The LED lights are pricier but it is advertised that these will last longer than CFL bulbs. Also, they consume less energy than CFL bulbs.

Here is an LED bulb that's an equivalent of the 60 Watts incandescent bulb. The CFL bulb I was previously using was only 13W (60W equivalent) but this LED bulb is only using 7W. About half the energy compared to the CFL bulb.

LED bulb turned on. The color temperature of this bulb is daylight.

I have also changed the lights in my dining room and also used LED bulbs. Each of these only uses 3W compared to my original bulbs where it's 60W each.

Dining room lamp turned on.

The color temperature of my dining room light is soft white and it is much brighter than the 60W incandescent bulbs that I had in there before.

This is one of the PAR30 flood lights that I used in my family room. These are the most expensive ones because I wanted a daylight temperature in the family room and the only one available at that time I installed these is the one by Philips. The light is also dimmable but does not work well with my previous dimmer. I had to buy a dimmer specifically for dimmable CFL/LED bulbs.

Here is the flood light when it is on. The light only uses 13W and it is the equivalent of t 75W PAR30 halogen bulb. I believe I had 60W installed previously. The light is very nice to our liking but beam of the light is not that wide, maybe in a few more months something will come out and I can move these flood lights somewhere.
The last time (last year - see post about Please Touch Museum) we went to a children's museum, the kids and including me and my wife had lots of fun. Visiting DCM also provided lots of fun and learning experience. Even though DCM is not as big as Please Touch Museum, there were a lot of activities for the kids (and adults) to enjoy. The kids had a blast and they are looking forward to going back at DCM.

So, similar to what I did when we visited Please Touch Museum, I started looking for what they are doing for recycling. And just what I expected, the museum also recycles and you will see several recycling bins around the museum. Their recycling bins are shown below.

I thought I was done for the day, until I saw the Eco House. The Eco House is a very informative area in DCM and has details on ways of helping save our planet. It shows what can be done in a house to make it more Eco-friendly.

The first thing I saw was the living roof. You can see plants on the roof of the Eco House.

The Eco House also has posters like this that explains how it helps the environment and the benefits. As you can see on the poster, there can be two types of living roofs and It's Alive!

Here's a picture of another part of the Eco House which shows the roof structure made of branches/twigs.

Inside the Eco House, there are several items you can use around your house that can be powered by the sun.

These are the items that are solar-powered. You don't need to pay for electricity since the sun's energy is free.

The Eco House also suggests Eco-Friendly building materials for your home: siding made from wood that's environmentally certified; insulation made from recycled newspapers and bricks. Using Eco-friendly materials for your house helps save the Earth's resources.

Another material that can be used in a house is Bamboo. I never knew that Bamboo can be rapidly renewed. I learned at the Eco House that Bamboo can grow 48 inches per day to as much as 39 inches in an hour. Bamboo can be used as hardwood flooring and furniture.

Here is another thing I learned. I also never knew that Linoleum is Eco-Friendly and can be rapidly renewed. I thought that Linoleum was some sort of a plastic product.

Using Rapidly Renewable Resources is a big help in preserving our planet. It uses less space, produces less waste and we don't have to wait a long time for it to grow back (like trees).

The Eco House also has information about using Geothermal for Heating and Cooling. I heard from my co-worker that the initial cost is expensive to have it installed in a home but if you're planning to stay for a while, it will be worth it. You don't have to worry about the electricity to cool the house in the summer months and fluctuating price of natural gas, oil or propane to heat up the house during winter time.

Also around the Eco House, there are several items made from recycled products. Aside from helping save the environment, these items can also make your Eco House beautiful.

This bird feeder was made from recycled plastic bottles.

I hope you have learned something from the Eco House. I really did learn a lot and it would be nice to see these materials/items being used more and more so we can do our part in saving our precious resources.

TerraCycle Brigades (CapriSun, etc.) - 10/6 update

Apologies for not being able to post for a while, here's an update regarding the TerraCycle recycling program. Aside from the CapriSun/Drink Pouch Brigade, our team added new brigades to the program. We have added the following: Chip Bag Brigade, Writing Instruments Brigade, and Elmers Glue Clue Brigade.

The picture below, there were about 12 bags that contains drink pouches, chip bags, writing instruments, glue containers and glue sticks.
These items was the toughest one to do because of the volume and the number of items. From the picture below, you will see a big Lay's chips bag. I just found out that the school also signed up for the Chip Bag Brigade. While sorting out the pouches, I also saw pens and glue sticks. These are for the Writing Instruments Brigade and Elmer's Glue-Crew Brigade. There were around 15 bags that I have to go through.

I started putting the pouches in the box. I separated the other items into a different box. I'll take some pictures of them when I'm ready to send those items.

I was able to fill out 2 boxes. Brought the boxes to a nearby UPS store for shipping. One weighed 19.2 pounds while the other is 12.1 pounds.

The bin looks like this in case you want to bring your plastic bags for recycling while you're there shopping for good deals.

Plastic bag recycling bin

On top of the recycling bin, I found a flier about Kohl's commitment in helping to keep our environment clean. The flier also suggests a few things a customer can do in order to help.

While at the store, I also found an interesting book (see link below) at the Kohl's Cares for Kids area. It is one of their items for their Kohl's Cares for Kids program and I bought one. I just glanced at a few pages of the book but haven't read it entirely. I got it for only 5 dollars, which is a steal and I am hopping I may learn some other ways on helping to save our environment. But the other reason why I bought the book is that the Kohl's Cares for Kids program donates 100% of the net profit to support children's health and education initiatives nationwide. Ah, I just shot two birds with one stone... just a figure of speech. (No birds or animals were harmed while writing this post.)
I received 12 bags and worked on putting the pouches into the boxes so I can send them to Terracycle.

12 bags of CapriSun pouches

We used a copy paper box just like before to hold the pouches

Here is the 1st box filled with CapriSun pouches.

Filled 2 boxes on the left (white). I need some more pouches to fill the 3rd box (red).

These 2 boxes are ready to be shipped.

Covered the boxes and attached the pre-paid UPS shipping labels.

I have dropped the two boxes to a nearby UPS store.

Just like what I said before, Terracycle pays for the shipping and they also pay the charity 2 cents per pouch.

Terracycle already received the 2 boxes above. I am currently working on finishing up the 3rd box (red). I'll post a couple more pictures once I'm done.

Plastic Bag Recycling Bins - Home Depot and Wawa

A couple more stores/businesses that provide bins for plastic bag recycling.

Home Depot stores can be found around the U.S. and they also have presence on other countries. According to their website, "The Home Depot has 1972 convenient locations throughout the United States (including the territories of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands), Canada, China and Mexico."
Wawa stores can be found in the Northeastern side of the U.S. (portions of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia). It's a convenience store similar to 7-Eleven but they also have Gasoline Stations.
Luckily, my children's school decided to start one and I volunteered in helping them out.

They have asked me if I could assist in packing the pouches and sending them to Terracycle. The school will receive $0.02 per pouch and plan to use the money to refurbish the school's playground (similar to their Paper Recycling activity).

As you can see below, the school was able to gather several bags of CapriSun pouches. There were 10 bags of pouches and I went through each bag flattening each pouch and putting them in the shipping box.
Shipping to Terracycle is free if you are a member of a brigade and you have an account on their site. You can just login to your account and print out a pre-paid UPS shipping label. Then, drop off the package to any UPS store and you can also track the package on the UPS website.

I was able to fill two more boxes with the remaining 5 bags. All of the boxes have been shipped and confirmed that they were received on by Terracycle. The boxes are a bit heavy... maybe around 8 to 10 pounds each. I should have weighed each one of them before shipping them out.

Lastly, I hope the school earns a lot from this recycling activity so they can make their school playground safer.

Paper Recycling - PaperRetriever.com

My kids school started a paper recycling drive during the start of the school year. They are trying to raise money to upgrade the school's playground. In order to do this, they obtained recycling bins from PaperRetriever.com to be able to collect the used paper products.

The recycling bin looks like this and has a picture of a dog carrying a paper. This is the back of the bin and shows a large sign that says "Make Every Page Count. Recycle Paper Here."

The school had a paper drive week last month and asked each student to bring used paper for recycling. The total weight of collected paper amounted to 6836 pounds. That is about 3 1/2 (short) tons of paper from about 600 students.

We contributed about 80 pounds of paper and old magazines for that week. The drive helped me clear out old bills, statements and magazines stacked in my home office. Most of my bills are now electronic ever since I switch paperless. Here is a previous post about paperless billing and it has the sign-up links for banks, utilities, etc.

One note though. I did shred those bills with confidential information before sending them to school (shredding helps in protecting your identity).

The school's paper drive is still ongoing. All of our junk mail and other paper products are now going to this drive. My regular recycling bin is a little lighter now since I don't put any paper there anymore.

Pathmark (recycling and reusable bags)

We dropped by a local Pathmark supermarket near our house and I found a plastic bag recycling bin in the store. Pathmark stores are in the Northeastern side of the United States and most of their stores are in the states of New York, New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Here is what the plastic bag recycling bin looks like. It's similar to what I found in Staples and Lowe's.
Pathmark also offers reusable bags for 99 cents each and they have several designs as shown below. I found their reusable bags sturdy as compared to other reusable bags. It also appeals to nature lovers since the designs have plants and animals on them.

Zzzzzz..... head dozing off early in the morning. The cup of coffee I took before leaving home is not kicking in my system.

Coffee... I need COFFEE!!!!

So, I head down the cafeteria and grabbed a cup of Starbucks coffee. After a few sips, WOO HOO!!! I'm feeling the caffeine flowing through my veins and now I'm refreshed and energized.

I then noticed something on the coffee sleeve. It said "Starbucks is committed to reducing our environmental impact through increased use of post-consumer recycled materials. Help us help the planet." Also written are the following:

60% post-consumer fiber sleeve
First-ever 10% post-consumer fiber cup

I then looked at the cup and I found the information about the recycled part. Also, the lid that they are using are recyclable. Below are the pictures that I took to show the details of the recycled/recyclable parts.
This is a good thing and I hope the other coffee cup makers and coffee shops will follow Starbucks lead on this.

I just found information regarding the Cup Recycling program at Starbucks by Global Green USA at sustainablog.org. There are lot of very interesting information written by Cindy Tickle. Please visit this link for the full article.

But if you really want to help the environment, a better choice is to use a reusable mug (similar to the pictures shown below) to drink your coffee, tea or other beverage of your choice. You will not produce any waste and you can reuse the mug everytime you want a refreshing drink... just don't forget to clean it after each use. :)

The 1st part of the video is about billboards. One billboard uses the sun to show that the sea level is rising. Then it shows how the Philippines is recycling billboards to bags. I was in the Philippines last June 2008 and I saw a lot of billboards along EDSA (Epifanio de los Santos Avenue) and C-5 (Circumferential Road 5). The billboards are huge and there are several of them on different roads around Metro Manila. From what I heard, the billboards are changed frequently and with the Philippine presidential election coming in 2010, there will be more billboards to be put up.

The video also shows Terracycle. A few months ago, I wrote that Terracycle is recycling Caprisun pouches into bags and other products. You can view my previous post using this link.

The next parts of the video are about energy efficiency and innovations. It features T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, VA. where they recycle rain water and shows that their school building have solar panels and energy efficient roof and windows.

The Empire State Building's plan for energy consumption is also featured. The plan is to install energy efficient lighting, upgrade the windows and install new heating and cooling systems. These activities will provide around 38% reduction in energy consumption for the one of the most known building in the world.

I have noticed something different when we got there. I saw recycling bins around the hospital (see pictures below). The bins are big and green and has a sign at the top for cans and bottles. At the bottom part of the bin, there is a big art work that encourages recycling.

It is a great idea to put the big art work as it attracts attention. Also, the hospital's patients are children and the art work helps to instill the idea of recycling to the young minds.

We were there on the first week of June for the initial eye checkup and I did not see these bins back then. I'm pretty sure that they were not there because my eyes are really trained now for finding anything about recycling or recyclables.
My company changed the brand of our copy paper to the Staples brand. I happened to notice that we are now using a 30% recycled paper (see below).

Several Staples copy papers stacked.

I checked the Staples package further and found the 30% recycled mentioned everywhere.

(front)

At the back of the packaging, there are several choices of papers and I found that there are 4 choices for recycled papers:

1. Copy Paper - 30% recycled PCW (Post-Consumer Waste)
2. Copy Paper - 100% recycled PCW
3. Multipurpose Paper - 50% recycled PCW
4. Multipurpose Paper - 100% recycled PCW

Another good thing that they mention is that the package that they use is recyclable (see bottom right below).

(back - types of paper)

Also at the back of the Staples brand paper are some recycling information. It mentions that "The average American uses more than 655 pounds of paper every year." It also has a table that shows how recycled papers help the environment.

(back - recycled content info)

Here's what the table above says:
30% recycled paper
- 30% fewer trees used
- 13% less energy used
- 11% fewer greenhouse gas emissions
- 14% less water used

50% recycled paper
- 50% fewer trees used
- 19% less energy used
- 19% fewer greenhouse gas emissions
- 23% less water used

100% recycled paper
- 100% fewer trees used
- 42% less energy used
- 37% fewer greenhouse gas emissions
- 46% less water used

I never knew that my office use recycled paper since I only go to the Photocopy room occasionally and I don't print out a lot of documents. I also haven't noticed that the previous brand (Hammermill) that we were using was also a recycled paper (see below).

(front)

As you can see, even though there is a big recycling sign at the middle of the packaging, the 30% PCW can only be found at the bottom right and the sign is also small. Unlike the Staples brand, 'recycled paper' is not mentioned anywhere on the packaging. Some people might interpret the big recycling sign on the Hammermill brand as 'it can be recycled' instead of 'recycled paper.'

The Hammermill brand also shows its environment friendly side by giving a tip at the back of its packaging. It says "Planting a tree on Arbor Day helps ensure trees will be around for generations."

(back)

Should you decide to go recycled on your paper, look up the PCW percentage on the packaging. Also, when printing or photocopying, use both sides of the paper. It minimize waste and will also save you some money.

Eco-friendly DVD case

I got a copy of the Watchmen DVD last Friday and noticed something different with it's case when I removed the DVD (see below).
The DVD case is called an Eco-box because as you can see, the case is made with less plastic. The white area that you see on the recycle logo and the DVD holder is actually the back of the paper used for the DVD design/details.

I remember seeing this Eco-box before from my Incredible Hulk DVD. I was thinking of writing up something back then but I got busy and forgot all about it. Thanks to the Watchmen DVD and I remembered this Earth friendly DVD case.
It is an eco-friendly USB thumb drive. The casing is made from bamboo instead of the usual plastic case. The design is very simple but it's very well crafted.

I remember attending a virtual conference last February and the theme is about "Green IT". This might be one of the giveaways for that virtual conference or maybe I just got lucky.
I received a comment from one of the readers that you need to bring a printout of the APC announcement to be able to avail the free UPS or battery recycling at Staples. They used to charge $10 per piece and the free recycling promotion ends on September 30, 2009.

I went to a local Staples store last week and found out that they also have recycling bins for cellphones, pager, handhelds and plastic bags.

You can also generate money for your school by establishing a Drink Pouch Brigade. You can visit/sign-up at their website to start the brigade. According to the CapriSun box (as shown below), you can earn $0.02 per donated pouch.
Upon reaching home, I noticed the side of Burger King's brown bags (see photo on the right). It says "Be Good To Mother Earth!" and has some tips on ways of saving energy. The bag is also made from 100% recycled paper.

As for the energy saving tips, it says:

Turn of lights, TV, and computer when not in use.

Help adults recycle cans, bottles, bags and newspapers.

Don't leave water running when brushing your teeth.

Walk or bike with your family instead of using the car.

It seems that the tips are directed for kids and it's a good thing because they can be trained early.

The bag also has an icon of a person throwing a trash in a trash bin. This promotes cleanliness and instills that trash should be properly disposed.

Please Touch Museum Recycles

Last Sunday, we went to the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia, PA. This museum has a lot of activities for kids (and adults) to enjoy. My kids had fun during the visit and they keep on reminding me to go back there again.

During our visit, I noticed that they have recyclable bins available throughout the place. The bins look like this and can be easily found because of their big signs.

Upon entering the museum, you will see the Liberty Arm & Torch (as shown below) at the center of the museum. This is about 40 feet tall and was made from discarded playthings.
There was also a room behind the Liberty Arm and Torch that displays miniature buildings made from used styrofoam materials (items that came from TV and appliance boxes, etc.). I didn't get a chance to take a picture of it and I checked their website but they don't have any information about it. I'm guessing that it may be a temporary exhibit.

If you are in the Philadelphia area, check out the Please Touch Museum. The kids (and adults) will surely have fun during your visit.

Being Green Bookmark

I found this bookmark one day at home and Daniel brought him from school. The "It's Easy Being GREEN!" is on one side and has easy to follow things that will make you be Green. The "Green Numbers" on the side is a multiple choice question for kids (and adults) to answer. I just scanned both sides and placed it side-by-side on the picture.

The bookmark is from Scholastic Publishing and I think it's a good thing to let kids know of how easy it is being green. The details of the bookmark is as follows:

It's Easy Being GREEN! side:
- Don't take more food than you are able to eat.
- Turn out the light when leaving a room
- Walk, rollerblade, skateboard or ride your bike when possible.
- Turn off your computer or put it in sleep mode when you aren't using it.
- Turn the water off when brushing your teeth.

GREEN NUMBERS side (try to answer these questions):
1. Number of hours a TV could be powered from the energy saved from one recycled tin can:
a. 3 b. 15 c. 1 d. 10

2. Amount of water, in gallons, that you could save each day by turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth:
a. 30 b. 5 c. 10 d. 3

3. Number of people, in millions, that could be fed by edible food that ends up in U.S. landfills each year:
a. 15 b. 6 c. 1 d. 49

4. Amount of oil, in gallons, that is saved for every ton of recycled paper:
a. 105 b. 380 c. 505 d. 240

5. Number, in millions of tons, of e-waste (TVs, computers, etc.) that Americans do not bring to recycling centers each year:
a. 15 b. 1 c. 40 d. 2

Answers:
1. a 2. c 3. d 4. b 5.d

Now that we know what the answers are, we are more aware of what we can do to help save our environment.
