Denmark : PhD scholarships in Finance

General information:

A PhD scholarship runs for a period of 3 years, and includes teaching obligations equivalent of ½ year’s work (840 work hours). The scholarships are fully salaried positions, according to the national Danish collective agreement. The scholarship includes the tuition fees, office space, travel grants plus a salary, currently starting with DKK 24.080 (app.3.229 EUR) monthly up to DKK 29.341 (app. 3935 EUR) depending on seniority, plus a pension contribution totalling 17,1 % of 85 per cent of the base salary.

Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).

The application (see link below) must include a project description of up to 5 pages. This research proposal should contain a presentation of an original research question, a description of the theoretical framework and related literature.

In addition to the research proposal, the application must include the completed application form, copies of a Master’s degree certificate or other certificates of a corresponding level, brief curriculum vitae (CV), a list of papers and publications, and one copy of a selected written work (e.g. Master’s thesis). Indonesia : PhD scholarship on REDD+

The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), Bogor, Indonesia and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) School of Economics and Business jointly offers a 3.5 year PhD scholarship on the topic of REDD+ (reference emission levels, drivers and incentive mechanisms).

CIFOR advances human wellbeing, environmental conservation and equity by conducting research to inform policies and practices that affect forests in developing countries. CIFOR is a CGIAR Research Center. Our headquarters are in Bogor, Indonesia, and we have offices in Asia, Africa and South America.

UMB is recognized as a leading international centre of knowledge, focused on higher education and research within environment and biosciences. A broad range of study programs are offered at the Bachelor, Master and PhD levels to a total of some 4200 students. The School of Economics and Business has about 55 staff members and 600 students, of whom 30 are PhD students. The position

The position is for 3.5 years. The PhD degree at UMB requires course work of 60 credits (ECTS, equivalent of one year's study) and the successful defense of the PhD thesis. Time will be spent at UMB (Norway), CIFOR HQ (Bogor, Indonesia) and in the country of choice for fieldwork, with the exact allocation of time to be agreed upon. The expected uptake date is August 2013.

A scholarship of USD 2,200 per month will be provided by CIFOR. Additional funds for travel and fieldwork are available. The scholarship grantee will be covered by the Norwegian Public Health and Social Security System while in Norway during study periods longer than 6 months.

Thematic focus

The PhD scholar will be part of the research project "Global Comparative Study on REDD+" (GCS), led by CIFOR, and module 3 on MRV systems and reference levels. A major research question is how to set reference (emission) levels, including how drivers of deforestation and forest degradation can be integrated in a quantitative way, and - by extension - how to design and implement REDD+ incentive systems at different scales (national, regional, local). The PhD scholar is expected to work on a sub-topic within this overall question and in one or more of the six main countries of GCS (Indonesia, Vietnam, Tanzania, Cameroon, Brazil, Peru). A full research proposal is to be developed during the first six months of the scholarship.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a master's degree in economics or related field. Skills and experience in statistical analysis and in remote sensing are considered an asset. The assessment criteria will also include analytical abilities and grades, team-working skills, relevant experience, motivation and other factors that will increase the probability of a successful completion of the PhD.

The research project: Increased Use of Wood in Urban Areas â€“ WOOD/BE/BETTER
The PhD-position will be a part of this interdisciplinary project that will span four years starting in 2013. The project is a part of the BIONAER program established by the Research Council of Norway. The main collaborating institutions are:

The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO),
The Dept. of Mathematical Sciences And Technology (IMT) at the Norwegian University for Life Sciences (UMB)

The Norwegian Forests and Landscape Institute (NFLI).

One PhD position will be based at AHO in the centre of Oslo, two others will be based at UMB about 40 km south of Oslo.
The PhD at AHO: Themes and tasks
Wood in urban building typologies is a central theme both in the research project and in the PhD. The study should clarify architectural potential in wood-based construction systems and building envelope solutions. The WOOD/BE/BETTER project will put focus on project types that represent large building volumes in NorwayÂ´s urban development. Housing is expected to play an important role. Other functions and building categories are also relevant. Architectural adaptability to varying sites and programs must be sought for.
Supervision of the PhD at AHO will be provided by the AHO faculty. The AHO PhD work in architecture will be coordinated with the two others at UMB, whose research areas will be structure systems and building envelopes. This will be an important part of the interdisciplinary collaboration between the institutions. In addition, a selection of leading architectural firms is associated with the project. Their feedback and interaction will be important.
The integration of research and teaching is a primary focus of the WOOD/BE/BETTER project. Interdisciplinary coordinated master courses at AHO will interact with the research. Contact with the students and teams of teachers and researchers will be an integral part of the PhD work.
Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate holding a Master of Architecture. Experience from detailed architectural design of a high quality will be given high priority. Familiarity with environmental issues related to the building sector is important. Good oral and written skills in English are required.
Personal qualities and skills
Architectural creativity, analytical skills, a strong motivation and good collaborative abilities are important for a successful PhD study. The candidate should be able to work independently under varying conditions.

ICourts is now recruiting a PhD student with a political science training within the area of international courts and legitimacy. We are particularly looking for exciting projects which can provide new empirical and theoretical insights into the causes and consequences of international adjudication on the national/societal level. One way of studying the legitimacy of international courts could thus be to try to find out whether the case law that comes out of the courts is in fact used as a source and reference point by national courts and governments. But also whether and to what degree litigants like ordinary citizens and private organizations/ cooperations actively use and refer to cases coming from the international level. The legitimacy of international courts can also be studied from other points of departure of course. It is however important to stress that research at iCourts is problem-driven and focused on salient empirical and theoretical issues with the goal of proving path-breaking basic scientific knowledge of the impact of international courts on politics and society. Successful applicants will work full-time on SIERA Project, and will be selected to conduct PhD research in one of the project’s related research fields. Selected students will conduct their PhD at Sina Institute, and being officially registered in prestige EU Universities (one of SIERA Project Partners). That is, PhD students will be co-supervised by both EU and Palestinian scientists, and their research topics will be the same or very close to their project duties. Students are expected to spend about 3 months a year with their EU co-supervisors and the rest of their time at Sina Institute.

About SIERA Project:

The project’s aim is to reinforce closer and sustainable scientific cooperation between Palestinian and EU scientists in the field of multilingual and multicultural knowledge sharing technologies. The diversity of languages, cultures, and standards are the main barriers to sharing and consuming knowledge. All project activates are focused around establishing new research in this field. Two EU multilingual knowledge sharing portals have been selected as a concrete test-bed for the targeted research. The first, MICHAEL, is a cultural heritage portal which provides a multilingual service to explore digital collections from museums, archives, libraries and other cultural institutions from across Europe. The second, KYOTO, is a wiki-portal about environment and ecology. The key idea is to use both portals to investigate how to enable large-scale knowledge sharing portals with Arabic language and content. In doing this, a digitalized repository of Palestinian Cultural Heritage and another repository in the environment domain will be provided and added to the knowledge sharing portals.

Sweden : PhD-student position in Population Genetics

We are seeking a PhD student in population genetics to be active in the research project ”Insect life cycle genomics and adaptation in the wild”, with financial support from the Knut & Alice Wallenberg Foundation and the Swedish Research Council. The large-scale project is a collaboration between researchers with expertise in population genetics, ecology, ethology, morphology, immunology and molecular genetics with the aim to attack central biological questions regarding how genes interact to produce a whole organism with a life cycle that is adapted to local conditions. The central idea of the project is to take on these difficult questions by means of an integrative, cross-disciplinary approach, with a close interaction between research on two insect systems: the green-veined white butterfly Pieris napi and the fruit fly Drosophila. The ecology of the butterfly has been intensively studies by us and others, and the research collaboration also includes expertise on Drosophila as a model system. This gives us the opportunity to genetically compare butterflies known to be adapted to different ecological situations, and when we find genes that are candidates for being involved in such adaptation we can study their effects in the Drosophila system.
We will initially target three phenotypes: diapause, wing pattern and immunity. We will make use of platforms at e.g. SciLifeLab,www.scilifelab.se, for next generation sequencing, RNA-Seq and other high-throughput services. The advertised position focuses primarily on the butterfly P. napi. Our research group has published extensively on the ecology and evolution of this and related species, and we are in the process of generating a high quality P. napi genome. The PhD position may include all steps from field- and laboratory experiments to analysis of genomic data and gene expression (RNA-Seq).

Qualification and competence
To be qualified for research studies in population genetics the applicant must have completed a research degree (e.g. Master’s), or have passed at least 120 hp (2 years) of biological studies, including an approved independent project of at least 30 hp at advanced level (“examensarbete”) within population genetics or a related subject. Applicants, who have in principle acquired the corresponding competence in Sweden, or abroad, are also qualified.

Criteria for selection
Among qualified applicants, selection is made according to the ability to profit from the studies. The criteria to be used are properly documented competence within the described research area, capabilities with regards to speaking and writing in English (and Swedish, when relevant), analytical thinking, creativity, initiative, independence, and team work performance. The applicant’s earlier experience within the field of research can be of relevance especially when further documented by university courses, independent research works, personal references, interview and an application indicating the applicant’s motivations in written form. While bioinformatics and programming experience is not required, evidence of such experience, or interest in obtaining such experience, is sought.

Job details

(3) Academic Background: Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree or equivalent from a recognized/accredited university or college, and have achieved shown excellent academic performance.

(4) Work Experience: At least 3 years of work experience in public administration (preferably 5 years or more).

(5) English Proficiency: A minimum TOEFL-iBT score of 79 (TOEFL-CBT score of 213, TOEFL-PBT score of 550) , IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.

(6) Health: Applicants must be in good health.

(7) Visa Requirement: Selected Applicants must obtain a “College Student” visa prior to their arrival in Japan.

Applicants who are already in Japan under a different visa category are required to change it to “College Student” by the end of the month preceding the start of the scholarship. Applicants who change their resident status to anything other than “College Student” following their arrival in Japan will immediately lose their status as a Japanese government scholarship student.

(8) Applicants who meet any or all of the conditions below are not eligible. If identified as such after commencement of the scholarship period, applicants will be required to withdraw from the scholarship:
