Children learn in multiple ways and their intelligence is developing continuously. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, developer of American Sign Language, saw that hearing children’s language development increased from the use of sign. This led him to believe that “the more varied the form under which language is presented to the mind through various senses, the more perfect will be the knowledge of it acquired, and the more permanently will it be retained.”

This multi-sensory approach to learning is recognized and embraced by My Smart Hands. Fascinated by the concept of using sign language to help promote literacy, Laura Berg, the founder of My Smart Hands, brought the theory back to the classrooms. Her success prompted her to lecture for teacher education programs at universities. Further into her research, she was introduced to the benefits of sign language for babies. This paved the way for My Smart Hands in 2005. Using her background on teaching as well as curriculum development, and armed with a post-graduate degree in Education and pre-interpreter’s degree, Laura developed the My Smart Hands curriculum.

My Smart Hands offers sign language and play classes for hearing babies and toddlers. It uses 100% American Sign Language. Classes were first offered in Canada, where Laura Berg resided. Today, with nearly 100 instructors providing the opportunity for families to sign with their babies, it has gained recognition in several countries, especially North America and Canada. Beneficiaries of My Smart Hands witnessed the benefits of signing, such as the decrease of frustration in babies, stronger parent-child bonding, and developed confidence. Meanwhile, the long-term effects of learning American Sign Language are higher levels of IQ and increased spelling skills and reading comprehension among children. Having been exposed to special education, Alaine Antonio, a graduate student of Special Education from the University of the Philippines, is familiar with sign language and its benefits. She discovered My Smart Hands in 2009 when she stumbled upon a video of a 12-month-old baby on the Internet.

Alaine passed on this information to her sister residing in Florida in the US, who then brought My Smart Hands into her home. Alaine’s nephew in the United States was her first teacher in sign language. He is only 2 years old and has been diagnosed to have cerebral palsy. Although her nephew is able to hear, he has a speech delay because of this diagnosis. However, he is still able to communicate effectively. He taught Alaine with his hands that although he has no voice, he is still able to speak. While children with disabilities benefit from this program, regular children reap the same benefits as well. Alaine witnessed during her trip overseas the remarkable effects of sign language on young children. When Alaine came back to the Philippines, she brought home a certification in American Sign Language and My Smart Hands, Asia.

Asian countries have several and diverse home languages. My Smart Hands, Asia allows learners to acquire the universal language of American Sign Language (ASL) without compromising their mother tongue. "I started teaching my daughter baby signs when she was about 7 months old. At first I got frustrated at first because I did not seem to be getting any positive feedback from her. Finally, when she was about 10 months old, she started doing the sign for light, which I did not teach her until the day that she started signing it. She loves to do the sign light and at 13 months, still does it all the time. Once she started signing light, it was only about two weeks until she started doing five more signs: dog, milk, eat, bye-bye, and snow. The Risq Grand Summer Fashion Show will happen at the same time as Go Negosyo’s 3rd Women Entrepreneurship Summit and Expo.

RISQ is a search for the best student designers who will become the “New stars in summer lifestyle fashion”.

The competition is open to students of fashion design, fashion merchandising or fashion management programs who have a passion for creating stylish practical designs and understand the pulse of today’s fashion.

Contestants are challenged to take the risk of designing a complete wardrobe collection for men and women which consists of only 11 sets that sophisticated clients can take on a summer weekend holiday. It should be fashion forward, provocative, compact, and practical. The collection must be versatile enough to clothe the clients in style from morning ‘til evening - from the resort to the beach to the water.

The contestants will have a chance to work with experts to bring their vision to life. They shall undergo a mentoring session about styling, trends and retailing business with fashion industry experts such as Alcs Porras, Delby Bragais, and Hindy Tantoco, who will also serve as the panel of judges.

The competition shall culminate in a grand gala finale fashion show and awarding ceremony in front of a live audience comprised of local and international press, buyers, celebrities, fashion bloggers and VIPs. It will be held on March 4, 2011 at the World Trade Center Manila.

The winning designer will receive a whopping cash prize of One Hundred Fifty Thousand Pesos (P150,000) gift certificates from sponsors, a business start-up kit, a feature in a major broadsheet and a fashion magazine; he or she will also be given a chance to showcase the winning collection in a prominent shopping establishment (total value of prizes and details being finalized).

For the fashion show and exhibit, the contestants will also be working closely with top production professionals who are highly regarded in their own expertise--from image consultants, photographers, event managers, technical experts, and models. Adding even more muscle to our production team are choreographers Christian Marco of Hotlegs, Riel Balan of The Manoeuvres; lighting director Joseph Matheu; production set designer Eric Cruz; production head Janice Dee; and multi awarded playwright Mr. Floy Quintos as director.

4. A participant needs to be at least 18 years old by the time of the draw to be able to claim the prize, in case drawn as winner.

5. One promo code entered is equivalent to one promo entry.

6. Promo period is from December 14, 2010 - February 14, 2011.

7. February 14, 2011 at 12 midnight is the last day to enter a promo code to earn a raffle coupon entry.

II. Prizes

1. Roundtrip tickets good for two (2) persons from Manila to Europe. Two (2) tickets approximately cost P 72,000.00.

2. Taxes and fuel surcharge indicated on the ticket shall be shouldered by the winner. Visa processing fees shall also be at the account of winner.

3. Roundtrip tickets for two (2) is valid within sixty (60) days upon receipt of the winner's registered mail notification.

4. The tax requirement for the prize (20% exceeding P10,000) shall be shouldered by KLM.

III. Drawing of Winners

1. KLM, National Book Store, Powerbooks and NetBooster Representatives together with the DTI Representative will electronically draw the winner randomly.

2. A system will randomly choose the unique promo code entered on the website, from NetBooster Agency Asia's database. 3. The winning promo code with the corresponding name, mobile number, birthday, email and registered address entered is qualified to win two (2) roundtrip tickets from Manila to Europe.

4. The raffle will be on March 11, 2011, 5:00PM at 2004 Antel Corporate Center, 121 Valero St. Salcedo Village, Makati City

IV. Notification of Winnings:

1. KLM will notify the winner via SMS, e-mail and registered mail. A print out of the e-mail and/or copy of the notification sent to the winner's registered mail shall serve as proof of winning.

V. Redemption:

1. A person can enter as much promo code as he/she wants to increase chances of winning. The two roundtrip tickets can be claimed at 39th floor, Yuchengco Tower, RCBC Plaza corner Sen. Gil Puyat and Ayala Avenues, Makati City.

2. The winner shall present his/her valid identification card with picture and print out of the e-mail and/or the registered mail notification upon claiming the prize.

3. Redemption period shall be within sixty (60) days from date of receipt of the registered mail notification.

4. The prize is transferable to any person to be assigned/designated by the legitimate winner.

VI. Prize Forfeiture:

1. The winning prize can be redeemed within sixty (60) days from the date of receipt of the registered mail notification. It will be allocated and saved under the winner's name and information until the time the winner claims the prize.

VII. Disqualification

1. Employees of KLM, NetBooster Asia, Yellowasp, National Bookstore and Powerbooks including their relatives up to second degree of consanguinity or affinity are disqualified from joining the promotion.

3. Discounts can be identified by the customers through a color coding scheme except for the following:

a. Titles with no sticker have a discount of 20%.

4. A sticker will be placed near the price tag of the book, identifying the discount.
