Come one, come fall. This month you can't flip though any glossy magazine without seeing the return of the trouser pant. Why not go bold while you're at it? I'll be pairing mine with a bright tank until the leaves start to turn.

This weekend we ignored the weather forecast and packed up the truck for an overnight camping trip. Over a few hills and through the woods, just twenty minutes from home, is our little hideaway among the Aspen trees. As of May, the Federal Government has decided that we aren’t allowed to camp past certain boundaries due to new preservation policies, so as we pulled into our turn-off we crossed our fingers that our non-compliance would be mercy ruled.

We pitched our tent just in time to sit in it for the next three hours. Luckily the Bittles were so excited to finally be let inside that they were easily entertained with a new snack every half an hour, a few of rounds of Zingo and tumbling into the thick pile of blankets, sleeping bags and pillows. They were so thrilled that they didn’t even notice Ben and I darting around the tent, sopping up slow leaks before they trailed across the plastic floor.

By the time the first rain cloud passed I was more than happy to let them run around in the mud, especially if it meant that I could catch a little nap before the next cloud rolled in. In between light drizzles, Ben prepared the evening’s fire and we went looking for wildflowers and fungi kingdoms, climbed on rocks we couldn’t reach last summer, played hide-and-go-seek as best you can with a two and four-year-old and snacked a little more before supper. As the s'more-effect wore off and the Bittles were finally asleep, Ben and I sat fireside listening to the crackles and watching the flames rise, making good use of the land that our ancestors conserved for us.
