1. You can set this service up on your router.  When you do this every computer in your home is instantly protected.  Even if they have friends over that connect to your internet then their computer is protected too.
2. You can set this service up on individual machines.  By changing the dns settings on your child's device, no matter where they go they are protected.
3. Automatic updates.  No hassle with updating software.  Because this happens in the cloud you never have to deal with the software being out of date and your kids finding a way through the system.
4. It may speed up your internet.  Many internet providers use slow dns servers.  This being an alternate dns may make your surfing experience faster.

Of course the best part about this is that it is free.  The company who offers it is called OpenDNS and has been in the industry for a long time.  The fact that they offer this service for free has made it popular with school systems and many other child centered services.  The set up is pretty easy, although if you have any problems I probably would not let your kids help you.

The FBI has issued warnings that hackers have been setting up fake wifi hotspots in the parking lots where there is paid for hotel wifi. While it seems that all is well and good on the consumers end the scam hotspot is actually a keylogger that monitors your entire time on the connection and will give the information you type on your keyboard back to the hacker.  So if you log into your email or bank account the hacker gets the passwords.  To top that off hackers are also checking into rooms for the night and setting up hotspots inside the hotel that are open and are named after a rewards program or some other name that looks legit.

To combat this possibility we have to be smart about what networks we connect to.  As someone who as traveled a lot over the last couple of years I know how tempting it can be to connect to the free hotspot.  So if you are in a hotel that charges here are some options:

• Connect through your phone - if you have an Android phone then for $15 one time you can purchase an app calle PDANet.  It allows you to tether your phone through a usb cable.  With wireless networks getting faster and faster this is a great alternative to the daily charge from the hotel.  If you have a blackberry or iPhone you can still connect but you will have to purchase a tether plan from your service provider
• Go to McDonald's - OK so you can go to Starbucks or Panera if you want.  The point is there are tons of free wifi hotspots out there you just have to go find them.  While the list is not comprehensive a good site to check out for free hotspots is WifiFreeSpot.com
• Use the Hotel Wifi - You can of course just pay the hotel for the service.  Some hotels will give you free wifi if you sign up for the rewards program. This seems like a no brainer to me since I want to get my rewards points.

So while you are out exploring the world make sure you hotel wifi is legit or you may find yourself on the not so fun end of a hotel wifi scam.

For the past few years we have seen prices stabilize in both the mobile industry and in the cable internet industry.  During this time period of price stabilization the speed of data has more than tripled and the number of users of high speed internet has increased to a point where most of America has access to some form of high speed internet.  With the cellular industry reaching a point of saturation for voice service they have started to push into data services and pulling customers away from traditional internet providers.  Essentially the cellular companies fired the first shot and it took big cable a while to respond but now they are throwing down the gauntlet.

It is hard to understand how much of a blow this could be to cellular data plans without knowing how dense the hotspot footprint will be from these five cable companies.  To put 50,000 wifi hotspots in perspective, if you put a hotspot at every Wal-Mart, Target, Sears, KMart, Walgreen's, CVS, Rite Aid, Kroger, JC Penney, and Best Buy location you would have about 30,000 wifi hotspots.  What makes this most impressive is that the footprint would not be nationwide but only in the areas where these five companies are locaed.  If Charter, Cable One and a few other large cable companies got in on the deal we could see this balloon to 75-100,000 hotspots very easily.

So what does this mean for you?  It should mean that data plans for cell phones will go down in price.  Imagine if you lived in one of the territory of one of these cable companies.  With that many hotspots available would you need a data plan on your cell phone?  Or, could you just jump from your internet at home to internet at work to internet at every where else you go?  Taking into account all the places you can now get free wifi (McDonals's, Panera Bread, etc.) you may never be too far away from a data connection.  This should put great downward pressure on the pricing of cellular data plans and as data for one industry becomes cheaper it puts downward pressure on the other industry.  The big winner in all of this is you!

Through Me On The Ground Tough - Polycarbonate is an amazingly tough and light material that can used for bulletproof glass and a ton of other items. These cases tend to be bulky but they will take an absolute beating.  Sales reps at different locations are actually taught to toss their phone on the floor to demonstrate how great the polycarbonate cases are.  There are three main manufacturers that make the best phone cases for this category:

• Otterbox - the most well known of the group and they produce cases for just about anything mobile.  This includes tablets and notebook computers.
• Griffin - A series called the survivor series is the first to really compete with Otterbox
• Incipio- A nice case that also includes a great credit card holder.

Oops! I Fell Out of Your Pocket Tough - Maybe you do not have the destructive forces that I do living in your home but you do carry your device with you most places and are worried about a moderate drop onto the floor or concrete.  The best bets for this level are plastic or carbon fiber cases.  These cases will require that you get a screen protector.  The best phone cases in this category are the Case-Mate Barely There casese, the Incipio Feather Ultralight, and the Element Carbon Fiber Back Plate.

I Might Break a Nail Tough - If you are looking for something to keep your phone from getting scratched or a minor drop your best bet is a silicone case.  They are super inexpensive and your best bet for anyone of these type of cases will be on Ebay where they sell them for less than a dollar.
