It is important that your financial advisor understands the current federal and state regulations that govern financial aid issues. While the financial aid officers are not true financial advisors in the broader definition, it is these professionals’ duty to guide you in taking the correct path.

Whatever you are able to save, do not save it in the college-bound child’s name.

This is one of the most common and costly errors parents can make when saving for their college-bound child. Universities will generally consider about one-third of a student’s assets to be available for paying college expenses each year.  The exact same amount saved in the parents’ accounts will be “taxed” at about one-fifth of the college-bound child’s rate. A significant savings for both the parent and the college-bound child.

Don’t wait until the last minute! By incrementally saving for your college-bound child’s education early, the payoff will be considerable when you’re college-bound child actually goes off to college. But equally important is the redeployment of your family assets. The Academic Alumni Scholarship is awarded on academic merit. It was established to recognise excellent academic achievement and to encourage and assist academically able students to progress to postgraduate study. The scholarship provides recipients a 20 per cent reduction in course tuition fees for every year of academic study.

This scholarship is available to all students who are working towards completing or have acheived their first degree at Middlesex University with First Class Honours, including from study at a partner college. Applicants must go on to enrol upon a course of Postgraduate study within three years of graduating.

Modelling the effect of the chemical matrix-CNT interactions on the composite electrical properties

Background information

Marie Curie Initial Training Networks (ITNs) are joint research and training projects funded by the European Commission. Funding is provided for researchers from both inside and outside Europe to carry out individual project work in a European country other than their own.

The “CONTACT” ITN is made up of 10 partners (coordinated by the Fraunhofer ICT in Germany), and will recruit a total of 15 postgraduates and 3 post docs for project work lasting for 1-3 years. The aim of the project is the tailored industrial supply-chain development of CNT-filled polymer composites with improved mechanical and electrical properties. Project work in the network will include the optimisation of CNT synthesis and functionalisation, dispersion in thermoplastics and thermosets, the processing of CNT compounds, modelling, characterisation and application.

Subproject description:

This subproject will be carried out by one early-stage researcher at I3N over a period of 28 months.

The aim of this project is two-fold:

- to use molecular dynamics/quantum mechanics to calculate the effect of doping, functionalization and covalent bonding with various polymers affects the electrical properties of individual CNTs;

- to develop mesoscopic models which incorporate this atomic-level information and to use these models to investigate how the electrical response of composite materials depends on CNT dispersion.

This project will be carried out in parallel with other research projects in the same programme, e.g. “CNT functionalization” and “CNT modification”, providing the necessary atomic-scale information to interpret experimental results and to define the most promising

experiments to be performed.

This project will involve the following steps:

1. Validating the quantum mechanics/molecular dynamics code to be used to investigate the atomic and molecular scale properties of CNTs. To do so we will investigate the electrical properties of defect-free CNTs of different length, chirality and radius and will compare our results with existing experimental and theoretical results.

2. Determining how structural defects, doping, functionalization and covalent bonding with semiconducting or insulating polymers affects the electrical properties (charge distribution, electron affinity, ionization energy, electrical conductivity) of individual

CNTs.

3. Writing a computer code to develop a mesoscopic model of polymer-CNT composite that incorporates the spatial distribution of CNTs and the relevant atomic-level information obtained in the previous steps and systematic investigation of how the electrical properties of the composite are affected by CNT dispersion, concentration, orientation and type of matrix polymer.

The main objective is creating an educational programme that provides the required knowledge for a professional fire safety engineer in a Performance Based Design environment. Besides interuniversity cooperation, student mobility in Europe is one of the main points of interest of the overall programme. The mobility structure, with possible change in study location after each semester, gives the students the opportunity to gain from the strengths and expertise of each of the three universities.

The classes in the first semester, covering basic topics in Fire Safety Engineering (FSE), can be attended in Ghent or Edinburgh. In the third semester, classes are again taught in Ghent (for general FSE) or Edinburgh (with focus on structural engineering in the context of FSE). The fourth semester is devoted to the Master’s thesis, hosted by one or more of the three institutes.

Non-European students are to be considered as “full scholarships” covering all necessary costs of the student during his/her study period in Europe. Over 2 years, the total amount of the scholarship is € 48,000. This amount of € 48,000 includes a fixed contribution of €8,000 to travel and installation, a contribution to the EMMC participation costs of € 8,000 per year (covering the annual tuition fees), and monthly installments of € 1,000 per month.

European students is considered as a “financial contribution”. Over 2 years, the total amount of the scholarship is € 20,000. The minimum graduate admission requirements are:

Unchanged from the previous draft, this version still eliminates all 12 clarifying “safe harbors” to a 1992 law banning “incentive compensation” for admissions and aid officers that were added to it in 2002. It does, however,leave room for new clarifications, as yet unreleased, from a caucus led by Terry W. Hartle, senior vice president for government and public affairs at the American Council on Education, who represents college presidents on the rule-making panel. The rules include a detailed definition of a credit hour for the purposes of awarding Title IV aid, just as the department’s inspector general investigates how accreditors assign credit hours to nontraditional courses. The department also introduced revisions to its rules on “misrepresentation” of information that take aim at institutions that are perceived as misleading potential students and others on their employment opportunities after completing a certificate or degree.

But perhaps the most significant proposal is the department’s regulatory language linking debt and income for all programs and institutions that are eligible for Title IV funds because they “prepare students for gainful employment in a recognized occupation.” The department opted to embrace that approach rather than propose regulatory language that would have tied tuition costs at such programs to the expected earnings of recent graduates. Though both were discussed during December’s second round of rule making and criticized by some panelists as “price controls,” the debt approach seems to be less objectionable heading into next week’s deliberations. The result of implementing a debt-to-income limit could be to weed out (or at least cut tuition at) vocational programs and institutions that don’t yield their recent graduates in-field jobs that pay well enough for them to repay their student loan debt on a 10-year schedule.

Under the proposal, the average debt repayment for a program’s graduates could be no more than 8 percent of the expected earnings of someone working in the occupation for which the program prepared students. The ratio would be calculated by dividing the median debt load of a program’s last three years of graduates by Bureau of Labor Statistics data’s 25th percentile of annual earnings for people in occupations for which the program prepared students.

Programs that exceed the 8 percent level could still be eligible for Title IV funds in one of three ways: by proving that its graduates’ annual earnings were higher than the BLS’s and keep the debt-income ratio below 8 percent; by showing that students have at least a 75 percent repayment rate; or by demonstrating a program completion rate of at least 70 percent and an in-field employment rate of at least 70 percent.
