The University of Trento, is now inviting applications for its three-year doctoral programme in International Studies. The programme focuses on the study of International Law, International Economics and International Politics. It will be composed of at least 200 hours of structured coursework; a period of study outside Italy, and a dissertation, written under the supervision of faculty members and an external reader. All coursework will be in English and will be taught by members of the university’s multi-national faculty. Starting with the academic year 2008-2009 significant changes will be introduced to the programme of studies. Admission Requirements
Applications will be accepted from candidates, regardless of gender, age and nationality, who have graduated with excellent marks from a masters course, a four year Italian laurea, or an equivalent programme in one of the disciplines comprising international studies (economics, history, law, political science, political philosophy, sociology). Candidates from other disciplinary backgrounds may also apply, provided that their research project clearly falls within the field of international studies.

Students who intend to carry out research in the following areas are particulalrly encouraged to apply: European and International Politics; European, Comparative and International Law; Open Economy Macroeconomics, International Trade and International Financial History. One scholarship will be reserved for applicants with a research project in the area of trans-national crime. An additional scholarship is reserved for candidates with a research project in the area of politics of European and regional integration.

Language Requirements
The programme is conducted entirely in English and an excellent working knowledge of that language, including a proven writing ability, is an indispensable requirement for admission. Foreign students are required to obtain a working knowledge of the Italian language.

Applications
Applications must include :

* a curriculum vitae in English;
* a research proposal (max 5 pages/2500 words) in English, in one of the areas studied in the International Studies programme. Selection Procedure
The admissions process consists of two separate stages. In the first stage, the admission committee produces a short-list of candidates based on the evaluation of the application materials. In the second stage, thirty-minute interviews will be conducted with the short-listed candidates. Candidates who do not reside in Italy may avail themselves of the possibility to conduct the interview by telephone. After the conclusion of the interviews the admission committee will publish the final ranking. The interview stage will normally take place in early May and successful candidates will be notified in short order.

Scholarships
The programme offers a limited number of full scholarships renewable for three years subject to satisfactory academic appraisal. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit, meaning that they will be offered to the top candidates of the final ranking. One scholarship will be reserved for applicants with a research project in the area of Trans-national Crime. An additional scholarship is reserved for candidates with a research project in the area of the Politics of European and Regional Integration.

Tuition Fees
The PhD programme currently does not charge tuition fees. Admitted students however are required to pay an annual student tax to the amount of roughly €120,00.

Residence Requirement
Studying for a PhD programme is a full-time commitment and we expect all our students to take up residence in the area. Students re required to be resident in Trento for 24 months during the 3-year programme. A limited number of subsidised apartments will be made available to foreign students. An orientation day will be held in September 2008 and coursework will start towards the end of that month.

The University of Birmingham’s MSc in Mathematical Finance teaches technically trained graduates - including in Mathematics, Science and Engineering - to apply their quantitative skills to financial analysis. Successful completion of the MSc will qualify students to work in quantitative analysis in City of London

Recent advances in theoretical finance and computing power have moved quantitative analysis from the margins of the financial world to its core. Rigorous quantitative analysis is now involved in everything from the design and pricing of individual assets to the optimisation of whole portfolios. Birmingham’s MSc in Mathematical Finance gives highly motivated, high performing students an opportunity to work in this area. It is taught by two top ranked institutions - its School of Mathematics and its Department of Economics. Students take core courses in financial econometrics, mathematical finance and computational methods. Optional modules allow them to hone further their technical skills (e.g. further mathematical finance) or to broaden their economic understanding (e.g. macroeconomics).

The MSc accepts students on the basis of quality rather than quantity. In 2007-08, only one in six applicants were offered places. Thanks to a generous private gift from Andrew Fisher (Birmingham economics 1982; CEO Towry Law), six Fisher Scholarships covering full tuition fees are available. Applicants with first class degrees are automatically considered for Fisher Scholarships as well as internal scholarships offered by the Economics Department, covering from a quarter to full tuition fees. In both cases, scholarships are awarded to the most able applicants, regardless of nationality. Home, EU and overseas students all pay the same fees. This fee structure ensures that the most qualified applicants are accepted, regardless of nationality.

PhD Research Studentship Interacting Turbulent Flames Using DNS And Laser Diagnostics Department of Engineering

A Research Studentship position is available on an EPSRC funded research project in the study of interacting turbulent flames using DNS and laser diagnostics. This project involves collaboration with Rolls-Royce Plc. and Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd. in the UK.

The main aim of the project is to develop close understanding of interacting turbulent premixed flames using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) methodology and laser diagnostics. The interacting flames are one of the fundamental root cause for “noisy” combustion, but this is still a terra incognita for modelling. The research student will be involved in the experimental part of the project but there will be constant interaction between the experimental and computational parts.

The Ph.D student will work closely with one of investigators and will be using state of the art multi-scalar imaging and particle image velocimetry (PIV) facilities available in the Engineering Department.

The successful candidate will have a first class degree in Mechanical/Aerospace/Chemical engineering. Applications from overseas students will also be considered. Funding, covering all fees and maintenance will be available for the three years. The studentship will commence from 1st October 2008.

The Ruhr Graduate School in Economics (RGS Econ) is a three-year PhD program initiated and founded by three universities of Germany’s Ruhr Area - the University of Bochum, the University of Dortmund and the University of Duisburg-Essen - as well as by RWI Essen, one of Germany’s leading economic research institutes. The research environment at the RWI Essen allows the students to participate actively in policy consulting and to establish contact with policy decision makers.

About the Program:
The program provides postgraduate education in all relevant fields of modern economics, covering formal theoretical and empirical econometric analyses in labor and population economics, industrial economics, microeconomics, macro-economics, and public economics.

SCHOLARSHIPS:

1. Financial Assistance
The Department of Financial Economics has available a number of PhD stipends starting in September 2008. The stipends are for a four year period and offer NOK315,000 per annum (approx. US$55,000) and also cover tuition fees. Each stipend contains a 35 hour per year teaching duty which usually consists of teaching assistant work. 2. Program Structure
The PhD in Finance is taught entirely in English and is structured such that the first year of study covers course work and exams (60 ECTS credits). Research Grant To pursue PhD studies in the CLIP group (http://clip.dia.fi.upm.es), Technical University of Madrid (Spain), in the context of the S-Cube EU Network of Excellence.

The CLIP group at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) invites applications for a fully-funded 4-year PhD scholarship for qualified graduate students.

Candidates should have graduated (with a Bachelor level or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related fields prior to the start of their research work at UPM. Candidates close to fulfilling this requirement can also apply, and every case will be considered separately. Please include as much relevant information as possible.

The PhD work will focus on the research areas of the Clip group and the EU-funded S-Cube network, and will be directed by Manuel Carro and Manuel Hermenegildo. The general research objective of “S-Cube: Software and Services Systems Network” is to advance in the consolidation of a unified framework for Software and Services by studying how to reliably integrate the different requirements for a service-based application (SBA), including establishing ground work to define how tools to ensure SBAs can be safely implemented. Among other topics, this includes ensuring quality of service, and performing validation and verification of SBA or parts thereof –tasks in which UPM is directly involved.

This is also an outstanding opportunity to get involved in tasks which require international collaboration, as the 15 S-Cube partners come from 11 different countries. Besides purely research issues, a significant part of S-Cube deals with integrating existing European research in the field by, e.g., organizing workshops, striving to establish a researcher exchange network, and others. The CLIP group itself has currently around 20 full-time members from 6 different countries. The working language of the group (and of the project) is English, and good to excellent command of English is expected from applicants.

Experience in / knowledge of (or, at least, interest in) the following topics, despite not being mandatory, increases the chances of success:

* Software verification.
* Software validation.
* (Constraint) Logic Programming.
* Technology for and deployment of Web Services.
* Quality of service in software services.
* Service-oriented architectures.

The project starts on March 1, 2008, and will initially run for four years. The grant will be given in the form of a full-time contract which includes academic fees, medical care, and a tax-free monthly payment which can range from 1,100 to 1,600 euros, depending on experience. A successful applicant will be an excellent student capable of conducting research under supervision by one of ITU’s faculty members and at the highest international level.

The PhD scholarships run for a period of three or four years depending on the educational level of the student. Students with the equivalence of 4 years of university studies - where one year (60 ECTS) is transferable to one of the Master of IT programmes at ITU - can be awarded a four year scholarship.

Title: Statistical and computational methods for gene mapping

Description:
The project will focus on statistical and computational methods for locating disease susceptibility genes. This will be based mainly on genome wide association approaches with a particular emphasis on an approach known as DNA pooling. The DNA pooling approach greatly decreases the cost of genome wide association approaches but brings with it a new set of computational and statistical challenges. There will also be scope in the project for work on more general approaches utilising genomewide data, including work on gene expression and related bioinformatics. The project will address a wide range of disease phenotypes and as such can be readily tailored to accommodate the specific interests of the student.

The student will be based in the genetic epidemiology department ( http://genepi.qimr.edu.au/ ) at QIMR, Brisbane. QIMR is one of the largest medical research institutes in the southern hemisphere. The genetic epidemiology department is the single largest grouping at QIMR and employs several internationally renowned researchers in the field.

The studentship is part of the EU project ‘DIPLECS’ which seeks to design a Cognitive Architecture that can learn how to drive a car by watching a human. The system will be demonstrated in two domains: providing driver feedback in a real car as part of an assisted safety system and in the autonomous control of model RC devices.

The studentship will investigate visual learning in the domain of weak supervision. Such weak supervision could take the form of object categorisation learnt from images gathered from the internet or using linguistics in the form of commentary to build concepts of objects and actions. The focus will be upon the generic techniques to perform learning from noisy unlabelled data.

Candidates should hold a 1st or 2i honours degree or Masters degree or equivalent in a scientific discipline (e.g., Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or Computing), and should have good written/spoken English and demonstrate an aptitude for the research area. A postgraduate student is sought who will undertake research on an EPSRC-funded project with industrial support from Ford and Cambustion. The research will focus on understanding the combustion process in automotive diesel engines operating under the demanding constraints of high charge dilution transient operation.

The project will involve primarily experimental research, using a new high-speed single-cylinder research engine combined with rapid emissions measurement and optical diagnostics equipment. The researcher will gain advanced skills and knowledge widely applicable in thermo-fluids research in both industry and academia. The project will involve collaboration with other researchers at Loughborough and with staff at Ford and Cambustion.

The project will be supervised by Dr. Gordon McTaggart-Cowan, Lecturer in Thermofluids, and Professor Colin Garner, Perkins/Royal Academy of Engineering Professor of Applied Thermodynamics.

Loughborough has an extensive track record in engine research, with particular experience in optical assessment of charge motion and combustion processes. Technical support for the project is available from experienced technicians and research associates. The internal combustion engine powertrain laboratory comprises eight engine test cells equipped with extensive emissions measurement capabilities and a wide range of optical, single, and multi-cylinder engines. Scholarships for the Graduate Program in Economics and Finance CEMFI, Madrid (Spain)

The basic graduate offering at CEMFI consists of its Master in Economics and Finance and its PhD program in Economics. Unlike many Master programs in the US and elsewhere, ours is self-contained and offers a well respected qualification.

CEMFI grants a subset of its Master students exemptions from the tuition fee and/or scholarships for living expenses amounting up to EUR 10,000 per year. They are granted according to academic merit. Also, the Fundación Carolina, in cooperation with the Fundación BBVA, has endowed four scholarships for Latin American students of the Master. These scholarships amount to 1,200 euros per month for housing and subsistence, over 19 months, plus 2 additional months for students who participate in a Summer internship program. They also cover the Master’s tuition, travel expenses and medical insurance.

An important distinguishing feature of our Master is that it lasts for two years, the second being essential for shaping the skills of our
graduates, as follows. First year: Basic graduate course work and some optional subjects. Second year: Specialized courses and research training through a Master thesis. Our ratio of students to faculty is between four and five. Thus we can devote a lot of attention to each student. This is particularly important for the Master thesis, where the faculty provides guidance to a unique degree.

Members of CEMFI’s faculty publish in top journals and are research leaders in their fields. They also edit prestigious journals and are key players at leading learned societies such as the European Economic Association and the Econometric Society.

Job description
Project 1: The aim of this PhD position is to help unravel the genetic basis of agriculturally/evolutionary important traits using
association- and linkage mapping approaches. The prospective student will be involved in the analysis of data from a large, densely
genotyped natural collection of the flowering plant Arabidopsis thaliana and a novel multi-family panel of recombinant inbred lines.
The nature and magnitude of these data will provide an unprecedented high-resolution picture of the genetic variation underlying complex phenotypes and will make it possible to systematically integrate information from natural as well as experimental populations. The task is to build an analytical/computational framework to facilitate such an integrative analysis. As an extension, different types of –omics data will be collected from these populations, which will then be used to reconstruct the molecular networks that link genetic variation to phenotypic variation.

Project 2: DNA methylation is an epigenetic mechanism that leads to changes in gene expression which can be inherited through mitosis, and even through meiosis in some instances. The impact of differential methylation on the variability in complex quantitative traits at the population level is an area of research that is vastly under-explored. The aim of this novel project is to map methylation loci that influence complex phenotypes using tiling array technology. The student will be involved in the computer implementation of statistical methods and is also expected to make creative contributions to the conceptual development of this project.

Requirements
You are a university graduate at MSc level in one of the following disciplines: bioinformatics, statistics, computer science, mathematics, theoretical biology, quantitative genetics, physics, or mathematics. You are expected to have an excellent academic record (supply a list of examination marks from your university study) and be curious, creative and ambitious. You should be able to write scientific articles and reports (to be proven by your graduation thesis or another comparable report) and be fluent in the English language.

Community Resilience To Extreme Weather Events Through Improved Local Decision Making
Research Centre for the Built and Human Environment / School of the Built Environment

Applications are invited for a PhD research studentship at the Research Institute of the Built and Human Environment, School of the Built Environment University of Salford.

This project offers an exciting opportunity to work in the 6* RAE rated research institute of the Built and Human Environment. The 3 year doctoral studentship (funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council - EPRSC) will provide a maintenance grant and cover all approved tuition fees.

The research will focus on the coping strategies of small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) in responding to extreme weather events. This will involve literature reviews, surveys, case studies and contributing to action research studies with SMEs to understand the characteristics of SME coping strategies, their adaptive capacities, resilience, barriers in implementing various coping measures etc., The PhD research student will be working in close collaboration with research fellows, research assistants and other PhD students from various universities. The 3-year research project has several interim and final deliverables, with critical milestone activities to be achieved in the interim. The three-year project will commence in February 2008.

Eligibility & How to Apply:

We invite applications from potential UK, EU and International students who have a 2.1 or above Bachelors Degree in any Built Environment discipline. The prospective student should have the ability to work independently as well as a member of a team and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Further, the research will involve frequent travel between Manchester and London (case study site) and the candidate should be willing to undertake frequent extensive travel to attend project meetings and for data collection (all travel costs will be reimbursed). It is desirable that the candidate have:
