Going virtual has many benefits such as:

Reducing the time it takes to upgrade or install a new server—in some instances by half

Saving thousands on your equipment costs—no more new servers; Low monthly hosting fees include almost a full T-1 of bandwidth

Alleviating the need for dedicated air conditioning to keep your servers cool—saving hundreds and even thousands of dollars on power costs

Reducing your carbon footprint and making you a more environmentally friendly company

Providing a “work from anywhere” office environment for employees even in the event of bad weather or municipal travel restrictions—or even potential pandemics like H1N1

Moving your operations into a carrier class data center with full redundant power, internet and state of the art security to enhance the success of disaster recovery efforts

In the current economy many small and medium sized businesses are looking for ways to cut costs. Heck, as a small business owner myself, I am always on the lookout for ways to help my bottom line. But I also feel a responsibility to my customers to help them save time and money. One of the best ways for small businesses to achieve efficiency is by using Managed Services. According to Wikipedia, “a managed services provider (MSP) is typically an IT services provider, who manages and assumes responsibility for providing a defined set of services to their clients. Common services provided by MSPs include remote network, desktop and security monitoring, patch management and remote data back-up, as well as technical assistance. Many MSPs now provide many of their services remotely over the Internet rather than having to perform on-site client visits, which is time consuming and often expensive. Most MSPs bill a flat or near-fixed monthly fee, which benefits their clients by providing them with predictable IT support costs.”

In my opinion, and as an IT services provider with more than fifteen years of experience, that last sentence is the most important, as roughly translated it means FLAT FEE. That means predictable costs for them, predictable revenue for me. And if you think about the quality of the service that goes along with that fee, it can be a pretty good deal. I have a lot of experience under this roof. I can tell customers how technology can help them improve their service delivery. For example, the current anxiety over the potential impact of the H1N1 virus can be mitigated with a “work from anywhere” model. Encryption software can bring you into compliance with new data security laws in states like Massachusetts. And a VOIP system can bring reduced costs and freedom from the desk to most team members. When making decisions in this new economic reality, think about where you can bundle vendor services into flat fee pricing—and then ask them for it.
