Center for American Progress calls for Foreclosure Help

With concern building over troubles in the mortgage industry, a liberal think tank on Monday said the federal government should take new steps to protect low-income homeowners at risk of foreclosing.

The Center for American Progress said the government should consider grants to expand mortgage aid and foreclosure prevention programs for families falling behind on their monthly payments. Up to 2.2 million families around the country could lose their homes to foreclosure in the coming years, according to a 2006 report by the Durham, N.C-based Center for Responsible Lending.

While it seemed during the hot housing market of the past few years, almost anyone with a pulse and job could qualify for a mortgage.

Now Federal Reserve Governor Susan Bies said on Thursday looser underwriting standards were partly responsible for recent rises in late mortgage payments and that lenders should tighten risk management practices. The full article can be read here.

Make sure that you're comfortable with you proposed payment before you buy a home. Otherwise, you might just be getting in over your head.
