There are so many reasons to establish Tesla as a Natural Reserve, including protecting its irreplaceable bio-diversity, natural resource values, and Tribal Cultural Landscape. As public land that has not yet been opened to the public, and which is not limited by prior uses, Tesla is the place to actually achieve multiple state policy priorities. It is the chance to put words, that are too often platitudes, into real action. Tesla as a Reserve will provide meaningful 30×30 protection, protect a critical linkage habitat corridor, provide landscape level protection for multiple critical habitats. It will not only provide the best protection for specific archeological cultural features, but also the entire tribal cultural landscape that encompasses its 3,100 acres. And it will provide for low-intensity recreation that is soft on the land and protective of its extraordinary natural and cultural resources.

We need to change State Parks concept plans, which are to jam as much high-intensity development and uses into Tesla’s sensitive integrated ecosystem as possible, even though such uses will damage the ecosystem, and there are nearby alternative for such impactful uses.

Help us convince State Parks to change course. Join our work and make Earth Day truly meaningful.

In late September, State Parks held 2 workshops to present their concept plans for Tesla. Unfortunately, neither plan protects Tesla’s outstanding natural, cultural, historic and scenic resources of statewide significance, and nor do they ensure effective and lasting protection. Both plans include high-intensity recreation, such as vehicular travel, bikes/e-bikes, and camping and associated facilities development throughout almost all of Tesla’s 3,100 acres. Neither plan is consistent with the State Natural Reserve statute. Both plans ignore the overwhelming public input supporting Tesla be established as a Natural Reserve.

Natural Reserve classification is the only classification option that best protects all of Tesla’s irreplaceable natural and cultural resources, while still allowing resource compatible low-intensity recreation.

The large alliance of local, regional and statewide groups that has been fighting to preserve Tesla for decades submitted a detailed comment letter documenting the deficiencies in the State Parks concept plans. We oppose the plans and call for State Parks to provide a real plan for a Natural Reserve based on the scientific evidence, tribal direction, and overwhelming public input. Read the comment letter here.
