I can't believe it's a year to the day since I launched &lt;a href="http://SavvyAuntie.com"&gt;SavvyAuntie.com&lt;/a&gt;. It's been the most fabulous and most rewarding year of my life. I am humbled by the response and proud of the success. And I am so very happy that aunts and godmothers are getting the recognition they deserve. What an amazing tribute to them!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of the most valuable things I have learned this past year is how good-natured and generous people are. Kara has been watching the launch and journey of SavvyAuntie.com because &lt;a href="http://dell.com/"&gt;DELL&lt;/a&gt; is interested in women in small business and how DELL can help them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;DELL sent me this laptop and monitor (as well as some necessary&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt; accessories) to help me run my business more effectively. I won't be reviewing the products - I'm not a reviewer - but I am acknowledging that DELL is supportive of women in small business and we both hope to take this relationship further as my business grows. It was on June 12, 2007 that I decided to start the company of my dreams. I didn't know it then, but it was the happiest day of my life.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;I have learned so much as an entrepreneur over the last two years - the first year spent developing the brand and SavvyAuntie.com, and the second year seeing the brand and website launch and grow. Savvy Auntie is a multi-platform media company. You've only see the tip of the iceberg....&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;I thought this milestone was a good time to reflect on a few of the things I've learned over the last two years. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" &gt;30 things I've learned as an Auntrepreneur:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;1) Believing in yourself in more important than having anyone else believe in you.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;2) Believing in yourself makes other people believe in you.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;3) Success is relative. It's important to relish each success. Then move on to a higher goal immediately thereafter.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;4) "You should..." is the hardest thing for me to hear. Not being able to meet others' expectations of me or my ability to engage their good, sometimes really great ideas, is something I am not yet comfortable with. I hear "you shoulds" just about every day. I should learn to let it go.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;5) I've learned that by sharing my journey, others are inspired. It's a pretty easy way to pay it forward.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;6) All the things I enjoyed doing as a kid are skills I bring to the task now. I loved theatre, for example, which helps me feel comfortable on stage.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;7) Respect is something you earn...not once, but every single day. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;8) When colleagues in various stages of my career said to me: "You are meant for bigger things," they were right. I'm just now understanding what they meant.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;9) I've learned that I'm talented at things I never knew I was talented at. Entrepreneurship is bringing  out the best in me and I'm so loving what I am learning about myself.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;10) I've learned that curiosity is one of the most valuable assets I have, so I've learned to be more curious, more open and more accessible to diverse ideas and new people.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;11) I've learned that I don't have time for a hobby. And I'm ok with that.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;12) I've learned that I don't work really hard because I love what I do. I work really hard because that's what it takes. Loving it is the reward.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;13) I've learned that a 5 year old can be proud of her Auntie&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;14) I've learned that friends are very supportive and embracing of my entrepreneurship. And thanks to Facebook, they know I haven't fallen off the face of the earth.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;15) I've learned that I don't need a lot of clothes and shoes after all.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;16) I've learned that making really smart business decisions feels really good.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;17) I've learned that every problem has a solution if you really, truly believe it does.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;18) I've learned that as much as you may inspire a stranger, their telling you that can be incredibly empowering.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;19) Happiness is a decision I make every day. The days I forget to do that, I'm not happy.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;20) Some people really do hang on to every word I say. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;21) What I don't know, someone else does. They also know the stuff I didn't know to ask them about.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;22) I've learned that people are incredibly generous with kindness. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;23) I've learned that I can do just about anything I set my mind to do.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;24) I've taught myself how to accept imperfection.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;25) I've learned that it's not what you know. It's not who you know. It's you. It's 100% you. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;26) Goals are limiting, if you think about it.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;27) You don't become an overnight success overnight. I studied entrepreneurship, branding, marketing, business management and self-motivation for almost 20 years (on my own - outside of school and work) before I started my company. I just needed the right idea to become an entrepreneur. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;28) No one has asked me what school I went to or what my GPA was. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;29) Every single day is valuable and gets my company one or multiple steps further along it's way. It sounds trite, but I now have 730 days to prove it.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;30) I take my company personally. I just can't believe that it's not even a full year since the launch of the site!  The support and encouragement from aunts, the press and sponsors has been incredible.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Speaking of sponsors, I am proud to announce the newest sponsor for the Savvy Auntie brand. Hanadarko (Hunter) as she investigates brutal crimes while trying to balance her relationship with her partner, Ham (Johnson). Grace also must figure out cryptic messages from her last-chance angel, Earl (Rippy). At the end of the second season, death row inmate Leon Cooley, who shared visions of Earl with Grace, was executed, leaving a hole in Grace’s life. Soon, she began having dreams of a young drug addict named Neely (King), which lead Grace to believe Neely also shares a connection with Earl.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Meanwhile, Ham’s divorce was finalized. We had previously met on&lt;a href="http://twitter.com/savvyauntie"&gt; &lt;/a&gt;&lt;a href="http://twitter.com/savvyauntie"&gt;Twitter.com&lt;/a&gt;, and I was glad to put a face to the Tweet!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;We were talking about the ebbs and flows of being a start up (Lauren's company helps start ups find interns and assistants who are willing to work for little or no pay in return for a great resume building experience) when she said something that I've never been able to articulate myself.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Lauren was asking me about recommendations for a vendor. When I made mention of one, she asked: "Are the a "Yes And" team or a "No But" team? I can't deal anymore with vendors who say no and don't help me solve my problem. I need vendors who say "Yes -AND we can also help even more!"&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;AHA! I know that feeling. It's that feeling you get when you pitch a vendor a problem that needs solving, and they throw back a curve-ball: "No. No we can't do that. No we can't solve that problem." Entrepreneurs like Lauren and I also read that as: "No and you're wasting my time...go solve it yourself."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Pain points are dealt with daily as an entrepreneur. Once we decide to start our own businesses, we know what we know, and we look to others to help us with the stuff we don't know. When we're good entrepreneurs, nothing gets us feeling stuck. We're about moving forward, not about standing still.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Entrepreneurs know that there's a solution for just about everything. And we need vendors who get that. We need vendors who go out of their way to help. We need vendors who are as passionate about building spectacular results as we are.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;If we know you are going to say no often when we ask the question, we'll stop asking. And that's not good for either businesses.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;I want to work with "Yes And" people, not "No But" people.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Yes I do. Direct mail</category><title>Dear Madison Avenue, Please Don't Wish Me a Happy Mother's Day</title><description>&lt;div class="post hentry"&gt; &lt;a name="3021842161708535608"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;   &lt;div class="post-body entry-content"&gt; &lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dear Readers,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Last May, before I launched SavvyAuntie.com, I wrote a &lt;a href="http://blog.savvyauntie.com/2008/05/dear-madison-avenue-please-dont-wish-me.html"&gt;blog post&lt;/a&gt; about childless women and Mother's Day. It's been one of my most popular posts to-date and so I thought this year, I would simply update the data and re-post. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;(First published on May 2, 2008. Data has been updated for 2009)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;Dear Madison Avenue,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Please don't wish me a Happy Mother's Day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's not that I don't appreciate the wishes. And I don't mean to be the "Ebenezer Scrooge" of Mother's Day. It's a perfectly lovely holiday.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But I am not a mother.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And it's not that I don't want to be. I personally do. But for now, I am not a mother.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So when I walk into your store, or open your e-newsletter, or receive your direct mail, please don't wish me a Happy Mother's Day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don't get me wrong. I love mothers. I admire the work and energy it takes to be a mother.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt; In fact, some of my best friends are mothers. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt; But some are not. In fact, some of your girlfriends are probably not mothers either. Stop. Look around. Chances are about 50% of the women you know are not mothers. Especially since you live in a big city like New York.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Madison, or Ms Avenue if you prefer, just look at the US census report on fertility. In 2006 (the latest report) 45.1% of women up to the age of 44 were counted as "childless." (The number of women over the age of 44 who are non-moms is not recorded.) That's up from 44.6% in 2004. And 43% in 2001. So the numbers are growing. Year after year. After year.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For every Mom out there, there is a Non-Mom. Some by choice. Some yet to be. Some who just can't. None of these women want your Happy Mother's Day wishes. In fact, you are probably hurting some feelings along the way.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But Madison, you're a smart marketer. You can step away from the decades-old idea that moms are the most powerful spenders in the US. Perhaps at education and kids' necessities like diapers and milk they are. Sure. But women in general are the most lucrative consumers for marketers. And we've come a long way, baby. 85% of women make or influence the purchasing decisions in their household. The household, by the way, may be a family of four, or a single abode for one. For the first time, more women than men are buying cars, consumer electronics, homes and doing home renovations. And you might be surprised to hear that 50% of single women own their own homes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Since the 1960's, when women were finally opening bank accounts in their own names, you have been focusing your marketing strategies on Mom since that is how you have traditionally identified "Woman." But it's 2009 and times have changed. Today, non-moms actually have greater purchasing power because they are not supporting children, because a greater portion of non-moms than moms are still in the workforce, and because they have more time for leisure and travel.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Which doesn't mean that non-moms don't love children. Non-moms have nieces and nephews, by relation or by choice, and other children in their lives that they love and embrace (and spoil!).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Madison, since you are a woman who works in advertising and marketing, you may have heard that I call this segment of women: PANKs (Professional Aunts, No Kids.) PANK is the New PINK. We are the fastest growing segment of affluent women in America - the women you should be focusing some really smart attention on.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;So don't turn us off. Don't keep assuming all women are moms. Do better targeting and segmenting. Find the women who spend their discretionary income and time on the kids in their lives - and on themselves. We're here. We're listening. And we're ready to buy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;In the meantime, go ahead with your Mother's Day plans. Now, being a New Yorker, I rarely mention celebrity spottings  because, well, it's just not a New York thing to do. But I have been pretty vocal about  the fact that I met Jimmy Fallon by posting it on Twitter and Facebook.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;So why is Jimmy so special? Well it's because in a way, he's not. I mean he's special. If you meet him, you'll see he's a truly special guy. He's authentic. He's genuine. He's nice...really talented, smart and truly funny.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;The reason why I've been less than 'New York' about my meeting Jimmy is because he's become a buddy. Not a "hey can you come over and help me move?" buddy. Not even a "Margaritas tonight? Meet me us at 9" kind of buddy. More like a Social Media Buddy.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Jimmy's my buddy on Twitter. Which is more meaningful, frankly, than him being my friend on Facebook.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;For a few months, Jimmy's been following me on Twitter, and I've been following him.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In March, Jimmy showed my Tweets on his blackberry on The Today Show. When I Direct Messaged him a "Thank You! Even my stepmom called me Florida to say she saw it," he replied "Awesome!"&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;It &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;was&lt;/span&gt; kinda awesome, Jimmy.&lt;/span&gt;  &lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then my friends from &lt;a href="http://mashable.com/"&gt;Mashable.com&lt;/a&gt; told me they got tickets to see &lt;a href="http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/"&gt;Late Night With Jimmy Fallon&lt;/a&gt; and asked me to come along. When I told Jimmy I was coming to the show, he immediately connected me with his team so that I could meet him afterwards. (The team was great, by the way!)&lt;/span&gt;  &lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And that's when we met. We shook hands at first. Then a few minutes later, Jimmy hugged me and said... "I feel like we've known each other - like we're buddies!" &lt;/span&gt;  &lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;He was right. At that moment, I forgot I was hugging the host of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Or the star of Fever Pitch with Drew Barrymore. Or the anchor for Weekend Update on SNL. In that moment, he was the guy I Tweet and DM who I finally met In Real Life. It felt like it does whenever you meet a Social Media Buddy in real life. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have a lot of respect for Jimmy. He's using social media not only strategically, but authentically. There's no way he can become 'buddies' with 800,000 Followers. But with the people he connects with, he really connects.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have no idea why Jimmy follows me on Twitter. I'm not even sure Jimmy knows anymore. But I'm glad he does.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Because Jimmy Fallon's a really special guy. is the agency I chose to develop &lt;a href="http://savvyauntie.com/"&gt;SavvyAuntie.com&lt;/a&gt; and the branding, including the logo. It was a stunningly beautiful day in New York City, just on the cusp of fall, and I remember clearly the walk from the Canal Street exit on the 1 train to 12 Vestry Street in Tribeca that afternoon...&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;The decision to work with Syrup was an easy decision in some ways, difficult in others. It took exactly 2 months from &lt;a href="http://blog.savvyauntie.com/2008/04/welcome-to-my-magic-carpet-ride.html"&gt;the day I decided to be an auntrepreneur&lt;/a&gt; to this day, the kick-off meeting with the creative team. Looking back, perhaps two months is not a long time considering I had only thought of the idea weeks before. But those two months were full of decisions and indecisions. Working with an agency like Syrup meant a big investment. Were there more economical ways of achieving what I envisioned?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;I looked...I spoke with a few smaller agencies. And I spoke with some freelancers who do great work. But none had all the skills I needed to develop SavvyAuntie.com. It took me about a month to realize if I was going to do this, it had to be done right. There's much more to the development of a website than design. Or programming. There's the user-interface. There's architecture. There's functionality. There's usability. And it all has to embody a brand experience that is meaningful, unique and unforgettable. &lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I finally came to the right decision to engage a full-on creative agency, there was only one agency I wanted to work with: Syrup.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I had a wonderful history with Syrup. When I worked at L'Oreal USA corporate, responsible for the company's internal and interactive communications, I agreed to meet with Syrup after a cold-call to my office. They showed me their work and I was immediately impressed. I hired them to redesign L'OrealUSA.com back in 2005. The new site was nominated for a &lt;a href="http://www.webbyawards.com/webbys/current.php?season=10#webby_entry_beauty"&gt;Webby Award for Best Beauty Site&lt;/a&gt;.  Because it was a corporate website, not a consumer website, it was especially exciting to be nominated in that category.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Syrup also works with GE, Hearst, Nike, Coty, and many fashion brands. I knew that if I wanted a destination for PANKs (Professional Aunts No Kids), that talked to them without talking down to them, I need to work with an agency that understood women.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I needed to work with Syrup.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So I called Rob Holzer, the CEO - and a friend - to ask him to work with me. Of course this was in the summer of 2007 when digital agencies were so busy, they could hardly keep up with the work they had. And that's exactly what Rob told me when he turned me down.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So I called again. Rob and Jakob, his business partner and Chief Creative Officer, were on their way to a summer retreat for the weekend. I was on the deck of a friend's house in San Francisco, pleading my case. I needed to work with Syrup.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And they finally agreed. They love me and they loved my idea. They would make it work. And boy did they make it work.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So on September 12th, 2007, as I walked across Canal Street, ready to kick-off the work for SavvyAuntie.com, champagne bottle in hand, I was confident I was making the right decision. The incredibly talented team at Syrup would help make Savvy Auntie the premier destination for aunts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And it is.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In that meeting, I told Jakob and his team that I wanted to win a Webby Award for best Family site for SavvyAuntie.com. It had to be &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;that&lt;/span&gt; good.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And it is.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I found out earlier this week that &lt;a href="http://www.webbyawards.com/webbys/current.php?season=13#webby_entry_family"&gt;SavvyAuntie.com and Syrup are nominated for a Webby Award for Best Family/Parenting Website&lt;/a&gt;. The other nominees include Disney's Family.com, WebMD.com/Parenting and Kaboose.com. Just to be nominated among them is no small feat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The nomination means that SavvyAuntie.com is among the best of the best. And there were tens of thousands of entries for the Webby Awards this year.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'd like to say thank you to Rob, Jakob, Omino, Dana, Paul, Joerg and everyone on the team that made this happen. And since the nomination is also based on content, I'd like to thank all the Savvy Experts and guest Experts who have contributed. A&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;nd more &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;than ever, I've been receiving emails, Twitter direct messages, Facebook messages, texts and IMs from friends and acquaintances, friends of friends, friends of acquaintances, some virtual and some IRL, all asking me how I "did it."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Naturally, it's a challenge for me to respond to everyone the way I'd like to - which is to give them my undivided attention and support - but I just can't. It's becoming more than I can handle. So I thought I would just simply put my secret recipe here. Of course, as with every recipe, the final outcome is in the hands of the chef. Nevertheless, this is my three-pronged approach for success:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" &gt;Strong Product. Powerful Niche. Social Influence.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;As you know from my story, I invested my life savings into SavvyAuntie.com - the product. All of our constituents (consumers, advertisers, media, etc) are human, and they all either 'get it' immediately, or they don't. I believe you only have one chance to make a good first impression.  Don't blow it with a product that's not great. You may never get a second chance.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;It worked for me. Twenty-three minutes after I launched, I received an email from the digital media buyers for Hasbro. They wanted in. An hour later, Sephora contacted me. And so on. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;So product, product product. &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;It can't be good. It's got to be great.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;There's no point to a great product, if no one wants to experience it. You need a powerful niche. PANKs - Professional Aunts No Kids - is a segment I carved out of the population of American women that I feel are under-served, untapped, and incredibly powerful. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" &gt;Know who you are talking to, or they won't listen.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Finally, there's social influence. I realized shortly after I launched that people were interested in my voice and any value I might be able to add. With close to 8000 Followers on Twitter, a regular 'gig' on Fox News, representing brands online and on TV, and introducing &lt;a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/03/24/what-would-pinocchio-tweet/"&gt;sponsored conversations &lt;/a&gt;people enjoy being a part of, my influence is a great asset to my company.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;By the way, social influence was never a part of my original plan. The social media platforms that have really become invaluable to me (Twitter, Facebook, this Blog), enabled me to realize my passion for connecting with people and being part of online communities, was something that could actually help grow my brand reach. Timing is everything. I started my company as these tools we taking off. It's not too late for you. But go build your voice online. Add value. Create influence.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;My advice to anyone thinking about starting a company: Make sure you invest in the development and design of your product, identify a niche that people "get" and use your own social influence to leverage greater reach.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Of course, none of this works without a lot of hard work and determination. So be prepared to work harder than you have ever worked in your life. My Twitter ID is SavvyAuntie, but my avatar is a photo of me (taken by the acclaimed fashion photographer, Chiun-Kai Shih!)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My response is that I am my brand. And since I am a 'family' brand, I don't curse, get negative or political. "You never know when Disney(C) may want to advertise," I say.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Well guess what? Disney approached me to advertise! Specifically, it's Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment (WDSHE) that approached me for a very interesting opportunity. It's new, modern and part of the innovative digital marketing approach called: Conversational Marketing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Specifically, WDSHE has asked me to help them promote the premier of the &lt;a href="http://clk.atdmt.com/AVE/go/130422134/direct;wi.;hi./01/"&gt;70th Anniversary Platinum Edition of Walt Disney's(C) Pinocchio on Blu-ray and DVD&lt;/a&gt; on Twitter. Yes. Twitter.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first thing I told them was that I would be writing this blog post and tweeting it several times to let my Followers know that I would be working on this pilot project with them. (I am the first and only one they have approached to do this). They agreed. I also told them that everything that I tweeted out would be authentic, transparent and honest. They agreed. Finally, I told them that it had to be conversational and seamless with regard to how I always connect on Twitter. They agreed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What's interesting about this campaign, which also includes run-of-site display ads on SavvyAuntie.com, is that it's positive reinforcement that those who are engaging, give support, share great content, add value, and connect in the conversation, can be rewarded with becoming an emissary for a brand like Disney.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I did my due diligence. I consulted with some of the people I respect the most in social media to get their opinions. I studied the launch of the Pinocchio 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition Blu-ray and DVD and feel strongly that it suits the Savvy Auntie brand. Pinocchio is a classic tale of following your dreams, bravery, loyalty and honesty. These are wonderful virtues we all want to help instill in our nieces, nephews, sons and daughters.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Having Disney as a sponsor is honestly a wish come true. I am proud that they have selected me as the one to work on this pilot project with them. We all agree that if this works, it's good news for everyone involved. Those who are interested in adding the 70th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray and DVD to their collection of Disney Movie Classics will have been notified. Those who might be able to learn how to leverage social media for sponsorship will have a good case study to watch. And Disney will hopefully be happy too.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So here's the plan. Every time I tweet a 'sponsored' tweet from Disney, I will use #SADisney (SA standing for Savvy Auntie).&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt; [UPDATE: I have now changed this to #DisneySA as a reader pointed out before it read: SAD-isney! Not a good idea.]&lt;/span&gt; That way, you'll know it. I won't do that when I am back-and-forth in conversation with people about it every time, as that might become cumbersome for everyone. This is the annual event where toy manufacturers, big and small, gather to showcase their upcoming toys for the year. It's really exciting to be in on the action and I will be filming our favorites (and perhaps a few strange things we find) along the way.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;What am I filming for? Well, I am excited to announce that we will soon be launching Savvy Auntie TV. Online video is becoming more and more important in digital media. If it's good, it can be incredibly viral - which means people will share it often. It's like having SavvyAuntie.com on wheels! &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;I'll post more on Savvy Auntie TV soon, but rest assured it will be along the sophisticated lines of the Savvy Auntie brand. It's professionally produced and I have to say, looking good. I'm thrilled! In the spirit of the blog where I try to be as transparent as I can be, here are the 25 Random Things about me that I just posted on Facebook:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;1. I'm turning 40 on March 15th and I'm not unhappy about it. If this is what 40 looks like, bring it on, baby!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;2. I did kindergarten twice because of some mix up moving from one school to another.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;3. My middle name is Rose.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;4. My Jewish name is Shoshanna.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;5. When I was 8, I imagined having a set of twin daughters and planned to name them Bonnie and Buffy. I have two sets of twin nieces, none of which are named Bonnie or Buffy, thankfully.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;6. My mom died 20 years ago, almost to the day.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;7. I've been imagining starting my own company for 15 years and have been reading books and magazines on entrepreneurship, marketing, business and leadership every since.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;8. My older brother was always smarter than me.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;9. I went to McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where I am from.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;10. I don't really know 70% of my "Friends" on Facebook but appreciate their reaching out.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;11. I don't eat pork, bacon, shellfish, cheeseburgers and never have.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;12. I used to be in musical plays as a teen and loved it. Studied theatre at college (Marionopolis in Montreal).&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;13. This is my real hair color.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;14. I've never had a 'long-term relationship' and am really, truly fine with it.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;15. Three years ago, I woke up numb on one side of my body. Turns out I have MS but that was the worst of it. I feel great and the disease rarely affects me. Thank God.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;16. I have become slightly addicted to coffee. And my iphone. And yes, Twitter.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;17. I am happy 94% of the time. The other 6% of the time I am not remembering how fortunate I am.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;18. I believe in karma. And God.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;19. More than married, I wish I were in love. And he in love with me.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;20. I am so happy I didn't marry the boys I 'loved' 10-25 years ago.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;21. I would be an amazing, amazing mom.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;22. When I think about how much I love my nephew and nieces, I cry.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;23. I am ashamed of how little I have traveled.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;24. I don't have an MBA and am happy I didn't spend the money to get one.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;25. The Shorty Awards award those voted on by people on Twitter as the best short form communicators in their category. For those who don't know, &lt;a href="http://twitter.com/"&gt;Twitter&lt;/a&gt; is a social media platform that enables people and companies to communicate in 140 characters or less. I cannot say enough about how Twitter has enabled me to develop groundswell support for my company and gauge how my brand is affecting those around the country and the world. (Twitter has also enabled me to connect with my business heroes, advisors, Savvy Auntie Experts and much, much more. But more about that in another post.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I didn't really pay too much attention to the Shorty Awards but appreciated all the nominations I was getting by my Followers on Twitter in the brand category. But things changed last week when I was notified by the people at the Shorty Awards that I was a finalist in the category and that there would be an &lt;a href="http://shortyawards.com/awards-ceremony/"&gt;awards ceremony in New York City on February 11&lt;/a&gt; and..... and my ego kicked in.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All of a sudden I wanted to "win." Even though I am not sure I should win. After all, I think &lt;a href="http://twitter.com/zappos"&gt;Tony Hsieh&lt;/a&gt;, the CEO of &lt;a href="http://zappos.com/"&gt;Zappos&lt;/a&gt;, should win if we're going to be legitimate about who is the best brand communicator on Twitter. But &lt;a href="http://twitter.com/zappos"&gt;Twitter.com/zappos&lt;/a&gt; is not a finalist. &lt;a href="http://twitter.com/marvel"&gt;Marvel&lt;/a&gt; is a finalist and so truly they should win. But they are not currently winning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Over the last few days since the finalists were notified, &lt;a href="http://www.blogger.com/Twitter.com/SavvyAuntie"&gt;Twitter.com/SavvyAuntie&lt;/a&gt; has been neck-and-neck with &lt;a href="http://twitter.com/MarthaVan"&gt;Twitter.com/MarthaVan&lt;/a&gt;.  Heard of her? I hadn't. Her profile says she's the &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;"Creator of Action Wipes. Gr8 after a ride, hike, climb, camping, Burning Man, Coachella and more. “Your face is not a baby’s butt. Don’t wipe it like one”." &lt;/span&gt;And I started to think that "Martha Van" isn't a brand. It's a person. "Action Wipes" are the brand. And so I started to ask people to vote for me because "Savvy Auntie" is a brand. I even sent Direct Messages (private Twitter messages) to Twitter friends asking them to vote for me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And the whole time I felt like an idiot. After all, the winner, in my honest opinion, should be Zappos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And then I really felt like an idiot when I received a note from the people at the Shorty Awards that the price for the awards ceremony would be $60 (free for me as a finalist). So if I did win this thing, I would have to then go back to the same people from whom I asked for a "vote" and ask them to shell out $60 to attend.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This has gotten way out of hand.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am really honored (I am serious here) to have been nominated. When people nominate and the vote for you for the Shorty Awards, they have to say why they are voting. And frankly, I was so touched by so many of the things that people wrote about me and my brand.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And that's more than enough for me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am spending way too much energy exercising my ego in the Shorty Awards. Do I really need to win this to be proud of the fact that in six months Savvy Auntie has the recognition and buzz that it does? No. It's silly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While it's not fair to pull of out the race because it wasn't my decision to be a finalist (it was the voters' democratic decision), I am no longer asking people to vote for me, checking my stats or frankly, caring. Those who have voted for me, I have thanked. If I haven't thanked you yet, it's coming. Because that's the "win" here. The win is having people who care enough to &lt;a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=savvyauntie+shorty+awards"&gt;recognize me&lt;/a&gt; and my efforts...and a way for me to say thank you. It's a profit making and/or traffic driving endeavor that plays on the egos of small (and large) businesses like mine. It's not a fair awards ranking program. It's a popularity contest and the nominee with the most energy to aggregate votes, wins. Basically, they aren't fair in a number of ways.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The award I really want to win will coming up in a couple of months. It's the &lt;a href="http://www.webbyawards.com/"&gt;Webby Awards&lt;/a&gt;. I have no idea if &lt;a href="http://www.savvyauntie.com/"&gt;Savvy Auntie&lt;/a&gt; is even a finalist yet. But I want that award because it will recognize the team from &lt;a href="http://www.syrupnyc.com/"&gt;Syrup&lt;/a&gt; that worked so hard and so professionally with me to develop the brand design, website design and strategy, and much more. Plus, it's decided on by experts in the digital media field and not a popularity contest....other than the People's Voice part of the awards program...which is already giving me agita and I haven't even been nominated yet.  The primary part of the Webby Awards is about the work that my team did and that is completely legitimate and I honor the opportunity for them to be recognized.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Here's more on the Webby Awards: &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet. But I am sick about how it feeds my ego, making me feel like I am part of a high school popularity contest, and so I won't do it anymore. A couple of Fancy Nancys, an Elmo, a Tumbles, a cow and a moose (they're a couple) and some night vision goggles. They're not mine. Well, they're mine but I don't really play with them. Other than the Elmo and the Tumbles on rare occasion.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These toys came my way via various PR and brand managers who sent them upon request. Most of these toys appeared with me on a TV or web show. Some, like cow and moose, just found their way to me somehow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The amazing thing about all this is that a year ago, I didn't know much about toys. Now, I have become an official toy expert. Not only am I a contributing editor for Toy Wishes Magazine, but I often appear on TV or online talking about the hottest toys for nieces and nephews of all ages. And I feel confident I know my stuff. Or at least I try.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course, there's that incredible &lt;a href="http://beta.savvyauntie.com/GiftSearch1.aspx"&gt;Gifts&lt;/a&gt; section on &lt;a href="http://www.savvyauntie.com/"&gt;SavvyAuntie.com&lt;/a&gt; that lists the best toys we've seen this year. Yes, it's nearing 2009 and we're already scouting for the best of the new year. And by we I mean me. Because I'm still a one-woman show. (Although after the new year, I am welcoming &lt;a href="http://twitter.com/savvychrista"&gt;@savvychrista&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://twitter.com/savvydebi"&gt;@savvydebi&lt;/a&gt; as part-time interns and they are going to be a tremendous help!)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My point about my becoming a toy expert in less than a year is that if you set your mind out to do something, to be something, and if you work hard enough, you might just be able to achieve it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I learned that when I began working at L'Oreal in 2002. The beauty industry is pretty incestuous. When I thought about getting into the industry just a few years before I landed the job at L'Oreal, a woman who had been in the industry forever told me that if you weren't 'born' into the beauty industry, it was almost impossible to get in. Beauty execs move from one company to another, or are lifers at their first. Rarely do people enter the industry after entry-level.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But I got in at a senior level.... and knew little about cosmetics other than my own passion for them. But I learned. I studied. I inquired. I went to makeup counters and watched. I read research data. I scanned the internet for cosmetics news. I dove right in. And became a beauty expert.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The toy industry reminds me a little of the beauty industry. There are a few independent brands with some winning products, but mostly there are just a few larger companies that own a significant number of toy brands - just like in the beauty industry. And just like the beauty industry, it's tough to get into the toy industry if you weren't born into it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Both industries thrive on innovation - but true innovation is rare and fleeting. A truly innovative product has never been done before, and it often takes either a small, nimble company, or a rich mega-company, to produce and launch it.  And as technology gets easier to replicate, an innovative product doesn't own a category for too long before a copy-cat comes along to steal part if its thunder.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, technologies are often replicated between brands of a larger company. Just like you'll find similar technologies in mascaras across mass and prestige makeup brands, you'll notice similar technologies sweep across toy brands. For example, this year it was hard to find a toy that wasn't motorized in one way or another.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Elmo Live! by Fisher Price is the latest incarnation of our ticklish furry friend, and is really life-like. Or toddler monster-like. While a few steps above the original Tickle-Me Elmo, Elmo Live! is still a motorized plush.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Playskool, a division of Hasbro, and a wonderful Savvy Auntie sponsor, launched Kota the Triceratops, the motorized dino that little kids just love. And Playskool's Tumbles, Biscuit and Butterscotch were also favorites of kids for whom the basic plush is no longer the only option. And Tonka, another brand associated with Hasbro, has a real winner with the Tonka Bounce Back Racer which sold out quickly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt; Non-tech toys also made it big this year. Bakugan, a trading card/marbles/action figure game based on the anime series of the same name, caused quite a stir among school-aged boys. And the hackysack-like&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt; Myachi, took ten years to become and over-night success.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Alex Toys, a leading crafts brand, launched it's Alex Jr baby plush baby products and I instantly fell in love with the gorgeous colors and designs. Somewhere between pastels and prime colors, the toys are really a delight to look at.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course, there are smaller, independant companies that I see a lot of promise for as well. Tedde - the 'un-mass' produced teddy bear company, really has an opportunity to reach an audience that is looking for a different toy to give a unique child.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, companies are making great strides in developing toys specifically for Special Needs kids, or realizing that their traditional products are developmental for those kids as well.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am eager to see what 2009 will bring for toy innovation and how the economy will shape the industry. What will be this year's Webkindz, Guitar Hero or Wii Fit? Will technology play an even greater role, or will consumers lean toward basic toys as the economy brings them back to basics at home?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'll be attending the Toy Fair in New York in February and will have a better idea then. The show is online-only at &lt;a href="http://foxnews.com/strategyroom"&gt;FoxNews.com/strategyroom&lt;/a&gt; daily from 9-6PM EST. I have been on the Lite Lunch nel from noon-1PM. It's kind of like The View, but we're nicer to each other. Really.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What's great about this show is that while I appear as Founder of Savvy Auntie - and often get to tell the viewers what it's all about - it's frankly just a wonderful experience learning how these segments function. We talk about pop-culture stuff - like celebrities we love to hate (I chose the entire cast of The Hills) and famous autographs we cherish (Jaclyn Smith from Charlie's Angels - which spurred a whole Charlie's angel spoof for about 15 seconds of air time). I love the banter and energy in the room. Plus - I'm meeting fantastic people which is one of the best parts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And the best part of all? Realizing that all this exposure is coming just 5 months after the launch of SavvyAuntie.com. It truly humbles me that so quickly after introducing the Savvy Auntie brand to the world, that I create enough interest in my persona to be asked to repeatedly appear on this show. And on The 10! Show on NBC. And more to come...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Savvy Auntie brand will grow into books, video and other media extentions. In the meantime, I am having the time of my life. I wonder what took me so long to take life into my own hands?! And I don't have a PR agency supporting my PR efforts, so I am very fortunate. Some have asked how I am doing it. Well, it's good to have a strong product, and a season twist (gift giving) as well as a first break on TV.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;I had a PR agency helping me launch the site back in July, and they did land me a few great 'gigs,' like my initial NBC's The 10! Show and a Better.TV appearance that I recorded last week (and will appear on 12.23.08).  I've managed to "up-sell" the NBC 10! Show (local 11AM show in Philadelphia) a few times and have done several Gift segments there, which are fantastic (although a bit of a schlep from NYC).&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;The first 10! Show appearance helped get me a great opportunity to be a Contributing Editor to &lt;a href="http://www.toywishes.com/"&gt;Toy Wishes&lt;/a&gt; Magazine. This wonderful role has enabled me to have air time on WCBS in NYC and on Fox New Strategy Room just last week (a streaming online news show) and there may be more appearances before the end of the year! Thanks again, Gareb!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Of all my appearances, the Fox News Strategy Room was perhaps the most fun. I didn't have to bring a series of toys and gifts to showcase... it was just me talking on panel with smart people. We talked about the Golden Globes, Jennifer Aniston's recent 'naked' photos in GQ and toys. It was so much fun! And the best part? They asked me back again right after the show! All very positive, supportive and helpful. So thank you. I've since gotten better educated, more interest from potential investors, and a greater sense of confidence around the whole milestone.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the meantime, I still struggle as a female entrepreneur in a male-analytical dominated world.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;My friend, &lt;a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/patricia-handschiegel"&gt;Patricia Handschiegel&lt;/a&gt;, a woman entrepreneur who never seems to sleep, is doing a series in the Huffington Post, where she is a regular contributor, on The New Power Girls. She recently asked me to weigh in on how "instinct" plays a role in my company. Naturally, there is often a difference between how men and women start and manage their entrepreneurial ventures. Women, by nature, are often more instinctual (and less analytical) than men.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And we live in a Man's business world.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's no surprise that the original computer spreadsheet, upon which the ubiquitous Microsoft Excel is based, &lt;a href="http://dssresources.com/history/sshistory.html"&gt;was developed by men&lt;/a&gt;. It's no surprise that the golf course is the cliche networking activity. Most CEOs are men. Most investors are men. Most people in technology - the industry in which my business is based - are men. There are fewer women entrepreneurs than men entrepreneurs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And that's because, in my humble opinion, the cost/benefit analysis of an entrepreneurial venture is often calculated within a spreadsheet. And most women don't live in spreadsheets.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Innovation was never born out of a spreadsheet. You simply can't calculate the risk of innovation because by definition, it's never been done before. So we look at market size, growth potential, and then throw in ebitdas and three ways to 'project' the future and take the one in the middle. And we expect major success based on calculated projections.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When looking at a valuation for my company, I asked a male friend helping me flesh some things out this (fair) question: "&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;How can I possibly responsibly project what will happen?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt; Aren't projections basically a guessing game?" Yes," he texted back immediately, "But no one can guess as well as you."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I don't like guessing. I like envisioning. I like setting tough goals and meeting them. For example, my plan was to look for a literary agent for my children's book two months after I launched SavvyAuntie.com. Thanks to &lt;a href="http://www.twitter.com/chriswebb"&gt;Chris Webb&lt;/a&gt;, a Twitter friend, I found my agents two weeks after I followed up on my plan.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I worked in the non-profit world 12 years ago, I planned to increase participation in a program that I believed - with a some major re-branding - could increase 1000x fold. Sure, I had a plan. And I set a budget. And I hired help. Still, no one believed we would make it. No one was as determined as I. But I had envisioned the success. For me it was no longer a business goal; it was reality. I don't shoot for the moon. I live on the moon and wait for everything to catch up. And we increased participation by 998%.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My boy-genius friend, &lt;a href="http://www.erickuhn.com/"&gt;Eric Kuhn&lt;/a&gt;, said recently: "I start at the top and work my way up." That's why he's a genius.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The truth is, business plans worry me. Not a day goes by that something doesn't change everything. Some of those things I control. Some I don't.  What never waivers is the end-goal. Not matter how rocky the waters - I know what I am sailing towards.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But I know that I can't fight it. As a business owner seeking investor support, I need to speak in analytics. My new and incredibly helpful friend, &lt;a href="http://www.creativecommerce.com/Pages/TeamPage.aspx"&gt;Rich Caccappolo&lt;/a&gt;, sent me the "10 Slides every entrepreneur should have." I am going to do that now.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the end, I live in Man's world. But that's okay because there are lots of Power Girls shooting for the moon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;See you there, girls. And yes, there will be martinis.
