The Finished Table and a Winner

The table is done. I think. Yes, it's done. For now.

As I told you last Friday I painted the table with Annie Sloan chalk paint in French Linen. This is a pretty greige color.

I added chalk paint in the color Graphite to these crevices. I purposely did it messy.

Instead of using just clear wax or dark wax I mixed some of the Graphite chalk paint with some clear wax. I love the way it gave the paint color more depth and filled in the worm holes with the black color.

Here it is sitting between my two new chairs. Please excuse the cord. I hate cords.

Now you see why I painted the table. As you can see I have new chairs and I am loving the new look.

They are the Kooboo wicker chairs from World Market.

I was going to have the two old chairs either upholstered again or have slipcovers made, but I didn't want to spend that much money on them again. For now I will use these in here until I find some comfy club chairs at an affordable price. I have used the other chairs for a gazillion years and it was just time for a change. They will be going to a consignment shop.

I took my grain sacks and wrapped them around the white cushions for now.

When I find more chairs I can move these to the dining room since they are made to sit at a table. They sit very high.

Bling

I told you in the master bath post that I was still working on the chandelier over the tub. Well, yesterday I found what I was looking for to finish it.

Let's start at the beginning with an old shot of how the chandy did look.

I used to have the shades on it which are really bad dust collectors. So off those came.

Next thing I did was take the brown metal candle sleeves off and replaced them with these resin sleeves. Funny thing is I did this step several weeks ago and then I was looking at my blog friend, Martina's blog Northern Nesting and she was sharing the same thing she had done to her chandy. I am telling you we were joined at the hip at some point. We do so many things the same way.

Here is the look of the chandy with the new sleeves. This alone was a huge change.

I still wanted something more than just the sleeves changed. It needed some bling.

Martina had also added some crystal bling to her chandy and I told her she was doing the same thing I was to mine and that I just needed to order the crystals. Well, the kindness of bloggers literally blows me away because she emailed me and told me she had some leftover crystals and that she would send them to me if I wanted them. I offered to buy them from her and she would not let me. She is just too sweet. Thank you, Martina! She sent the large ones you see hanging.

I still wanted more bling and yesterday when I was walking through a local antique mall I found the strands of glass beads. They are five inches long and came two in a pack for $3.70. I bought six packages and brought them home and added them.

Bam, there is that extra bling it needed. I am loving the new look. I really would love to replace the dark colored glass parts with clear ones some day when I can get the mister to take it apart and add them, but for now this works fine.

Now I just need to get a dimmer switch added to the lights in here. It is blindingly bright.

The Master Bath

I was going to wait till we painted the bathroom cabinets before revealing the new look in here, but it may be a few more weeks before those are done. Trying to let Mr. Savvy's back heal some more before we sand and paint the doors. I want him to spray them with his paint sprayer that he uses on his old cars.

The new wall color is the same color I have in the nautical guest room. It is Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore. I was afraid it might look dark, but it turned out perfectly. I am also waiting on two new rugs from Joss & Main to come in.

Here is the before look. The walls were Saybrook Sage by BM paint and I never did like it. It was too brown looking in here.

Ah, the new color is lighter, brighter and just plain fresher. You can see I changed the art and items on top of the newly painted hutch. All these things were brought from other places in the house.

I like the mix of contemporary and vintage.

I opened the hutch doors so you can see what I have placed inside. A few towels up top along with a piece of coral, a shell, and a jar of cotton balls. Other towels are stored below.

I love the color and finish of the inside.

I filled the silver revere bowl with natural loofahs.

These items did not change.

Here is a before of the artwork over the bath tub area.

I decided to place my huge bird picture in here. I think the size and colors are perfect in here.

Vignette in the corner below the bird print with a sea fan, candlestick, and bowl of soaps.

Here is a peak at the chandelier which I made some changes to, but will share a closer look at it another time. Still working on it.

The clock has been moved from beside the tub to over the door to the bedroom. This is so Mr. Savvy won't be late for work. Of course he won't fire himself if he is.

The old globes on the lights were a yellowish color, which you can't tell with them turned on, but believe me they were. They made everything look yellow including me.

I replaced them with clear seeded glass globes and boy oh boy what a difference. Our old eyes need this bright light. We can see good in here now.

And there you have it until we paint the cabinets.

Bit That Bullet Again

It wasn't too big of a bite. Just a little one. I have had my eye on this wonderful old copper mold on ebay for weeks. I really didn't want to fork out $48 for it, but I succumbed and did. I am glad I did, too. This mold is huge.

I brought it in the sun room just to take some pictures in good light.

See how big it is? I love the aged patina. So much better than the shiny new ones.

Looks like it was well used, too. Nice and black inside.

This side view shows how deep it is. This would make a cool cake, but it will just hang on the wall.

Do you see where the copper is turning green? Gotta love it.

I have moved some pieces around and placed it on this kitchen wall. This is a great find to add to my collection. Now, if I only had more walls for when I find more.

At It Again

As you know I just cannot leave things alone. I know I need therapy, but I made a bit of a change with something yet again in the sun room (you are probably sick of hearing about the sun room) and that meant that I needed to change the color of this table. Hey, I have to use all my leftover paint somewhere.

Yes, I am finally painting this little round table. The golden color just does not work in here anymore.

So out came my Annie Sloan chalk paint in French Linen. Love this color. I have a little more than a 1/4 of a can, but that will be more than enough for this small project.

After fifteen minutes of painting the first coat is on.

I love that the chalk paint brings out all the details. I bet you didn't know this table is covered in worm holes.

Well, it will dry for a little bit and then I need to do another coat and then figure out what other steps I will do to this piece.

This is what I am working on today while it is stormy outside. What are you doing today?

You Had Me at Burlap

What is it about burlap that has made it such a huge trend in decorating? I mean the stuff is scratchy and doesn't even smell good yet it is used so much in home decor. Here are some ways that I found it being used and something new I bought, too.

This is my new burlap pillow from Joss & Main that I got several weeks ago.

I was glad to get this pillow. I hesitated putting it in my basket and then it was in someone else's basket. I waited a few minutes and it became available again and I snatched it! If you shop Joss & Main then you know what I am talking about. These items are available for a short time at a discount.

I knew it would be perfect in my sitting room.

The fact that it is trimmed in leather makes it even better.

When it is cold and gray outside this is a good spot to curl up with a book. This is the most comfortable chair in the house.
Today we had a heat wave of over 75. Isn't it still February?

On Our Way Back

We had a very busy holiday weekend. We attended a funeral for a sweet old friend and then took a mini trip out of town. We are on our way back now.

Tomorrow we will celebrate 37 years of marriage so we went off to celebrate.

You Can Call Me Crazy........

.......but you will have to get in line behind Mr. Savvy. Yep, I have gone and changed up the mantel again. I am telling y'all when I walked by it it asked for help. I had to listen to it and this is what it asked for.

This is what it did look like up until a couple of weeks ago. I told y'all I had been painting everything in sight except Mr. Savvy and Bailey, but they better watch out! The mantel was painted Annie Sloan chalk paint in Chateau Gray and it was nice for a while.

Now it has been painted with CoCo by Annie Sloan. It really goes much better with the color of the marble surround.

Here is a picture during the process. You can see the color difference.

The new chalk paint color is still drying here.

I love the new color. When Mr. Savvy came in while I was painting it he just stopped and rolled his eyes. I am quite used to it by now. He does like the new color better.

After the paint was dried I waxed the whole thing with clear wax and only used a little dark wax on this applique.

This job took me less than two hours. That is the beauty of this paint.

At least the vignette on top is still the same.

Now that I have a couple of years of posts under my belt I thought it would be fun to see what I posted around this date two years ago. So here is a post of my master bedroom and what it looked like in February 2010. It's fun to see how much it has changed. You can see the new look here.

BIRDS AND FLOWERS EQUAL SPRING..........

....in the bedroom. Yes, I have finally finished the master bedroom. I shared how I did the mirror and chest yesterday and now I can show you the rest of the room. I loved the new bird print duvet that came out at Pottery Barn and it was the lowest priced duvet I have ever gotten from there, even on sale. I thought it was a mistake at first when I saw the price, but it was right so I went ahead and bought it. I love how it just makes the room feel lighter and fresher just like the spring season does after a long winter. This year we had a very cold and snowy winter over most of the country. I am so glad that spring officially begins this Saturday. I cannot wait to start working in the yard again. After I bought the duvet and put it on the bed it wasn't quite looking right with the pillows I had. I ordered two white twill euro shams monogrammed with brown letters from Ballard's and added them in place of the tan gingham and still something wasn't quite right. So I went back to Pottery Barn and got the two bird pillow covers which are 24 inch and set them in front of the 26 inch white shams and bingo, that was it. You can't see the monograms, but this is the look I was going after. I added the burlap pillow, also from Pottery Barn, and the little french script pillow that I bought from Gina at the Shabby Chic Cottage blog etsy store. Went to a local flea market and bought a vintage platter with tiny little blue flowers on it and hung it over the mirror over the dresser. Changed out some other accessories and the room is done! I did take a lot of pictures.

If you can see the "A" monogram on the pillow case and sheet and wondering why I would have "A" on my sheets instead of "N" it is because I got a really good deal on these on ebay with the "A". I figured my middle name starts with "A" so why not.

I bought this little vintage magazine holder at a flea market over a year ago. I love when things just seem to come together at a later time and you had no idea it was going to work out that way.

Faux painted ceiling and new ceiling fan. Old fan was brass and outdated.

When we were in Italy I took pictures of doors on the front of buildings and framed some of them. This is a close up of one of the doors. They have such beautiful huge solid wood doors over there.

Keeping Watch

There is something lurking under that vent.

What is it, Bailey?

Do you smell it or hear it, girl? Or maybe both?

Whatever it is it drives you crazy every night around ten o'clock.

Bailey goes nuts over this vent every night now. She whimpers and whines and barks at it.

Then she starts attacking the vent cover. She gets beside herself and has to come tell us to come look if we aren't in here.

Then she stops and listens and sniffs again. Sorry for the close up of her behind.

Then back to scratching the vent again. This goes on until she is either exhausted or we go to bed. Mr. Savvy went under the house to check it out and did not see anything, but we may have a mice or rat family living in the insulation so he is going to check it out further so Bailey doesn't go totally insane.

These dogs were developed to catch rats in old mills. She is just doing her job and keeping watch.

Good job Bailey!

Dear Ballard Designs

Dear Ballard Designs,

Usually I love your products. I have ordered a few things from you over the years and have never had to return anything. I had been wanting these items for quite some time, but was unwilling to pay $25 apiece plus tax and shipping charges so I waited.....and waited.....and waited for them to go on sale. Then a few days ago I received an email about a new sale and there they were!

The beautiful bee chandelier shades were finally on sale! Now, I have to decide what color. Black? White? Red? Sage? Sage was the winner. Such a pretty soft pale green.......

......Not! More like an apple green with Kelley green mixed in and very very shiny. Not at all the way it looked on your site. I was so disappointed when I pulled them out of the box.

And then I thought well, maybe the color will grow on me until I saw IT. Do you see IT, too? Look at the blob of paint or whatever that is on the shade. A big boo boo on my new shade. After seeing that I knew I would have to send them back to you. I know you will understand. I had only ordered two to go on a sconce. I had wanted six for my breakfast room light, but changed my mind and glad I did. Thank goodness return shipping is free. And one more thing dear Ballard's.......

...why don't you send two chandelier shades in a BIG HONKIN BOX next time?!! I mean really! I pulled out the plastic air cushion thingies and paper and more air cushion thingies and more paper just to get to the shades. You must have been out of smaller boxes that day. I am sure that must be the reason for this waste. Maybe the shipping charges could be some what less if you would send small items in a small box. Just thought you might want to consider that idea.

I am sure I will order from you yet again, because you will send me more enticing emails and another catalog will arrive for me to thumb through and fold down the corners on the pages of my wants.

I look forward to a refund on my card.

Disappointed

Adding to a New Collection

A few weeks ago I shared with you a vintage wooden box that I picked up at an antique mall. You can see that post here. Of course that has caused me to look at any and all wooden boxes I spy now. That's just what I need, another collection starting.

The first time I spotted this beauty it was more than I wanted to pay. This is really old and not cheap. The prices of these old boxes can be pretty steep.

But, oh, how I wanted it. Just look at that patina from years of use.

Beautiful golden color and inlaid name on top.

Looks like it may say Worthington, but it is so worn it is hard to read.

The inside of this was probably red originally, but has changed to a purplish hue over the years.

The leather on the bottom is very worn and faded, too.

The wood on the edges is very worn.

When I went back to the antique mall again it had been marked down from $125 to $85 so I went ahead and bought it.

I haven't even shown y'all the vignette on this drop leaf table since Christmas.

I love how all my vintage finds have created this vignette.

I still love my little twelve dollar cow scene I found last year. Now, I am on the hunt for an affordable large cow landscape to hang over the fireplace. This may take awhile.

As you can see this box is quite large and I believe the tag said vintage English box.

Now I am ready to show y'all the newest look of the sun room again. I had told y'all in an earlier post after I revealed the new look that it had taken on a bird theme and that was not the new look I was going for so with a few changes it is now where I want it. Well, for the time being.

This WAS the new look, but not quite right.

This is her new look. When I ordered a small 2 x 3 version of this rug from Joss & Main I brought it in here and just loved it so I went on the hunt for a larger one and found it on wayfair.com formerly csn.com.

I thought I could live with the neutral rug, but nope nada. I love this rug. It is 100% wool. Probably the most I have ever spent on a rug this size, too. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet.

I added old grain sacks to the wicker chairs.

I added this bull to the basket just for the heck of it.

Bought this candle holder from Wuslu just like my sister did. Neither one of us knew the other had ordered it.

I believe it has more of the look I was going for now.

The Vow

It's time for another movie review by mois.

The hubby and I went to see "The Vow" with Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams this weekend. This is a really good date movie and it might be nice to see with Valentine's coming up.

This is based on a true story, which I did not know until the end of it, about a couple in love and then they are involved in an accident that causes her not to remember anything about him or their relationship. It shows how deeply in love with her he is and he is not willing to lose that without a fight.

So if you are looking for something to do on Valentine's day just grab your honey by the hand and go see this movie. Much better than fighting the crowds at the restaurants.

omelet pan, a flu cover, pressure cooker lid, oh, and I love this one....an over sized door knocker, and my favorite was that if the label didn't say bed warmer then it was mislabeled. Oh, and Kat, no, it is not a toilet lid! ha, ha.

The only one who had the correct answer was Marigene. I should have had a prize to give. I didn't know this was going to be so tough for y'all.

It does hang just like I have it and you grab hold of the thing at the bottom and........

.....you lift it open to find your KEYS!

I placed my decorative keys in it just for these pictures.

So now you know it is a key holder.

Kind of cool isn't it?

I found this copper piece a couple of weeks ago to add to my collection.

The first thing that attracted me besides being copper was the shape and the basket of flowers.

Take a good look at it.

I didn't know what it was until I read the tag.

Do you know what it is?

Do you own one?

Most of y'all are probably smarter than me and know what it is.

I finished painting the hutch for the master bathroom before the painter was finished with the walls. Loving the new color in the bathroom. Still have to freshen the trim and paint the cabinets. Mr. Savvy will spray the doors and drawers and I will paint the base. Then I think we can call it done.

Now on to the hutch. Some of you may not know that this was Mr. Savvy's mom's hutch. She died from cancer when he was fifteen. So of course he has hung on to this piece.

This is the finished look except I may add some more dark wax to the left door. Always find things wrong when I look at pictures.

Now I will give you the steps of what I did and more finished shots.

I painted the whole piece with Annie Sloan chalk paint in French Linen. I have used this on everything and still have half a can left. I then painted the doors and drawers with a coat of Paris Gray AScp.

Then I took Aubusson chalk paint and brushed it in spots with a smaller brush (just like the cabinet in the sun room method) and took a damp paper towel and blended it. Here you can see one door done and one not.

You can see how the Aubusson has been added to these doors.

After all the paint was dry I started sanding it.

You can see the many layers of colors here. This poor hutch has been painted several times. Of course I love the layers that show through with sanding.

Now, the rest of the pictures are the finished piece. I used clear wax all over the whole thing and then added dark wax in places.

I also added some Provence chalk paint in places on the doors.

Oh, and yes I worked on this in the great room. I had a drop cloth down while working.

Here you can see the Chateau Gray and Old Ochre that were the colors it was before this time.

I will show it too you in the bathroom soon.
