RAIL NETWORK IN TATTERS

Hello and Welcome Back... Listening to the news that the Telstra outage has affected the ARTC Rail Network that uses 4G signals.

What a joke.

There was nothing wrong with the 400mhz rail network (450.050Mhz) that never had frobems during the 80s, 90s, and beyond but no, millions of dollars had to be spent on putting a mobile type network based on mobile phone infrastructure with a comms pole every 1km required.

I enjoyed listening to the rail network when my dad was a train driver based at Campbelltown, NSW and would hear his radio go off in the middle of the night because he forgot to switch it off.

I could also pick it up on my scanner, but no more, as for some reason, it had to go on a crappy phone network for comms..

I weep for the future..

UNIDEN 396XT (Only) - MULTI PROGRAMMED FILE (Download File Via Freescan)

Hello and Thank You for purchasing the Master file to program your radio = UBCD396XT ONLY

First thing is to wipe/reset your radio. (If you haven't done so already)

Why?

Because when Uniden shipped out your radio, it was programmed with frequencies from NZ and Australia... we don't need this.

To reset your radio,

0. Turn off your radio

0. Hold down the following keys

0. 2, 9, HOLD

0. Turn on while pressing these 3 buttons

Load Preset will show... press “NO”

Now that your scanner is as fresh as the day you got it, you will want to plug it into your computer and fire up the Freescan (download here = https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1MiF8fLqLSgPahH5Sjy8q85UGPgrbsfmk

After the software is up and running, we need to be able to talk to your radio, to do this you need to plug your radio into your computer while the program is running.

Plug your radio into a USB port

Select Comm Port and click on ‘Auto Detect’.. your scanner should show, highlight on scanner in the ‘Comm Port Auto Detect’ an click on ‘Set Select Available Port’

The Com port should now be set

Your radio is now talking to your computer

Exit out of Com port setting

If The software did not start 'Auto Dectect' with your scanner

You may need to unplug and plug back in your radio if no detection is found, even try turning the scanner on and off, each time pressing autodetect once you plugged your radio back into the computer.

Also check the Baud rate is set to 115200 (also check this in Scanner Settings)

Also check this in your scanner settings, click on the button on the side of Scanner (Menu) and go to settings, using the top knob, scroll till ‘Set Serial Port’ press yes, and change to 115200 press yes to exit, then menu side button to exit.

Also closing and reopening the software program also helps.

May take a few go's ... be patient

Sometimes it works first go, sometimes it can take 15mins, just depends on the scanner.

Once your radio is talking to the software, you can now download your master database file and save to your computer

Make sure that EVERYTHING IS TICKED, once done, click on the “Start Upload” button.... it can take around 10-15mins to download to the 396T and about 5mins for the 396XT

Press the Close button once done..

IMPROVE YOUR SCANNING EXPERIENCE

ANTENNA UPGRADE = the rubber antenna that came with your radio is not very good. These radios love a strong signal to work properly so it highly recommended. For a good budget antenna with 3db gain on UHF, I use and recommend these antennas from Secomms (15) = https://secomms.com.au/product/nl701-uniden-upgrade-antenna/ For something with a bit more quality, I use these antennas = Diamond SRH771 from Strictly Ham for $39... RECHARGEABLE BATTERYS.. Radios with PSN require a good power source as it’s intensive processing required.. I use and recommend Panasonic Eneloop Pro (2450mh) that are made in Japan...Cost is $40-50 for a pack of 4 on EBay (I used Gadgetcity in Merrylands, NSW)
Don’t turn your radio over volume 8 for long periods.. it will burn out the speaker

TIMELORD17 - LEARNING TO FLY (Story Behind The Video)

Hello and Welcome Back... For those who don't know, not only do I run this site (NSW Radio & Communications) but I also run another site, that being a music website called Electronic80s /Soundz80s.

This site has 2 parts, one side 80s music and the other side is 'Today's Music that Sounds Like it Came From The 80's = Soundz80s

I am also a music producer going under the name 'Timelord17' where I get to craft various tasty sounds (mostly 80s) using lush 80s synths & drum machines

My latest single blends 2 of my favorite things, 'music & aviation' the song is called 'Learning To Fly'

There are 2 versions of this most wicked song, 1st version is a 'Synth Rock' track and the other, a 'Slow Lush' Version (Higher Than Before Version)

The second version is where my love of aviation comes in. Being a slower song, I was looking for video to match the lushness this song so I reached out to my local airport, namely the 'Australian International Aviation College' in Port Macquarie on the mid north coast..

While they didn't have any video, they did offer me a introductory flight to be able to film my own footage.

I was chuffed. I have never been in a small light aircraft before so I was a little nervous. The plane that I would be going in is a Diamond DA40 (VH-A13) and the flying instructor was named 'Ben'.

The Beast (above)

Getting into this small airplane, it was comfortable and well displayed being a fairly new craft. The diesel engine kicked into life as we taxied along the runway. Takeoff was exhilarating, you wouldnt think such a small engine could produce the thrust need but it does, and it feels amazing, as the world below me got smaller and smaller.

As we skirted the coast, around 40mins into the flight, the question was asked, 'Do You Want to have a Go?'

WOW, Mind blown as I was already fairly nervous. I took control of the stick and my instructor calmly let this magnificent aircraft into my hands. First thing you notice is how heavy the 'steering' is but after a few mins, it becomes easier as I changed from a death grip on the stick to a more comfortable grip as 'VH-A13' glided through the sky. I even got to do a 180 turn, nice and easy maneuvers while watching the altitude and direction is surprising easy. Nice and gentle while watching the horizon is the advice.

Must say, beats the hell out of Flight-sim on computers..

The tight turns and the feeling of drifting up & down due to turbulence is next level. Has to be experienced to be believed, seriously, if you love using flight sims and want to feel the real thing, give the college a call (ask for Kate) and they will look after you.. AIRBAND RADIOS - WORTH A LISTEN (VHF Only)

Hello and Welcome Back... I'm a huge fan of Aviation, and over the years, I have used various radios to listen to VHF aircraft with.

While most aviation dedicated radios are fairly expensive, I have come across 3 main radios that I use for listening to my local airport.

So I thought I would list my Favorite '3 radios' that are worthy of years of Aviation listening.

1. YAESU VX-6

This was a surprise. Built solid with a metal body, the Yaesu VX-6 is a Amateur Radio that does Shortwave, Marine band, Amateur radio bands (obviously) and Airband.

Unlike the cheap Baofengs that claim to receive Airband, the Yaesu VX-6 is clear and loud in reception and volume

It comes with a rechargeable battery and can be used with 2 AA battery's if need be (will need to buy battery cradle).

For antenna, I'm using a dedicated airband antenna that i picked up from somewhere (i think it was South Eastern Communications) but any SMA-male antenna will fit.

Highly recommend this radio..

edit - backlit keypad & 'busy' light is a excellent touch (above)

2. UNIDEN 396XT

While the Uniden 396XT may no longer pick up PSN, (Public Safety Network) it still is a excellent scanner radio for Airband. The radios sensitivity on AM is excellent and is powered by 3 AA batterys. I recommend the Panasonic Enloop Pro (2450mh) for many hours of listening.

Antenna I use is a Nagoya NA701 / 771 from John at Secomms (South Eastern Communications). The receive is clear & loud.

Highly Recommend..

edit - Don't turn the volume up over 8, you will burn out the speaker and they are a pain to replace.

UNIDEN 436PT

My current go-to scanner for everything inc PSN, DMR, NXDN, & Airband. The sensitivity is excellent on AM unlike the SDS100 which is well documented as being 'deaf' on analog (AM). Pair this radio with a good set of battery's (Panasonic Enloop Pro (2450mh)) and a decent antenna like the 'Diamond SRH771', 'Diamond SRH519', 'Nagoya NA771' or 'Nagoya NA701' and you have a almost bulletproof radio with excellent receive on all bands.

edit - screen is highly reflected and is not good in direct sunlight. Don't turn volume up over 8, you will burn the speaker out.

So, There you have it.. My list of my fav 3 radios that I use for Airband listening..

STRATA LIVING - ANTENNA SUGGESTIONS

Hello and Welcome Back.. Back when I was living in the Blue Mountains, the world was my oyster in regards to Scanner Antenna placement.

I had a 3 stage pole that I bolted to the existing TV antenna pole and it worked extremely well. Funny enough, having the pole extended into its full 3 sections didn't work as well as only having 2 sections setup and using the roof as a groundplane.

The other antenna's were on the metal deck roof and also worked very. I was able to hear V8 Supercars comms at Eastern Creek from Valley Heights.. Not Bad

But sadly, with our greedy landlord who kept jacking the price up $50 each 6 months, it was time to move..

And so, here I am on the Mid North Coast, Love the weather here. Only 5-7 mins to the beach depending on traffic but there was one thing I hadn't factored in when I moved...

Its a strata villa, meaning you can't have antenna's everywhere without someone complaining..

The villa that I live in is governed by Strata, meaning you have to ask everyone in the complex via Strata if you want to do anything.. Its a pain in the arse, but here we are.

So, how do I still enjoy my hobby without my villa looking like a Nato base without alerting the neighbours.

Although directional, its a great start to see whats out there.. Here on the Mid North Coast, the antenna setup is via 2 sets of antenna's. A vertical VHF and a horizontal UHF. Can you guess what antenna is transmitting right next door to the TV antenna broadcast?

If you said PSN, (Public Safety Network) you would be right, and a heap of other goodies..

2. Roof Cavity

The roof cavity is where I have my main antenna. Its a 'Bandspanner' type antenna that sits on a Hi-Mount Camera tripod with the coax following the TV antenna coax. I have disconnected one of the 6 TV antenna sockets and run the scanner coax into one of the TV connector sockets. Nice & Neat.

It works very well. The only small downfall is the roof cavity is lined with silver foil type insulation but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference.

3. Deck Frame

This was a surprise. I was looking to expand on my pickup range and noticed that my back deck is metal, including the roof, gate and fencing. Using just a center peace of the coax I connected one side to a screw in the deck and the other to a BNC connector.

I was very surprised the range I was getting especially on Air-band and Shortwave. I still can hit all PSN sites except for 1 but even with the rooftop antenna, it only gets 2 bar signals.

On Shortwave, my Malahit DSP2 comes alive picking up around the world, I might try and do a video to show how good a metal patio deck antenna is.

edit - just noticed that the framework of the deck is connected to the guttering, so its probably using the guttering as an antenna as well :)

4. Gutter / Fence

The other way for a inconspicuous antenna is using the metal gutter frame. There's a guy on Youtube that connects his radio up to almost anything metal to use as an antenna, and most times, it transmits and receives some distance away.. Food for thought.

Other options are using the metal outdoor railing if you live in a unit or mounting a antenna near a window ledge.

So just because you are restricted to Strata or a living in a Unit, most times, if its metal, you can still enjoy scanning as a hobby, you just have to get creative.

One thing now is, I don't freak out now when there's a thunderstorm. I was always worried that the large antenna on a fairly high metal pole would get struck by lighting as it had already struck a tree in the front yard..

Rescue Helicopters are the backbone of Emergency Services giving fast, reliable transport while offering the same service you would expect from an hospital emergency room.

From search & rescue missions, car accident victims (I'm one) and even lost & injured hikers, Rescue Helicopters are available 24hour, 7 days a week, on call, ready at a moments notice, often putting their own lives at risk.

From personal experience, I would not be alive today if it was not for the Careflight Helicopter.

Laying on the road with 4 breaks to my pelvis, broken collar bone, dislocated shoulder, broken nose and massive internal injury's (pelvis cut major artery's to my legs) after a bike accident, it was the Careflight helicopter that picked me up and transported me to specialist doctors, flying me to Liverpool hospital (2 operations), then to Westmead (another operation) then back to Liverpool for the final operation (I died but they brought me back)... all up, I died twice and spent 4 months in hospital with another year learning to walk again..

Moving on..

NSW has currently 3 Rescue Helicopter teams, those being Careflight, Westpac Rescue and Toll Rescue (NSW Ambulance)

Most Rescue Helicopters today have multi-agency radios onboard including Police, Marine, Airband, Ambulance & Hospitals at a touch of a button.

Listening to Rescue Helicopters gives you an idea about what these amazing services have to deal with, they include things like adverse weather conditions, patients on the verge of death and even LED laser lights blinding them as they are about to land.

If you have a digital radio scanner receiver that can receive PSN (Public Safety Network) in NSW, this would be a excellent place to start.
You can often hear Helicopters talking to hospitals detailing what is going on, so that the hospital is ready and waiting for the incoming patent.

UPDATES TO MASTERFILE (card), ARE THEY AVAILABLE?

Hello and Welcome Back... Thought we would do a post on Masterfile (card) updates, whats involved and how much does it cost..(For Uniden 436, 536, SDS100, SDS200 (USDS100 / USDS200)

So, each week at NSW Radio & Communications, we do a scout around across various websites = ACMA, Facebook, NSW PSN, Radio Chat Forums, ect, ect looking for changes to radio frequencies.

Just lately, NSW PSN has gone thru various changes to TGIDs, most recently to NSW Fire & Rescue. Sometimes these changes can be minor and other times can be signifigant taking us the best part of 6-8 hours to rewrite a new TGID list while deleting the old one.

Other times, an update might be someting we have thought of, or a customer has suggested, or has asked for it.

Express PSN is one of those things.

Express PSN is a bank with every Control Ch listed and active. Great if you travel alot knowing no matter where you are in NSW, as long as you have an antenna setup that has gain (most UHF CB Antennas have 4-8db gain), you can almost be guaranteed* that you will pick something up

Other PSN banks have been born because customers have requested 'Ambulance Only' or 'Rural Fire Only' because they work or have an interest in that one thing, once again, we have thought 'how do we make this happen'? and thru hours and hours of testing, have come up with a solution adding it to the masterfile

The current Masterfile is at V8

So, whats changed or have we just 'moved banks around' to make it look good?

Bank 1 = The normal 'Site Programmed' NSW PSN & Express PSN in one, with the new Fire & Rescue TGIDs ready to go. Full government users (about 35 users) are active.

Bank 2 = Is a narrowed down version of Bank 1 with only Emergency users (Rural Fire, Fire & Rescue, SES & NSW Ambulance) programmed in.

Bank 3 = Will be NSW Rural Fire (Analogue & PMR) with new VHF only bank, Updates to Mid North Coast & NPWS

Bank 4 = Sees updates to Surf Rescue (updated every summer) Mid North Coast and new bank 'Surf Life Saving Australia' used at pools and waterways

Bank 5 = Is local comms with UHF CB moved to a new bank (Bank 6).. great for traveling and NSW Marine moved to Bank 8 (for marine lovers, boaties).. Updates to Mid North Coast & Media (updates Gravity Media)

Bank 6 & 7 = Now UHF CB only & AM CB Radio

Bank 8 = NSW Marine only (Bank 8 includes Marine Rescue as well)

Bank 9 = Military with updates to Williamtown RAAF (streamlining 3 lots of frequencies into 1)

Bank 10 = Sydney Airport

Bank 11 = Western Sydney Airport.. (will add more frequencies when they become available)

Bank 12 = Local Airports, Updates to Mid North Coast, Mudgee airports

Bank 13 = Airline Companys, updated to include all NSW wide aircraft users not just Sydney Airport as previous masterfile versions

Bank 14 = Orion Connect Plus DMR Network.. Updated locations. I do believe that Connect Plus is sited to shut down with users headed to Capmax Network (Bank 14)

Bank 15 = Orion Capmax Trunked Network.. Updated around every 3-6 months

Bank 16 = Amateur Radio (NSW Wide)

Bank 17 = Motor Racing, these banks will be blended into one bank as V8 Supercar Frequencies can no longer be listened to (Digital Encryption).. Bank 17 will be Motor Racing and will include Gravity Media (non trunked), pit crews, flag marshalls, track crew and other racing teams.. May change racing bank to 16 while i nut out Gravity Media. Racing banks will include Bathurst, Eastern Creek & Newcastle

Bank 18 = FM Radio (good for testing antenna setup)

HOW MUCH

Updates for exsisting customers = Card Version $35 (includes new card posted to you), Email Version = $25 (Be sure you put UPDATE on payment page please)

Why is not Free?

The Masterfile is free to those customers who have had a card done recently, meaning a few weeks ago, not years down the track. It takes time to do something properly and thats what we do.

When we do a update, everything gets re-done (re-programed) from scratch, which takes around 4-6 hours, not just added bits here and there, that way any old frequencies are not mixed with new frequencies / TGIDs. which can cause overlapping in the scanner and making the scanner run erratic..

If your going to do a job, do it properly, after all, its the Masterfile we use here at NSW Radio & Communications, so we know it works and is up to date, selling you the same file we use and love for simplicity and useability..

V8 SUPERCARS - NO LONGER SCANABLE

Hello and Welcome Back... Confirmation from listener 'Sean' that V8 Supercars radio frequencies are no longer able to be listened on a radio scanner thanks to encryption.

They used to be NXDN (Kenwood)

Not sure on other racing like Bathurst 12 hour, they may be still ok..

Media (Gravity Media) and pit crews still seem to be ok.

Its just the car frequencies that are encrypted..
