Arriving at SAC Headquarters

Your Stanley rafting adventure begins at Sawtooth Adventure Company headquarters.

Plan to arrive about 15 minutes before your scheduled trip time. This gives you time to meet your guide, check in, and get outfitted with any rafting gear needed for the day.

For example, if your lunch rafting trip begins at 11:00 AM, plan to arrive around 10:45 AM.

Once everyone is checked in and ready to go, we’ll load up on the bus and head downstream toward the Salmon River put-in. The shuttle ride takes about 15–20 minutes and is a great time to get excited for the adventure ahead.

Getting on the Salmon River

Once we arrive at the river, your guide will show you to your raft, help get everyone settled, and go through an important safety orientation before launching.

Then it’s officially time to start your Stanley whitewater rafting adventure!

First Rapid: Piece of Cake

Right around the corner is the first rapid of the day: Piece of Cake.

This fun and splashy rapid is the perfect way to kick off your Salmon River rafting trip near Stanley. It wakes everyone up fast and usually gets the whole boat laughing, screaming, and smiling immediately.

Make sure to smile big or strike a pose… photos are often taken here!

Scenic Floating, Wildlife & River History

After the excitement of the first rapid, the river mellows out into fun Class II whitewater and scenic floating sections.

Riverside Lunch

We’ll stop along the river for a delicious riverside meal and some time to relax. Upon arrival at our river-side lunch camp guests will have the opportunity to play river games, relax in comfortable chairs and enjoy a spectacular lunch including our famous Dutch oven cakes, salads, pasta dishes, fruit, gourmet wraps, and more. We will always accommodate any food allergies or sensitivities. Please call with any specific dietary requests.

This is the perfect chance to refuel, enjoy the scenery, and take in the full Idaho outdoor adventure experience before getting back on the water.

Returning to Headquarters

As the rafting trip comes to an end, we’ll arrive at the take-out where the bus will be waiting for us.

The shuttle back to headquarters typically takes around 30 minutes. Along the drive, guides often point out the rapids you just ran, which is always fun to see from the road after experiencing them from the river.

Once back at SAC headquarters, you can change into dry clothes in our changing rooms and check out the rafting photos from Piece of Cake on our TV screen.

7:30 AM – Coffee in Ketchum Before the Adventure Begins

First things first: caffeine and snacks.

Before leaving town, swing by Java on Fourth, a cozy local coffee shop in Ketchum. Grab a strong coffee, a breakfast burrito, or one of their fresh pastries for the road.

If you are anything like me, you’ll want a little fuel before the drive, but I recommend not too much because a delicious breakfast awaits you in Stanley!

8:00 AM – The Scenic Drive from Sun Valley to Stanley

By now you’re on the road heading north from Sun Valley toward Stanley.

The drive over Galena Summit is one of the most scenic mountain drives in Idaho. As you crest the pass, the Sawtooth Mountains suddenly explode into view- a rugged skyline of jagged granite peaks that feel straight out of a postcard.

Pull over at the overlook if you want a photo. Trust me, you’ll want one.

9:00 AM – Breakfast at Stanley’s Legendary Bakery

You’ve arrived in Stanley. Head straight to Stanley Baking Co. & Cafe. There will probably be a line. Don’t worry though, the line takes a bit but the food comes out speedy.

Locals and travelers alike gather here every morning for giant breakfasts, fresh baked goods, and their famous Oatcakes. Order anything that looks good (which is basically everything) and grab a seat outside with a view of the Sawtooths.

10:45 AM – Time for Whitewater Rafting on the Salmon River

After breakfast it’s time for the main event! Drive a block over to Sawtooth Adventure Company, where your rafting guides will get you geared up and ready to go. Hint hint, park over at Sawtooth Adventure Co before breakfast so you have a parking spot and now can just walk to and from the bakery.

You’ll be heading out on the Classic Raft with Lunch, one of the most popular rafting trips near Sun Valley. And for good reason.

11:00 AM – Shuttle to the River

Hop on the shuttle and head down to the river “put-in” on the one and only, Salmon River!

Soon you’ll be pushing off into clear water surrounded by towering pine forests and mountain peaks.

12:00 PM – Splashing Through Class II & III Rapids

The river starts to pick up pace.

1:30 PM – Jump Rock

1:45 PM – Push your guide in

Around this time of day, you might find yourself in a calm deep section of river and maybe your guide is daydreaming or telling you a story… now is your chance. Push your guide in, just do it.

2:00 PM – Riverside Lunch

After all that paddling, lunch somehow tastes even better.

Your guides pull over for a fresh riverside lunch -yummy wraps & salads, snacks, and the highlight: warm Dutch oven cake for dessert.

4:30 PM – Back to Stanley

After lunch, the trip wraps up and the shuttle brings you back to Stanley.

5:00 PM – Sunset & Dinner at Redfish Lake

As our CDL Raft Bus Driver, you’ll be an essential part of our guest experience, safely transporting rafting guests and guides to and from the river in a school bus while towing a trailer loaded with rafting equipment. This is a full-time seasonal position working 6 days per week.

Responsibilities:

• Safely operate a school bus with a raft trailer on mountain roads
• Assist with loading and unloading equipment (lifting required)
• Operate a Digital Camera for guest rapid photos
• Provide a friendly, professional experience for guests and staff

Requirements:

• Clean driving record required. We will train and pay for CDL
• Strong customer service skills
• Team player with the ability to make real time decisions and be flexible

Morning: Lakeside Stillness and Crisp Mountain Air

Your day can begin early at Redfish Lake Lodge if you so please, where the mountain air is crisp and the lake lies still like glass. Step outside just after sunrise and you’ll be rewarded with a soft glow stretching across the water, the Sawtooth Mountains,  reflecting perfectly on the calm surface. Grab a hot coffee from the lodge and take a quiet walk along the shoreline. If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a kayak or paddle board and glide across the lake before the midday winds pick up. There’s something magical about being out on the water with nothing but mountains surrounding you. The lodge serves a great breakfast which you can enjoy while looking at the beautiful scenery the lake has to offer! You could also get your coffee to go at Two Guns and go for a walk along the walkway beside the lake.

Mid-morning: Adventure in the Sawtooth Mountains

By late morning, it’s time to explore beyond the lodge. Redfish Lake is a gateway to some of Idaho’s most stunning hiking trails. Whether you’re looking for a casual stroll or a more challenging trek, there’s a path for everyone! One popular option is the hike to Fishhook Creek or a trek toward Alpine Lake. Wildflowers blanket the meadows in summer, and the scent of pine follows you along the trail. Keep your camera ready, every turn seems to offer a postcard-worthy view. You can ask the Redfish Visitor Center for any information, they are so helpful!

If hiking isn’t your style, hop on the lodge’s boat shuttle to the far end of the lake. It’s a scenic ride that opens up access to even more remote trails and quiet picnic spots.

Another fun option is to rent all the fun toys the marina has to offer. Kayaks, paddle boards, and more! Here’s a tip, jump off the dock behind the marina desk, its so refreshing!

Afternoon: Relaxation and Lakeside Fun

After a morning of adventure, the afternoon is perfect for unwinding. Head back to the lodge and claim a spot on the beach. Families gather here to swim, build sandcastles, and lounge under the sun, while others stretch out with a book and soak in the views. 

You can also rent a pontoon boat for a leisurely cruise around the lake, taking in the dramatic scenery from every angle.

On Sundays, toward the late afternoon there is free music on the lawn. Bring a picnic blanket and a chair and enjoy the music and vibes!

Here’s a tip, get lunch at the Lakeside Gazebo. The fish tacos are delicious. The ice cream is a must. And don’t skip out on the slushy margaritas… if your into that sort of thing

Evening: Dining with a View

As the sun begins to dip behind the mountains, the lodge takes on a warm, golden glow. This is the perfect time to settle in for dinner at the on-site restaurant, Limberts. With large windows overlooking the lake, every table feels like the best seat in the house.

Fresh, hearty meals paired with the surrounding views create an experience that’s as memorable as the landscape itself. After dinner, step outside to watch the sky shift from orange to deep blue, with stars slowly emerging overhead.

Here’s another tip… My favorite option though is the rustic lounge bar (must be 21+). Great drinks and I absolutely love the bar food menu. The brussel sprouts are so delicious… and when are brussels ever worth raving about?

Night: Campfire Stories and Starry Skies

End your day gathered around a campfire. The cool mountain air returns, and the crackle of the fire adds a cozy touch to the evening. Whether you’re sharing stories, roasting marshmallows, or simply enjoying the quiet, it’s the kind of moment that stays with you long after you leave.

With minimal light pollution, the night sky here is spectacular. Look up, and you’ll see countless stars stretching across the darkness. a reminder of just how far removed this place feels from everyday life.

How are Rapids Formed

Whitewater rapids form when fast-moving water interacts with the river’s natural features. As water rushes over the riverbed, collides with rocks, funnels through narrow channels, or drops over ledges, it creates movement, standing waves, hydraulics, and the frothy “whitewater” paddlers know well.

Thrill-Seeker

Class IV

Our Thrill-Seeker adventure is built for adrenaline seekers. Class IV rapids include larger waves, narrow passages, and multiple obstacles that require precise maneuvering.

These rapids are typically longer, steeper, and more technical — meaning powerful turns, lateral moves across current, and dynamic water features.

This is the ultimate whitewater rafting adventure for adrenaline junkies looking for a high-intensity river experience and unforgettable memories.

Best for:  Thrill-seekers ready for advanced whitewater and wanting to get their adrenaline pumpin’! No experience necessary…

Kayak Adventure

Class III

This is our most adventurous option. You’ll navigate Class III whitewater in your own kayak while a professional guide teaches fundamentals, river reading, and proper technique.

You’ll learn to paddle independently while gaining confidence in moderate whitewater conditions.

Best for: Adventurous individuals who want a hands-on whitewater kayaking experience.

8 AM Head north! A beautiful one-hour drive over Galena summit to Stanley, Idaho. Morning drive offer the best opportunity to see some Idaho wildlife including Elk, pronghorns, mountain goats, black bears and birds….amazaing array of birds. 

9:15 AM Grab and amazing breakfast at the world-renowned Stanley Baking Company and enjoy watching the little town of Stanley Idaho wake up to another fantastic day in the Sawtooth Valley

10:30 AM. A short stroll from the SBC is Sawtooth Adventure Company.  Stanley’s adventure HQ.  Join us for our Class III rafting trip with lunch.   Enjoy the thrill and serenity of the Salmon River, topped off with a deliciously catered riverside lunch. 

11 AM Load onto SAC’s famous fish bus and head downstream! Your guide will lead your family through  Class III rapids,  historical hikes and a stunning era and wrap up the day with a fresh catered lunch and out riverside camp.

3:30 pm Redfish Lake Lodge is the perfect place for a snack from the gazebo, or a happy hour at the Rustic. Spend some time taking in the absolutely stunning view of the Sawtooths From Redfish Lake Lodge

4 pm Time to head south, back over Galena Summit and onward to Sun Valley, Idaho.  

5:30 pm.  Back at the Sun Valley Lodge and ready for an evening of  dinners, symphony, Ice Show, or simply relaxing in the warm pool.
