industries as how to thing of a bigger picture and inspire people to do something which can give them extreme satisfaction and drive their enthusiasm to the peak point of making a difference. The beauty of such inspiration is that it has not ignored top and bottom lines in fact it has encompassed everything in much better way then any other vision could have been , meeting such challenges means producing most innovative products, driving highest quality level and near zero defects , taking direct feedback from customers and their customers and implementing them , carving a niche for yourself and when all of this is done numbers will follow.

Look back in the history of business whenever such a vision statement was created , it had become an instant success . I see Mr D B Ambani's objective of making a call cheaper than a postcard considering our rural population can afford only this much for communication created one of the largest telecom player of India, there are many more !!.. Tata family also put forward many such challenges to its employees like creating a world class Indian hotel when Indians were not allowed in british hotels, Developing leading science institute like IISc to groom young india !!

It sounds important only to great economist and academicians who are good only in postmortems and never in predictions.
How should industry leaders respond to this down turn ? : after reading couple of answers on this I am myself now expert to give an answer , tow things 1) Innovation 2) Cost optimization . These two are the buzz words and now even in normal times innovation is very difficult for an industry where thousands of players selling same thing so the easiest resort to the industry is cost optimization which means cutting on head count . I have till now not seen a different answer to this question and hence stopped reading at the point where this arrives , whether its been asked to some business guru or minister , I have yet to see some innovation in their answers.
What is your focus market ? : Dare any one answer this beyond India and China , people will think he is illiterate and have not even attended pre school education, even kids know that these countries are focus market from super cars to match boxes , whats the point in reading a whole paragraph just to get the same conclusion

Do you see these green shots as a sign of recovery ? : This is a binary question and half of junta replies in 1 and other half replies in 0 so you are left confused whether there are any green shots , whether there are any recovery ? no matter how logical answer to this question is , it will not satisfy your quest of knowing whether recovery is happening or not because you yourself keep looking at so many contradictory examples around.

Currently where internet penetration in India is for 250 Mn people on the other hand mobile penetration is almost double with
around 500 Mn people . Organizations which missed on net applications can directly jump to mobile . Recently SBI's Mobile banking is a classic example , SBI could never make it big in ebanking but counting on the fact that now mobile technology is mature and secure , plus their are regulatory frameworks around , it can instantly reach to such a large user base.
With cheaper high end sets ( including iphone and BBs) applications dealing with media contents are also becoming popular and a large segment is using these apps exhaustively. Mobile is already transferring good amount of data from one place to other.

Security : Here I am looking at all kind of security , with global connectivity Internet security has definitely become high priority and companies and professionals in this business are making a fortune a logical extension to it is mobile security which seems to be more vulnerable thanks to wireless , blue tooth , data card etc.
On the other side now physical security is also taken very seriously not only at corporate level but also for personal and private usages, look around the new real estate development and you would find each flats have security systems.

Television applications : Television penetrates even much larger segment then Internet and mobile and now holds lots of potential . The first immediate preference would be to make it interactive and start selling products via live televisions. however the hidden treasure is in on demand content , today's lifestyle make it very difficult for people to follow some
program on a regular schedule , they must have flexibility to watch any program at any time of their choice , In India some operators are now already equipped with these facilities where any one can view any program ( at his own preferred time )telecasted in last one week .
Going forward a huge entertainment library which would empower users to pick and play her favourite programs ( no matter whether they are telecasted on current week or closed down last year) and watch them. Latest plasma LCD panels and home theatre system will compliment it very well

At one place twitter started to facilitate only small updates about self but then it restricted itself to it , even after there is so much buzz about twitter in the web world and increasing users , it has not added any significant applications to attract more hits. Sharing a pic with follower would have been a very basic facility
Your message is shown to everyone connected with you : what ever you share in facebook is available for everyone to read instantly whereas in twitter one has to follow you to be aware of what you are up to

A pic is better than thousand words : Facebook like orkut enables sharing of pic and video plus friends can comment on those pics/videos . I see people using this feature much more than simply putting text on their status of facebook

Other applications : There are so many application which facebook is enabling its users to use ranging from surveys, quizzes , games, sending gifts and so on . This keep users involved and also generates more comments and related discussion comments

Celebrity trust : Twitter generated initial buzz because of some of the celebrities choosing it to keep their followers updated but look facebook today and you would find so many of them are already present there.
Structure : The way twitter shows messages of people you follow looks messy and unstructured some times whereas facebook has put across a good structure of showing messages and clubbing related comments in the same discussion

Even though the ease of accessing twitter from mobiles can not be debated but with so many high end hand sets around I feel accessing facebook from mobile is also becoming a trend. If twitter does not come up with some thing better , I feel it may loose its grip over the user base within couple of years

This is where a mentor can do wonders by helping you streamline and focus your thoughts and giving you right inputs to not only start off but also go long way in the journey.

We have been seing this relationship since ages and its transformation can be observed from mythological to hitorical era.I would say the best ever mentor has to be Lord Krishna who directed Arjuna and helped him choose the right path. In history also we would find many such examples where mentorship has helped in developing immortal legends out of ordinary man. Ramkrishna transformed a curious child narendra into a monk who could create a new perception about India and its spritual philosophy in the world.
So what all a mentee expects from her mentor

1) Inspiration : The very basic need of doing something , one has to be inspired and charged up. The inspiration generated from other source is much more impact full than the one generated from within. Mentor must be able to light up inspiration in the mentee.

2) Deep expertise in the area : IT will be very rare to have someone mentor without being good expertise in the area where mentee is working. Mentor is supposed to know all and resolve the doubts of mentee with entire confidence.

3) Ability to explain with simplicity: Mentor should be able to make things simple for mentee in terms of the understanding , he is like a watchmaker who can diassociate all the parts of the watch and explain each and every one to his mentee.

Some trees were really very old and strong . These big trees were from various variety and size . They were around since ages and now many of the birds and animals have nests over them. As these trees grew they were expanded into mammoth structures with capturing maximum space and resources in their area. They absorbed whatever came near by their roots. Water , soil and light was equally absorbed by them . Because of such consumption it was impossible for any small sapling to grow under their shadows since they
could not get enough resources .

With more urbanisation around the normal life of jungle was also interfered in many ways ,The grand river in the jungle was used to waste disposal as well , some canals were created to take the contaminated and toxic waste to the river and central jungle for disposal. The greed of big
and arrogant trees was such that they started sucking much of such toxic waste equally. The birds who were supported by the trees or any one else could not notice any thing from outside but because of high intake of such wastes roots and foundation of the trees were contaminated , insects and hermits have started eating them up. It was a painless and slow process
which went unnoticed to every one.
As winters started , there came a strong storm . Unaware of the weakness which these trees had accumulated in their roots , they could not stand this storm and started falling one by one. It was a chaos in the jungle since these were old epitomes and supported the environment around them. Many animals and birds became home less , while falling these trees also destroyed smaller plants and bushes around them . Some who fall on another of their kind resulting fall of both trees. There was hardly any thing could be done about it. Lots of unfortunate damage was definitely caused and we all will surely miss the sweet fruits , the grand shelter , esteemed identity and magnanimity which was associated with these trees.
With in some time fallen trees will be covered in soil and provide good fertile base to other smaller plants to grow on them . The positive side is with their fall they left a large open area where new saplings would be able to grow freely now , there will be new breed of tree , may be stronger and more diverse. With this kind of evolution probably these new ones would avoid toxic waste and depend upon clean natural resources for growth .

( PS : With GM filling for chapter 11 today , It was heartbreaking to see such large organization getting annihilated in given crisis . Hopefully there will be new ones to take charge )
