Scholarship Description: The MHRD is a unique Master degree program in which students undertake a foundational semester of study at the University of Sydney, and then a second semester at one of the four partner universities:

* Gadjah Mada University (Indonesia)
* Mahidol University (Thailand)
* Katmandu School of Law (Nepal)
* University of Colombo (Sri Lanka)

Graduates of the course will gain an interdisciplinary understanding of human rights and democratisation in the Asia Pacific, and will have opportunities to research and examine the application of human rights and democratisation in the field with the partner institutions.

In the first semester at the University of Sydney, students will undertake a foundational course in social science, legal and political approaches to human rights and democratisation. During the second semester students will follow two core units of study complemented by either supervised research, an internship at an in-country organisation specialising in human rights/democratisation or undertake further specialised electives. Students must select one of the four partners universities listed above to undertake their second semester study.

Master Scholarships

34 scholarships, covering course fees and a living and travel allowance, will be offered to outstanding applicants from across the Asia Pacific region. This is made possible with the support of a significant grant from the European Commission.

Scholarships will be available to citizens of Asia Pacific countries. The award of scholarships will be determined by academic qualifications and potential contribution to human rights and democratisation.

ADB Scholarship (Asian Development Bank) - Japan Scholarship Program was established with financing from the Government of Japan to provide an opportunity for well qualified citizens of the Bank’s Developing Member Countries (DMCs) to undertake postgraduate studies which will assist the economic and social development of their countries at University of Sydney Australia.
Each scholarship covers full tuition fees, an allowance for books and instructional materials, a monthly living allowance, medical insurance and travel expenses. For scholars engaged in research, a special grant may be applied to assist in field work and thesis preparation. In special circumstances, computer literacy, preparatory language and other similar courses may be covered under the scholarship.

Selection criteria for ADB - Japan Scholarship:
- Applicants with less than two years of work experience will not be selected.
- Preference to women candidates.
- Preference to applicants with lesser financial capacity.
- The Program will, in principle, not support applicants who have previously studied abroad.
- The Program will, in principle, not support applicants who are pursuing a second master’s degree or a second doctorate degree.
- Candidates who are applying in a participating academic institution in their own country may not be selected.
- Diversification of nationality in the overall Program as well as at each participating academic institution will be considered.

The scholarship period is one year. An appropriate extension for the second or third year of study is conditional on the scholar’s maintaining a satisfactory level of performance determined by the University of Sydney and following approval by the ADB. Competition for an ADB-JSP scholarship is extremely strong. Only candidates who receive an unconditional offer of admission will be considered for the ADB-JSP scholarship.

This Call for scholarships and grants shall be open from April 22 through August 31, 2009, and online registration of candidatures shall be done from July 15 to August 15, 2009, with the exception of the following Programs: “Genaro Estrada” Program for Specialists on Mexico; High-Level Lecture Program; Special Internship Program; Studies on Mexican Independence and the Mexican Revolution; Program of Visits for News Media Collaborators; the Mexican Program to Improve the Quality of Mexico’s Higher Education Institutions; and the “Daniel Cosío Villegas” Programs of El Colegio de México. A 3-year PhD scholarship is available in Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering.

The work takes place in close collaboration with the Department of International Health, Immunology and Microbiology, Panum, University of Copenhagen.

Quorum Sensing is an inter-cell communication system by which bacterial cells keep track of the population density and adjust their behaviour accordingly. The attack phenotype is characterized by the production of an overwhelming cocktail of tissue damaging virulence factors. Bacterial cells expressing virulence factors are attacking cells, whereas their non-producing counterparts are harmless. Since many of the virulence factors are easily recognized by the host, keeping expression at a low level until a sufficient number of bacteria have amassed to successfully overcome the immune system is a stealthy attack strategy. The coordinated gene expression makes it hard for the human immune system to launch efficient countermeasures to the attack.

The PhD student will enter a program where strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa with deactivated production of signal molecules and GFP (detectable fluorescence) tagged attack genes are studied. This gives us access to the sub-processes in the gene expression regulatory loop. In fact, we are able to observe the activation of the attack gene at the cellular level. In the QS laboratory, Panum, the quorum sensing process can be monitored using fluorescence microscopy where the individual bacteria as well as the host cells can be observed at the single cell level. Furthermore, it is possible to monitor the concentration of signal molecules. A detailed experimental mapping of the quorum sensing feed-back loop in P. aeruginosa and a mathematical modeling of the sub-processes is the target of the PhD project.

The modelling and data analysis takes place in the Cellular Signal Processing Group at BioMedical Engineering, DTU Elektro. The experiments are carried out in Michael Givskovs group at Panum, University of Copenhagen.

Candidates should hold a master’s degree in engineering, biophysics or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a master’s degree.

The requirement for improved efficiency and reduced environmental impact is continually driving civil aero-engine designers to consider both novel propulsion systems as well as airframe architectures. The success of these proposals relies on a clear understanding of the complex aerodynamics associated with the integration of the propulsion and airframe systems. Funded PhD studentships are available for aerodynamic research in the areas of propeller aerodynamics, intake design, vortical flows and aircraft aerodynamics. The research will be conducted using experimental, computational and analytical methods and will utilise the Cranfield University Large-Scale Low-Speed Wind Tunnel as well as sophisticated Particle Image Velocimetry methods. The research will offer the opportunity to work with industry in this field and will enable individuals to be well prepared for a rewarding career after successful completion of the PhD.

Entry requirements Applicants for the post should have EU residence status and must have a first-class or upper second-class degree in engineering or a related area. Fully funded studentships are only available to applicants with UK residence status. An aerospace background would be a distinct advantage as would practical experience of experimental and computational aerodynamics.

The opportunity

Students from developing Asian nations are offered the chance to
pursue their master’s or doctoral studies in fields relating to
sustainable development at one of Asia ’s leading postgraduate
institutions.

The scholarships

The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Asian Institute of
Technology have partnered to offer a program called “Education for
Sustainable Development” from 2006 to 2009. Master’s and doctoral
scholarships will be provided to students from countries in South and
Southeast Asia – Afghanistan , Bangladesh , East Timor, Nepal,
Pakistan , Sri Lanka and Vietnam – the Mekong region low-income
countries of Lao PDR and Cambodia , as well as other less developed
countries in Asia .

He scholarships cover degree programs in fields relevant to
sustainable environment, human rights and gender, and poverty
alleviation. The core idea of the scholarships is to support Norwegian
program countries in Asia with emphasis on sustainable development for
enhancing institutional capacity building.

Details

• Scholarship recipients will be selected according to AIT’s
admission criteria, rules and regulations to ensure that the most
suitable candidates are admitted based on an assessment of the needs
of the nominating agencies in the Norwegian program countries.

• At least half of the scholarships will be offered to women candidates.

• Priority will be given to candidates nominated by project partners
in the Norwegian MFA-AIT program countries.

• After successful completion of graduate studies and professional
training in AIT, the scholarship recipients are obliged to return to
their home countries for strengthening institutional capacities and
contributing in building sustainable societies.

• Recipients are required to conduct thesis research on topics
relevant to their respective home country’s development needs
incorporating gender, environment and sustainable development concerns.

• Scholarships provide grants for conducting thesis research.

• Both traditional and flexible master’s programs are available. The
flexible master’s program enables students to pursue their studies
while carrying out professional duties in their home countries.
Preference will be given to staff of public sector agencies,
government departments, training institutions and universities.

• Doctoral scholarships are available only to candidates from
teaching and research institutions including national universities on
the broad theme of sustainable development as a part of the
institutional capacity-building process in the program countries.
Applicants must provide a relevant research proposal and nomination
from their employer as well as demonstrate a strong academic
background and experience.

Focus areas

Applicants may apply to any field of study at AIT, but the program of
study must be designed to focus on issues related to poverty
alleviation, energy and sustainable environment, natural resources
management, human rights and gender.

The 3-year Ph.D. programme in Comparative Analysis of Institutions,
Economics and Law (IEL), promoted by the founding members of CLEI, was
activated in 2004/2005 (XX ciclo di dottorato), with the aim of
fostering research in Comparative Law and Economics. IEL is a Doctoral
School of Law Degree programme at the Università di Torino and is
intended for students with interests in Comparative Analysis of Law and
Economics, Economics of Law, Economics of Institutions.

The programme
has a strong international connotation and promotes scholarly exchanges
between Universities. Each year IEL offers a number of posts with a
3-year scholarship, which normally corresponds to half of the total
posts available.

CIDA-AIT PARTNERSHIP 2003-2008

Applications are invited for post-doctoral research fellowships under
the Southeast Asia Urban Environmental Management Applications
(SEA-UEMA) project.

This is a partnership project between the Canadian International
Development Agency (CIDA) and the Asian Institute of Technology. Its
goal is to contribute to the improvements of urban environmental
conditions in Southeast Asia. It seeks to attain improved
implementation and sharing of sound urban environmental management
policies and practices. The focus of the project is on three key urban
environmental sub-sectors, water and sanitation, solid waste and air
pollution, with gender equality and poverty reduction as the two
crosscutting themes.

Fellowship Details

The post-doctoral fellowships are one year funded positions for
applied research on UEM practices and policies. Fellows will be
required to produce a publication at the conclusion of research
activities.

Selected candidates will receive:

A fellowship of 50,000 Baht per month towards living costs
* Research fund of up to 150,000 Baht on cost-reimbursable basis

Round trip economy travel expenses
*
Office space,equipments,access to internet and academic
facilities in AIT
* Opportunity to be involved in teaching master students and be a
member in their thesis committee

Selection Criteria

Candidates should be graduates with a doctoral degree. Research
and work experience in UEM or a related field is required. The
research proposed under the fellowship should focus on practices and
policies related to any of the three sub-sectors: water and
sanitation, solid waste and air pollution
*
The applicant must be from Canadian ODA eligible Southeast Asian
countries (Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Philippines, Timor-Leste,
Thailand and Vietnam)
*
Research in collaboration with other organizations will be
encouraged
*
Good and effective interpersonal, written and oral communication
skills are required

Job description

Towards better nutritional support for chemotherapy-induced intestinal
damage in children with cancer.
The long term cancer-free survival of pediatric cancer patients has
significantly increased during the past decades due to more intensive
chemotherapy treatment regimens. However, more intensive treatment has also
resulted in serious morbidity and even mortality. One of the side-effects is
mucosal damage (i.e. mucositis) in the gastro-intestinal tract, thereby
loosing the epithelium necessary for the normal functions of the GI-tract,
like the barrier function for bacteria and digestion and absorption of food.
In this research proposal we will study the digestion and absorption of
carbohydrates, fatty acids and amino acids using a mouse model of
chemotherapy induced gastro-intestinal mucositis using nutrients labelled
with stable-isotope tracers. Using the mouse model, further knowledge will
be gained about the pathofysiology of mucositis and new prophylactic
interventions can be studied.

The results of the studies will be used by dietitians to develop optimal
feeding protocols for pediatric oncology patients with two objectives: 1 –
to supply the GI epithelium with as much nutrients as possible, thereby
promoting recovery. 2- to feed the patients most efficiently, resulting in
the best available feeding status of the patient, related to decreased
infections, more rapid recovery and, most importantly, increased survival.

The data will be published in scientific journals. After 4 years a thesis
must be written and a PhD degree should be obtained.

- Good social and communicative skills.

The UMCG has a preventive Hepatitis B policy. This may mean that you must
build up enough resistance to Hepatitis B before you can be appointed.

Collective Bargaining Agreement of the University Medical Centers.
