House Bill Reverses Decades of Progress on Bike/Ped

Take Action!

It s so much worse than we thought. Today, the House releases its transportation bill, the American Energy and Infrastructure Act. You are receiving this action item because your Member is on the transportation committee. Please click on the “Take Action!” link to contact them.

When we contacted you last week, we knew the bill would be bad news for biking and walking. But we didn’t think it would go so far as to completely cut every reference to bicycling and walking out of the federal transportation policy.

House leadership is pressing to eliminate bicycling and walking in the Transportation bill:

• Destroys Transportation Enhancements by making the program optional
• Repeals the Safe Routes to School program, reversing years of progress in creating safe ways for kids to walk and ride bicycles to school
• Allows states to build bridges without safe access for pedestrians and bicycles
• Eliminates bicycle and pedestrian coordinators in state DOTs
• Eliminates language that insures that rumble strips “do not adversely affect the safety or mobility of bicyclists, pedestrians or the disabled”

But we can still save biking and walking in this bill. This week in the Transportation Committee, Representative Petri (R-WI) will stand up for bicycling and walking by offering an amendment that restores dedicated funding for Transportation Enhancements and Safe Routes to School. Mr. Petri can only be successful if everyone with a stake in safe sidewalks, crosswalks, and bikeways contacts their Representative on the Transportation Committee again today to urge them to vote YES on the Petri amendment!

This is as urgent as it gets. Even if we do win this amendment, there will be a long road ahead. But if we lose here, we risk losing decades of progress.

Oklahoma River Trail Devon Boathouse – 616 SE 6th Street

A chilly morning did not deter our group on Saturday. You know, after a couple of miles the exposed skin gets numb and stops hurting. It does make it a little tricky to drink at the water stops or enjoy a snack afterwards. I didn’t get a head count this week but it looked like our normal crowd of over 400 runners. Next, we are headed down to the Devon Boathouse for 12 miles on the Oklahoma River Trail. We will gather inside the boathouse for announcements and then head out on the trail.

Driving Directions – The best way to get to the Devon Boathouse used to be to take Lincoln Blvd. south from Reno, just behind Bass Pro Shop. The best way to get there now is still to take Lincoln Blvd. south from Reno, but Lincoln Blvd. has been moved. Lincoln Blvd. south from Reno is now further east on Reno than it used to be. From the traffic light at Reno and Lincoln Blvd North, right behind Bass Pro Shop, go east about 200 yards to the next traffic light at which you can only turn south on Lincoln Blvd. Turn south there, go over the big bridge and wind down to the Devon Boathouse on the SE corner of Lincoln Blvd. and SE 6th. It sounds a lot harder than it is. Leave home early and give yourself plenty of time.

Water Stops – We will have water stops approximately every three miles.

Walking Program – There will not be a separate organized walk from Nichols Hills Plaza. Each week the walkers will meet wherever the runners are meeting.

Treats to Share – It has been a longstanding tradition for people to bring treats to share with the other runners after our runs. You are welcome to do so each week. Just put anything you would like to share on the table before or after the run. Many thanks go out to Jenny Savold for the chocolate milk, Mary Hammer for the cupcakes, and to whoever brought the pumpkin bread. I sure hope to see more of those this weekend. Caloric replacement is a critical element in marathon training.

A2A Bus trip- See attachment. We’re taking another bus trip this year to the A2A Race. Space is limited so don’t wait to sign up. This is a great trip and lots of fun.

Marathon Pacers – The pacers for this year’s marathon are being organized and sponsored by the Red Coyote. Anyone who is interested in being a pacer during the race should contact Burke or John Beck at the store, 840-0033. The pacers will be attending many of our runs to get to know their pace groups.
