This morning, Dec. 21, developers requesting a rezoning for the corner block of Lawndale and Cornwallis for Walgreens store withdrew their request. This is most welcome news for the neighborhood!
We thank all Greensboro residents from around the city who joined our neighborhood effort to oppose this development proposal. Many of you offered moral support and financial support to help cover our sign expenses. Some of you even attended our neighborhood meeting and became just as active in writing City Council members, writing letters to the Editor, and posting comments on this blog as those who reside in our immediate neighborhood. We are gratified by your willingness to work hard on our behalf, and we credit you for having elevated our local cause into a city-wide issue. We always believed this would be a test case for the new Council, and those of you who live in the broader Greensboro community have helped make it so. We believe that the plan was withdrawn because it would have faced certain defeat if it had come before the City Council. This turn of events is good news for our neighborhood and for other neighborhoods who feel vulnerable to the threat of commercial development where they live.

On Tuesday, Dec. 18, City Council will vote on a continuance of the vote on the Walgreens proposal to the January 15 meeting. Please attend this Tuesday for the vote on the continuance. Show up in person to reinforce all of the emails and letters Council members are receiving from the neighborhood and beyond. It puts faces with the words. It's very important for opponents to be there for the 5:30 meeting. Plan to arrive early. It should take less than 1/2 hour. Parking is free for one hour or less in the Greene Street Parking Deck.

Contact City Council members and the Mayor. Just click here to send an email to Mayor Johnson and all of City Council. Be sure the subject line gets your message across. The best thing is to send letters, but also phone calls work. Click here for addresses and phone numbers.

passing through this intersection. Imagine another 50 cars -- as projected by the traffic study -- during the afternoon rush trying to get through to the 15,000 square-foot Walgreens they want to put on this busy corner.

We had a very successful meeting on Tursday, Dec. 6. Over 85 people attended a briefing on the potential rezoning of the northeast corner block of Lawndale Dr. and Cornwallis Dr. Opposition to the Walgreens proposal by neighbors is intense and signs are going up.

We don't need another drug store

This map shows the 10 pharmacies located within 2.5 miles of the proposed Walgreens (6 within 1 mile!). As anyone can see, our neighborhood is already benefiting from plenty of competition. Adding another competitor isn't likely to improve the service or prices we enjoy today.

Please join us in launching an active opposition to this commercial mixed-use rezoning request in order to defeat it. The Greensboro Zoning Commission denied the request on Nov. 12, and now the developers are appealing that decision to the City Council.

We agree with the Zoning Staff that denial is appropriate for the following reasons:

The proposal is incompatible with the single family residential character of the neighborhood.

It will create significant negative impacts on the neighborhood.

It will create a destabilizing situation which will put pressure on additional residential lots to convert to nonresidential land uses.

It is located at an intersection which already experiences traffic circulation problems and heavy congestion.

This area is not lacking for commercial services within easy walking distance and there is plenty of existing development to accommodate the passing motorist.
