9 Smart Ways You Can Spend Your 13th Month Pay this Year

It’s the time of the year again when 13^th month is here. You may have a list of ideas on how you’re going to spend it but hinay-hinay lang kapatid. There’s nothing wrong in buying your wants with your extra cash but if you want a change then you might want to think again and become a wise spender. Here are 9 smart ways you can spend your 13th month pay and get the most out of your bonus this year.

Under Presidential Decree 851 also known as the 13^th Month Law additional monetary benefit for employees from their employers must be given to enable a better Christmas and New Year celebration to the labor force.
According to www.payrollhero.ph all rank and file employees regardless of their designation or employment status who have rendered at least one month during the calendar year are entitled to a 13^th month year. The 13^th month pay shall be in the amount not less than 1/12 of the total basic salary earned by the employee within the calendar day.
In 2015 a higher tax exemption for 13^th month pay was pushed. Employees whose 13^th Month Pay is below 82,000pesos will not be taxed. However if your 13^th Month Pay surpassed the 82,000pesos bench mark you need to pay 30% tax.
Basic salary includes the earnings paid by an employer to an employee for services rendered. This does not include allowance, monetary benefits or any amount outside the employee’s regular pay. For example Juan’s basic salary is 21,000pesos with 2,000 transportation and meal allowance. Only the 21,000pesos is considered in the computation of 13^th month.
Here’s a sample of computation of 13^th month pay based on different employee types:
- If the employee completed one calendar year to the company he/she is entitled for an amount equals to one month of his/her salary.

Monthly Pay: 21,000

13^th Month Pay: 21,000

If the employee is new to the company he/she is entitled for a 13^th month as long as he/she spent a one month service to the company. The computation with be:

Monthly Pay: 21,000

Number of Months Served: 6

6/12months x 21,000

13^th Month Pay: 10,500

If the employee is resigned he/she is entitled for a 13^th month pay depending on the number of months he/she served the company.

Monthly Pay: 21,000

Number of Months Served before resignation: 9

9/12months x 21,000

13^th Month Pay: 15,750

If the employee have multiple employers he/she is entitled for 13^th month from of his/her private employees with the same computation if he/she completed the calendar year, a new employee or a resigned employee. In case you are working in the government and works part-time to a private company you will only receive a 13^th month pay from your private employer.
If you are on Maternity Leave you are entitled for a 13^th month pay based on the number of months you rendered before you filed your leave. You will still receive two-month worth of salary.

Now that we have covered almost everything you need to know about 13^th Month Pay let’s now reveal the smart use of 13^th Month. Know that 13^th Month happens only once a year so better to think wisely on how you’ll spend it. Here are my 9 smart ways you can spend your 13th month pay.

1. Buy/Spend for your hobby

We all have that one activity we excel at. Whether it be calligraphy, hosting, singing, dancing or blogging. Your 13^th Month will definitely be useful if you invest on new tools or upgrade your existing equipment. Take for example buying a better camera for your blog photography. This will definitely make your blog stand out more. You can also use your 13^th month to take online class or seminars that could hone your skills more. There’s nothing wrong in rewarding yourself as long as there is right balance between everything.

3. Take a trip out-of-town or abroad

Cross one of your bucket list and go for a weekend getaway local or abroad. Many revealed how travelling can change your perspective in life. From my personal point-of-view the travels I did this year has been life-changing. I met new people and discovered a side of me I never thought exist. 5. Invest for your future

Another smart use of your 13^th month pay is through investing. You can open a mutual fund, direct stock, UITF or any other savings account of your choice and become an investor. Below are recommended investment vehicle you can open with your 13^th month pay:

6. Save on your Emergency Fund

An emergency fund acts as money cushion to help in you in case of unwanted/unplanned situation. Whether it be sickness, death in the family, loss of job or other unforeseen events you have an extra money to use. 7. Pay-Off Your Debt

The essence of Christmas is expressing gratitude to the people around you so what a better way to spend you 13^th month pay than buying some presents to them. I remember the Christmas in 2013 when I bought a sofa for our living room. I felt so much joy to be able to provide one for my family. Until today we are still using the sofa. My eldest sister on the other hand bought a 21-inch flat screen TV for us which made everyone in the household happy. I suggest going to Lazada since they have a lot of gadgets and items for sale this season. You’ll definitely find one for each of your family member.

Personally I plan to divide my 13^th month into three major expenses: emergency fund, new investment (direct stock) and rewarding myself. I have been super blessed with event hosting gig for the month of December and I can’t thank God enough for the talent He gave me. So far I can definitely conclude that this year is the best year ever in terms of my financial life. Now I can’t wait for 2017 because I’ll surely double (and even triple) my hard work.

It's time to do another SavingsPinay Monthly Quick Recap. Just like the past two months I'll be including an Extra Income Report devoted solely on the side hustles I do. I hope doing this will inspire you to make money on the side too.

November flew by too quickly and I feel embarrassed for publishing only two posts. I was experiencing some kind of blogger's block for the past month and couldn't find the motivation to write or to publish any post. Hopefully the last month of 2016 will be a productive one to yours truly. Anyway let's begin doing a recap shall we?!

We reached 200,000++ Pageviews

I finally achieved my 2016 Blog Goal of reaching 200,000 pageviews on this blog. Thank you for making it possible. Thank you for your love and support as SavingsPinay readers. I want to however announce that this will be the last time that I'll incorporate an update of SavingsPinay pageviews on the Monthly Recaps. Starting January 2017 I'll be transferring this blog to a new home which means a new (and better) blog for you too! Though I have to go back to start with the pageviews count I believe this is the best decision and investment I'll be making to SavingsPinay. I have a lot of hopes for this blog and next year is the best time to get started. Hope you can stay tune for that!

Closing My BPI Save-Up Automatic + Insurance Account

One of the toughest financial decision I made this year is closing my BPI Save-Up Automatic + Insurance Account. I have opened that one in 2014 and it did kick start my emergency fund. But because of personal reasons like me growing up and changing my plans I decided to close the account. You can read the full post here which will also give you an idea on how closing a BPI Save-Up Automatic + Insurance is done. Again just like what I mentioned in the blog post the BPI Save-Up Automatic + Insurance is one of the best savings account available for Filipinos and the fact that it has an insurance is amazing. It's just that maintaining one is hard given my current situation.

6 Top Reasons Why Pinoys Find It Difficult to Save Money from John

Two weeks ago I received an excellent article from John Sulit that I know most of SavingsPinay readers will enjoy. Now that we are in the last month of the current year it is recommended to take time and reflect on our spending habits once and for all. This article sent by John from iMoney Philippines will help up understand why most, if not all, Pinoys find it difficult to save money. A lot of Filipinos think that saving is difficult because it requires huge budget cuts. When you say savings, you automatically think of economizing, and not being able to fully enjoy your hard-earned money. However, it’s just a matter of having nerves of steel to save money automatically, and then reaping the rewards in the future. Admittedly, it’s not as easy as it sounds. Especially when you have all these things to factor in.

1. No money to save

As reported by the Philippine Statistics Authority last year, there are approximately 12 million Filipinos living below the poverty line. When you have no money to spend, naturally, you have no money to save. A large percentage of Filipinos are unemployed or living in poverty. Those who are employed and earning money are not earning enough to even have money left to save.

2. Delaying saving

How many of you tell yourselves to start saving money, but then that day comes and you just shrug it off and postpone it to the next payday? You do this every time there’s an emergency that you need to pay for, or there’s a new product that you absolutely must have. Before you know it, a whole year has already passed by and still zero savings!

3. Bad spending habits

When you have money, you usually spend it extravagantly on yourself and your family. After all, that’s the reward of all your hard work. In just a matter of days, all the money that you have left just goes to pay your bills, with no extra to go to your savings account.

You use whatever cash you have left to pay off existing loans and your growing credit card debt. And then when that’s settled, you feel comfortable enough to start using your EastWest credit card again. You even apply for a new personal loan so that you can purchase those things you were not able to purchase before because you were paying off your debts.

4. The need to help family and friends

The Filipino is all about the family. You work hard to provide a good home for your loved ones, send your kids to good schools, and make sure they have a pretty comfortable existence.

But this amount of love and care also extends to your parents, siblings, cousins, nephews, and nieces, and even your goddaughters and godsons. When a family member is struggling financially, you will still take them in your care, even if you can no longer afford it. Because that’s just how Filipinos are; family always comes first.

5. Limited knowledge

When it comes to savings and investments, a lot of Filipinos lack education. Not everyone understands the different methods of money management, or ways you can invest your money, or how the banking sector works. Most Filipinos who don’t speak or understand English also have a hard time understanding bank terms and conditions and other complicated banking services and concepts.

Consequently, you end up just receiving your paychecks without exploring how else you can make your money grow. Oftentimes, you are intimidated by or scared of investments because of your impression that it’s only for wealthy people, or for people who are experienced in finance and money management. You get intimidated by figures too complex to learn and financial jargon too confusing to remember.

6. Having no financial plan

When there’s no financial plan in place, there is no urgency to save money. You will not be forced to take a portion of your income to build an emergency fund because you don’t have an emergency fund to begin with. Most likely, the only financial plan that you have is to receive your salary every payday, settle your bills, and pay off some of your debts.

Stop scratching your head trying to figure out how your bill accumulated so much, instead start doing something about it with these strategies on how to pay off your credit card debt and get out of that financial slump as soon as you can.

Why I Closed my BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings + Insurance Account and How To Do It

Two years ago I opened my BPI Direct Save-Up plus Insurance account to kick-start my emergency fund. I have featured it in a first impression review as soon as I received my Info Card in February 2014 and a blog update in October 2014. Just like the others I got really excited with the word "insurance" alongside this particular savings account from BPI. I believe everyone would love to save and to get insured at the same time. But last November 4 I decided to deactivate or cancel my BPI Save-Up plus Insurance account.

Quick Review

The BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings + Insurance is a product of BPI. With this account you can:

Save without any initial deposit.
Easy enrollment via BPI Express Online. No need to go to nearest BPI branch and present your IDs.
Enable automatic deposit to your Save-Up account. Decide how much you want to save per payday or every month and it will be transferred from your savings account to your Save-Up account automatically.
Secure your savings without the ability to withdraw on your account. Instead of a Debit or ATM you will be given an Info Card which serves as your proof identification in case you'll be needing the insurance.
Earn interest rate of .500% per annum.
Monitor your BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings + Insurance online at www.bpiexpressonline.com. You will see your account real-time together with the rest of you BPI accounts.
Get FREE Life Insurance. As I mentioned in my BPI-Direct Save-Up + Insurance First Impression Review this is the main reason why I enrolled for the account. The insurance makes your savings more than just the usual savings account. The amount of your coverage is equal to as much as 10x your account balance.

Basic Life : 5X the account’s average Month-to-Date Average Daily Balance (MTD-ADB) of the past three calendar months with a maximum amount of P2,000,000 regardless of the number of accounts opened by the insured individual.

Meaning if your account balance is 100,000 for the past three calendar months you will get 500,000 basic life insurance.

Accidental Death: Additional 5X the account’s average Month-to-Date Average Daily Balance (MTD-ADB) of the past three calendar months up to P2,000,000 regardless of the number of accounts opened by the insured individual.

Meaning if your basic life insurance costs 500,000pesos then it will gain additional 5x the accounts MTD-ADB making you have almost 1million worth of insurance for accidental death.

Accidental Dismemberment: 5X the account’s average Month-to-Date Average Daily Balance (MTD-ADB) of the past three calendar months with a maximum amount of P2,000,000 independent of the number of accounts opened by the insured individual.

Meaning if your account balance is 100,000 for the past three calendar months you will get 500,000 basic life insurance.

Now with the above benefits and information you may wonder why I chose to close my BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings + Insurance account. Let me tell you that it wasn't an easy decision to be honest. I consider this account as one of the best ever because your savings comes with an insurance already. No other bank can give such advantage. But with sudden change in my situation, priorities and goals I decided it is time to bid goodbye to the account.

Why I Closed my BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings

Reason #1. Switch of payroll account

When I opened my BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings + Insurance account I was still working as a SEO Content Writer (January 2014). My ex-company use BPI for payroll account so opening the account is very easy as well as managing how much and how frequent I want to save. Now in my current job (got hired February 2014) we use Metrobank for payroll account so if I need to deposit monthly to my BPI in order to fund my BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings + Insurance account. It was too much of a hassle for me to be honest.

Reason #2. Lack of fund to sustain the account

Now because I switched bank account I have no means to sustain my BPI Save-Up account. Also the process it takes to fund the account is very stressful. First I need to withdraw from Metrobank then deposit to my BPI account. And let me tell you how the "automation" became a negative on my situation. I chose to be deducted 500pesos every 6th and 21st of the month automatically. This will not change unless you informed BPI. Now my current payroll is every 15th and 30th which is very different from my previous company. The situation became really chaotic because I don't know how to maintain my Save-Up account anymore. Reason #3. Too much bank accounts

Another reason why I decided to cancel my account is to once and for all get my finances in order. Too much bank accounts is not helping me at all. I have two Metrobank Savings Account, one BPI Savings Account and the Save-Up Automatic + Insurance Account. I realized that I'm fine with just the Metrobank and the BPI Express savings.

Metrobank Debit #1 is my payroll account. I also use this to pay for my FAMI-SALEF account.

Metrobank Debit #2 is my new emergency fund account. I automatically transfer a portion of my income monthly to this account from my payroll. The amount I have in this account even exceeded what I have in my BPI Save-Up Automatic + Insurance.

BPI Savings Account is my dedicated bank account for extra income. Any money from event hosting or freelance writing I do is deposited to this account. You can read more information about this in my recent Monthly Quick Recap + Extra Income Report.

I thing these three bank accounts work hand-in-hand to give me a much secured financial situation. Now I don't have to be guilty that I am not saving enough.

Reason #4. Investing my money is my current priority

Now that I'm done paying first year of my St. Peter Life Plan I am already entitled to a term life insurance as well as accidental death and dismemberment benefit from the company. READ HERE to know more. With this plus my Metrobank Debit #2 for new Emergency Fund and BPI Savings Account for Extra Income I am more than willing to invest on direct stock market next. I am still young and able so growing my money through proper investing is what I am prepared to do.

I was surprised on how fast and easy closing a BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings + Insurance can be. It took me less than five minutes of explanation to a phone banker. Below is the step-by-step process I took plus additional information you need to know.

Call the BPI Hotline 89-100. After the voice message press "0" so you'll be directed to a phone banker.

Note: I called around 5pm on a Friday and I still got to talk to someone on the phone. You can call anytime, any day to get your account closed.

The phone banker will ask your personal information as well as your BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings + Insurance account number. He/She will also ask you how much your current money on the account is for further verification.

Note: You don't need your Info Card to close your account. You can easily see your BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings + Insurance account number when you access your BPI Express Online account.

Now tell the phone banker that you wish to close your BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings + Insurance account. He/She will then explain to you how the process goes.
- It will take five working days for your Save-Up account to be closed. In my experience I called on a Friday and my account is already closed the following Monday. Your Save-Up account will disappear in your BPI Express Online dashboard.
- Before they cancel your account you need to transfer whatever amount you have in your BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings + Insurance to your regular BPI Savings Account. This means you have to zero out your Save-Up account. Note: Whatever money you have in your BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings + Insurance will be automatically transferred to the BPI Savings Account you used in opening your Save-Up account upon cancellation.

Things That I Learned

On my last update I mentioned how I learned the importance of automatic saving. I still do the automation on my new emergency fund. This is the main learning and habit that opening BPI Direct Save-Up brought in my financial life. I realized that automation is the real king.

Saving for an emergency fund does not rely on the bank account you use. Your commitment is the one that plays a big factor for you to build an emergency fund successfully.

The word "insurance" can be very enticing but in case the account doesn't work for you don't be afraid to close it and move on. The most important thing is that you have financial peace in your life.

Additional Information

Every month your BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings + Insurance is not within the minimum balance you will be deducted an amount of 200pesos. Minimum maintaining balance is 1,000pesos.
You can still apply for a BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings + Insurance even if you closed your first account. I'm not closing my doors to the account at all. Maybe in the future I will open a new one.
You can also do the same step-by-step process in case you wish to change only the amount of automatic savings you input or the frequency of automation. For example upon opening the account you decided to automatically transfer 1,000pesos every 25th of the month. Now you want to you want to increase or to decrease the amount of money you save or the date when your savings is automatically deducted. All you have to do is call the BPI Hotline and talk to the phone banker.
You don't have to go to BPI branch for closing your account and no need to prepare any other document.

Final Words from SavingsPinay

My decision to close my BPI Direct Save-Up may come as a surprise to some of you. I do still consider opening the BPI Direct Save-Up plus Insurance as one of my big financial decision and I'm glad I did it. The account may work wonder for some but at the moment I don't see any reason to continue it. Assess your financial situation right now and if something is not working don't be afraid to resolve it. Last October 15 I got invited to attend the “Female Network Let’s Talk about Financial Freedom” event. It was an afternoon filled with wisdom in the area of personal finance. One particular question that left me hanging was raised by Ms. Patty Aguirre of Integra Financials, one of our speakers during the forum. She asked this question to us, “How Do You Picture Your Retirement Age?”

Retirement is a topic I have never really gotten too deep here in SavingsPinay. I feel like I am not the right person to discuss it especially since I’m only 22. But when Ms. Patty raised that question it deeply resonated in me. I think there’s no better time to plan for your retirement than now.

Three Truths, One Life

There are three things we can never avoid in our Earthly life. It is the risk of getting sick, the risk of living too long and the risk of dying young. These three essential truths is the reason why you should think about your financial future more. Are you financially prepared if you or someone from your family got seriously ill? Who would take care of you when you get old? Does your family (or your future family) ready in case you will die today. The whole thing sounds crazy and morbid, I know, but it is part of human life.

Let’s go back to Ms. Patty’s question, how do you picture your retirement age? For me retirement isn’t just about “not working” anymore. Retirement mirrors my declaration to be a financially independent Pinay. I want to live life financially free where I am able to live sufficiently without worrying about tomorrow. It is something I really want, I am willing to continuously work for and build my own system to succeed.

But the sad thing is only a handful of Filipinos think (and plan) about their retirement. Why?

1. Thinking “Nariyan naman ang mga anak/kamag-anak ko”

It is a very common mindset among Filipino parents to pass on the obligation to their respective children as a form of payment for their sacrifice. I believe that retirement is each and every one’s duty. Remember that your child is neither your retirement plan nor your investment. If ever they want to give back to you through monetary blessing it should be because of love and not out of desperation. Your child will have a family of his/her own and will have to plan too for his/her own retirement.

2. Thinking “May SSS/GSIS naman ako”

Do you know how little you’ll get as an SSS Pension holder? I was surprised when I learned that my dad will only get 4,000pesos a month as partial disability allowance when he had contributed almost half of his life in SSS. The truth is SSS contribution earns at very low interest rate which makes your benefits limited too. If you believe that your SSS/GSIS is enough to supply your retirement then you are bound for a big financial loop hole. You may live with 10,000 monthly today but 10 years from now that same amount won’t be enough anymore. You can't entrust your retirement fund to government-issued policies like SSS, GSIS (for government workers), PhilHealth and PAG-Ibig. You won't survive with the inflation rate and the cost of living. Thus, the monthly pension you will get from the retirement program may not be enough to support your needs and your family’s needs.

3. Thinking “Bata pa naman ako, tsaka na lang”

Postponing your retirement fund time and time again is a bad attitude. It is way better to save for your future now that you are young and able rather than spend your retirement age poor. If you are 40 today and want to retire at 60, you will only have 20 years to save and invest. This means setting aside 40-45% of your income to accumulate enough retirement fund. I don’t know about you but saving 45% of income at age 40 when you already have a family of your own isn’t that feasible at all.

The Correct Retirement Mindset

Retirement success varies from person to person. Some want to retire young, others want at the usual 60 while most have to postpone their retirement because of lack of fund. Retirement is a huge life changer both financially and emotionally. It doesn’t end when you hit the age you want or when you filled out all the necessary forms to retire. It’s not just about stopping your current work or career but living the rest of your life in purpose and stability.

The right retirement mindset is simply visualizing it. Picture how your retirement is going to be. Talk about it with your spouse or loved one or even yourself. Set your mind and heart to the idea of retirement. Once you have successfully visualized it you’ll be able to take down notes on actionable items to make it happen. A successful retirement entails a plan to spend not just your money but also your time.

Smart Moves for a Better Retirement Picture

Our financial habits today can affect how we will retire tomorrow. So if you have pictured almost an impossible retirement life then you need to work hard today to make it possible. Below are smart retirement moves you can do today to retire well in the future.

1. Determine the age you want to retire.

Again it’s all about the vision. Ask yourself when you plan to retire. This will enable you to calculate the lifestyle you’ll live during your golden years and how much money you need to save today.

2. Fund your retirement today.

From my post the Different Saving Fund You Should Own, I’ve mentioned Retirement as part of what you should include in your financial planning. You will never be young forever so you better start thinking about your retirement too. A lot may ask what age a retirement fund should be started and the definite answer would be ASAP. Saving for your retirement now will enable you to enjoy your harvest season sooner. The earlier you start the more chances that your money will grow. Start by saving money on a monthly, quarterly or yearly basis. Commit to a certain amount you can fund. Then add whenever you are financially equipped. If you want to retire happy you need to start saving accordingly.

3. Maximize your money by investing.

Work hard, save, invest and repeat --- this my friends is the early retirement strategy. Once your paycheck comes, pay yourself first and foremost. Saving your income will get you started right away. Next you want to maximize your savings by investing. Investing is the sure way you make your money work for you and not the other way around.

To date, there are a number of investment vehicles you can choose from. From direct investing to stocks to indirect investments like mutual fund, Variable Universal Life (VUL) or Unit Linked Products (ULP). Saving alone will not get you to where you want to be 10-20 years from now. Don’t be afraid to invest for it’s the best way you can do to maximize your money’s growth potential.

Repeat the first two steps until you achieved your desired portfolio or you have more than enough money to outlast you.

4. Diversify your assets

Diversify your investments. Diversification is a financial technique that reduce the risk factor of investing by allocating your investments to different financial vehicles, industries, institutions or other varied categories. In other words, don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

5. Consult expert advice

Ask questions and seek help if you must. Retirement is a big deal and consulting a financial advisor to examine your retirement goals can be very beneficial on your side. They can help you in the following areas:

Spending – Financial advisor will help you understand your current situation and work out on your current income and expenses. They will help you fix your budget and make it work for you.

To Borrow or Not? – Most of my readers will private message me when it comes to debt and honestly I feel like I’m not that equipped to answer your question. Experienced financial advisors are the way to go for a much preferred debt-payment method. They can help you make the toughest decisions that could set you free from debt.

Investing – Financial advisors will work out your investment profile. They will assess what type of investor you are and the type of investment that’s perfect for your need. Reading blogs and financial books are great tools of knowledge but there’s something about personal appearance and communication that makes you want to learn more.

Get Insured– Insurance are critical to build a strong financial foundation. A good advisor will highly recommend getting your assets insured and protected. It all boils down to the three truths mentioned earlier so you need proper protection to solidify your financial plan. Imagine this scenario: If you get hospitalized or get “taken out of picture”, your retirement fund will be used entirely. But what will happen next? How will your family survive or ensure that your children’s education will continue? Insurances policies like healthcare, life, accident and disability are investments too that you need to consider.

Planning – The role of a financial advisor is to help you generate wealth necessary for your successful retirement. They will offer help as you plan your goals in life. If you have questions from how to start and where to start, their passion can direct you.

Choose your financial advisor wisely! Ask questions and see if the answers and advice that they give really satisfies you. Choose someone who can understand how you picture your retirement will be and can suggest the possible next set of actions to get you to where you want to be.

Thank you for helping me reach my goal of 190,000 pageviews this month! To be honest every morning one of the first thing I do when I go on my computer is check my stats. It makes me happy to see our numbers growing. I think it is safe to say that my goal to hit 200,000 pageviews by the end of 2016 is possible. For November my target is 210,000 pageviews.

I earned 8,000pesos in October for Event Hosting alone.

I didn't achieve my goal of 12,000pesos extra income as all-around event host in the Philippines. I hosted two weddings one at Ninoy Aquino Park and Wild Life last October 8 and at CVJ Marikina on October 20. I did however successfully managed to finalize my marketing spiel for tie-ups and started sending email to potential suppliers. I even received an inquiry about my rate. Yay! I earned $100 USD in October for Freelance Writing

Now this gig came as a surprise and I couldn't be anymore thankful. Someone asked me for a ghost writing service of 1,500 words and viola I got $100 USD on my bank account the following week. This is the biggest I earned this year doing freelance content writing and the article I did took me only 2 hours to create.

November Plans on the Blog and Side Hustles

Maximize Free Time. I have a lot of free time to be honest and if only I maximize them to productive work I know I'll get a lot of stuff done. My plan for November is to go on a productive sprint and just do everything I can to finish my pending projects in personal, in blog and in my side jobs.
Stick to Blog Schedule with Quality Post. I haven't been blogging that frequent both in this blog and my other blog, IzzaGlinoFull. With the current long weekend my plan is to create as many content as possible so all I have to do is edit and schedule for the coming work days. I really want to be on schedule for November and publish more than 12 posts.

13 Things I Do To Improve My Finances

When I started this blog my goal was to only share my personal financial journey. I never thought that my posts would inspire others to create their own journey to financial freedom as well. Thank you for considering SavingsPinay is a resource blog for tips and information on budget, savings, investment, entrepreneurship, career and productivity and many more.

I know how tough managing your money can be. Just like you, I have struggled to balance my budget and keep everything in order. But what I come to realize is that the little things and changes we do today matter a lot. Every financial decision you make can impact how your life will be in 10-20 years. And if you start strengthening your financial life and really building a strong foundation then your future self will surely thank you. Here are ways I have improved my finances and how slowly but surely I am getting on track of my ultimate goal to be a financially independent Pinay.

1. I set goals

I have always been a big fan of goal-setting ever since I was in school. I try to list the things that I want to accomplish and the next actions that can make them happen. You can refer to my 2016 Personal and Financial Goals for a list of what I've set myself up for this year. I still haven't updated it though since I am waiting for my Year-End review post.

Anyway every end of the month I set my personal and financial goals in my bullet journal. Then I try to create a weekly goal based on my monthly goal. My monthly goal is all about numbers I want to achieve like "Earn 20,000pesos through event hosting" or "Earn $100 dollars on freelance content writing". For weekly goals most of the time they aren't number-based but really personal financial habits I want to succeed like "I will track my expenses everyday this week" or "I will read a financial book" etc.

Having goals enable me to be motivated all year, all month and all week long. I enjoy hitting my personal and financial goals especially those that involve numbers. READ: SavingsPinay September Quick Recap and Extra Income Report

2. I budget

The 50-20-30 Rule of Budgeting have helped me a lot to have a clear view on how I must use my hard earned money. Every pay day I use the template I created and really distribute my money wisely. This helped me to allot 20% of my money on savings and investments, 50% for my personal needs and essentials and 30% for extra expenses. 3. I track my expenses

One of the best personal finance lesson I learned thanks to the Internet is the importance of tracking your spending. A budget won't work that well if you miss this crucial step. Before I use a DIY Spending Tracker and then moved on a new spending tracker notebook before finally settling on my bullet journal for this activity. What I do is record where my money goes everyday and review whether I stayed within my daily budget or not. This also allowed me to understand my behavior as a consumer and my overall attitude when it comes to spending my money.

4. I learn a lot about personal finance

I have shared a collection of my personal finance and investment books before and I am really happy that I have found deep joy in learning more about financial literacy. It's nice to learn new things about money every single day.

The thing is the more you know, the better when it comes to finances. Whenever you have time try to search for inspirations online on how others manage their money. 5. I started saving for an emergency fund

Though my 52-week money challenge attempt this year is a big failure I am still happy that I got my baby emergency fund done (READ: Pinoys Guide on Dave Ramsey's Money Makeover). Currently I am adding as much money as possible to increase my baby emergency fund to a real one --- 3 months worth of my monthly expenses.

For me it's better to save for an emergency fund now that I still have no financial responsibility and no debt to think about. Once I'm done saving up for my real emergency fund I can now focus on saving on other funds and of course my investments.

6. I invest for my retirement

My FAMI-Save and Learn Equity Fund is something I reserve as my retirement fund. I invest monthly on it hoping that in 10-15 years time it could give me a good start up money for a business or something I can do once I decide to retire. I have envisioned an early retirement for me because I really don't see myself working all my life.

7. I pay for a life plan

I know a life plan sounds a like a crazy idea for a 22-year old like me but it proved to be the best decision ever. It was my parents who encouraged me to get one when I learned that they are already done paying for their own life plan. Read the Three Reasons Why I am Convinced to Invest in a Life Plan too. To date I'm done with my first year of payment and the benefit are now effective. Four more years before I finish the payment contract and then I just have to wait for 16 years for the money-back guarantee. 8. I improve my income

Aside from my full-time job I do side hustles that helped me achieved my financial goals quickly. I have my event hosting career which I shared the full details of my journey last week [read here]. I also started freelancing in my spare time through content writing. Another way I earn is through my blogs and YouTube. Side jobs proved to be the best way to improve my finances and prepare for my future.

On days when I don't have anything to do I work on finding new income streams. I have always been clear that I dream of a day when I can work freelance full-time and still satisfy my lifestyle.

9. I try to schedule my shopping and dining out

I eliminate my temptation to spend by having a schedule when to shop and to spend money to dine out. For example I get my manicure and pedicure every first Sunday and 3rd Sunday of the week. I also do my shopping spree a day after the payday. Then I set a pamper day where I watch movie and really go on a fancy dinner only once a month. Setting a schedule help me avoid overspending and give me the right reason to spend on things. It means I only go shopping when I really have to.

10. I de-clutter most of my stuff

From clothing to makeup to skincare items I recently had a big de-cluttering and realized how much money I waste buying things I never even used. Just last week I have thrown away a pile of clothing I don't use anymore as well as a big sako-bag of expired makeup and skincare items. It made me realized a lot of things that made me improved my finances:

Invest on staple pieces when it comes to clothing and shoes.
Invest of makeup that you actually need.
Only buy a new skincare item if and then:
Keep everything as minimal as possible.
Exert effort to buy only quality products and just take good care of things.

11. I still live in my parents house

Though I give monthly monetary gift to my parents and pay for half of the bills and expenses, choosing to stay at our house now that I'm still single and still in my early 20's is something that proved to be a good financial decision. Of course I dream of one day settling down on my own but for now being at home save me a lot of money on food. Included in my long-term goal is to buy my own house and lot and move my parents and my youngest sister on my care until I get married and have my own family.

12. I invest in myself

For me the most important thing I have done to improve my finances is to really invest on myself. I continuously improve my hosting skills which then give me the right to receive a higher pay. I also use my experience to widen my reach from being host to makeup and hair stylist to wedding coordinator etc. Blogging on the other hand helped me gain exposure to brands that are willing to work with me for a reasonable price. It also opened opportunity for me to earn more than what my current day job offer. And because of the many things I do I find it easier to negotiate for a higher salary. I tried to look for a job one day and I was surprised of how much employers are willing to pay me because I have developed my knowledge and seasoned it with proper experience. 13. I became in a relationship with my finances

Lastly I made financial independence a quest. I became in a relationship with my finances. I find time to reflect on what works and what's not working. I resolve the issues before it becomes worse. I make it my to do list to track my spending and fix my budget. It's a commitment you have to you and your future self.

Two years ago I was a one-day millionaire who didn't know what she wants to do in her life. Fast forward to today I was able to declare my goal to be one-day financially independent. I don't have much but still I have my savings, my investments and my life plan secured. Again it is what you do today that matters. If I doubted investing back when I'm just 19 years old I'll never learn how stock market works. I haven't chose to use my talent as an event host for all occasion I am still living like an average person today --- doing one job Mondays-Fridays and waiting for the weekend to arrive.

Last week I shared to you my goal of becoming a financially independent Pinay. How I want to live a life where I am entitled to more than I can actually afford. That I want to live a life where I can pursue a career of my choice and still get a grip on my finances. And that I want to live a life where I can easily give and share my blessings to others without worrying what will happen next to my funds.

My post opened a number of questions from curious readers whether financial freedom is really possible. Today I'd like to give you a clear road map on how early financial independence can be a doable goal and why you owe it to yourself to be one day financially free.

The Journey to Financial Independence

Financial Independence is defined as a state of having sufficient personal wealth to live, without having to work actively for basic necessities. It means you accumulate greater passive income that can cover your expenses even without you working for it. Personal financial independence is a life long process. And it's something you can only achieve if you start now.

If you read my About Page you'll know that my magic number in terms of retirement and achieving total financial independence has been 30 years old. I know it sounds too ambitious and I am still currently far from that state to be honest. But I am working on it every day. And nothings gonna stop me from my quest to financial freedom. Even if I don't hit my target retired at 30 know that everything I do today will help me be still in a way better financial life by that age rather than doing nothing at all.

Is Financial Independence possible?

I've read countless of blogs and articles of people who have achieved financial freedom in life. They were able to create the life they want without stopping. How? Below are the main factors that play a lot of role to make the impossible possible and one day be financially free.

You Need to Really Want It

Your desire to be financially free is important to help you go from zero to hero in less time. You can only do something you really want, right? Spend a day to really sort things out in your financial life and set your heart, mind and soul to the idea of becoming financially independent.

Create a personal definition of "financial independence" for you.
Find out your current financial status through calculating your net worth.
List your goals that will help you achieve total financial independence.

Debt will be a big hindrance for you to achieve financial independence. As much as possible try to avoid debt or pay it off as early as possible. When paying off debt it's better to do the snowball method or focusing on those that have higher interest rate then moving on the low-interest rate debt. Below is a before, during and after debt tip you can use:

Before making a debt

Assess whether it’s a need or a want.
Find possible alternative that can cost you less.
Find possible creditor/loan solution have no/less interest rate.
Create an agreement (possibly written) on the payment method as well asthe deadline.

During the debt

Avoid making additional debt.
Create a good creditor-debtor relationship.
Have an open communication with your creditor.
Pay on time the whole amount with interest(if any).
If you can’t pay the debt on time, let the creditor know as soon as possible. Let him/her know the honest reason why and ask for an allowance.
If it’s a credit card delay then talk to your bank and ask for possible solution that you can pay. I know one who wrote a letter to the leading bank and was given a payment method that is so much easier to do thought takes longer time. Still he is responsible enough to pay.

After the debt

Appreciate your creditor by thanking him/her for the financial help.
Don’t make another debt just when your current debt ended.
Still have an open communication to your creditor.

Start saving money

The earlier you save money the better it would be for your finances. Make sure that you automatically save a portion of your income as cash reserve for future or emergency use. How do you save? Start small. Do not over commit on the percentage of your income that goes to saving. If you still can't do the 50% of your salary on savings then don't. It is way better to start with 10% to 20% of your income then go higher as your source increases. What matters most is you save consistently.

You need to establish the system that will get you there. From what budget will enable you to so to what investment will give you the right number to retire at peace.

Recognize the need to implement change in your habits and routines so you can start working on your financial freedom system. I think what I notice the most is that people who want to retire young and achieve financial independence are reading and learning a lot but do not act.

You have to build you own system to success. No self-help books can build the road for you. If you don't act on it then everything will be put to waste. So try to start and learn how... NOW.

I got asked a lot on how I started hosting in the Philippines. Becoming an event emcee is an example of side hustle I do since 2011. It became my number 1 source of extra income and I can never be more thankful to God for giving me the hosting skills necessary to succeed in the event planning and management field.

He heard my prayer and provided me not just one, two, three but multiple events that year. I knew at that time that hosting is for me. I was chosen to host The Youth Peace Festival held in SM Mall of Asia and Alex the Lion from Madagascar Meet and Greet at SM Novaliches Event Center. Hosting is open for all gender and age. You don't even need a resume to get started. All you need are the following skills and characteristics:

Voice Projection - Your delivery of lines matter a lot in hosting a good occasion. You also need to speak loudly and clearly so every person in the venue will understand what's happening. A good host doesn't yell but rather know how to bring dynamics to his/her voice that could make enhance the performance.
High Energy - Your energy as a host can definitely influence the crowd. As the master of ceremonies you have to be on top of your game and really deliver good showmanship to the crowd. You have to wow them with your magnetic personality and confidence as you hold the microphone and start the program.
Wit and Humor - One characteristic that will definitely define you as a good emcee for all occasion is your ability to offer your wit and humor to the audience. Wit enables you to be very quick and sharp on a given situation. Humor on the other hand is making funny phrases or gestures that will make everyone happy too.
Clarity - You need to be very clear in your pronunciation and diction. Avoid talking too quickly and know when to pause to make every word you say more understandable.
Preparedness - You also ought to be knowledgeable about the event and have a program that can highlight your client's needs and wants. Once you start talking into the microphone, there's no stopping already. You will be the very point of person through out the event. You are hired to make the event run smoothly and you can only do that with proper preparation beforehand.

3 Steps to Launch Your Event Hosting Profession in the Philippines

Step 1. Advertise Your Hosting Skills to Friends and Relatives.

You can slowly build your portfolio as an emcee for all occasion by announcing to your friends and relative about your service. A simple post on your Facebook account and word of mouth can open a lot of opportunities for you. Try to say "yes" to every event that comes along your way as a beginner so you'll have more testimonials on your portfolio and added learning experience as well.

Step 2. Make Your Own Portfolio Online.

Once you get around 3-5 hosting you can now build your online portfolio. You can do a Facebook Page or Instagram account and start selling your talent online and reaching out more people. Post a video of you hosting and include your contact details on the caption. This will surely entice people to book you for their event.

Step 3. Familiarize Yourself with Each Event.

Your skills as a host will improve with more experience. I have been hosting for almost years now and I can definitely say that I have massively improved. I can be as natural as possible when hosting a wedding even without a prepared program. I also notice that I can handle the situation easier through time and I definitely developed enough self-confidence thanks to my years of emceeing.

How Much Can You Earn as a Event Host for Hire?

Your talent fee as emcee depends on three things:

The Type of Event. Events like birthday parties, wedding receptions lasts for 2-3 hours and call for a simpler hosting style. Corporate events on the other hand can be shorter or longer and need formality on your side as host.
The Location. Since hosting is service-type you can also ask for a higher payment on transportation for further location. There is so called Metro Manila fee and Provincial fee in hosting too.
The Host's Profile. Seasoned hosts will surely have higher talent fee than beginners. I've been hosting for five years and counting and can pass as a seasoned host but to be honest I still consider myself as a beginner. I love learning from other hosts as well.

Final Notes from SavingsPinay

Hosting events is one the best way I earned extra income in the Philippines. No capital or investment needed and you can easily start earning from scratch. As long as you know you have the talent then go for it. If I doubted my talent and didn't create an advertisement before then I am probably not hosting today and earning 8,000 to 12,000 extra monthly. This is even low income report compared to other friends and colleagues who charge the 8,000pesos per event!!! Again if you have the talent develop it and earn from it!

COL Financial advocates financial literacy among Filipinos

The leading online stockbroker in the Philippines, COL Financial, in partnership with SM Investment Corporation, successfully conducted their nationwide financial literacy summit, SMart Investing – COL’s 2016 Wealth Building Summit for the Filipino Investor. The summit aims to educate Filipinos so they can understand how investing and the stock market works. Over thousands of participants from Davao, Cagayan De Oro, Cebu, and Manila were able to participate in and learn from the educational and informative talks by some of the financial industry leaders in the country.

COL Financial President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dino Bate opened the summit with his inspiring welcoming remarks to all the participants, which was followed by the presentation of COL Wealth Building Specialist, Jed Velarde, who highlighted smart and effective ways to invest in the stock market.

On his keynote presentation, COL Financial Chairman and Founder Edward Lee shared the many different investment styles and their unique attributes, saying that, "to be a successful active trader in this market one must understand the rules and manage his risk properly to avoid any major set backs."

Meanwhile, COL Fund Expert Marvin Fausto pointed out that the most important thing to remember in investing through mutual funds is to apply the principle of S.M.A.R.T.: Stay Invested, Manage Risk, Asset Allocation, Regular Investing, and Target Reviews.

The summit also convened representatives from the top fund houses in the Philippines for an informative panel discussion: Phillip Hagedorn, Managing Director for Equities of ATR Asset Management; Augusto Cosio, President of First Metro Asset Management; Carol Tinio, Vice President and Head of Partnership of Philam Asset Management; Wilson Sy, President of

PhilEquity Management; Valerie Pama, Director and President of Sun Life Management; and Ruben Espiritu, President and Director of BPI Investment Management Inc.

The afternoon session was spearheaded by COL Head of Research April Lee Tan and COL Chief Technical Analyst Juan Barredo, who discussed COL Financial’s mid-year market briefing. The summit concluded with a panel discussion with investment experts and representatives from SM Investments, BDO, and SM Prime, which was followed by a Q & A session.

Getting out of debt is one of the best financial move you can do in your life. It promotes financial peace and security, more money to spend without guilt and improves your ability to save and invest. One thing I will be forever thankful for to my parents is how they never ever let us go in debt. We never experienced going to the neighbor asking for money or things or food. They manage to resolve all financial issues before we even knew they existed.

But I know not everyone is in the same situation as I am. I don't even have idea until when will I stay debt-free. And so debt is an important matter for me too. Today I decided to post a strategy that will let you pay debt even on low income. I hope this post will help you manage debt before 2016 ends.

Here's a Strategy to Pay Debt Even With Low Salary

Paying debt on a low income can be a real challenge. You need enough resources to sustain both your needs and your bills. As much as you want to save and pay your creditors, you feel like there isn't enough money coming that will enable you. Thus, people often end up with more debt instead.

The very first thing you need to do is to treat debt-payment as a goal.

If you see it as a task or obligation you will easily feel discouraged to pay. When you allow your debts as a goal you want to accomplish at a give time (deadline) you'll certainly arrive with a debt-payment plan in no time.

Evaluate all your good debts and bad debts and write them all down. Good Debts are those with low-interest and debt you accumulate reasonably. Examples are your house mortgage, car loan and debt due to emergency situation. Bad Debts come with high interest rates that can be fatal to your budget. Once you have written all your "utang" and the amount of each you can now create your debt-payment goal.

Simply feel in the blanks:

My goal is to pay an amount of _________________ to ____________ by _________ .

Example: My goal is to pay an amount of 30,000pesos to my Personal Loan with Kumpare Jose by end of 2016.

Other variations are as follows:

My goal is to pay __________ every __________ to ______________.

Example: My goal is to pay 2,500pesos every month to my debt-payment fund.

My goal is to finish paying my ____________ before ________________.

Example: My goal is to pay my student loan before 2017 ends.

Once you make your debt a goal rather than a task you'll see it as a big project with small and manageable next actions. I will assure you that this mind set is way better and will help you pay even on a low income.

Next is to know your Debt-to-Income Ratio

Not everyone knows this method in assessing debt you can have and you can pay based on your salary. The Debt-to-Income Ratio will strategically place your money to reply your current debt. Professional lenders use this equation to evaluate whether a debtor can really has the ability to pay the debt on his/her current income.

The formula is very simple:

Total Debt (Good or Bad) / Total Net Income Month)

= Debt-to-Income Ration

Example:

Juan's take home pay is 13,000pesos. His total monthly debt (credit card, housing loan, salary loan) is 4,000pesos.

Total Debt (Good or Bad) divided by Total Net Income (Month) equals Debt-to-Income Ration

12,000 / 4,000 = 0.33 or 33%

The Meaning

A low debt-to-income ratio shows a good balance between debt and income. Financial advisers suggests a good 10-20% as Debt-to-Income Ratio.

A higher debt-to-income on the other hand suggests that a person has too much debt for his income. Thiscan cause financial loop hole in the long run.

Looking at Juan's Debt-to-Income Ratio as an example means that 33% of Juan's salary just goes to pay off debt. This percent is alarming because it it is almost 50% of what Juan is getting on a monthly basis.

So what should Juan do?

1. Create a Budget

Add debt on the amount you need to pay. If you remember the 50-20-30 Rule of Budgeting you can use this and alter the 30% for Lifestyle Fund to your Debt-Payment Fund. With 12,000 income Juan can use 6,000 (50%) for essential expenses, 4,200 (35%) for debt-payment and 1,800 (15%) for savings fund.

2. Pay the Most Expensive Debt First

According to Dave Ramesey's Money Makeover a great strategy to get out of debt fast is to pay the most expensive debt first. Arrange your debt from highest to lowest interest rate (or even amount) and alongside write down the maximum amount you can pay monthly.

3. Don't Get into More Debt

Pay first your current debt before accumulating a new debt. This maybe a hard one but just please, refrain yourself from getting into more debt.

4. Find out means to decrease your expenses

There may be items and habits you do that cause you to spend more than your means. Kyle's guest post will teach you how to really live below your means.

5. Increase you income

If your goal is to really pay your debt then you might need to look for extra income.

The holiday season is not just for celebrations but also a great time to earn some cash. There are plenty business ideas you can start with zero to low starting capital and even at the comfort of your own home. Here are 5 business ideas to start and make money from this -ber month in the Philippines.

1. Puto Bumbong and Bibingka Business

Both Puto Bumbong and Bibingka are staple snack during the holidays season especially those who attend the Simbang Gabi. This can be a good opportunity for to make extra money by starting a puto bumbong and bibingka stall on a place close to church. You might need a starting capital of 3,000 to 5,000 pesos depending on the quantity you plan to sell. Puto Bumbong and Bibingka both sells around 25-50pesos per serving. Most prefer to sell puto-bumbong and bibingka during the holiday season till month of January while others sell whole year round.

Below are recipe ideas I found at pinoyraket.blogspot.com:

PUTO BUMBONG #1

Ingredients

- Five (5) kilograms of glutinous rice

- One (1) cup ordinary rice

- One (1) tablespoon of food coloring (Lilac)

- One (1) kilo of freshly grated matured coconut

- Margarine

- Sugar

Procedure:

Mix glutinous rice, ordinary rice and food coloring. Soak in water for four hours. Slowly grind using a stone grinder or manual grinder. Be sure not to put too much water in while grinding, this will delay drying of milled ingredients. Too much water will cause the mixture to be sticky. Put milled ingredients onto cotton cloth. Tie corners of the cloth. Let it drip. When the mixture is almost dried, press it using a heavy object to remove excess water. Let stand overnight.
Remove the milled ingredients from the cloth. Place it on finely woven cotton cloth. Mix and crush the milled ingredients using your hand until the finest particles pass through the cotton and fall into a container. Collect the particles.
Boil water using the steamer. Cover it with custom-made-cover with nozzles big enough to fit bamboo tubes or metal cylinders. Cover the nozzles with cotton cloth.
Grease cylinders with margarine then half-fill cylinders with milled ingredients. Cover the other end of the cylinder with cotton cloth. Fit the opposite end into the nozzle. Steam will come out of the cylinder when it is cooked. Before removing Puto Bumbong from the cylinder, invert position to ensure proper cooking.
To remove Puto bumbong from the cylinder, hold it in a vertical position and gently tap it out over a plate.
Put sugar and freshly grated coconut as toppings. Best when served hot with ginger tea.

PUTO BUMBONG #2

Ingredients:

1 cup malagkit (glutinous) rice

6 tablespoon of pirurutong (black rice)

4 cups of water

Mature coconut, shredded

Margarine

Sugar

Instructions:

Wash the malagkit and pirurutong, then soak in water for 3-4 hours.
Then grind the rice. Let it dry on a strainer.
Soak the bumbong/(Slender Bamboo) in oil and scatter with shredded mature coconut. Fill ¾ of the bumbong with the grind rice and put it on a steamer. Let it cook.
Then remove the puto on the bumbong, apply margarine, coconut and sugar. Serve.

PUTO BUMBONG #3

Ingredients

- 1 Kilogram malagkit (glutinous) rice, mixed with

- 125 grams ordinary rice

- 1 pc mature coconut, shredded

- butter or margarine

- violet food coloring

- banana leaves

- water

- salt

- sugar

* Soak malagkit and ordinary rice mixture in salted water with violet food coloring for 1 hour.

* Let dry overnight by putting inside a flour sack.

* Put something heavy on top to squeeze out water.

* Mixture is ready for cooking the following morning.

* Heat steamer (lansungan) with enough water.

* Put a small amount of rice mixture inside bamboo tubes(bumbong).

* Attached bamboo tubes to lansungan or steamer.

* When steam comes out of bamboo tubes, remove and immediately push out puto bumbong.

* Top with coconut shred and sugar before serving.

BIBINGKA (Coconut rice desert)

Ingredients:

- 2 1/2 lb (5 1/2 cups)mochi rice

- 1 can (12 oz) frozen coconut milk, thawed

- 1 pkg (1 lb.)dark brown sugar

- bananna leaves

Procedure:

Rinse rice and cook in rice cooker. In a saucepan, combine coconut milk and 1 1/4 cups of the brown sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 20 minutes. Wilt banana leaves over low heat on electric stove; line a 13 X 9 X 2 inch baking pan. Preheat electric oven to 350 degrees F. Put cooked rice into a large bowl. Reserving 1/2 cup of the coconut milk mixture, stir remainder and remaining brown sugar evenly into the hot rice. Put into prepared pan. Top with the reserved 1/2 cup coconut milk mixture. Bake for 20 minutes, then broil for five minutes to set topping. Cut into small pieces. Makes 45 servings.

2. Christmas Bazaar (RTW, accessories, cosmetics, etc.)

A ton of bazaar will surely pop up now that the -ber month season has begun. If you want a quick extra cash then join a bazaar to sell any ready-to-wear items, accessories, cosmetics and other products. People love to shop during the Christmas season and with a small capital you can easily get the return of your investment through price mark up.

How to sell on Christmas Bazaar?

First, decide on what you want to sell. Look for what's trendy this season and what you think your friends and family will like.
Next, come up with supplies. It is important to have your items to be sold already available before you even sign up as exhibitor in a bazaar.
Then, research on bazaar near your area. Most common bazaars during holidays in the Philippines are Noel Bazaar, Manila Sundance Bazaar and/or Trendsetters Bazaarr. Visit their FB Page or Instagram site for contact info. You directly ask for information on how to reserve a spot on their bazaar. Bazaar Exhibitor fee range from 2,500 to 5,000pesos daily depending on location.
Your post-holiday to list includes creating your own instagram shop/FB page to continue selling your item of choice even though the Christmas season is already over.

3. Baked Holiday-themed Cakes and Pastries

Another great extra income idea is selling holiday-themed cakes, pastries and goodies to your friends, family and workmates. People love pretty things and you'll surely get a lot of customers who would either buy your product as a gift or just want to eat. Common starting capital you need is below 5,000pesos and you can market your products .

Why I Choose To Be a Financially Independent Pinay

Today I declare my choice to become a financially independent Pinay. I want to empower myself to learn, earn, save, invest and give on my own without dependence to my parents, any family members, friends, boyfriend (well I don't have one), partner or debt. I want a full control on where and how I spend my hard earned money without the need to ask permission to someone (or anyone). I am not being selfish... I am just choosing the road less traveled.

I am taking the whole "financially independent Pinay" seriously. At 22, I want to build a stronger financial foundation that I can rely. I don't want to wait for a man to secure my finances. I want to do everything I could today and not waste the time, energy, resources I have thinking there'll be a man meant to be my provider.

Here's what I am thinking

I want to have money on my own.
I want to have a stable source of income other than "a job".
I want to have my own "personal savings".
I want my own house and lot, car and retirement plans.
I want to support my parents on my own means for what they truly deserve.
I want to buy my future boyfriend or spouse a gift or treat him using my own money.
I want to avoid the regret of not working, saving and investing enough to fulfill my own lifestyle.
I want a future relationship without bitterness, dissatisfaction or discontent when it comes to money.
I want to be entitled with my own right to control and decide when it comes to finances.
I want to be the sole architect of my financial future.

I have been blessed with the best parents ever. My father is a good provider while my mother is a hard-working. But now that they are both near the retirement age I often hear them talk about money regrets. My Mama in particular will share how she wished she saved "some money" to use on her own someday.

Imagine the struggle of asking your partner whether it's okey to buy this or buy that all the time.

So my point in choosing to become a financially independent Pinay is simply because...I want to live a life where I am entitled to more than I can actually afford. I want to live a life where I can pursue a career of my choice and still get a grip on my finances. I want to live a life where I can easily give and share my blessings to others without worrying what will happen next to my funds.

Budgeting

I have this on and off relationship to my budget but I realized how important a budget can be. Now that I am using the 50-20-30 Rule of Budgeting almost every month I was able to determine easily where my income goes. My spending habits changed a lot because I have limit myself to just 50% of my net salary for essential expenses and 30% for personal needs and wants. My savings grew because now I automatically save 20% of my net salary without excuses.

I want to come clean and honest that I overspend most of the time. And so my approach is to undergo some managed spending. I set a daily allowance for my food and transportation to work. I must say that September turned out to be a great month for the blog and my finances. I had a number of events and was able to hit my highest pageviews so far. To spice up a little I decided to add an "Income Report" on my Monthly Quick Recap. This income report is devoted solely on my side hustles or the things I do outside my day job. I earned 8,000pesos in September for Event Hosting Alone.

September is a good month since I got not just one but three successful event booking. I hosted a 21st Birthday and two weddings. If I can just market my event hosting more I know I can earn more than 8,000 extra money in a month. I only rely on referral at the moment and wasn't able to create ads or any other means to tie up with wedding venues, wedding coordinators, caterers and other event suppliers.

Next Action:

Finalize Marketing Spiel for Tie-Ups
Start sending email once marketing spiel is done to potential suppliers
Send follow up message on FB Page

Next Month's Target Extra Income: 12,000pesos

I earned $36.19 USD in September for Freelance Writing.

Towards the mid of September I started finding clients again whom I can do freelance writing. I got an email request for my availability and now I work part-time on an SEO Content Writing Service based in Bangkok, Thailand. I am per-project based so the earning looks really small. I did just about 5 500-word blog posts for the company and it took me less than an hour to write each post.

Next Action:

Create a Portfolio Corner on the blog to turn visitors to potential clients.
Find one more client (if possible).

I earned 1,500pesos in September for a Sponsored Post

I have talked about the many ways bloggers earn income online and sponsored post is one of the fast and most effective means. For September I got a sponsored post invitation for a reputable company and I can't be anymore proud and happy. Hope to receive more opportunities like this in the coming months.

October Plans on the Blog and Side Hustles

Manage My Time More. I still feel that I lack the proper time management when it comes to blogging and my side hustles. I want to maximize my day and really be intentional on the tasks I do and the time I allot for everything. Glad I have my bullet journal set up for October already and I am looking forwards for a great month ahead.
Promote more. I don't do any promotion at all on my blog, hosting and freelance writing. I know I need to promote more if my goal is to be noticed. I want launch a resource page here on SavingsPinay to gather pageviews as well as loyal readers. I also want to launch a new mailing list where I can send newsletter weekly without pause or break. I feel sorry for my past newsletter subscribers whom I FAILED ULTIMATELY. Babawi po ako. Promise!
Search for other ways to increase my extra income. I am not satisfied with my current extra income so I am pumped up to search more ways to increase this. I am thinking a lot about Affiliate Marketing and I'll see how I can venture to this as another blog income stream.

I have mentioned on My New Budget and Spending Tracker how I track my spending. I believe this what makes the big difference when it comes to managing your money. The ability to track everything you spend on a particular day. Once you have master this you will surely earn financial discipline that your future self will thank you for.
My Second Paycheck (30th of the Month) is usually bigger than my first paycheck (15th of the Month) so I maximize it to go automatically on my emergency fund. How? I have two Metrobank Accounts, my payroll account and my personal account. I transfer immediately a dedicated amount from my payroll account to my personal account through online banking. I invest!!! If you still have no idea on how to invest I encourage you to check last week's post How to Invest for Beginners in the Philippines. I added a quick story on how I became an investor at 19 years old.
Monetary Gift to my parents. Actually my parents don't ask anything from me (from us) at all but if you still remember my 20-something panic I have this thing for my parents... I feel like there's so much they deserve and I want to do for them so badly. My gift isn't much but my hope is it could ease their financial burden somehow.
Of course I need my relaxation and personal pampering once in a while. And by once in a while I mean once a week. To be honest this is a big loop hole in my finances and I know that I could save a lot if only I stop being such an impulsive shopper. If you go over my personal blog you'll know I had my mani-pedi experience at Let's Face It Trinoma, I also buy a new book every pay day and once a month I do some shopping. Last Monday's post on 4 Useful Tips to Live Within Your Means is a reminder for me to still live frugally no matter what.

Do You Have Any Side Jobs?

Now aside from my income (salary) I also make extra money through the many side jobs I do. This isn't a surprise for those who have been reading SavingsPinay since the beginning. My side jobs allowed me to save more, invest more and share more. This is something I am always thankful for to God --- that He blessed me with such gifts that turned me into a money-making machine. My post All About Making Extra Money in the Philippines will prove you that there is soooo much ways you can earn extra income.

Currently here are the hustles that let me earn extra on the side:

Event Hosting for all Occasion is something started when I was 17 years old college student. I earn per event or special occasion I book.
Wedding Planner/Wedding Coordinator is something I venture after a year of hosting. I have a passion in planning events and wedding in particular give me so much happiness. I gathered my own wedding coordinator team and have been to Tagaytay, Antipolo, Batangas etc.
Makeup and Hairstylist for Special Occasion is something I offer once in a while. I do hair and makeup for brides, entourage, debutant and guests.
Blogging. My blogs SavingsPinay and IzzaGlino both started as a hobby and now they manage to give me some side income. I earn through ad spaces, sponsored post, blog contents and affiliate marketing. I also manage to get clients thanks to my blogs since it became my online portfolio.
Freelance Writing. Writing has been part of my life since the beginning. I've been part of the school newspaper from elementary to high school. I took up BS Journalism in college and I currently work as a Technical Writer in Makati. It became apparent that I will become a freelance writer someday. It was the book So You Want to be a Freelancer that motivated me to enrich my writing skills and offer my service. Today, I work part-time on an SEO Content Writing Service based in Bangkok, Thailand.

The money I get from side hustle related to event from hosting, coordination and hair&makeup are all paid in cash so it is actually harder to keep. My next action it to open a passbook savings account in BDO since the minimum initial money I need to is only 5,000pesos. I believe having a passbook will ultimately help me track my earnings. My plan is to deposit my earning as soon as possible to my passbook savings account.

All my Blogging earnings are still on hold since I haven't reached my payment threshold yet. It is actually harder to earn money blogging than I thought plus the fact that I only started getting serious in transitioning blog to business come early 2016.

My freelance writing payments are well-kept on my Paypal account and I use primarily on online payments like buying this blog's theme of Etsy.

What Should You Do with Your Extra Money?

If you have any extra money whether it came from a side job, bonus or unexpected gift then here are some recommendations on where you should invest it:

1. Save it

Excess cash can be used to fund your savings. Open a new savings account or use any separate account your have deposit it.

2. Invest it

You can also choose to invest your extra money on a mutual fund or Unit Investment Trust Fund for example. You’ve probably received the advice “live within your means” before. The thing is that living within one’s means is largely subjective. Everyone has different set of financial circumstances, and therefore, living within their means will be largely different.

Between the differences in finances, there are a few principles when it comes to living within your means that still hold true, and here are some tips to show you how to live within your means.

Lifestyle traps

The trap of lifestyle inflation is the biggest and least obvious one to spot and dealing with it is essential whether you earn a lot or less. The trend for most people is to spend a little more as their pay grades go up, rationalizing that it’s fine since they can afford it. There’s a difference between being actually able to afford it, and playing at being able to afford it.

The difference between the two is that you’ve actually got more income than you’re spending. If the case is you end up uneasy and waiting for payday, you can’t afford the lifestyle you’ve been trying to live.

Know your net worth

Figuring out your net worth will give you a better understanding of how your finances are working for you. While your annual salary is a figure on its own, you’ll have to include other income streams in order to get your total net worth.

One formula for it – written by Burn Gutierrez – involves adding up your total assets, consisting of the following:

Add your: Savings + Retirement Accounts + Investments + Any Real Estate + Other Income Streams
Add together any outstanding debts you might have together. This includes constant bills, like credit card bills, insurance payments, loan payments and the like.
The sum from your debts must be subtracted from the sum of your total assets. If the result is negative, then at least according to Burn’s guide, you’re living well beyond your means.

Cash is king

The thing about living on a credit card is that it’d be all too easy for you to rack up debt. Living completely on cash, or a debit card, ensures that you can only spend what you actually have.

A great many people think that a credit card is one way to prove that you’ve got the means – and there are times when a credit card is a great tool to have. That time is when you’ve got the financial responsibility to handle paying those bills full and on time every time.

Developing the habit of using only cash or debit means you won’t consider buying or spending unless you’re 100% sure that you have the money for it.

Success is relative

A lot of things can define success, and much of it is just as subjective as the means you use to attain it. A large part of considering yourself successful comes from what you deem as the most important wants and needs in your life.

Figuring out what success means to you can allow you to make changes in the way you think about your money.

Overall

Being able to live solidly within your means carries with it an understanding that there’s a time and place for spending your hard-earned cash, and a time for conserving and saving for whatever future goals you have.

A firm understanding of these will allow you to live within your means, but comfortably.

It was year 2013 when I (impulsively) did my biggest financial decision so far. I invested in a Mutual Fund under First Metro Asset Management, Inc. I resigned from SEO-Content Writer job and used my last salary as an initial fund and money to do all the step-by-step procedures. I felt so accomplished upon receiving my Statement of Account. I now own "some shares" on big companies in the country from fast food giant, property developers and banks etc. I was definitely on cloud nine since I was only 19 years old yet I was able to try the world of investing.

But it takes a lot of financial discipline to remain on top of your investing game. I have my ups and downs financially. It was such an impulsive move since I didn't foresee that the next job I'll be having would pay me less. I failed to invest for two consecutive months.

The Difference between Saving Money and Investing Your Money

It is important to understand the difference between saving and investing your money. This can give you a better perspective in your financial life.

Saving Money is low risk and very liquid. Meaning the purpose is to keep an amount for you to use on a short time frame. For example you save money for a new gadget, a birthday dinner and/or a holiday vacation.

Investing Money is high risk and not liquid at all. Meaning the purpose is to put an amount for you to use in a long time frame. You invest your money to build wealth and get something in return.

To put simply, you save money in case you will be needing it in the near future. If you're not going to need the money and you want to let it grow then you should invest it. The key is to save and invest. You can't be rich by just saving money on the bank because they offer too little of interest rate for your money to grow. You also can't be secured if you just keep on investing your money without proper savings.

There are many different types of investment vehicles you can choose from. It all depends upon what type of investor you are and how much money you have as an initial investment.

Traditional Investment Vehicles

1. Savings Deposit

This is the safest and most common type of investing vehicle. All you need to do is to park your money on your desired bank. This will cost you minimal opening fee, no risk at all but will also earn you little interest or growth. 2. Time Deposit

My father once advised me to open a time deposit especially if I already have enough savings. This yields better than a savings account but you can't use your money for a given time frame in order to get the benefit of the interest this means that if you decide to withdraw earlier than the maturity period you'll lose some money rather than gain.

3. Treasury Bills

This is an uncommon type of investment vehicles but may result to a higher return than savings account. You lend your money to the government so the risk is lower but then you need a higher amount to open an account.

4. Retail Treasury Bonds

This investment is like treasury bills wherein you are lending your money in the government. Retail Treasury Bond was created to accommodate small investors that can only spare a good 5000pesos in their initial investment. The result of continually investing in an RTB has way higher return than Time Deposit.

5. Stocks

This type of investment comes with the highest risk among every other investment vehicles but the return will amaze you just as long as you know how to invest intelligently. Owning a share of stock in a company means you taking an ownership stake in the company too. COL Easy Investment Plan is one of the main option when it comes to directly investing in stocks.

6. Mutual Fund

This investment vehicles allows small investors to put money on stocks indirectly. This means you will have to entrust your money on a financial institution and will be invested in a diversified portfolio depending on your investment characteristic. Myth #1. Investing needs a lot of money

Yes, but NOT at all times. There are investment vehicles that require as low as 5,000pesos to begin. The government have been very supportive for people to learn the value of investment and a lot nowadays require only minimal amount to start.

Myth #2. Investing is too risky

The risk factor in investing is inevitable but its all worth it. No investment can guarantee returns overnight, the longer your money stays invested the better the return. This is also the reason why you need to start investing as young as possible.

Myth #3. You must be an "economic major" or "math genius" to be an investor

Very wrong. I, for example, is very bad in numbers but I do love investing. The concepts in investing are very basic and you can easily follow through to calculate your gains and/or loses.

Myth #4. Investing is all about "being rich"

Yes being rich is the ultimate goal if you are investing but the process will give you so much more learning. You'll learn to budget just to have enough savings to invest. You'll also learn how to be financially independent at a young age and find different sources of income since investing itself is so addicting. Step 1. Get on Track with Your Finances

Before you try to invest for the first time you should first sort things out financially. You should know your current income and whether it could supply to your needs in addition to the investment you'll be making. Step 2. Assess What Kind of Investor You Are

Next step is to know what type of investor you are. This will guide accordingly on the right kind of investment to make that will maximize your potential income.

There are Three Types of Investors

Conservatives or those who have low risk tolerance. They lean more on a portfolio that offers steady growth with low risk. They are easily swayed by negative news on surrounding the market and will need further explanation before making a financial decision.

Dynamics are people who have the highest risk appetite as an investor. They want capital growth through long-term investing. They do not get easily scared if they loss money for they remain positive that as long as they continue to invest things will change.

Balanced are investors who are a mixture of the two. Their risk tolerance is on a medium level. They love capital appreciation through investing in a long period of time but will still get fearsome in case things don't go along their way.

Now there are three deciding factors that could determine what kind of investor you are namely age, years you want to invest and risk you are okey to take. In a normal situation, the younger you are the more time you have to grow your money and the more risk you are able to take.

As you grow older you have more needs and responsibilities in life that can lead to shorter waiting period for your investment to grow and lower risk you can take.

Step 3. Choose Your Investment Vehicle

Once you have determined what kind of investor you are then it will be easier for you to choose your first investment vehicle. Conservative investors often go for time deposits, special savings accounts and government securities because they are a very sure type of investments.

Balanced investors love Mutual Fund and Unit Investment Trust Fund on Equities and Bonds. They may also choose investing on direct stock market but on very selected and established companies that already have proven track record.

Dynamic investors on the other hand are willing to trade on stock market or try non-traditional investment vehicle as a way of diversification.

Step 4. Learn Your Investment Strategy or Style

Once you have chosen your investment you are ready to start investing. You will learn a lot along your investor journey from the right strategy to apply. I, for example have been a big fan of the peso-cost averaging method on my first mutual fund investments.

Step 5. Assess and Review

Make sure that you always check how your investments are going. Review whether your portfolio still satisfies you as an investor. Withdraw your money in case something unwanted is happening or if you feel like the market is literally closing down on your set of portfolios.

Step 6. Diversify

The final step is to diversify your investments. Diversification is a financial technique that reduce the risk factor of investing by allocating your investments under other investment vehicles, other industries, and/or under other varied categories. You can diversify among different financial vehicles, assets such as bonds and stocks and market values. Do not just put your money on a time deposit account but aim high to have your other money on mutual funds, stock market or even a real-estate property.

The key thing is you need to know whether your diversification helps you in attaining your financial goals. You'll know when is too much naman because we are talking about your hard-earned money. Investing in the Philippines is very easy to be honest. You just need the strong will to begin and the financial discipline to maintain a positive finances. How to Blog and Earn in the Philippines

Blogging had ultimately changed my life for the better. I am so thankful and blessed that I discovered this early. Having a blog allowed me to get my creative juices flowing. It made me learn a lot of new things about myself. It opened opportunities for me to meet people and work with others who have the same passion. It also gave me an idea that earning extra income online is attainable. If you haven't thought of blogging for the money then maybe this article will enlighten you.

My Story as a Blogger

It was year 2013 when I first entered the blogger arena. I got inspired by a lot of blogs I read since I was a college freshman like Ms. Aisa Ipac of Drowning Equilibrium (I even interviewed her for a project in college), Ms. Ana Gonzales of The Fashion Commuter, Ms. Nikki Tiu of AskMeWhats, etc. My blog focus on makeup and ukay finds - two things I am totally in love with.

Since then this blog has been in a ton of makeover. From new topics I introduce to posts I have deleted because they're not that good. My photos and how I edit them also changed dramatically. I also spent way more time blogging than what I once did. Blogging became a big part of me trying to be an adult. It had been my creative outlet, a part of myself I can be proud of --- my identity.

I have never been this serious over something in my life. My blogs, IzzaGlino - A beauty and lifestyle blog for frugal Pinays and SavingsPinay - A financial journey of a common Pinay, are both my babies. I am happy when I see them, when I feed them with posts, when I spend time with them and of course when they achieve a milestone. Both sites have consumed almost half my life this past three to four years. And I have zero regrets at all.

Starting a blog is way easier than one could imagine. All it takes is following below simple steps:

Blogs come in different niche depending on a blogger's interest. I started a Fashion and Beauty Blog, IzzaGlino because that's where my interest was. Then came my love for financial education that led to the arrival of SavingsPinay.

After you've decided on the central theme of your blog, your task now is to come up with the perfect name that your audience can easily remember. It is also ideal to name your blog out of your real name to create branding and to not limit you in what you could post in your blog. You can also be very specific and base your name on the blog theme you chose. What matters is that you strategically choose the name of your blog.

Step 3. Choose Your Blog Platform

Blog platforms are available as an easy way to build a blog. All you have to do is sign-up, enter your specific details of your blog and choose your blog template. The most common blog platforms are Blogger, WordPress and Tumblr. You can also build your own website provided that you pay for hosting and domain name.

Blogger is a perfect platforms for beginners who need a user-friendly blog platform. You can create multiple blogs in one account. Since Blogger is owned by Google it is also way easier to top the Google ranking. You can easily connect Google Adsense to start monetizing your space and you have a pool of widgets to make your blog look even better.

Wordpress is ideal for those who aim to have their blog more professional. The templates that Wordpress have are more classy-looking rather than Blogger Templates. You have a lot of control over how your blog post will be published on the web. Wordpress also offers functional widgets that go hand in hand in your goal to maximize the potential of your blog.

Tumblr is more for personal blogging. It is very easy to set up and more on a social media type of blog because people can retweet the blog posts and follow your blog.

The platform also offers a lot of beautiful theme you can choose from. This is also a great platform for photo blogs that involve fashion and travel.

Step 4. Design Your Blog

Depending on the platform you choose for your blog, you might need to spend time designing how you want your blog to be seen by the public. Designing a Blogger, Wordpress and Tumblr will soon be up on my blog. There are Free Themes and Premium (Paid) Themes to choose from.

Step 5. Start Blogging

Once you are happy with how your blog looks you can now start with the actual blogging. You undergo a series of blog writing, producing image for the blog and editing. As a beginner you may or may not opt for an editorial calendar and just use an old notebook to plan your content. You may have heard this a thousand times already but yes, content is the king when it comes to blogging. Without a valuable and relatable posts then nobody will notice your blog at all. Make your post excellent as always so that your visitors will keep on returning to your site.

Below are the different things I've tried and I am still doing to make extra money. I also mentioned some related links that will help you more in your journey.

Become an Event Emcee for all Occasion. On October 2011 I created an online advertisement about my talent in hosting. I have never hosted professionally but people around me knew that its something I can and I love to do. I used to emcee school programs and family gatherings plus I took up a Communication course. In 2011 alone I manage to emceed about 50 special occasions. To date I am still hosting and its one of the side jobs that gave me soooo much extra money.

Wedding Planner/Wedding Coordinator. I also widen my horizon in event management and tried to sell my service as a wedding planner/coordinator. It was a nice experience sharing my ideas to the couple and helping them sort out ideas for their big day. I created my own wedding coordinator team and have been to Tagaytay, Antipolo, Batangas etc.

Makeup and Hairstylist for Special Occasion. My love for makeup made me earn instant extra income. I have widen my event management experience by applying my knowledge in makeup and hairstyling. Making debutant, bride, entourage and guests beautiful makes me happy.

Invest. One of the biggest financial decision I've made so far is opening my FAMI-SALEF account. It is a mutual fund investment where you and other investors money are pooled together to fund a common financial goal. There are no guarantees when it comes to investing but the younger you invest the better. Time will be your greatest ally to make your money grow. Start a Blog. If you love writing and sharing on the internet then why not start a blog? You can earn through advertisements, affiliate marketing, sponsored posts and the traffic you get through your blog. Create a YouTube Channel. If you''re comfortable talking to the camera like me then why not start your own YouTube Channel? I have a beauty and lifestyle YouTube Channel that helped me earn some money through ads and views. All you need is a good camera, laptop, internet connection and you're ready to go.

Create an Instagram Shop. I also tried selling stuff online through Instagram. Creating your store is free, marketing is fast and the return of investment is good. There are a lot of things you can sell online from clothing items, accessories, phone cases, baked goods etc.

Freelance Writing Online. With my degree in Journalism I decided to try doing some freelance content writing work online. It turned out great with clients from abroad asking for web pages and other writing materials for a high pay. $$$

Why Earning Extra Money is Soooooo Important

How to make extra money is one of my favorite topic to search online. I crave for new ideas to generate income aside from my full-time job. I know reading the list above will prove how crazy I am in finding side hustles to keep my financial life in a good balance. My main goal is to retire young and enjoy my adult life while cash coming passively thanks to the side jobs I have built.

I know that many will contest that they don't have much time to spend on another work load. You may have a ton of excuse to settle on being an employee. But I want to open your eyes in the reality that you need extra income too. We all have 24 hours in a day and it is what we do with our spare time that determines how successful we will be in the future.

You may have that emergency fund or travel fund written on your goals every time but nothing happens because your current is too low. That's where a side job come in place. The money you earn from your hobbies and passions can get you closer to your dreams. You have more means to save, to invest and to share.

Extra income no matter how small or big it is opens opportunity for you to achieve more. All the side hustles I did and I still do helped me to become the person I am today. It definitely increased my knowledge, widen my network and explored my potentials. Now I am not afraid to turn my idea into something for I know that if only I believe and I do the proper action I can definitely generate extra income with it.

How to Earn Extra Income in the Philippines?

Do you wonder how you can earn extra income aside from your daily allowance? How about the income you make in your work? Then fret no more because I am here to give you the best possible ideas that you can earn extra income in a safe and easy way.

All of us needs money to buy our essentials. But I know at some point we will have those moments when we feel like what we earn is not enough. Sabi nga di ba "Sweldo lang naman ang di nataas" This statement is the exact reason why we need to be more productive in finding out means to fit the salary in your expenses.

I realized that having an extra income does not just add up on my finances but also add up on my outlook in life. I became more positive in life because I know something aside from my profession that I can rely to if and then unexpected things happen. You too can do it!

So how will you find extra sources of income?

1. Find your Skill and Offer it.

Everyone of us has his/her own unique skill that God had blessed us to have and to share. Find it and offer it. Mine is hosting so I did earn an extra means of living through it. Maybe you know how to play the guitar or the piano. Or maybe you have basic photography skills. Whatever it is know it, develop it and start offering it to your friends and soon potential clients.

2. Be Paid for Your Services.

Don't settle for a free service unless you are just starting in the business. You may offer for free but make sure its for portfolio use only. Once you've built your portfolio have your services paid. The main reason is that you need money to fund your talent. You will never earn extra if you don't stop offering for FREE.

3. Market what you know.

There are things we have more knowledge about than the others. For example, I know how to apply makeup so I decided to do makeup videos. Little by little I earn few dollars with the views plus I get to share my tips and tricks for fellow Filipinas too. Marketing your knowledge means having a broader way in letting others know that you can do this and you can do that. Create an album in your Facebook page about your skill and make a status that you can offer free tutorial or lesson. Once potential clients line up you can now create advertisement in Sulit for others to be paid.

4. Sell something.

As simple as it is, selling is a one solid way that you will start earning. Create an Instagram account and sell unusual stuff. You can also have a garage sale. Now that it's Christmas for sure gift items will be a must so you as early as now, start selling online or at your neighborhood.

5. Sell your creativity.

If you don't have any product to sell then why not sell your creativity? Maybe you have some potential in doing sketches of persons, you can earn cash through it.

Earning extra income has been very simple nowadays thanks to social media. It is easier to post and to tag people letting your network grow with less work. The thing is you need to take that big step. Let it go and be amazed of what will happen next.

I've been loyal to National Bookstore for a while now and applying for their loyalty rewards card is something I had no regrets doing. I earn points for each purchase I make which will become e-purse to pay for my next item if I wanted. It is actually one of the many rewards card I have that I really use and I never leave my house without.

What is "Laking National" National Bookstore Loyalty Program anyway?

"Laking National" National Bookstore Loyalty Program works like any other rewards card in the country. You apply for the card, pay a minimum amount for membership fee (or collect receipts for free card) and present your card every time you purchase a product to a particular store or service. I personally shop at National Bookstore and I bet every Pinoy has and will always be National Bookstore junkie. It is like heaven for a self-confessed bookworm and planner addict like me. It houses almost every school and office supply you need plus other unexpected materials you didn't even know you will be in need of.

Pay 100pesos membership fee at any National Bookstore counter. There is a discount for students as long as you present a valid school ID. Discount membership price is 60pesos.

Receipt for the renewal fee is valid for thirty days (30) from the date of payment and can only be used in the same branch where the payment was made. I'm thinking of renewing my card to avail the 1000points bonus.

The One Thing You Can Do Today To Start Saving Money

We all want to save money but not all of us is ready to commit to what it takes to succeed in create a money cushion. I've been building my emergency fund since forever and up until today I am still miles away from my target. But I am not giving up and you too should not. Today I'll share to you the one thing you can do today to start saving money. Its easy, fast and effective and I bet not everyone has considered this matter yet. Just last week I had a workmate who asked me about budget and such then I learned one of the biggest mistake we all make when trying to save money. That huge mistake is not having a dedicated bank account for savings.

Why Have a Second Bank Account

The common situation is that we own a payroll account from a certain bank. People think that this savings account is good enough to get by in terms of our financial but applying for a second one will surely change your money game.

Reason #1. Automate Your Savings

Banking nowadays is much better compared to before because it offers automatic money transfer ideal for those who are serious in saving their hard-earned money. Automating your savings is the best and the easiest way you assure that you make it to your money goals either yearly or monthly.

How To Do It?

First, apply for a second savings account under your payroll account.

Once your application is approve you will need to apply both on a online banking program where you'll need a username and password to log in. For Metrobank Users I have a post on How to Enroll in Metrobank Direct Online Banking you can CLICK HERE.

Application to online banking may differ from bank to bank but below are the common steps taken from my post The Basics of Online Banking:

1. Visit your bank's website.

2. Check out their Online Banking button. This should be available on the top most part of the website.

3. Follow through the online enrollment procedure.

4. An email will be sent to your inbox for confirmation.

On your online banking dashboard you will see your two applied accounts and transferring is a click of a button away. You can now see your dedicated second savings account growing with your savings.

Reason #2. Back Up Account

I misplaced my payroll account one Saturday of June and had no idea where I put it. I immediately called the Metrobank Hotline to ask what I should do. I needed to withdraw my salary since I am going on a medical check up that very day. To my surprise the agent told me that it is either I freeze my bank account which will not allow me to do any withdrawal at all even if via counter. Also if I freeze my payroll account I will need to undergo a whole lot of procedure and wait until Monday.

Then I remember my second savings account which holds my emergency fund. I immediately checked whether my salary is still intact on the payroll account and transfer everything on my second count without a doubt. I was able to withdraw and have my check up. What I learned from this experience is how a second bank account can save you from cases of missing cards, identity theft and other unwanted situation. This will give you an access to your money without worry.

Reason #3. Designate Your Money Better

Another obvious reason why a second savings account works best in saving money is because you can easily designate where your money go. If you only have your payroll account to rely then you will easily lose track of your savings.

Here's how a second savings account helped me designate my money better:

I automatically transfer an "X" amount of money to my emergency fund right away. This second savings account only has my savings.

As much as possible I keep at least 500pesos on my payroll account every payday for additional savings.

Without a second savings account I'll probably mix my savings to my spending money. A second bank account allows me to save first then spend later. This helped me a lot to save money no matter what. Also one great reason is the fact that both bank accounts will earn interest for you. This maybe little but better than nothing, right?

Your Action Plan

Now here's what I want you to do. Create a dedicated bank account for your savings. Better if you apply with the bank you already have (e.i. your payroll account) so you can do online bank transfer at ease.

If you already have a second savings account then start saving money now. Every pay day or every month fund your savings without fail. This will ensure you have enough savings in case emergency happen or to buy the things you want. To sum it up I highly suggest for you to have a second savings account solely for your saving fund. This is the one thing you can do today to start saving money. Applying for a savings account in the Philippines is very easy.

You just need visit your chosen bank and talk to a bank officer. You will be given Account Opening Form to fill-in. Next present two valid IDs and 2x2 photo and Your signature specimen. After about 15-20 minutes your savings account (physical card) is ready. Your next requirement is to change the PIN to your own personal choice. Easy, right?!

4 Ways To Get Your NSO Birth Certificate Fast and Easy

I finally got my NSO Birth Certificate!!! I was planning to get my passport this September and based on my research I will be needing my birth certificate as a requirement. I was about to ask my mother to apply my birth certificate for me but I was surprised of how fast and easy getting your birth certificate is nowadays. For busy people like me I compiled the different ways you can apply and get your NSO Birth Certificate. These four ways also applies when you are looking to get other important files like marriage certificate and certificate of no marriage as long as under the Philippine Statistics Authority (aka National Statistics Office) I hope it'll help those who have no time or no energy to wait long lines and apply.

1. Walk-in Applications at Serbilis Outlests

Let's start with the usual routine for those who doesn't like the whole online application and online payment process.

First, go to the Philippine Statistics Authority near you. You can CLICK HERE for the complete list of Census Serbilis Centers available in the Philippines that may process your copies of birth, marriage, death, certificate marriage, certificate of no marriage etc.

Second, once inside get your Queue Number from the Information Marshall and fill-up the application form. You can download the forms in THIS LINK as well as print and answer it before going to the NSO Serbilis Center. If not the Information Marshall will hand you the application form.

Make sure to fill up the form in PRINT letters (all capital) and check the box(es) that applies to your answer. Specify how many copies you are requesting. Note that the number of copies will affect how much you are going to pay for the request of your NSO Birth Certificate. Avoid erasures and write legibly so your application will run smoothly.

Application Form

Third, proceed to the Screeners' Desk. The screener will double check if the information you have provided is complete, consistent and readable. He/She will stamp it "Okay for Payment".

Fourth, Go to the Payment Area. There may be a queue depending on the time and day of your arrival. As much as possible come early to avoid long lines. You will be given a priority number after you have answered your application form. Look at the screen/monitor on the waiting area to see if your number is flashed already. You will be issued stamped Official Release with the date and time of release.

RATES:

Birth Certificate - 140pesos per copy

(same price of marriage and death certificates)

Certificate of No Marriage Record - 195pesos

Fifth, Proceed to the Releasing Area for requested documents. Your name will be called to signal that your birth certificate is ready to be claimed. The releasing clerk will have to see your Official Receipt. Be sure to check your copy for any errors.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Valid ID is required for both the owner and the requester of the birth certificate.
Forms are color-coded. White - Birth Certificate, Pink - Marriage Certificate, Yellow - Death Certificate, and Green - Certificate of No Marriage Record

2. Online Applications at E-census

For those who doesn't want to wait long line and has no time to go to Serbilis Center, you can also process online via E-census.

First, Go to www.ecensus.com.ph. Read the Terms and Conditions and click I Accept button to proceed.

Second, Fill-up the online requester's information and contact details. You need to input your Tax Identification Number (TIN) as well as exact contact and delivery details. Double check your answer before proceeding to next. You will be given a Request Reference Number you need as you pay online.

Third, Pay via the following available options:

If within the Philippines

Pay via online banking directly if you have BDO and Unionbank Accounts.
You can also pay via counter again at any BDO and UnionBank. Here are further instructions:

Go to any UnionBank OR BDO branch nationwide.
Fill out the Bill Payment Slip with below information

Company/Institution Name: E-Census

Client Name: Requester's Name (Your Name)

Subscriber Reference Number: Refers to your Request Reference Number

Amount: Amount due for your request. This will depend upon the number of copies you requested.

3. Make sure to safe-keep your validated payment sleep as proof of payment.

If Outside the Philippines

Pay online via credit card through the following process:

From the Acknowledgment page click "Pay online via credit card now"
Read the e-Census Terms and Conditions, and then click on "I Accept" to proceed.
Enter your Request Reference Number and click "Go"
Click "Proceed to Payment". You will be redirected to the Kabayan Central Networks, Inc. secure online payment site.
Enter your credit card information and then click "Process Transaction". Once you credit card payment is accepted, a payment acknowledgment will be displayed. You will then see Kabayan Cetral Networks, Inc. on your credit card statement.

Pay via BDO Remit Subsidiary Offices and Remittance Partners Abroad offering Kabayan Bills Bayad

*Only requests outside the Philippines can be paid via BDO Remit Subsidiary Offices and Remittance Partners Abroad offering Kabayan Bills Bayad.

***Your request will be updated from the following status WAITING FOR PAYMENT > PAID/FOR PROCESSING > IN PROCESS two (2) working days after payment confirmation has been received by BDO.

Go to any BDO Remit Subsidiary Offices and Remittance Partners Abroad offering Kabayan Bills Bayad.
Fill out the remittance form with the following information:

Corporation: E-CENSUS

Subscriber/Reference Number: Request Reference Number

Payment Amount (in US Dollars): Amount due for your request. This will depend upon the number of copies you requested.

3. Pay exact amount in US Dollars or its foreign currency equivalent plus the remittance service fee.

4. Keep safe the remittance receipt or invoice slip after the transaction has been successfully processed.

5. You can check the status of your remittance at BDO website under Remit Status Inquiry. Enter the reference number found on your receipt.

For delivery to other countries wait 6-8 weeks after payment. You can email ecensus@census.gov.ph in care you want your document through special courier and have it delivered earlier. There will additional courier fee subject to you.

3. Online Application via NSOHelpline.ph

This is for people who need their Birth Certificate ultra fast and easy. I ordered mine through NSOHelpline and received it the day after which was so surprising. Below is the step by step process I did.

Go to nsohelpline.ph
Click Order Now and choose the NSO Certificate you need.
Choose the purpose on why you are requesting for the certified true copy of your birth certificate. I answered Local Employment by the way.
Fill-up the online request form with the correct answer. Make sure all spaces are answered. Click "Continue" to proceed.
On the next page click whether you had done any changes to your birth certificate. Click "None" if there are no changes applied to your birth certificate ever.
Answer who will receive the certificate upon delivery.
Your order summary will show next. Make sure that all the information entered is correct. You will need to enter your current correct contact info, delivery address and check out summary. Click continue to proceed with Payment Procedures.

Expect your document within 2-3 working days upon receipt of payment though in my case I received it the following day. You will be asked to show your ID.

4. Via SM Business Center nationwide

After I ordered my Birth Certificate and got it the following day I proudly informed my Mom. She then told me that I can actually order my NSO Birth Certificate SM Business Center and it is fraction of a price though I have to wait a week for it to arrive. Still this is a nice option and definitely what I will do next time I need another copy of my birth certificate. Below is the process on how you can apply via SM Business Center.

Go to the nearest SM Mall and look for the SM Business Center. This is sometimes located inside the Department Store and HyperMarket or have a separate space.
Fill-up the Request Form (looks exactly like the picture I showed you on the Walk-In Application via NSO Serbilis Center) plus the added paper where you will also include a summary of the details you have provided on the request form.
Pay at the cashier. Make sure to keep safe your receipt and your claim stub as you will need them once your birth certificate is ready for releasing.

Plus 20pesos service fee per copy

You can claim your Birth Certificate within 4-6 days same branch where you applied your request. Present 1 valid ID upon claiming.

I feel like my whole Caramoan trip opened this side of myself that loves traveling. I have hiked to mountains and got to experience a day in Pampanga and Tagaytay but have never really put much attention into the whole me going places. After that trip I asked myself "where to next, Izza?". As a newbie wanderer, I am constantly checking Pinterest and other travel blogs for insider tips as I would want to embrace my love for exploration in the coming months.

But the SavingsPinay founder, I still want to stay frugal and travel on a budget. I want to enjoy a vacation without ruining my finances. So if you happen to be like me, here are the Essential Travel on a Budget Tips you might want to read before your next adventure begins.

On Flights and Transportation

My very first tip is to book your next trip in advance. Air fare increases as your planned date for the vacation goes near so if you have already decided on where to go and when to go why not seal the deal by booking your flight online. Try Traveloka. What's nice too is that they show the final prices already with no booking fee and no hidden costs at all making you avoid unforeseen charges.

It is also better to commute rather than rent a private van to get around the area. Taking the public mode of transportation will help you grasp the city well and explore better with your senses. There are hidden places, restaurants and other treasure escapade you might unleash as you either walk or follow the usual transport. Just be mindful of your belongings and as much as possible take a city map with you or have apps on your phone that can help you navigate safer.

On Hotels and Accommodations

Next to finding cheap flights is making sure you also save on booking hotel and accommodations. Where you stay on your vacation has deep impact on how enjoyable and fun your trip will be. Not to mention you and your family or friends safety. Below are the common deciding factors when choosing a place to stay.

1. Location. It should be in the center of where your itineraries are. Glad that most hotel booking sites nowadays has a View Map functionality so you can see how near or far your hotel is to the landmarks and activities you want to do. Also take note of its proximity to public transit. During my Pampanga trip with my eldest sister we were able to book a hotel at downtown proper situated right in the middle of where we will watch the Philippine Hot Air Balloon Festival and visit other attractions. We were able to save ton of money because of it. This was a complete opposite of what happened on my Tagaytay trip with my bestfriend Nica where in the hotel we booked was too far from the places in our itinerary. In the end we spent more time, money and effort going back and forth rather than exploring.

2. Price. Personally I don't like too expensive hotels especially if I will be on the road most the time. It is important to check the pictures on site especially the interior and see how clean and comfortable the place is. Make sure to compare prices from the main website of the hotel to the booking website of your choice for promos and discount codes you can use.

3. Facilities and Amenities. Basic amenities like free WiFi, parking, restroom, pool etc. should and must be available to make your stay more relaxed and free from stress.

4. Rating and Review. It is best to hear from others who have experienced what its like staying in the hotel you are eyeing. Read the online reviews and find out more information about the hotel. You will then know what to expect the day you booked your accommodation from how friendly the staffs are to whether the WiFi really works etc.

Choosing the right hotel shouldn't be a daunting task. Just ask what's important for you. Is is the location? Your budget? The facilities and amenities available? Or reviews from others? Or consider all of the above once your budget hotel selection process starts.

On Trips and Itineraries

Consider the fixed-cost trips you see mostly on your newsfeed if you want to travel on a budget. They are mostly inclusive of the transportation, accommodation, tours, meals and other costs you'll have if you do it your own. There are also resort packages being released and can be a good alternative for you not to think too much on where to stay and what to do during your vacation. Group Tours are highly considerable since I've mentioned in my Ultimate Guide to Caramoan Island Hopping that the more person you are on a trip the less costly it can be.

On Online and Offline Communication

Thanks to technology, staying in touch to your loved ones is now cheaper and easier. Big telecomm industries offer a huge promos that have call, text and surf functionality. Hotels, hostels, villa etc. have WiFi available in rooms and/or common areas. Most places and restaurants you go to provides free internet access as long as you become a customer.

On Preserving the Memories

I found that the best and the cheapest way of preserving the memories of your trip is to keep a journal or in my case a blog. It is so satisfying to keep a diary, take photos and recap what happened during the day or night. You can always go back to your entries and reminisce your memorable events and special moments for free.

Other Money Saving Tips and Tricks when you Travel

Weekday flights are much cheaper compared to weekends. It is also better to travel off-season if you want to spend less money on air tickets.
Check out hotel accommodations and book in advance before going to your destination. This will give you an ample time of preparing your itinerary and budget.
Try backpacking inns, hostels, homestays etc. to save money on your accommodation. These type of stay are cheaper compared to hotels plus you can get a chance to really feel the ambiance of the city.
Eat like a local. Avoid dining on fast food chains and restaurants. Taste new dishes that locals eat for they are tastier and way cheaper.
Create a Budget. I have taught you how to establish a budget for beginners right? Now it is time to create one and follow one accordingly. During my Tagaytay trip I was able to keep track of all our expenses thanks to keeping a budget from day zero to the last day of our journey.

What to Expect on Your Stay at Al Del Rio Villa Resort

Al Del Rio Villa Resort have this legit home-stay accommodation. By the entrance is the dining area which serves also as a common area you can do mini activities as a group. They have karaoke if you want to have a little happy hour before bidding the day goodbye. They offer unlimited coffee which is a plus for a caffeine-addict like me. Their kitchen will give you the province-feel which is nice for someone who grew up in Manila like me.

First breakfast after 10-12 Hour trip from Manila to Caramoan

There are a lot of places you can seat down, relax and mingle with each other. As my first home-stay experience, Al Del Rio Villa Resort, sets the bar high in my opinion. I love that you don't feel intimidated by the aura of the house, the people are all accommodating and hospitable plus everything is prepared before hand without you raising.

Al Del Rio Villa Resort is perfect for families and group. Their Barkada room, where me and the girls stayed, has six beds wide enough to accommodate two persons. Other rooms have double-deck perfect for smaller group or family. Each room has a bathroom which I know is one of the first a traveler must look for in a villa.

Unlimited Coffee for everyone

Included in our Al Del Rio stay is the food. I deeply appreciate the meals we had during the whole Caramoan Trip. I believe this is one big advantage of choosing a homestay rather than a hotel, you get to eat a lot of the local's finest. We had scrambled egg, spiced chicken longganisa, friend talong, tuyo for breakfast. Our lunch was spent in an island Matukad for Day 1 and Malawi Floating Cottage on the Day 2.

And I won't forget how the lunch match the beach adventure we were having. We had Ginataan Kamansi with Alimasag plus Fried Sal-igan Fish on Day 1 while Inihaw na Pusit and Laing (the best!!!) were our sumptuous meal on Day 2. Dinner is where all the special were served from Tinolang Manok, Sauteed Alimasag, Okra with Bagoong and Suha/Langka on Dessert for Day 1 and Bicol Express (Another the best!!!), Sweet and soured lapu-lapu and Corn Soup with Abalone and Shrimp on Day 2.

Two minutes away is the 100-year old tree that tourist also love to stop over and have a look. And did I mention Al Del Rio have a Tree House?? Make sure to book the Tree House if ever.
