Well folks here we are, we have finally seen Electronic Dance Music emerge as one of the dominate genres of music today. With the new found success we have also seen some nasty afterbirth appear. A great blog post written by another old timer like myself Sean Ray (you can find it HERE) explains well why some are saying that with new popularity EDM may be on the decline. I suggest that you all read that blog post and leave a comment here or there because the conversation needs to be had.

Outside of all of the hysteria today’s Song of the Day reassures me that there are artists who are going to buck the trend of “selling out” by going the other way and taking more risks with new sounds. London duo Simian Mobile Disco exemplified this with their recently released third album “Unpatterns”. The lead single off the album “I Waited For You” is airy vocals and pulsing bass lines. If you read this blog regularly (highly recommended) you’ll know we are Calvin Harris fans here. With that being stated It’s hard not to cheer on his new found success with his recent chart-topping tracks with Rihanna, and Kelis. In honor of Mr. Harris newly found superstardom we’ll save the debate over whether or not his lastest single featuring Ne-Yo is the culmination of years of hard work or a money grab for another post… Today we celebrate all the pop crunchy catchy-ness of “Let’s Go”. Song of the Day: Martin Solveig “The Night Out” (Madeon Remix)

There is a raging war going in some corners of the EDM (Electronic Dance Music) world between those for and against the recent pop music invasion of the genre. There are some old timers (I say affectionately) who feel as though too many of the more established names are all too ready to lend their names and sound to pop icons who may or may not care about the Dance Music scene or culture. There are a couple of names the really draw a lot of fire and ironically they are both French. David Guetta and Martin Solveig (to a lessor degree) are being held up as the posters boys for being EDM’s most flagrant sell-outs. While I am not sure that’s an entirely fair accusation it is true that the two Frenchmen have produced probably some of the most pop-like catchy tunes on the radio these days. Today’s Song of the Day is the perfect example of that. “The Night Out” is earworm inducing with it’s catchy hook and pop swagger. This remix by Madeon just turns up the fun meter by a magnitude of 10 and who doesn’t like a bit of fun?

Song of the Day: M.I.A. “Bad Girls”

How do you describe the genre bending sound of British rapper, singer-songwriter, record producer M.I.A.? Stoner hip hop? Psychedelic beat? Perhaps in the generic sense simply electronica. However you try to categorize it M.I.A. has captured the sound of now and while that may seem a bit familiar to some (remember De La Soul?) this is definitely a new formulation. I can already hear an adventurous DJ or two dropping “Bad Girls” into their set, hell the song is dance floor ready so expect to be sweating to this one on your next girl’s night out. “Bad Girls” is the first official single from M.I.A.’s fourth studio album set to be released this summer. Well some of you might be wondering why it’s taken so long for Atlanta’s Treasure Fingers to find his way into this blog. While there is no excuse, we hope that today’s Song of the Day will help make up for our glaring omission. The track “Au Revue” is from the recently released “Crusaders EP”, which is a collaboration with No Brainer Records head Malente and is a two song disco / house tour de force. Now by highlighting “Au Revue” we’re not trying to say that the title track (and mildly amusing Official Video linked below ) “Crusaders” is filler, oh no. M83 (aka French musician Anthony Gonzalez) have been around since 2001 and have definitely earned some performance cred. They’ve opened for many acts in the US and UK including Kings of Leon, The Killers, and Depeche Mode. With the arrival of their latest album “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” I can say without hesitation this is finally M83′s time to shine. “Midnight City” the first single from “Hurry Up..” was quietly released this summer and the reaction has been building over the last few months mostly due to some amazing remixes of “Midnight City” being released recently. My favorites are the booming Man Without Country remix and the sublime Trentemøller remix.
