Flowers New and Old and Babies

How is the weekend going for you so far? Hope you are doing some fun things. I worked in the yard all day long and it was so hot and humid. I kept taking breaks and would come inside and drink water and cool off and then get back to it.

I thought I would share some pictures of some things outside.

I tried some different flowers on the deck this year. I planted three pots with Speedwell Veronica and ice plant and added them to this chippy worn window box that I bought last year. I use to plant flowers in the yard, but the deer kept eating them so now I just fill pots.

I love the look of the spiny looking speedwell. I had never seen or heard of ice plant before, but I like something to grow over the edge of the pots and this is growing sooooooo fast. Two weeks ago it was not over the pots and now look at it.

It seems someone else loves the speedwell Veronica, too.

Such an unusual color.

I took this shot and the next one at a different time of day. Seems the lighting makes the colors deeper.

I have a basil plant growing on the deck. Looks like I need to use some of it. My, it grows fast.

I planted these gorgeous deep purple petunias in another pot on the deck. I can grow petunias without killing them. The green leafy plant is a zinnia with no flowers. Oops, no it is a gerbera daisy like a commenter told me. I will not plant these again. Every time the flowers die and don't come back. Can't remember what the yellow flowers are. I am not good with flower names obviously.

Now I know petunias are not perennials, but these came back this year. This is a large pot on the driveway close to Mr. Savvy's garage. I had some other petunias come back this year, too. I guess it was because of the mild winter this year.

And I just found out yesterday that we have four Carolina wren babies in this potted tree on the deck. I bought this little evergreen tree back at Christmas, that is why there is Christmas foil around the pot, and we haven't planted it yet and this little family is residing in it for now. After they leave it will be planted. Aren't they cute sleeping?

Dear Pottery Barn,

Yes, I must write you another letter. You know how much I love you. You entice me with your catalog that pops up in my mailbox rather often. Then there are the emails from you in my inbox, too, just full of yumminess. You know that normally I don't buy anything from you at full price unless I just can't live without it and am afraid it will be sold out if I wait. So I wait for sales. But then I have a double whammy. Your outlet store is only thirty miles from me. It is a nice little drive up towards the north Georgia mountains. I just get in my comfy car, turn on the radio to enjoy some music and then before I know it I am standing in ~~candyland~~ your store.
This week you had exceptionally nice things that kept trying to jump in my cart. Yep, that's right. There are carts in the outlet store, but not in your regular store because you know that things will surely come home with me.

Lamps are like a drug to me and I have wanted this one since I saw it in your catalog a few months ago, but it was catalog only and not in the store. Well, guess what? It was in the outlet store this week!

This lamp is like a great big heavy piece of ironstone and you know I love ironstone so of course I wanted this. I love how you distressed it in places, too.

The price tag for just the base said it was regularly priced at $150, but the outlet price was $99. So I stood there and thought about it for a few ~~minutes~~ seconds and in my cart it leaped. Actually more like I huffed and puffed to lift this off the shelf and into the cart. This lamp must weigh forty pounds.

It did not come with a shade so as I strolled around I came upon this linen look large shade and tried it out with the lamp and thought they went together like two peas in a pod. Then I checked the price and the regular store price was $59, but the outlet price was $19. Thanks for such a super mark down.

As I was strolling along with my cart on the way to check out I see this basket. It is a very large basket and just perfect for holding my books or I could put some throws in there in the winter months.

Baskets are so versatile and I have admired these from afar in the store, but just wasn't willing to pay the original price of $79. Oh, but this one wasn't $79. No way Jose. The outlet price on this Shayne basket was 38.97. But wait! That price was slashed through in red with a new price of.........wait for it...............
$19.97. Yep, you saved me $60 big ones on this basket and I truly appreciate it.

I decided to place it under the bench in the sunroom for now. Great for extra storage since I am running out of places for my books.

Now PB, can I call you PB? I don't want you to think that was all that came home with me because there was a couple more things. I just wanted to write and thank you for having some great buys this week. Sometimes it is a hit or miss. The cart came in real handy this time.

New Chair, Old Table....change in the sunroom

I decided to go ahead and order another chair from overstock.com like the first one. It was delivered just a few days after ordering it. I have had it a few weeks and then this morning I was sitting here having my morning coffee and all of a sudden I was switching tables and lamps and pillows and then after getting dressed made a trip to the Pottery Barn outlet. What can we say?

This is the chair I had that I ordered back in March.

And here is the new one. Yep, just alike.

I took out the round table and will show you where it moved to soon. I decided to use this table that was in the great room at the end of the sofa. This little table was a flea market find last year and my very first Annie Sloan chalk paint project.

This is a shot of when I first revealed it.

So after placing this table here I didn't like the green demijohn lamp very much and decided to change this demijohn into a lamp. I just removed the lamp kit from the green one and placed it on this bottle then placed this shade on it and, voila, a new lamp.

Thought I would show you my cobalt blue bottle that I bought on our trip last weekend. It is an old Phillip's Milk of Magnesia bottle. I like the added pop of blue on the table to tie in with the blue added in this room.

Oh, and here is another peak. Some small changes were made again today after going to the Pottery Barn Outlet.

Vintage Scale and Found Nest

Yesterday I shared my loot with you that I brought home this weekend and today, after cutting the grass and inbetween working on the laundry, I played around with my stuff. Here is a vignette I created using the vintage black scale and a little bird nest I found in my hydrangea last week.

I switched the large round willow tray with this oblong wicker tray that was on the coffee table in the great room. I filled it with vintage demijohns a tiny fern and the vintage scale. This is the first scale I have found with a round tray and I believed it is made of iron. This vignette is on top of the television cabinet in the sun room. I love mixing textures and natural items and then adding something unusual like the scale.

I hope everyone had a glorious weekend. Mine was wonderful. We went on a little road trip. It all started out with me telling Mr. Savvy last weekend that I sure would love to go to Lucketts. He even agreed to go. Do what? Okay, what did you do with the real Mr. Savvy? The poor man hates to shop, but I guess he loves me. Then I looked at the map to see how far away this was and a 10.5 hour drive one way wasn't sounding too good, but I still wanted to go antiquing so we just stayed in the south and did some shopping.

The first few photos are of a stop we made in Mississippi at an antique mall that at first I was questioning that it really was one. These shots were taken with my ipad 2.

All of you who love junking would have loved this place, but at first it looked a little scary to me.

Look at all those old doors in the distance. If we had a truck I probably would have bought one.

Tons of shutters.

This truly was a junk place on the outside.

Anyone need a Subway sign?

It was like walking through a maze from one junk room to the next.

This stuff outside was filthy.

Cool clock. Buddha, anyone?

How about an owl? Lots of y'all love owls.

Pretty brass bed was sold.

Then after this I thought my ipad had quit taking pictures, but somehow it got switched to video. We went inside and I didn't get any pictures. It was much nicer on the inside and air conditioned. Still stuff to the brim though.

We stopped at around five different places and this is my loot.

Finally found some decent vintage suitcases. The top one is navy.

Added another old olive jar to my collection. Couldn't pass this up with that price.

Favorite find is probably the hornet's nest.

Only $22 and huge! Glad everyone has moved out.

Now I will have to play house again as the mister calls it and figure out where this stuff is going.

I will share more close ups with you soon.

We haven't been home very long and he wants to go see the movie Battleship. Yuck. Guess that is the price I have to pay for him having to go shopping with me this weekend.

I am so thrilled that I finally have hydrangea blooms on this bush. Two years ago I had none, nada. Last year I had three tiny blooms. Wow, look at them this year and I didn't do a thing to it.

Of course I had to cut some blooms to bring inside.

I think I will be enjoying lots of blooms this summer.

Birds in the Guest Room

I was asked when I shared the other guest room, where my son and dil stay, where do the kids sleep. They sleep in the guest room right across the hall except the baby. He sleeps in the room with his parents.

If you missed this room a few months ago I had different bedding on here for the winter months. I love bringing the bird bedding back out. At least there are no dandelions on this bedding.

At first I couldn't find the duvet cover and one of the shams. I looked everywhere and started to panic a bit.

I finally came across the missing pieces a couple of days later on the very bottom of the stack of pillows and duvets stored in the closet and I was just overlooking them.

I lucked up several years ago finding a bedskirt with a long drop for this bed on ebay. It is made from white sheets and was only around $20. Can you say bargain?

Rachele, the three year old sleeps in the big bed and Naomi the two year old sleeps in the baby bed. Leila also naps in this bed when I keep her which is twice a week now for a few weeks.

Just because.

All the bedding except the sheets and coverlet are Pottery Barn,

Sheets are Ralph Lauren from Home Goods.

Wall color is Dill Weed by Benjamin Moore.

Lamps, pictures, accessories have been collected over the years.

Bed was purchased at Rooms To Go several years ago.

Dear Pottery Barn

Dear Pottery Barn,

Why oh why would you create bedding with dandelions all over it?? Oh, if you only knew how much I despise dandelions. It is an aggressive WEED with one heck of a root system that makes it hard to kill and hard to dig up. I have blisters on my hands and at least 100 holes in my front yard where I am trying to get rid of these nuances.

Yes, some of the other flowers on the duvet may be pretty, but you could have used a yellow flower like daisies instead of these dreaded weeds. When those little white fluff balls get a good wind blowing through the seeds can spread for miles and then the process starts all over again. Next spring my yard will be covered again because I have neighbors up the street whose entire yard is covered in these things and the seeds will be sure to show up in my yard.

So anyway this will not be showing up on my bed unless I want to have nightmares about how to get rid of the dandelions. I am at war with these things.

Oh, and one more thing. I was all ready to order one of these, but of course it is on back order and is catalog order only. Oh, how I wish it was in the stores.

I will still keep shopping with you, even though you carry dandelions on bedding and are out of these baskets, because I am always buying bedding and pillow covers from you. It's an addiction.

Turning Blue

I have told y'all that I have been adding blue in the sun room. Well, while watching television the other day the cabinet that it is in told me to paint it again. Yes, my furniture talks to me and I tried to ignore it, but I am weak and caved. I didn't have any blue paint so I went to the local antique mall and bought two sample jars of ASCP in Louis Blue and Greek Blue. Here is what I did.

Let's see. How many layers of paint do I have on here now?

I'm not sure. I have lost count.

But the more layers I add the crustier and chippier and older it looks.

Isn't that the look most of us are trying to create?

I painted the Louis Blue and Greek Blue on in different areas and took some back off with a damp rag. After it was dry I waxed with clear and dark waxes and then buffed.

Yep, that is what this piece told me to do. Ignore the reflection on the t.v.

More Dogs in the House

I hope everyone had a great weekend and Mother's day with your families. Our kids and grands have all gone home, but we had such a great time together.

I wanted to share a little wooden box that I bought on ebay back in January to add to my growing collection.

Dogs in decorating have been all the rage and I knew when I saw this box with the dogs on top that it would be perfect in the sitting room. It is scratched, but that is all part of the old worn patina.

The front of it is wavy. I guess this is an art deco style. The dogs on top are painted on with an inlay around them.

The box sits on the table under my favorite dog picture

along with the rest of the dogs in this room. It was a very rainy day when I took these pictures. Makes me want to curl up with a book.

Best part, the box was only $5. Cheapest box I have found.

We have had the most fun this weekend with our family. I just wanted to share a few more shots from this weekend. These are not the best pictures, but it was very cloudy out and the lighting was poor.

This is our grandson, Joshua, who is 6 months old now.

Sweet Surprise

My son and family arrived last night and the grand girls popped out of the van with a sweet surprise.

They handed me this beautiful bouquet of flowers.

They also made me this sweet card. Aren't homemade cards the best? I also had an ebay gift card. Woo hoo

I snapped some quick shots of the girls at breakfast this morning while they were still long enough.

This is Naomi. She is two.

This is Rachele and she is 3 3/4.

Baby Joshua was still asleep since he was awake several times last night.

They have gone to the park this morning to meet up with some friends for awhile. They may end up at McDonald's since it is very cloudy with a threat of rain.

I better go get dressed for the day while they are gone.

Bailey Built

Last weekend we purchased a Troy Built tiller for our new gardening venture here at the Savvy homestead. Yep, I guess it is my Mother's Day gift and his Father's Day gift. We used it to add another bed in our ever growing first garden. Well, we just realized we probably wasted that money because who needs a gas powered tiller when you have one of these. This is a Bailey Built!

She dug all that in less than five minutes. Go girl go! No gas needed. Just some food, water and snacks now and then.

She would dig and rest and then start all over again. Look at the dirt on her tongue.

She would dig and stick her snout in the hole. Not sure what she thought she was digging up.

Yes, Bailey you are getting quite filthy, but you sure are having fun.

She really doesn't like the heat and it was very hot the day she did this. So she was trying to cool off with her hind end in the shade and lying on the cool dirt. She really tore the ground up very quickly with little breaks in between.

You can see our first garden box here and she was digging right where another one will go.

We have one box and the area in front of it does not have a box around it yet, but will have one added. Then we will add one where Bailey was digging to the right of this box and then in front of that we want to plant silver queen corn. Our grass has basically all died in the last year so we might as well have a garden.

I will share more pictures of the garden and what is planted soon.

Ready For Guests

On Friday our son, daughter in law, and three grandchildren will be arriving for a weekend visit so I have been sprucing up the guest rooms. I snapped some pictures of the room that was my son's when he lived here. This is where he and our dil stay. Most of y'all have seen this room before and it has only had some accessories changed. I know, can you believe it? I have contemplated changing this room.

I know it is hard to believe, but the items on the shelves had stayed the same for years so I changed them up a little. I added the Lake Rabun sign and the black dogs.

I kept the sailboat which was purchased at Home Goods years ago.

I kept this fellow from the flea market, too.

This funny guy was on the shelves, but I moved him down to the trunk.

The trunk is one of the first antiques we purchased around 34 years ago for $55. Makes the perfect nightstand.

This pillow that I ordered years ago was the start to how this room came about.

For those new here I purchased the vintage swimsuit on ebay and framed it in this shadowbox.

I am seriously thinking about painting over this armoire again. Just not loving it.

The navy shirt was Mr. Savvy's and I framed it last year.

I think I need to paint that cherry nightstand, too. Hmmmmm.

Color suggestions?

Alright, let's check my list for getting ready for guests:

1. Put clean sheets on beds.

2. Dusted and vacuumed rooms.

3. Cleaned bathrooms.

4. Clean towels are ready.

Still to do:

1. Buy groceries.

2. Mow grass.

3. Run vacuum through main floor again.

4. I will remove the abundance of pillows so they don't have to.

Yep, think that's it.

Eighteen Months

I babysat Leila yesterday and got a really good work out lifting her up on the sofa over and over and over. She is now eighteen months old and she has a hard time pronouncing Grammy. It comes out Deeby. That's alright, Deeby is good. Oh, and Grand Dad is Dang Dad. She talked my ears off all day except when she napped. Here are some shots I grabbed of her while she sat fairly still for a minute.

Looking forward to my other grands coming for a visit this weekend. Hopefully I can grab some shots of them, too if they hold still long enough.

Now I need to get this house cleaned up.

In the Dining Room

A few weeks ago I received two baluster candle stands that I had ordered from Joss & Main with a credit I had. I didn't realize until they arrived that they were solid concrete and weigh thirty pounds each. I guess I should read the description better before I place an order.

I placed them in the dining room and lived with them like this for a couple of weeks, but something just wasn't feeling right to me. I know what it is. Can you say BORING? I am sure you can guess where this is going. :)

Yep, out came some Annie Sloan chalk paint.

I brushed Country Grey haphazardly all over both of them.

Then I took a damp paper towel and dabbed it all over and rubbed it to take some paint back off and to soften it. Then that wasn't enough of a change so I grabbed a sample pot of Louis Blue and brushed it here and there and took some of that back off with the wet paper towel.

I love the way they turned out and it only took me ten minutes.

I pulled out this planter that was stored away and filled it with plastic bags and then piled the top with my shell collection.

I like using shells during the summer months for a nice looking centerpiece.

Now the new look is much better instead of dark and drab.

You can see this is where the kuboo chairs ended up that use to be in the sun room.

I will share how I made a simple change to the cushions and a closer look at the pillows soon.

Miss Bailey always looks out the window over there and is ruining the finish on the shutters.

The Cows are Home

I am sure y'all have been wondering where the cow hangings ended up since I took them out of the breakfast room. I ended up putting them on about the only wall I had for them to go on. The stair landing is usually a forgotten space, but I have made a little spot to sit and browse magazines if I am too tired to walk up the stairs. lol. I ordered a new light to put in this area and I know I have a before picture of the old fixture somewhere, but cannot find it.

As you can see I placed my Ballard's bench that was in the dining room here in place of the blue gray one I moved to the sun room. Domino effect here, people. In fact the light fixture that was here moved to a different spot, but the wall around it has to be painted.

This is the view from the great room. I just adore my new light that Mr. Savvy hung for me.

I ordered this light from Lighting Showplace last week and had it in a few days. It was less than $75.

I bought the vintage style light bulb at Home Depot. Had to have this for the right look.

I love the cow hangings here.

I placed this huge burlap bolster on the bench.

Placed the dough bowl under the bench and filled it with favorite magazines.

Don't forget about the stair landing if you have room for a sitting area or just a little table and lamp. I don't have an outlet here for a lamp so did the bench instead.

Front Porch 2012

I finally did a little fluffing on our front ~~stoop~~ porch. I am such a copy cat and ~~stole~~ borrowed the idea of using an old wicker chair from The Head Mistress, but didn't actually plant plants on the chair.

This wicker chair use to be in the sun room until one of the back legs broke off. So now it can be a plant stand. I dug the moss up from our yard .The moss is trying to take over in part of the back yard close to the wood line so I have plenty and it is very easy to dig up.

I still have my little concrete dog that I bought two years ago and spray painted black.

If you look at the wicker chair you can see the back leg is missing. Three legs work fine for this.

All the flowers were planted last weekend and I hope soon they spill over the sides.

This pot is chipping since it was left out over the winter.

This is the old fern that was in the sun room. I stuck it in this old chippy urn. I think it will do well out here. It is full of new growth.

I can finally show y'all the number sign I won many months ago from a giveaway by Ramsign at the blog Random Thoughts from an Incoherent Mind. I had tried many times to win one of these and finally did.

That is all the fluffing for now. We have been doing lots of yard work each weekend including putting in
a garden in the back yard. I will share some pics soon.

The Lucky One

I haven't shared any movie reviews lately and this one is a new favorite. "The Lucky One" with Zach Efron and Taylor Schilling, adapted from the book by Nicholas Sparks, is so good. Blythe Danner is also in it and I always love to see her in things. The mister was hesitant to go and said it was a chick flick, but he liked it, too.

The house in this movie is the kind I would love to have with the old wood floors, high ceilings, and wavy glass windows and doors. Even Mr. Savvy whispered to me and said you like this house don't you? He knows me too well.

This little boy who plays her son is too cute.

Just look at the build up of layers of paint on this door and that old glass. Just had to squeeze this one in.

Even though I was checking out the home and the beautiful scenery in this film the story was very good, too.

So glad we went to see it.

Vintage Copper Gift

I received the sweetest gift a few weeks ago and am just now getting around to sharing it with you. Susan of

Maple and Magnolia emailed me asking me for my address. She was out treasure hunting and thought of me when she saw these vintage French copper measuring cups. I was so touched to say the least. The kindness of bloggers and friends we have never met always amazes me.

I have never seen anything like these before which makes them even more special. Great patina, too.

There are three of them. They are tall and narrow unlike our measuring cups.

I thought I would show them off by creating what looks like a cookie making session.

I could have made a batch of cookies, but since our air conditioning went out it just wasn't happening so I put everything back up.

These would not have made a very good post if I had just taken a picture of them sitting on the counter, now would they?

So I pulled out my vintage yellow ware bowl that I have had for thirty years or more and the other goodies and snapped some shots for you.

See what I do for y'all.

It's A Southern Thang

I want to show you a simple change I made yesterday to the fireplace. In the winter I have logs sitting in it, but for the warmer seasons I like a basket of greenery.

A common choice for a southern fireplace is magnolia branches.

Problem is I don't have any magnolia trees, oh, but my neighbors do.

So I went over with clippers and a basket in hand and ~~stole, borrowed, clipped, snipped, took,~~ helped myself to their trees. Of course I had permission. They told me to take all I wanted.

I can't wait to see how these dry out. I have not used real magnolia branches before. I love the look of real greenery and bringing the outdoors in.

If any of you seasoned magnolia branch users know anything I should do special for these branches, please let me know. For now I will just enjoy the fresh greenery.

It's a southern thang.
