Some, rather most organizations reject his CV today because he has changed jobs frequently (10 in 14 years).! My friend, the ˜job hopper™ (referred here as Mr. JH), does not mind it. well he does not need to mind it at all. Having worked full-time with 10 employer companies in just 14 years gives Mr. JH the relaxing edge that most of the ˜company loyal™ employees are struggling for today. Today, Mr. JH too is laid off like some other 14-15 year experienced guys " the difference being the latter have just worked in 2-3 organizations in the same number of years. Here are the excerpts of an interview with Mr. JH:

Q: Why have you changed 10 jobs in 14 years?

A: To get financially sound and stable before getting laid off the second time.

Q: So you knew you would be laid off in the year 2009?

A: Well I was laid off first in the year 2002 due to the first global economic slowdown. I had not got a full-time job before January 2003 when the economy started looking up; so I had struggled for almost a year without job and with compromises.

Q: Which number of job was that?
A: That was my third job.

Q: So from Jan 2003 to Jan 2009, in 6 years, you have changed 8 jobs to make the count as 10 jobs in 14 years?

A: I had no other option. In my first 8 years of professional life, I had worked only for 2 organizations thinking that jobs are deserved after lot of hard work and one should stay with an employer company to justify the saying ˜employer loyalty™. But I was an idiot.

Q: Why do you say so?

A: My salary in the first 8 years went up only marginally. I could not save enough and also, I had thought that I had a ˜permanent™ job, so I need not worry about ˜what will I do if I lose my job™. I could never imagine losing a job because of economic slowdown and not because of my performance. That was January 2002.

Q: Can you brief on what happened between January 2003 and 2009.

A: Well, I had! learnt my lessons of being ˜company loyal™ and not ˜money earning and saving loyal™. But then you can save enough only when you earn enough. So I shifted my loyalty towards money making and saving " I changed 8 jobs in 6 years assuring all my interviewers about my stability.

Q: So you lied to your interviewers; you had already planned to change the job for which you were being interviewed on a particular day?

A: Yes, you can change jobs only when the market is up and companies are hiring. You tell me " can I get a job now because of the slowdown? No. So one should change jobs for higher salaries only when the market is up because that is the only time when companies hire and can afford the expected salaries.

Q: What have you gained by doing such things?

A: That's the question I was waiting for. In Jan 2003, I had a fixed salary (without variables) of say Rs. X p.a. In January 2009, my salary was 8X. So as! suming my salary was Rs.3 lakh p.a. in Jan 2003, my last drawn salary in Jan 2009 was Rs.24 lakh p.a. (without variable). I never bothered about variable as I had no intention to stay for 1 year and go through the appraisal process to wait for the company to give me a hike.

Q: So you decided on your own hike?

A: Yes, in 2003, I could see the slowdown coming again in future like it had happened in 2001-02. Though I was not sure by when the next slowdown would come, I was pretty sure I wanted a ˜debt-free™ life before being laid off again. So I planned my hike targets on a yearly basis without waiting for the year to complete.

Q: So are you debt-free now?

A: Yes, I earned so much by virtue of job changes for money and spent so little that today I have a loan free 2 BR flat (1200 sq.. feet) plus a loan free big car without bothering about any EMIs. I am laid off too but I do not complain at all. If I have laid off companies for mo! ney, it is OK if a company lays me off because of lack of money.

Q: Who is complaining?

A: All those guys who are not getting a job to pay their EMIs off are complaining. They had made fun of me saying I am a job hopper and do not have any company loyalty. Now I ask them what they gained by their company loyalty; they too are laid off like me and pass comments to me " why will you bother about us, you are already debt-free. They were still in the bracket of 12-14 lakh p.a. when they were laid off.

Q: What is your advice to professionals?

A: Like Narayan Murthy had said " love your job and not your company because you never know when your company will stop loving you. In the same lines, love yourself and your family needs more than the company's needs. Companies can keep coming and going; family will always remain the same. Make money for yourself first and simultaneously make money for the company, not the other way around.

Q: What is your biggest pain point with companies?

A: When a company does well, its CEO will address the entire company saying, ˜well done guys, it is YOUR company, keep up the hard work, I am with you. But when the slowdown happens and the company does not do so well, the same CEO will say, It is MY company and to save the company, I have to take tough decisions including asking people to go. So think about your financial stability first; when you get laid off, your kids will complain to you and not your boss.

There are so many blog posts/articles over the internet about the project management, and am also not going to write something different but I will try to highlight some of those areas which are really important and every PM's should know about it.. this is just a beginning

As we step through the project planning process at the beginning of the engagement, we are often going through the motions without really stopping to think about each step along the way. Indeed, some of these may never make it into a master project schedule, but they really should. And some of these steps that I'm about to identify are general in nature and may not be applicable to every type of project, every organization and industry, and every size project – but they actually could be (should be?). Let's look at these likely basic project planning steps in a little more detail….

Define the problem to be solved by the project.

At the kick-off of the project we must, of course, define the actual problem to be solved. It is likely that the customer will have attempted to do this before coming to us with the project – or they did this with Sales or an account manager. It is still our job as project managers to help them define this further – possibly even get to the REAL problem – after the project is dropped in our hands to work.

Develop a mission statement

Develop a mission state, followed by statements of major objectives. This is important as it tends to set the project off on the right path and bring cohesion to the project team as they come to a mutual understanding of the path and goals of the project. Be sure the project really satisfies the customer's needs, rather than being what the team thinks the customer should get.

Develop a project strategy that will meet all project objectives

The team must strategize as to how they will work the project with the customer and how they will satisfy the end goals of the project successfully and to the customer's satisfaction.

Write a scope statement to define project boundaries

The scope – what will and will not be done on the project should be part of the project plan. Write a project scope statement that draws some obvious boundaries around what work is to be included on the engagement.

Develop a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)

Creating the work breakdown structure detailing all the tasks and sub-tasks that will go into production of the final, implemented solution is a critical piece of the project planning process. Even though it is something that will change somewhat over time, it is the basis for everything going forward – the project schedule, resource planning, task assignments, etc. Using the WBS, estimate activity durations, resource requirements, and costs (as appropriate for your environment).

Prepare the project master schedule and budget

Develop – or modify if you already have one from Sales or the account manager – the master project schedule. Include the tasks identified in the work breakdown structure and assign resources or at least resource positions if the actual resource names have not been identified yet.

Decide on the project organization structure

Document the proposed project organization structure as part of the project planning process. Identify whether it will be a matrix or hierarchical reporting structure.

Set up the shared project collaboration location

Whether you're using Sharepoint, a shared drive somewhere on the company's intranet, Facebook, a collaborative project management software tool or some other device, set it up at this point and start populating it with many of the documents and info that is going into this planning process.

Get the plan signed off by all project stakeholders

Finally, put the formal project plan through a formal review process on your project team, possibly senior management if it's a visible enough project, and definitely the customer. Get a formal approval signoff from the customer and store the document with all other project materials.

2. What's so special about him?

He built a village Ralegaon Siddhi in Ahamad Nagar district, Maharashtra

3. So what?

This village is a self-sustained model village. Energy is produced in the village itself from solar power, biofuel and wind mills.

In 1975, it used to be a poverty clad village. Now it is one of the richest village in India. It has become a model for self-sustained, eco-friendly & harmonic village.

4. Ok,...?

This guy, Anna Hazare was awarded Padma Bhushan and is a known figure for his social activities.

5. Really, what is he fighting for?

He is supporting a cause, the amendment of a law to curb corruption in India.

6. How that can be possible?

He is advocating for a Bil, The Lok Pal Bill (The Citizen Ombudsman Bill), that will form an autonomous authority who will make politicians (ministers), beurocrats (IAS/IPS) accountable for their deeds.

8. It's an entirely new thing right..?

In 1972, the bill was proposed by then Law minister Mr. Shanti Bhushan. Since then it has been neglected by the politicians and some are trying to change the bill to suit thier theft (corruption).

7. Oh.. He is going on a hunger strike for that whole thing of passing a Bill ! How can that be possible in such a short span of time?

The first thing he is asking for is: the government should come forward and announce that the bill is going to be passed.

Next, they make a joint committee to DRAFT the LOK PAL BILL. 50% goverment participation and 50% public participation. Because you cant trust the government entirely for making such a bill which does not suit them.

8. Fine, What will happen when this bill is passed?

A LokPal will be appointed at the centre. He will have an autonomous charge, say like the Election Commission of India. In each and every state, Lokayukta will be appointed. The job is to bring all alleged party to trial in case of corruptions within 1 year. Within 2 years, the guilty will be punished. Not like, Bofors scam or Bhopal Gas Tragedy case, that has been going for last 25 years without any result.

9. Is he alone? Whoelse is there in the fight with Anna Hazare?

Baba Ramdev, Ex. IPS Kiran Bedi, Social Activist Swami Agnivesh, RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal and many more.

Prominent personalities like Aamir Khan is supporting his cause.

10. Ok, got it. What can I do?

At least we can spread the message. How?

Putting status message, links, video, changing profile pics.

At least we can support Anna Hazare and the cause for uprooting corruption from India.

At least we can hope that his Hunger Strike does not go in vain.

At least we can pray for his good health.

Outsourcing…

Our first nature – our first choice – is to perform work within our own organization. It’s what we’re used to, it’s where our product and project expertise lies, and it’s usually the path of least contest.

Next in line is the concept of brining in outside consultants to work on the project as needed. For example, you may need a particular solution architect on your project and everyone in your organization with that expertise is booked on another engagement. Since you need the work performed now…not in two months…you bring in an outside expert for, say, five weeks to get the task completed and you move on.

The third choice is to outsource, and that is what this article is about.

There may be times in the life of your projects or during your project management career, where the best alternative is to outsource an entire portion of the project to an outside vendor to perform, say, all of the infrastructure or development related work or all of the testing of the system prior to user acceptance testing.

Let’s look at this option…

Outsourcing Services

An alternative to using consultants is outsourcing, by which an independent vendor provides a service and assumes responsibility for the results. For example, a project manager might outsource the delivery of a deliverable or component of the product being built.

Outsourcing has its advantages. It can help shift the project of difficult, complex deliverables to expertise that does not exist on the team. It can shift additional deliverables to outside vendors so that the team can focus on critical matters. Finally, it can allow for flexibility in responding to a fast-paced environment, since less is invested in a project infrastructure and the outsourcing can be cancelled without investing too much.

Outsourcing has its disadvantages, too. The potential for losing control may be high. The work can cost more in the beginning. And it takes time to find a reliable outsourcing vendor.

To ensure that you make a good outsourcing decision:

1. Do an analysis to control if outsourcing is a better option than having the team do the work.
2. Select from several outsourcing vendors. Compare each one, not just on a COST basis but also on REPUTABILITY of work and service.
3. Identify what is too critical to outsource. A bad outsourcing decision can have terrible results on the entire project.
4. Identify what you can outsource. Often, these are services or deliverables not essential to the outcome of the project.
5. If outsourcing something critical, then ensure that reviews and audits are stipulated in the contract. Actually, the rights for reviews and audits should be incorporated in the contract as a general rule, but especially for critical services or deliverables.

I have strange habits that I create for myself to repeat the pattern every day, so it either makes me happy or the repetition puts me in a schedule that increases my efficiency.

•I always wake up to a cup of tea.

•When I go through uncertainty about some decision I start meditating (well, am still practicing to be more perfect doing it), it calms me down.It stays with me for months or weeks depending on my on-going life and its schedule.

•I have a nightly routine that I hold on to read magazines and listen to music or sometime watch Movie before I go to bed. Movies are mostly either “Comedy” or “Drama”, something that inspires you but also relaxes the mind, nothing serious.

•I am more regular writing blog posts when I maintain my schedule of doing it every Saturday or during weekdays early morning between 6-9 am.

•I don’t watch a lot of Television but it’s usually on most of the time while I get around doing all other things. I love watching Discovery Channel, NAT GEO and Mtv.

•I take risks, lots of them. I like change and new things in life- whether it’s a haircut or shuffling the interiors of my home J

•I love reading quotations.

•If there’s a job alternative I would love to have is to travel and write. I love architecture and interiors as much as I love nature.

•I love to work. I like the interaction with people, observing people and putting my head down and getting something down. I go cranky if I don’t work for too long.

•Things I absolutely must always have- internet

•My friend circle is very small, close and connected and they inspire me every day.

•Surprised by the fact that you can develop friendship with people over social media and without meeting them in person a lot.

So, What is your company password policy !! to change password in a month, or so?

In fact every company has policies and standards to aware users not to share your password to anyone.. or rather simple password which can be guessed by anyone!!!

If your company is like mine, you need to change your password every month or so.

Next time, don't just create something easy to remember that fits the IT department's secret requirements. Think of something that will motivate you.

When I was considering writing, my password was "Writer50", a reminder that if I really thought I could be an author J I had better publish a book by the time I turned 50.

Google Mail Outage Leaves 120,000+ Users Stranded

If you use Gmail, and your Google mail didn’t work starting yesterday, you may be one of the 120,000 or so users left stranded by a Gmail outage. Engadget has more:

If you’ve got a working Gmail account, you might want to back it up every so often — as many as 500,000 Gmail users lost access to their inboxes this morn, and some of them are reporting (via Twitter and support forums) that years worth of messages, attachments and Google Chat logs had vanished by the time they were finally able to log on. While we haven’t experienced the issue personally, we’re hearing that the bug effectively reset some accounts, treating their owners as new users complete with welcome messages.

Google engineers wrote that fewer than 0.08% of users were affected. They’re still working on fixing the bug.

eWeek writes that this kind of outage happens every year for Gmail:

Gmail outages are an annual issue for Google, which provides e-mail for millions of consumers andbusinesses via its sprawling cloud computing cluster of servers and storage arrays.

However, after some nerve-wracking outages both in 2008 and 2009, 2010 was a pretty good year for Gmail in terms of uptime.

In 2010, Gmail delivered uptime of 99.984 percent for business and consumer users. That translates to 7 minutes of downtime per month over the last year, or small delays of a few seconds.

If you use Gmail, the aptly named freeware program Gmail Backup is a good way to back up your account. (The site is down at time of writing, presumably from too many downloads.)

The vMotion Reality

The quite popular GigaOm site recently published an article titled “The VMotion Myth”, in which the author, Alex Benik, debunks the myth of vMotion and the live migration of virtual machines (VMs).
In his article, Benik states that the ability to dynamically move workloads around inside a single data center or between two data centers is, in his words, “far from an operational reality today”. While I’ll grant you that inter-data center vMotion isn’t the norm, vMotion within a data center is very much an operational reality of today. I believe that Benik’s article is based on some incorrect information and incomplete viewpoints, and I’d like to clear things up a bit.
To quote from Benik’s article:

Currently, moving a VM from a one physical machine to another has two important constraints. First, both machines must share the same storage back end, typically a Fibre Channel/iSCSI SAN or network-attached storage. Second, the physical machines must reside in the same VLAN or subnet. This means that inside a single data center, one can only move a VM across a relatively small number of physical machines. Not exactly what the marketing guys would have you believe.

Benik is correct in that shared storage is required in order to use vMotion. The use of shared storage in VMware environments is quite common for this very reason. Note also that shared storage is required in order to leverage other VMware-specific functionality such as VMware High Availability (HA), VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS), and VMware Fault Tolerance (FT).
On the second point—regarding VLAN requirements—Benik is not entirely correct. You see, by their very nature VMware ESX/ESXi hosts tend to have multiple network interfaces. The majority of these network interfaces, in particular those that carry the traffic to and from VMs, are what are called trunk ports. Trunk ports are special network interfaces that carry multiple VLANs at the same time. Because these network interfaces carry multiple VLANs simultaneously, VMware ESX/ESXi hosts can support VMs on multiple VLANs simultaneously. (For a more exhaustive discussion of VLANs with VMware ESX/ESXi, see this collection of networking articles I’ve written.)
But that’s only part of the picture. It is true that there is one specific type of interface on a VMware ESX/ESXi host that must reside in the same VLAN on all the hosts between which live migration is required. This port is a VMkernel interface that has been enabled for vMotion. Without sharing connectivity between VMkernel interfaces on the same VLAN, vMotion cannot take place. I suppose it is upon this that Benik bases his statement.
However, the requirement that a group of physical systems share a common VLAN on a single interface is hardly a limitation. First, let’s assume that you are using an 8:1 consolidation ratio; this is an extremely conservative ratio considering that most servers have 8 cores (thus resulting in a 1:1 VM-to-core ratio). Still, assuming an 8:1 consolidation ratio and a maximum of 253 VMware ESX/ESXi hosts on a single Class C IP subnet, that’s enough physical systems to drive over 2,000 VMs (2,024 VMs, to be precise). And remember that these 2,024 VMs can be distributed across any number of VLANs themselves because the network interfaces that carry their traffic are capable of supporting multiple VLANs simultaneously. This means that the networking group can continue to use VLANs for breaking up broadcast domains and segmenting traffic, just like they do in the physical world.
Bump the consolidation ratio up to 16:1 (still only 2:1 VM-to-core ratio on an 8 core server) and the number of VMs that can be supported with a single VLAN for vMotion is over 4,000. How is this a limitation again? Somehow I think that we’d need to pay more attention to CPU, RAM, and storage usage before being concerned about the fact that vMotion requires Layer 2 connectivity between hosts. And this isn’t even taking into consideration that organizations might want multiple vMotion domains!
Clearly, the “limitation” that a single interface on each physical host share a common VLAN isn’t a limitation at all. Yes, it is a design consideration to keep in mind. But I would hardly consider it a limitation and I definitely don’t think that it’s preventing customers from using vMotion in their data centers today. No, Mr. Benik, there’s no vMotion myth—only vMotion reality.

Adura pegged building operators’ pain by offering a solution that increases a space’s energy efficiency with minimal retrofitting, new switches, or reconstruction. With Adura’s technology, you can use the same switch to turn off the lights in one part of a room while turning them on in another part. Chicago paper company GPA has devised a way to produce paper without trees or water. Instead, it uses calcium carbonate and limestone-derived mineral powders to make the paper, which it then binds with resin and polyethylene. Dubbed Ultra Green paper, the product is cheaper than synthetic paper, more weatherproof, doesn’t yellow, and is even antimicrobial. Despite this plastic-like durability, GPA claims the paper is as printable as that made from trees. Energy savings and favorable features make Ultra Green a product to watch out for.

Indiana-based Waterfurnace manufactures and installs geothermal heating and air-conditioning systems. The system uses an underground loop to either suck in or siphon out heat from buildings. The system’s pump, compressor, and fan require little energy to operate, are easy to maintain, and don’t break easily. The company employs a just-in-time manufacturing system to keep prices competitive, making it an increasingly attractive alternative to the usual energy hog furnace and A/C setups.

16. Solix

Colorado’s Solix builds bioreactors that produce biofuel made from algae. Its bioreactors maximize energy to the point of cutting production costs a whopping 90-95%. Algae fuel isn’t competitive on the market quite yet, but Solix’s technology, which can produce 1,500 gallons of fuel per acre annually, aims to make it so. Commercial production is still about five years away, but keep an eye out for Solix if and when algae does hit the market.

Imara produces long-lasting, eco-friendly lithium-ion batteries. Traditional nickel-cadmium batteries cause cancer, while lead-acid batteries poison landfills when they’re not recycled properly. Lithium-ion batteries, which you may know from your laptop and cell phone, last far longer than the other two types of battery, and are easier to reuse in manufacturing once drained. Imara’s batteries run longer than the competition. They are also powerful enough to use in a broad variety of markets. Unlike most other batteries, which are manufactured in Asia, Imara batteries are made in California, giving them a leg up in the energy independence movement.

14. Integrity Block

Integrity Block, based in Silicon Valley, manufactures a soil composite-based building block with the same strength, load bearing capacity and price as a standard concrete block. It takes 40% less energy to make Integrity Block than it does concrete; the stuff also contains 50% pre-recycled material. The company markets its block to builders interested in using green, sustainable, eco-friendly materials to get LEED credits. So far, people are biting.

Cool Earth Solar circumvents traditional solar panels by producing balloons that harvest solar energy. This divergent technology puts the company at a potential advantage: Traditional rooftop solar panels don’t put out enough electric power for high-population urban areas. Cool Earth’s balloon technology delivers gigawatts of bang for its buck, using cost-efficient materials and far fewer building resources than panels. It can meet demand quickly and without subsidization. Not bad, for a balloon.

Ecology Coatings sells UV-curable nanotechnology coatings for paper, plastic, and metal products. It’s not a glamorous business, but the concept is essential. Most product protective coatings—almost every manufactured product has one—use solvents or carriers that aren’t safe or environmentally friendly when mixed and applied to products. Ecology Coatings came up with an eco-friendly solution by marketing its Liquid Nanotechnology coating. The inexpensive coatings cure under a UV light, allowing for clean mass production without the environmental risk.

Makani Power, still in stealth mode, uses patented “membrane structures” to harness high-altitude wind power. Think of its product as a gigantic, eco-functional kite. The kite gets launched several miles into the air and captures high-altitude winds, which are more dependable than winds closer to the ground. Not surprisingly, the company is staffed by a fair number of kitesurfers. Google has invested $11 million into Makani.

“Clean coal” is something of an oxymoron. But Cambridge, Mass.-based GreatPoint Energy has figured out how to make this tricky concept work. It uses catalytic gasification technology to transform coal into natural gas. The company claims that once its plants are operational, it will be able to produce natural gas from coal at below-market prices. It can also capture and sell the carbon dioxide, mercury, and sulfur emitted during the process. GreatPoint is clean, green, and with serious potential.

PayPal cofounder Elon Musk is on a roll with his latest venture. Tesla Motors designs an all-electric roadster that goes from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds, and zips around at up to a governed 125 miles per hour. The car only costs $0.02/mile to power, but its price tag is in the hundreds of thousands. Nonetheless, the eco-hip rich of Silicon Valley and Los Angeles have snapped up the roadsters like hotcakes. Tesla’s next car, the Model S, is slated to be released in 2010. Its comparatively modest $60,000 price tag puts it up against luxury sedans like the Audi A6. Tesla also has successful divisions that sell battery packs, powertrains, and solar chargers.

California-based Calera specializes in carbon capture and storage. In lay terms, that means diverting carbon dioxide emissions from factory smokestacks and running them through calcium- and magnesium-rich seawater to create cement. The CO2 gets turned into carbonates, making cement instead of polluting the atmosphere. Calera wants to replace Portland cement—120+ million metric tons of which the US uses in roads, sidewalks, and buildings a year—with its more eco-friendly product. If allowed to piggyback on coal and natural gas plants in the United States, Calera could do some major carbon cleaning cum cement production.
