The Farm Stool

I wanted to share how I painted the stool in the powder room. I purchased this stool last year at a flea market for eight dollars. It was just stained wood and covered in scratches. I knew I could improve it.

This is what it looked like after the first paint treatment I gave it. I used ASCP in Old Violet on the legs and Old White on the seat. Lots of distressing and it was waxed.

I thought I would add more color to it to work in the new powder room design. I had these two samples on hand and was dying to use these colors.

These are very bright colors right out of the jar. These are Antibes green and Arles.

All I did was brush the Antibes green on all over the stool.

After the green was dry I then just brushed the Arles (yellow) on in different spots here and there. I wanted to create the look of many layers of old paint showing after years of wear and several times of being painted another color.

Then I sanded it heavily in different places that I felt would have worn off over time.

Here you can see the Old Violet and the original wood showing.

The most common spot to get worn are the rungs where most people put their shoes on when sitting on a stool so they were distressed heavier especially the bottom rungs.

After all the sanding I then waxed it with clear and dark waxes and buffed when dry.

Now the stool has the worn farm style look and is serving as a table in its new life.

I have certainly been in nesting overdrive this month. I will probably crash soon. I haven't shown y'all a new rug I purchased for the sitting room in December. The old sisal rug that was in there was a temporary fix until I found the perfect one. The sisal was previously in the dining room and was covered in stains that were hidden pretty well under the furniture in the sitting room when I moved it in there.

I was looking at overstock.com at rugs and came across one with all the colors I was looking for. I was skeptical about ordering it because sometimes the color shows differently on the monitor than it actually is, but this rug had a lot of good reviews. I have bought most of my rugs from overstock. You can't beat having a huge heavy rug shipped for under three dollars and the prices are great.

I am glad this was delivered when Mr. Savvy was home. I don't think I could have handled this by myself.

We moved out the chairs, coffee table, and old rug and added the new non slip rug pad.

I love the colors of this traditional style rug.

This rug is mostly taupe with beautiful silver blues, sage, maize, brown and red.

It takes on different colors depending on the light coming in.

I just wanted to show you some different shots in different lighting. This rug is by Safivieh and very well made.

This rug was already a great buy and I got an extra discount plus free shipping after Christmas.

Here is a shot of the old rug. The stack of books was hiding a stain.

I think this rug is the perfect match for this room.

Now, it is even cozier.

Wonderful kitchen and family room transformation at Just Grand.

Here is a farm table by Salvaged Whimsy built from a salvaged door and barn wood and yes, this was carried out in the snow to snap some pictures. Brrrrr.

I love this piece of furniture and the color and finish that was created with ASCP by Girl In Pink.

I love this bathroom makeover. Wonderful planked walls and pop of color on the vanity. Be sure and check it out at Maxwell House Interiors.

Tammy of Beatrice Banks shares her wonderful blue dining room. My dining room was this color for years and we loved it.

A Small Change

Besides the leaf dish and etched hurricane that I found at the antique mall, that I shared, I also found this willow basket/tray. I know I just showed you the new sunroom, but hey, I like this basket better.

I have been wanting one of these, but they usually come with a hefty price tag. Well, not this time. This sucker is a good size and it was only $24. Yay!

So I swapped it out with the bamboo tray that I was using here and filled it with the bottles and a few

extras since it had more space to fill.

I was glad to be able to use the bamboo tray back in the great room on the coffee table.

I added a bunch of lavender that I bought last spring

and a pot of greenery to add some softness.

And of course some antlers.

I have miss Leila today. Enjoy your Tuesday and I will

Antique Finds Vignette

Last week I took a much needed me day and went to my favorite antique mall. I added a couple of my finds to the vignette in the foyer. I realized I haven't even shared the vignette I came up with after Christmas and of course it has been tweaked since then.

One of my new finds came in handy on this rainy gloomy day. We have had rain for days.

I came across this beautiful etched hurricane. I love the pretty flowered detail on it and the candle glow shining through it.

I also found this pretty leaf dish that came from Paris.

Added some vintage books.

Some more vintage leather books to add height.

Threw in some old style keys.

The lamp moved back in here from the sun room.

The Powder Room

Yes, it is finally time to reveal the powder room, but before we do let's take a little stroll down memory lane. I wouldn't want you to forget what this lovely room looked like before. Especially the before before.

Ouch, I know your eyes are hurting. Sorry! This is actually the second look to this room, but I don't have any pictures of the original blue on blue striped wallpaper that was in here. That is the reason for this LOVELY faux treatment. The walls were so badly messed up after a week of peeling the wallpaper off that I knew this treatment would hide them.

Yes, I know, more painful images, but we must get through these to appreciate the new look. Trust me.

Okay, much better than the other. This was fine for the last several years, but it was time for an update.

The wallpaper border was removed. I have never been so happy to see that gone!

The mess is finally all cleaned up.

Are you ready for the new and I hope much improved look?

There is no easy way to take pictures of this itty bitty room, but here are the ones I got.

I decided to use a stool as a side table for the soap and hand towels for a farm house look.

Little plate from antique store used as soap dish.

New aged finish on mirror.

Using the Pottery Barn burlap lined basket as a wastebasket. I already owned this.

New bronze faucet from overstock.com.

Hope it is okay to have a picture of something edible in the bathroom.

My favorite painting had to go somewhere and I love the pop of red here.

Mr. Savvy took the brass t.p. holder and the toilet handle and used his bead blaster and removed the shiny finish and spray painted them with ORB. They are just like the store bought finish. Sometimes the car hobby garage comes in handy. He also did the hinges on the door.

I painted both light fixtures in ASCP Old White.

If you look closely you will see that I painted the center of the medallion in ASCP Paris Gray.

I like this much better than the original crackle finish that was on these.

Mr. Piggy moved in here.

Believe me when I say there was much fussing putting this sink back in and trying to get it straight, but

we lived through it.

The beadboard was hung at 2/3 high in the room. I like it high. This room actually feels bigger now.

I will share details on the stool and mirror transformations soon.

Good morning. I hope you have your cup of coffee or tea or whatever else you start the day with because I just have to share this wonderful blog with you. I discovered it a few weeks ago while blog hopping. After picking my lower lip up off my keyboard I just had to keep going back through each of her posts. Karianne is living my dream. She is living in an old farm house that they have lovingly restored. I would love to live in an old farm house, but that isn't going to happen so I will live vicariously through her.

Just look at her kitchen!

Her home is filled with beautiful painted furniture such as this hutch.

Love this red armoire. This is in her boys' area upstairs.

Shoot, this space is cute enough for adults, too. Love these chairs.

In The Pink

I know you don't ever hear me talk about any pink in my home decor, but I think a few touches are nice along with

touches of blue, yellow, green, red, and purple. This is Leila' favorite new toy that my sister gave her for Christmas. How does a mom with no girls know how to pick the best gift?

Enjoying a good book is always nice and having a dog sniff ya while you read.

Sitting on the foot stool, that is just the right size, pulled up to the table appears to be fun.

Blank look when asked to say "Grammy".

When you get tired of sitting at the table just use Grammy's lap.

Always good to watch a little Sesame Street and play at the same time. Learning to multitask.

Learning young to dig for things in a purse. A girl has to have her purse.

Cute pink shoes waiting to be put back on after nap time.

This cute smile turned into a very red and tearful face after falling off the bottom stair. She didn't cry long though after Grammy swooped her up and gave her a big hug and her pacifier. She went home with a couple of goose eggs on her pretty forehead. Mom said she is fine.
Good to hear she is in the pink.

The Other Side

Along with painting the walls and alllllll the trim (I hate painting trim) in the sunroom I also changed the color of the television cabinet. When I started lightening up this room the yellow cabinet just wasn't working for me anymore.

I stacked the drink crates and placed books in them. The coke one was a ten dollar purchase and the Pepsi one was a gift from my daughter last year.

More texture on this side of the room.

This is a homemade lamp that Mr. Savvy put together for me a couple of years ago. This lamp has moved all over the house. It was a piece of pottery I bought at Hobby Lobby at half price and then we added the lamp kit. We drilled a hole using a bit for ceramics for the cord. Added the Pottery Barn shade and voila, a lamp is born.

The first picture was taken before I moved the wicker chair and placed this bench on this wall.

I really think I need to make this bench not look so new. Looks like more painting.

I moved this pillow from the chair I sit in all the time to here. Not a very comfortable pillow to sit against so we will just look at it over here.

The t.v. cabinet was really a pretty simple makeover. I just painted over the yellow with Annie Sloan chalk paint in the color CoCo. This is a gray brown color. After it dried, which isn't long, I mixed clear and dark wax together and put it on and buffed it. I did not do any sanding. I did this in about an hour. I think I may tone down the stripes of the ticking. I kind of want to remove that fabric, but not sure how hard that will be since it was put on with Mod Podge. Does anyone know how hard it is to remove? The stripes go with the other ticking in the room though so for now it will stay.

A Closer Look

Thanks so much for all your wonderful comments regarding my new sun room. I am really enjoying the lighter feel in it. This is where I spend most of my time when I am sitting, which hasn't been much lately.

I just wanted to share a few closer shots of the vignettes on the tables in the sun room. I didn't even realize that I have texture in each vignette. None of these vignettes were planned. I just threw them together with a tweak here and a tweak there.

I decided to bring this vintage tole lamp in here from the foyer. Since I placed the round table between the two chairs I wanted to use this lamp since it has a light bulb on each side with a separate chain for each. If someone wants to sit and look at a magazine or book they will have plenty of reading light.

I found this lamp at an antique mall and loved it as soon as I saw it. Did I need another lamp? Probably not. It isn't in perfect condition, but that is fine with me.

Added my found bird nest in the top of this pot and placed it on a plate and added the cloche.

The nest is textural.

I love the piece of dental floss that the bird found and used and then again I think ewwwwww. Was it used??

The large rustic bird house moved from atop the t.v. chest to this table. I promise you I am not trying to do a bird theme in here. Just using what I had.

This old barn wood bird house is textural, too. The roof is made from old tin tiles.

Decided not to hang these crates back on the wall so I just placed one here and filled it with greenery.

Switched out the lampshade to this burlap one. Loving the texture of the burlap.

My vintage wicker tray adds more texture.

So glad I found a spot to add these old bottles that Mr. Savvy found at the antique mall.

The cork in top of the blue green bottle is the champagne cork from New Year's. It just happens to fit perfectly. The blue green bottle is one that did have the wicker on it, but it was so rotten that I just cut it off and found the pretty bottle under it.

This vintage demijohn adds more texture to this vignette.

Powder room is almost finished and I LOVE it!

Today I have been dusting, vacuuming and mopping. Oh, how I love a clean house.

It has to be clean before Leila comes on Wednesday.

I haven't kept her in a while.

The New Sun Room

Thanks so much for all of you who let me know our house isn't the only one that looks like a bomb went off when doing projects. I have been painting for over thirty years and should be used to the mess it creates. We are in the home stretch on the powder room. Final painting should be tomorrow after the caulk dries.

Now, onto the other project that CRAZY me took on at the same time as the powder room. That's alright though because now I have these changes made and I can just sit back and enjoy my new room.

Here is a before shot from one of my older posts.

This is what it looked like the last time I shared it at Christmas of 2011.

Here it is today with lighter walls and a new furniture arrangement. You didn't think I would put everything back the way it was? In fact I just switched things up from the way I had it when I shared the sneak peeks the other day. Just can't stop tweaking things.

I did have this wicker chair placed by the doorway coming into the room. I decided I like it better over here. The ticking stripe pillow is from OKL (I think).

This is the other side. Isn't it the cutest? Only problem is the blue doesn't really work in this room. When I get slips made for the two chairs then I can flip it to this side.

I decided to put both chairs over on this side of the room so the view to the pond isn't blocked.

I may have to move one of the chairs back to the other side in the summer. We put a window air conditioner unit in the window to the left behind the chair since our system is not large enough to cool this room when it is hot out. For now it will stay like this.

I decided I didn't want the red shutters back in either. I just want it lighter and airier in here.

I put this bench against the wall in place of the wicker chair. I had this in one of the guest rooms.

The cushion I already had from Ballard's. The bench was purchased either from Joss & Main or OKL.

Used pillows I already had. I like the mix of white, red and brown. The center pillow was my Christmas present from my daughter. Does she know me or what? It is from Pottery Barn.

I brought the wicker tray from the great room to use here and filled it with my vintage bottles and a set of antlers.

The little yellow chippy table that was in the powder room is now being used as a plant stand.

The fern is loving it out in the sun room. I stuck it in my vintage orchard basket.

Only succulent left from the summer. I knew I would kill them.

Plenty of reading material in this vintage peach basket that I picked up for five dollars last summer.

Afternoon sun coming in.

I will share the cabinet that houses the television makeover later this week. You can see part of it in one

of the pictures.

The new wall color is white sand by Benjamin Moore.

Trim is chantilly lace by Benjamin Moore same as throughout the house.

Painting on the John

I knew that title would grab your attention. Yes, I have been painting on the john. Fully dressed of course.

Since it is there in my way I just sit on it to paint the lower part of the walls around it. This body of mine is aching from head to toe so if I can sit and paint then that is what I will do.

I thought I would share how the powder room is coming along.

Beadboard wallpaper is up and first coat of paint is on. Walls above are finished.

Still have to paint the second coat. Mr. Savvy still has to add trim to the top of the beadboard. Then I have to paint that. I am soooooo sick of painting.

I am sick of the mess in the house.

I am sick of all the dust.

And I am really sick of my kitchen being the dumping ground for everything.

But most of all I am sick of wearing these paint clothes and looking like a bum. Did I say I was sick of?

The other day I put on real clothes and makeup, since I had to go buy paint, and Mr. Savvy said you look nice today. Poor fella. I have looked awful for days. I told him he forgot what I look like dressed normally.

I am a very messy painter. I don't know how some people can paint without getting it all over them and all over everything else.

Still to do:

Go buy trim and install it at top of beadboard.

Paint second coat of paint.

Finish painting the hanging light and medallion.

Put sink back in.

Install new faucet.

Paint the mirror.

CLEAN!

Chair Redo Redo

How are y'all doing? Sorry I haven't been able to visit your blogs much this week. As most of you know silly me has more than one major project going at a time. Good news is that the sunroom is almost finished and I love it. The powder room is coming slowly. Mr. Savvy has had to mud and sand and mud and sand over and over to fix the holes that were made from raising the light. Now I am getting ready to start the first coat of paint in there. After I clean all the dust up, that is.

So I haven't had time to take lovely pictures around here of anything because this house is such a MESS that there really isn't anything to take pictures of. I do already have pictures of a chair redo in my bedroom that I haven't shown y'all yet. This is another redo of a redo because that is what I do. I did this a few weeks ago. I thought I was going to completely change the color of the chair from a distressed white to Providence by ASCP, but the blue was just too much in my bedroom. I know I told y'all I would share the changes in the master and I promise it is coming soon. Oh, too many things going at one time!

This is the chair that sits in front of the chest next to the bed. I didn't have time to find a before picture of it, but if you remember it was an off white and distressed and glazed.

Originally this chair was a golden maple stain color, but was not in the best of shape so I painted it white. Here you can see where I had painted Provence chalk paint on, but then to lighten it up I just simple did a dry brush technique over it with Old White.

I love the way it turned out even though it was accidentally.

I did not do any sanding this time or waxing. I love the flat finish for now.

All these pictures were taken late one afternoon. I loved the way the sun was hitting on the chair.

Well, I better get back to work. It isn't going to get done by itself.

Winter Mantel

Today I thought I would stop painting for a few minutes and clean the dust off the mantel so I can share some pictures of what I came up with on the mantel after all the Christmas decorations were removed. Now, don't think this look came easy to me because it didn't. It stayed blank for about a day and then an idea came to me and then it got tweaked and tweaked some more till I finally liked it. If you see dust in the pictures just ignore it. The whole house is coated in white.

I used things I had on hand except the vintage wooden box was purchased a few weeks ago at an antique mall.

I would love more vintage boxes if I can find some not priced so high. This one did not come with the key, but one I had on hand actually works.

My brown quails that were in the dining room for Christmas now reside on the mantel.

I love the patina of this box. The tag with it said it is walnut.

I am loving the new look for winter.

No long shot since we still have the sink and light fixture on the floor below.

Such is life.

OK, I must get back to painting. It is taking a while because it is all being done with a brush in order to

get into all the crevices of the beadboard. Second coat on the third wall tomorrow and then onto the last wall which is the stucco wall and is not fun to paint.

Many asked what the new paint color is in the sunroom. It is Benjamin Moore white sand. I tried about three different samples before choosing it.

Ka Razy

We have been ka razy busy around here. The house is a total wreck which is the part I cannot stand, but without mess there is no makeover. Here are some pics from this weekend. I know I usually share pretty pictures of something on Sunday night, but not this time.

Walls have been patched and sanded.

The ~~carpenter/drywall finisher/electrician~~ I mean Mr. Savvy hard at work and don't think he hasn't
complained.

The lighting wires have been raised. He had to work around a pipe in the wall. We think that is why the fixture was hung so low in the first place because the electrician didn't want to fool with it.

The house is covered in this!

Now the next pictures are really going to make you think I have totally flipped my lid, gone over a cliff ka razy, or just plain mad, but I started another project this weekend, too. See I can't paint in the powder room until the mister is out of my way sooooo...........

I started doing this! I have to do these things while I am in the mood and then I probably will not want to touch a paint brush for a few ~~years~~ ~~months~~ ~~weeks~~ days!

I am doing one wall at a time. Two coats plus all the trim. The sofa is on the first finished wall so that I can do the next wall then the next and then the next.

Oh, I am loving the new color. I had grown tired of the green and it was just too much color with the colors in the furniture, accessories and walls. It already feels better even though it looks like a storm blew through.

We have no groceries in the house so tomorrow I must shop and restock then back to painting.

New Design Trend

What? You don't have a pedestal sink and light fixture gracing the front of your fireplace? Why not?

Now, I know you must have a toilet tank in your laundry room. No?

Here are some progress pics of the powder room project 2012.

The light fixture has always been too low. Anyone tall was probably very close to the fixture. So Mr. Savvy will be raising it, complaints and all. :)

Here is a dirty little secret. I don't think I have ever shown y'all the wallpaper border. Yes, there is a wallpaper border.

Not too worry because I have been taking it down.

This stuff works great.

Now, we have this lovely look. Yes, that is a faux paint treatment I did years ago.

Since only the toilet tank was removed and not the bowl I can't reach the rest of the border over the toilet so Mr. Savvy will be finishing this part, hopefully today.

When he finishes his part then I will clean this mess up.

We will be reusing what was in there with some paint updates. I would love to have a vanity instead of the pedestal sink or an antique chest turned vanity, but this is such a tight space that it isn't going to happen.

I have ordered a new faucet from Overstock.com and it is on its way.

So this is the new temporary design trend at the Savvy house.
