Spending Victory: I spent less than $200 on two pairs of glasses!

A few years back I wrote about spending A TON of money on new glasses. Well, it came time to get a new pair, and thankfully this time I did a much better job saving money. Now there are tons of places that offer affordable glasses online, and they even let you try them on before purchasing. I decided to go with these from Warby Parker.

The process was really easy, and they were very concerned about making sure my prescription was perfect. I used their online app to measure my pupillary distance and double checked with a measuring tape.

I had always ordered thinner lenses with special coatings and it was crazy expensive. With Warby Parker, they offer thinner lenses for $30 extra. They will only use thinner lenses if it is necessary for your prescription, and it turns out, I didn't even need them. My glasses cost $95 total and my lenses look totally normal. I'm so annoyed that I had been paying $300 for special lenses all these years when it wasn't even needed.

To top it off, I received $7.50 back from using Ebates, though unfortunately it doesn't look like that it available anymore.

As a backup pair of glasses, I ordered from Coastal (they are still offering 5% back through Ebates) and spent a whopping $14!

I needed an eye exam, so that adds an additional $60 to the total, but I am still SO happy with my new glasses and I'm thrilled it didn't cost me $800 like last time...

Using Your Smartphone to Earn Rewards

I love using Shopkick to earn gift cards to Starbucks and Target. It just takes a few seconds to check-in to stores like Target, Macy's, Sony, and American Eagle.

I mostly just use it to check-in, but sometimes I'll hunt Target and scan items for extra kicks. I've even gotten my mom and husband addicted to the app as well. And honestly, the fact that my husband is willing to use it should be quite the endorsement - he is not at all interested in most of the apps I use for rewards.

Amazon Prime vs. Netflix

We got rid of cable years ago, and for the most part, we haven't really missed it. We used Netflix for streaming television and movies and it was more than enough. At the beginning of the year, I decided to switch from Netflix to Amazon Prime.

It is slightly cheaper over the course of the year ($79 vs $96) and has the additional benefit of free two-day shipping from Amazon. Plus, you can borrow one ebook a month. I'm bummed that I missed some of the Netflix exclusive shows, but I think that I will continue to stick with Amazon Prime.

I have downloaded quite a few money saving apps to my phone, and I want to share Endorse with you guys. Each week there are different items that qualify for cash back, up to 100%. If you buy the item, you upload your receipt and then receive the cash in your account. You can transfer it to PayPal with no minimum payout.

Last week it featured 100% off any brand of coffee, up to $3. I used it to treat myself to Starbucks and the money is already in my PayPal account.

You need to login with Facebook, and sometimes need to share deals for a higher percentage. Don't worry, you can set it to private so you don't have to bother your friends.

Well, I realize that I only caught up with November a few days ago, but since it is January 1st, and I am filled with New Year's excitement, here we go:

Swagbucks was still a struggle in December, but I earned $20 in Amazon gift certificates. However, I just downloaded the app to my Kindle Fire, so I hope that helps to boost my earnings.

I made a few more sales on Etsy.

Total: $40

I got a referral payment on Beso.

Total: $2.76

I earned a $5 Amazon giftcard on Recyclebank and $10 in Amazon giftcards from a Visa promotion.

Grand Total: $77.76

Extra Income: October 2012

Unfortunately, October was nowhere near as exciting as previous months. It started out incredibly sad and stressful when we found out that our dog would need surgery, and then it ended hiding out from a hurricane. I am hopeful that November will be better!

I definitely lost my mojo with Swagbucks this month. I only was able to max out on the $5 Amazon gift cards ($25).

However, I am very excited with some changes being made to prize redemption. Basically the "price" of most of the gift cards has been lowered. I think this will change my strategy for the coming month. Plus the daily tracker is back, and I find myself a lot more motivated with those incentives.

I also made some cash ($3) on other survey sites.

Total: $3

I also sold a book on Amazon, and added $7 in cash.

Total: $7

Grand Total: $45

Compared to the past few months, this is very sad.
