So, here is the first in a series of four new podcasts coming over the next couple of weeks, starting with stuff that I was listening to in May and June of this year. This episode's tracklist is as follows # TITLE / ARTIST 01 Sleepy Sun - Martyr's Mantra 02 Richard Hawley - Leave your body behind you 03 We are Animal - 1919 04 Pontiak - Lions of Least 05 Pond - Moth Wings 06 League - How Do I Know? 07 Dr. Dog - Warrior Man 08 Amadou & Miriam ft. Santogold - Dougou Badia 09 Firehorse - She's a river 10 The once - Your My Best Friend 11 The Lumineers - Ho Hey 12 Alex Winston - The Fold 13 Pet Clinic - Stop Wasting My Precious Time 14 Delta Spirit - Tellin' The Mind 15 Yukon Blonde - Stairway 16 We Are The Physics - Goran Ivanisevic 17 Jonathan Boulet - You're An Animal You can either subscribe to the podcast using the links at the top of the page, through the iTunes podcast directory or download it direct from here. (Right Click, Save As) As is usual, if there is anything on this podcast you like, please remember to support the artist(s) by buying a track or two, or even go and see them live and visit their merch stall. If you are an artist that has a track on this podcast that you would like removed, please get in touch with me and it shall be done without prejudice. Until the next time.... Thanks for listening. It's good to listen. Rob xxx</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>rock,indie,electronic,pop,music,free</itunes:keywords>

May 2012. The wettest drought in history.

I think it was Jimmy Carr that said "If this drought carries on, we'll run out of umbrellas."
Kind of sums it up really!

Normally, at this time of year, I'm starting to look forward to those long Summer days (and nights!), but looking out of the window right now at a grey and damp London, Summer seems a long way off. I'm starting to get on Anna's nerves with my constant weather bitching and I long for Carol on the BBC Breakfast news to give me a good forecast, but alas, her recent predictions have only been good for the ducks and the farmers.

Apparently, there's a break from the rain this weekend, which will be nice as we have a wedding to go to and I do hope that the sun shines on the happy couple as they have had a tumultuous year and thoroughly deserve a dry day.

So that's me, a typical Brit, constantly on about the weather. An Australian mate once told me "At least you get weather", while that's true, I must admit that I do prefer theirs.

If you see the sun, do tell it to pop out over here for a bit.
Please.

So, with that in mind, if I haven't drowned, I'll catch you in a couple of months.

Looking out of the window today, there is a beautiful blue sky, it's warm and it's as if that weather we were holding out on for the last couple of months is back. For a couple of days at least.

Aaanyway, been a bit of a hectic couple of months since the last one as getting ready for our impending parenthood is the number one priority. We seem to be ready - we've got all the kit, the nursery is decorated, birth plan is completed and we've finished our ante natal classes, so all we need now is a Little Person in our lives to share it and we'll be laughing. No movement at the moment though, so it's down to good old patience.

So, PJ Harvey won the Mercury prize then. I was a bit disappointed with the nominations - same story every year really - as I was expecting the see Skying by The Horrors and/or One Thousand Pictures by Pete & The Pirates which are easily the two albums by British artists that were eligible I like best. Ho hum, there's no accounting for taste, is there?

If Scroobius Pip's Distraction Pieces isn't in the list next year, then I know for definite that something's wrong somewhere. It's a great album, backed up by a phenomenal live show that I got to witness at a tiny gig last month. It's also the first album since the Pete & The Pirates one that I had genuine pre release flutters, just like the old days, while counting down the days to release. When it dropped on the proverbial (mouse) mat and I got to hear it, I was wowed good & proper. Definitely my album of the year so far.

And while a lot of the world has recently commiserated each other over the split of R. E. M., I'm a little bit heartbroken at the demise - for the second time, I may add - of The Middle East. Some of you might remember their track 'Blood' from a previous episode and in memory or their passing, I've slipped one of their more recent tracks into this one. Shame really, but while one Australian band leaves, another enters. Watch out for Nantes. I predict big things.
For the last couple of months, I've been helping out some old friends at Planet Angel by coordinating the music for the *Chilled* In A Field festival that was held last weekend in a field in Sussex. It's been great to get back on the horse as it were and despite some typical British summer weather - rain, wind, thunder - we pulled it off with a great lineup of DJs and live acts. As a result of that, I've managed to get hold of a load of new music from people I previously hadn't had the pleasure of listening to, so expect to hear some of that in the near future.

Look out for the festival next year, it really is a nice, family friendly couple of days in a field with great food, excellent choice of ales & ciders, several music, performance and workshop areas and an incredibly happy vibe.

In a previous missive, I bemoaned the fact that because of some strange twist of fate - read inter EU beauacracy - I couldn't get hold of the Scarlet Chives album, but Brian from the band got in touch and as a result, I am now the happy owner of a copy. You can download yours from the Sureleaf Records website. Go on, take a punt. If you like the music on the podcasts - The Horror featured earlier in the year - I guarantee this is one of the best albums of the year so far and could well be one of those hidden treasures that you see in end of year lists. Cheers Brian, you are a true gent and I wish the band and the label much success in the future. If only other labels had the same positive attitude to customer service and satisfaction, the music world would be in a much friendlier state.
So, what have I got for you to listen to this time? I wish them all the best as I would any other young couple setting out on a life together. If I was their wedding DJ, they wouldn't be getting too many genre classics like "The Birdie Song", "Come On Eileen" or the ubiquitous "Stars on 45" medleys. Instead, they'd probably get a set something like this month's podcast, music that's been filling my ears for the last couple of months.

After a quite barren - as is usual - January and February, March and April have kicked up a whole load of good stuff as well as some that have less than impressed me.I was rather disappointed; after the return to form that was "In Rainbows"; with the new Radiohead album, but have been extremely impressed with albums by Erland & The Carnival, Shilpa Ray & Her Happy Hookers, The Kills and Younger Brother. I've just got hold of an album by Colourmusic which will no doubt feature in the next episode. It's brilliantly bonkers and puts a big old smile on my face. Really looking forward to the new Pete & The Pirates album coming out next month. Could be a contender for album of the year? The first couple of singles off it have shown promise, see what you think. And there's a new Fleet Foxes record out soon, and what I've heard of that sees a continuation of the brilliance of the first one.

So, I'm off to find some more. I like long bank holiday weekends, me.
Finally, I'd like to dedicated this one to Anna and LP, my better half and our baby due at the end of September.
Hope you are all well and the winter has been kind. Spring is officially (I think) here; at least the daffodils and snowdrops in our garden seem to think so. This is A. Good. Thing!

Been having a few technical problems of late, but I've finally managed to get it all working again. Thought it was going to cost me an arm and a leg, but ended up with me only losing some marbles and a bunch of time. Thank dog for that.

It's been a good year so far and some great music is coming out from all across the world. I can heartily recommend the new albums by Elbow, James Vincent McMorrow, The Boxer Rebellion, Agesandages, Tom Williams & The Boat, The Joy Formidable and Chapel Club.

I've been having some battles though. I really can't understand why some albums are only released in certain countries. Take the James Vincent McMorrow album as an example. This amazing record was released in Ireland last year, but only available legally in the UK on Monday of this week. That's a whole year. A whole year where I haven't been able to pay the artist the respect he deserves. I've now got the same problem with an album by a Danish band called The Scarlet Chives. Brilliant music, but I am not allowed to buy it unless I pay nearly £30.00 for a CD (that I don't want as I am trying to be media free) and shipping.

I thought that membership of the EU meant free trade between the participating countries. Or are record companies exempt from those trade rules? Would you wait a whole year for your new TV or toaster to be delivered? No. You'd go and buy one from somewhere else! C'mon record companies, this is the 21st century FFS. If you really; and I mean really want people to stop stealing your product, at least give them the opportunity to buy it and not make them wait and wait and wait.

It seems that things never change and I will continue to love the music but hate the industry until my dying day.

As Ben Elton many moons ago would say, "A little bit of politics for you there". Rant over :)

So, a new year and a new podcast, hopefully the first of 6 bi-monthly ones for 2011 and beyond. You can either subscribe using the links at the top of the page, through the iTunes podcast directory or download it direct from here. (Right Click, Save As)
Brilliant music, but I am not allowed to buy it unless I pay nearly £30.00 for a CD (that I don't want as I am trying to be media free) and shipping. Rant over :) So, a new year and a new podcast, hopefully the first of 6 bi-monthly ones for 2011 and beyond. You can either subscribe using the links at the top of the page, through the iTunes podcast directory or download it direct from here. Time to move on and time to look back. Once again, this year has thrown up some amazing music, some of it covered by magazines, radio and TV here in the UK, some of it not. A lot of it has come through my general oracle and undisputed greatest radio station in the known universe, BBC 6Music. Earlier on this year, we thought we were going to lose it, but due to an amazing public response and some good decision making by those that are in charge, 6Music was saved from the chopping block and it continues to grow and grow. I would like to thank all at 6Music for a great year, but especially Marc Riley, Gideon Coe, Tom Ravenscroft, Huey Morgan, Jarvis Cocker, Tom Robinson and Cerys Matthews who continue to inspire me week after week. Long may it continue.

The last month to 6 weeks or so have been taken up breaking this one down from the 95 tracks that have appeared previously, so I haven't really had the chance to listen to much new stuff. I'm looking forward to starting again in the New Year. I've got a whole month to catch up on. January is normally a quiet month, so I should get some respite.

It's been quite an international lineup with the UK, USA, Canada, Malaysia, Japan, Sweden, France, Finland, Holland and Australia covered this year. Australia has 4 tracks in this Best of compilation, so there's obviously a lot going on down there at the moment. Hopefully there's more to come in 2011.
(Right Click, Save As) I've also made a bonus podcast that's made up of tracks that were hanging round the playlist but for whatever reason, didn't make it into any of the previous episodes. I'll have that one ready early next week along with a list of my favourite 20 albums of the year. As usual, your comments and track recommendations are always welcome, so please keep them coming, I really do listen to everything I'm sent a link to. Finally, if there is anything on this podcast you like, please remember to support the artist(s) by buying a track or two or even go and see them live. If you are an artist that has a track on this podcast that you would like removed, please get in touch with me and it shall be done without prejudice. Until the next time, have a happy and peaceful New Year. Thanks for listening. It's good to listen. In fact, I now know that there are actually going to be six as I have another playlist ready that contains tracks that for whatever reason - time or they just didn't fit in with the other podcasts - didn't make it onto previous episodes; and a final one that will be what I consider to be the best 25 tracks of the year. I should have these done in between Christmas and New Year.

This time round, I've also managed to learn something about chaptering up he podcasts so that you can skip tracks if you don't like what you are hearing. You should also get an image of the track that's playing as well. Hope it works. Thanks to Wicksy for the pointers :)I know it works OK on iPod, iPhone and iTunes, but I'd be interested to know if it doesn't work for your particular player. I've also changed the encoding from mp3 to mp4, so hope this doesn't cause a problem for you. If mp4 doesn't work for you, let me know and I'll bung up an mp3 version.

Next year, my plan is to do at least 6 hour long podcasts, with voiceover, eventually turning it into an hour long, monthly podcast by 2012.
That's the dream, anyway :)

This time last year, I had a playlist of about 15-20 tracks, some of which were a bit meh, but a couple were absolutely brilliant. This year, great tunes are much more evident, so it was a more difficult job breaking down almost 50 to a much more manageable 25 for your aural pleasure. There have also been a raft of great albums released so far this year and I'll try and get round to compiling that list by the end of the month. They say that recession leads to great art and this year certainly seems to be fruitful so far.

So, the podcast can be downloaded from here (Right Click, save as) or use the subscribe buttons at the top of the page and the tracklist is as follows. All of these tracks can either be bought at all the usual suspects (7Digital is my own particular favourite) or they are free downloads from artists websites. I have linked to the artist's website or Myspace so you can find out a bit more about them.

I hope you enjoy listening as much as I have enjoyed compiling the list and your comments are always welcome.
--------Time--------- Title - Artist---------------------------------------------- 0:00.00 - 0:03.31 / Devils Spoke - Laura Marling 0:03.31 - 0:08.20 / Get Better - Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip 0:08.20 - 0:10.56 / Have Pity - IV Thieves 0:10.56 - 0:15.01 / Lucille - The Vasco Era 0:15.01 - 0:18.20 / Marching Off To War - Morning Bell 0:18.20 - 0:24.07 / Inside A Boy (Shark mix) - My Brightest Diamond 0:24.07 - 0:29.08 / Apples & Allergies - The Rest 0:29.08 - 0:31.21 / The Horse In Motion - Ha Ha Tonka 0:31.21 - 0:34.52 / Your Hands (Together) - The New Pornographers 0:34.52 - 0:37.15 / Hands & Knees - Dag For Dag 0:37.15 - 0:40.19 / I Just Love You More - Kate Nash 0:40.16 - 0:44.16 / Light It Up - Blood Red Shoes 0:44.16 - 0:47.40 / Gold Canary - Cloud Control 0:47.40 - 0:52.05 / From A Tower - LoveLikeFire 0:52.05 - 0:57.35 / Aya - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club 0:57.35 - 1:01.30 / Fossils - Peggy Sue 1:01.30 - 1:04.52 / Salvation - Scanners 1:04.52 - 1:09.15 / Wide Eyes - Local Natives 1:09.15 - 1:12.30 / It Kills - The Brownies 1:12.30 - 1:19.08 / Grey Is Old - Furcast 1:19.08 - 1:22.53 / Poison Lips - Vitalic 1:22.53 - 1:25.59 / High On A Wire - The Black Box Revelation 1:25.59 - 1:30.49 / Magnetic Warrior - Archie Bronson Outfit 1:30.49 - 1:34.06 / Fire Power - These New Puritans 1:34.06 - 1:37.10 / Say Goodbye To What - Bullion Until the next time, thanks for listening. It's a folk opera akin to the The Decemberists stuff, is bloody excellent and features Ani Di Franco, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Ben Knox Miller (The Low Anthem) among others. Here's a link to some of the tracks. Go buy now.

There's a band being hyped to hell and back at the moment called The Drums. I was unfortunate enough last night to give them a good listen. IMO, somebody has either got a rich daddy in the record industry and/or they've managed to completely bluff the indie press. Or I'm getting old and don't get music anymore. Cool hair and clothes though.

In other news, the next podcast should be done in the next week or two. I've just got to trim the playlist down to a more manageable hour and a half - currently it clocks in at 2 hours and 50 minutes! - and it'll be there.

I'm also going to give the blog a rebrand over the next couple of weeks and it will come back as schizophonica.co.uk. Schizophonica is a word that doesn't really exist, but fits my musical spectrum perfectly. Hopefully, if/when I can get it working properly, I'll be listing all the music that I listen to. Mostly to promote it, but also so I can remind myself of what I actually put in my ears every day.

There's also the unsavoury business of the BBC Structural Review and the impending closure of the BBC 6Music station. This would be a travesty of culture and a slight on the memory of John Peel. If you feel strongly about this or would like to learn more about this review, click here.

Until the next time, thanks for listening.
It's good to listen.
I made a promise to myself in January of 2009 to actually do something this year and have finally got around to it, some 51.5 weeks after the promise was made.

Still, better late than never, eh?

Anyway, what this blog sets out to achieve is to let the ether know what my head sounds like at various points in my life. You may even find something you like and if you think you like something that I'd like, let me know. I really will listen to anything. Some things I'll like, some things I won't. Some things I'll comment on, some things I won't, but thanks for the pointer anyway.

I'm in the middle of creating three podcasts of my favourite tracks of the last year, and I'll upload and point you at them when they are ready. Hopefully they'll all be done between Christmas and the New Year.

My aim is to produce three or four podcasts a year highlighting what I like at that point in time. Don't know when it will happen - hell, this bit took 42 years - but I will definitely post lists of things I like in between/instead of podcasts.

Thanks for listening. It's good to listen.
